Full Text of ReadingsWednesday of the Sixth Week of Easter Lectionary: 293The Saint of the day is Venerable Pierre ToussaintVenerable Pierre Toussaint's Story Born in modern-day Haiti and brought to New York City as a slave, Pierre died a free man, a renowned hairdresser, and one of New York City's most well-known Catholics. Plantation owner Pierre Bérard made Toussaint a house slave and allowed his grandmother to teach her grandson how to read and write. In his early 20s, Pierre, his younger sister, his aunt, and two other house slaves accompanied their master's son to New York City because of political unrest at home. Apprenticed to a local hairdresser, Pierre learned the trade quickly and eventually worked very successfully in the homes of rich women in New York City. When his master died, Pierre was determined to support himself, his master's widow, and the other house slaves. He was freed shortly before the widow's death in 1807. Four years later, he married Marie Rose Juliette, whose freedom he had purchased. They later adopted Euphémie, his orphaned niece. Both preceded Pierre in death. He attended daily Mass at St. Peter's Church on Barclay Street, the same parish that Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton had attended. Pierre donated to various charities, generously assisting blacks and whites in need. He and his wife opened their home to orphans and educated them. The couple also nursed abandoned people who were suffering from yellow fever. Urged to retire and enjoy the wealth he had accumulated, Pierre responded, “I have enough for myself, but if I stop working I have not enough for others.” Pierre originally was buried outside St. Patrick's Old Cathedral, where he was once refused entrance because of his race. His sanctity and the popular devotion to him caused his body to be moved to the present location of St. Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Avenue. Pierre Toussaint was declared Venerable in 1996. Reflection Pierre was internally free long before he was legally free. Refusing to become bitter, he daily chose to cooperate with God's grace, eventually becoming a compelling sign of God's wildly generous love. It's not often I feel nervous. I worked for many years as a photographer and met people from every stratum of society, from the wealthy and famous to the outcast and downtrodden. One thing I learnt early on is that nerves resulted in bad imagery. So when it came time for this podcast with Stephen Jenkinson, a man whose work I've followed for nearly a decade, I was nervous. It's not that Stephen is difficult to talk to or combative; it's because Stephen is a master of the English language, and each word he uses is carefully chosen based on its etymology. He also doesn't let you get away with anything if he believes you've incorrectly identified something. My nerves quickly abaited once I felt Stephen's generosity of spirit. This is one of the most meaningful conversations I've had. Stephen traverses: - What we have lost in our modern societies, if there is a way back, and if there were, to what we think we are to return to. - Death and our lack of education around the ultimate which every life faces. - What it truly means to cultivate a mindset that sees us creating genuine connections to one another to create communities that will benefit future generations. Most of all, Stephen reminded me that our lives are shaped by the questions we ask rather than the answers we seek—in his own words, "I'm far more in favour of the wonder of the question than the certainty of the answer." As the great poet E.E. Cummings phrased it, "Always the most beautiful answer to he who asks the most beautiful question." It was an honor to speak with Stephen, and I know you'll get something significant from his life-long pursuit of asking the most beautiful questions. It was an honor to speak with Stephen, and I know you'll get something significant from his life-long pursuit of asking the most beautiful questions. About Stephen Jenkinson, MTS, MSW ~ Culture activist/ farmer/author ~ Stephen teaches internationally and has authored seven books of cultural critique. He is the creator and principal instructor of the Orphan Wisdom School, co-founded with his wife Nathalie Roy in 2010. The School's new project, The Scriptorium (2025), is creating an archive and library of his life's work. Apprenticed to a master storyteller as a young man, he worked extensively with dying people and their families. He is former programme director in a major Canadian hospital and former assistant professor in a prominent Canadian medical school. Stephen has Masters' degrees from Harvard University (Theology) and the University of Toronto (Social Work). In 2023 Stephen received a Distinguished Alumni Honours Award from Harvard University for “helping people navigate grief, exploring the liminal space between life and death, and connecting humanity through ceremony and storytelling.” In August 2025, Sounds True will release Stephen's newest book: Matrimony: Ritual, Culture, and the Heart's Work. He is also the author of Reckoning (co-written with Kimberly Ann Johnson in 2022), A Generation's Worth: Spirit Work While the Crisis Reigns (2021), Come of Age: The Case for Elderhood in a Time of Trouble (2018), