Five practical tactics introverts can use to be more successful in business while staying true to their natural temperament3. How to handle challenging workplace scenarios like meetings dominated by loud voices and networking events that drain your energy4. Practical techniques for saying no to energy-draining commitments6. Strategies for managers to better support and leverage introverted team members7. I identify as a builder. I love building things. I've never been fantastic at getting attention for either my personal brand or for my businesses without having to pay for that attention through Facebook ads or more traditional media."— Will Nelson [00:02:37 → 00:02:58]The Evolution of Personal Branding: "It might take longer to build a personal brand, but it's something that you can come back to. It's an asset that will keep paying you dividends long term versus having to constantly rent."— Will Nelson [00:05:33 → 00:05:44]Content Creation Process: "So I was talking to Dave Gerhardt the other day from exit five, and he has a notion page that he just jots down ideas into on a daily basis and then circles back to those to see if he can create any piece of content from. So whenever an idea pops into his head, he's putting it down somewhere."— Will Nelson [00:07:13 → 00:07:30]Social Media Strategy for Creators and Businesses: "I think in general, though, on social, you should have the mindset of just giving away as much as you can for free, and then very infrequently asking for something in return. So just like going to the ATM, you need to first put money in the bank account to take money out. For business owners, I typically recommend ten to 20% for top of the funnel content, 60% to 70% for middle of the funnel content and then ten to 20 for bottom of funnel content."— Will Nelson [00:10:12 → 00:10:45]Content Strategy Insights: "So I have a full time analyst that will go to YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and start to mine the top performing content in a given month to get a sense of what hooks are performing, what style of content's performing, what types of edits."— Will Nelson [00:13:55 → 00:14:13]Understanding ROI in Content Marketing: "It probably takes, realistically, three plus, maybe six plus months to start to see an ROI. And so you're losing money or you're investing money into something without seeing a return for a little while, and that can sting."— Will Nelson [00:16:20 → 00:16:35]Content Creation Efficiency: "So take the inputs that you're giving your voice notes or whatever app you're using to log those insights and then chop that up into written content or video content if you're recording that, and then actually post it to the various social channels that you want to get on."— Will Nelson [00:21:49 → 00:22:19]Content Marketing Persistence: "A lot of the big accounts that are on X or LinkedIn have been at it for quite some time, so it's a lot of just stick tuitiveness."— Will Nelson [00:23:40 → 00:24:37]Creative Inspiration for New Podcasters: "I'm just stealing or getting inspiration from content that I know has performed well in the past or has been thought of by an expert podcaster."— Will Nelson [00:27:18 → 00:27:29]Creativity and Flow State: "And so I think you have to allocate enough time to get into that flow state, and you have to make it a practice, whether it's daily or weekly."— Will Nelson [00:33:28 → 00:33:38]Shownotes powered by Castmagic--Have any questions about the show or topics you'd like us to explore further?Shoot us a DM; we'd love to hear from you.Want the weekly TL;DR of tips delivered to your mailbox?Check out our newsletter here Follow us for content, clips, giveaways, & updates!Castmagic InstagramCastmagic TwitterCastmagic LinkedIn ---Blaine Bolus - Co-Founder of CastmagicRamon Berrios - Co-Founder of CastmagicWill Nelson - Founder and CEO of 64stories

My capstone project will consist of a deep-dive into the research around the benefits of creativity in order to write a robust literature review. Beyond the academic paper, I am creating a book proposal for my next non-fiction book about everyday creativity. "Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World" by Adam Grant - Explores the characteristics and behaviors of original thinkers and provides insights on how to champion new ideas and drive meaningful change. "Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative" by Austin Kleon - Offers unconventional advice and inspiration for embracing creativity, encouraging readers to borrow from other artists and find their unique creative voice. "Creative Confidence: Unleashing the Creative Potential Within Us All" by Tom Kelley and David Kelley - Written by the founders of IDEO, this book explores how to unlock and nurture creativity in individuals and organizations. "The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles" by Steven Pressfield - Examines the challenges and resistance faced by creative individuals and provides strategies for overcoming obstacles and unlocking creative potential. "Art & Fear: Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking" by David Bayles and Ted Orland - Explores the psychological and emotional aspects of the creative process and addresses common fears and obstacles faced by artists. "Imagine: How Creativity Works" by Jonah Lehrer - Investigates the science and psychology behind creativity, offering insights into the creative process and strategies for cultivating creative thinking. "The Creative Habit: Learn It and Use It for Life" by Twyla Tharp - Provides practical advice and exercises for developing creative habits, enhancing productivity, and fostering long-term creativity. Bonus. "Create Anyway: The Joy of Pursuing Creativity in the Margins of Motherhood" by Ashlee Gadd is part pep talk, part permission slip. Coming from California to Colorado, I can finally feel winter like a real season. Something about this cold season is calling me into hibernation. I am feeling very pulled to turn inward and reflect on myself right now. I've always been super open about the importance of doing what feels right for you, and for me what feels right is to pause. Not stop. Not end. Just pause. If I were to keep going at this time, I would be pushing myself against the direction my heart is calling. I don't want to push. I want to be pulled and I want to listen. So for now I am taking this time to explore some things I am excited about personally, have some adventures, and just slow down as I settle into life in Colorado after living away from my family for 11 years. So what's next? Have you ever been “in the zone”, the highly focused mental state conducive to optimal creativity and productivity? In positive psychology, this is known as the Flow state, the mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process. Coined by Hungarian American Psychologist and author Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (you'll have to listen to know how it's pronounced!) flow is, at its core, about achieving happiness, joy, purpose, and optimal performance. A lot of people say that the purpose of life is to be happy. I'm not so sure. I challenge this thinking in this episode arguing that maybe the purpose OF life is to find purpose IN life. This episode explores how that flow state is note bestowed, rather, it can be developed. This week's episode focuses on how we can learn to achieve flow in our lives. The key aspect to flow is control: in the flow-like state, we exercise control over the contents of our consciousness rather than allowing ourselves to be passively determined by external forces. “The best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times… The best moments usually occur if a person's body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (1990). It's not necessary to wait for lightning (or your flow state) to strike. If we understand the benefits and outcomes of flow and reinforce the habits and circumstances that can cultivate flow, we can continue to cultivate joy and accomplish worthwhile things. On today's wise walk, we are slowing down and considering ways to nurture our creative genius, imagination, and ideas. We also invite you to consider participating in the 100-Day Project to let your creative imagination and ideas flow.  As we stride together, the questions on our mind are: What creative talent do you want to exercise? Is there something new you are interested in? Will you carve out time to let your creative gifts soar? Remember, your brain incorporates creativity in almost everything you do. Michael Bierut, an acclaimed graphic designer, and author created the 100-Day Project  in 2007 as a workshop for the graduate graphic design students at the Yale School of Art. www.kaiehnes.com Ep17 So that's Creativity...Who Knew Hello and Welcome to the Way of the Emotional Warrior Podcast. My name is Kai Ehnes and today we will be answering the question of What actually is Creativity? What is creativity? Imagine the following: At a certain point there is pretty much nothing but then out of the blue there is an onslaught of ideas. According to Richard Foster, lecturer in management at Yale, that moment is creative insight. But what he found more important are the traits, the knowledge and ways of thinking that lead up to this moment. He says creativity is about making something new, rather than merely applying or discovering something new. Creative solutions are insightful, they're novel, they're simple, they're elegant, and they're generative. A key to being creative, says Foster, is the ability to find associations between different fields of knowledge. This process requires people with curiosity, energy, and the openness to see connections where others cannot.   Next comes some answers to what creativity is, by Robert Franken in his book Human Motivation. Creativity is the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or possibilities. Tests of creativity measure not only the number of alternatives that people can generate but the uniqueness of those alternatives. the ability to generate alternatives or to see things uniquely does not occur by change; it is linked to other, more fundamental qualities of thinking, such as flexibility, tolerance of ambiguity or unpredictability, and the enjoyment of things unknown. One of my personal favorites, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, in his work: Creativity - Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention. He describes creative people in the following ways: 1. Persons who express unusual thoughts, who are interesting and stimulating - in short, people who appear to be unusually bright. 2. People who experience the world in novel and original ways. These are (personally creative) individuals whose perceptions are fresh, whose judgements are insightful, who may make important discoveries that only they know about. 3. Individuals who have changed our culture in some important way.   He continues with Characteristics of the creative personality: 1. Creative individuals have a great deal of energy, but they are also often quiet and at rest. 2. Creative individuals tend to be smart, yet also naive at the same time. 3. Creative individuals have a combination of playfulness and discipline, or responsibility and irresponsibility. 4. Creative individuals alternate between imagination and fantasy ant one end, and rooted sense of reality at the other. 5. Creative people seem to harbor opposite tendencies on the continuum between extroversion and introversion. 6. Creative individuals are also remarkable humble and proud at the same time. 7. Creative individuals to a certain extent escape rigid gender role stereotyping and have a tendency toward androgyny. 8. Generally, creative people are thought to be rebellious and independent. 9. Most creative persons are very passionate about their work, yet they can be extremely objective about it as well. 10. The openness and sensitivity of creative individuals often exposes them to suffering pain yet also a great deal of enjoyment. When Does Creativity Happen?   The late Maya Angelou also suggested that thinking creativity helps foster even greater creativity: Creativity or talent, like electricity, is something I don't understand but something I'm able to harness and use. While electricity remains a mystery, I know I can plug into it and light up a cathedral or a synagogue or an operating room and use it to help save a life. Or I can use it to electrocute someone. Like electricity, creativity makes no judgment. I can use it productively or destructively. The important thing is to use it. You can't use up creativity. The more you use it, the... Lately my mornings have been preoccupied by writing my Morning Pages, so I have neglected the podcast somewhat, but I begin this episode by talking about my new creative outlet. After that - it's all gardening! Last weekend my dad brought the tiller down to me and I began a massive overhaul of the garden that involved moving all 250+ Root Pouches out of the garden, dumping the busted pots, removing old ground cover, tilling the soil, re-grading, and finally re-covering the garden with 3 ounce woven ground cover fabric. This will serve as a weed barrier that should last 5-7 years, plus it gives the garden a beautiful, clean aesthetic that has been lacking for quite some time. Best of all - no more weeding. I finish up the episode talking about the plants that I just transplanted yesterday, March 28th. Those included: lettuce, spinach, arugula, broccoli, & green onions. Although I'm in growing zone 6, and could get frosts up until May 15th, I'm taking my chances with the mild spring - plus these crops are all very cold hardy - and if all else fails, I've got frost blankets as a backup! Let me know if you have any questions or anything I can do to help with you gardening season this year! Jeg følger tråden fra forrige episode og vil nok en gang snakke om kreativitet. Denne gangen vil jeg innlede med en oppsummering av boken til Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi fra 1996. Den heter «Creativity: Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention». Den heter «Creativity: Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention». Here are some topics we go over in this week's episode.  Check out the full notes Creativity: Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi: I finished reading Flow a couple weeks ago and thought it'd be good to pick up Csikszentmihalyi's other book. Speaking of… Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience (also) by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi: Great book. It's from 1990 and things have probably gotten worse as far as distractions go. Deliberate practice: If you rolled your eyes hearing the phrase deliberate practice again, you're exactly the audience we're looking for. At least if you're anything like me. I can't get enough of this echo chamber! 5 Whys and 5 Hows: Judging by the results when I searched for 5 Hows, it's not exactly an original idea. That's fine.

I've been thinking a lot about letting go. See, in my life, I notice themes. Some themes take longer than others to let go of. Lately, I've been feeling like I haven't been creating from within. I've had to learn that creativity isn't a structured process – it's why I get skeptical around"professional" creative courses – WHY should someone TELL me how ot be creative?!If you're really caught up in what makes success, if you're really caught p in what you think you need to do to generate cashflow, and if it's from a place of fear – HOW WILL YOU LET CREATIVITY FLOW? For me, if I'm not regularly creating new stuff, it impacts EVERYTHING I do. I turn into a grumpy bitch if I don't create. EXERCISE: if you're not feeling like yourself, let go. Clear your schedule. Let go of the feeling that you HAVE to do something. For the next few days, give yourself permission to have space for whatever comes up. For anything. Go for a walk. Journal. Meditate. If you allow yourself to just be – what will need to come up, will. Creativity is magical. Magic can't be created by following a list.Don't miss out on more butt-kickin' and truth from Kat! This past weekend, the EthicsTalk crew attended and presented at a conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The experience was incredible and transformational. The conference, entitled, Educating for Personal & Social Responsibility, was sponsored by the Association of American Colleges & Universities where hundreds of university faculty, administrators and students shared ideas about the university’s role in cultivating character and promoting moral development. We discuss our presentation and how and why preparing and presenting at this conference transformed our ideas and relationship with each other. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s views on creativity, expressed in Creativity: Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention, will ground our discussion and we will discuss how Csikszentmihalyi’s views on creativity are applicable to both the creation of the Self and the ecology by which the Self is nurtured. Csikszentmihalyi makes the point that removing oneself from the usual surroundings in which one practices the daily rituals responsible for creativity, and placing oneself in a different environment, infuses and strengthens creativity. We discuss how this point is no less true for the Self and the community by which one is nurtured.
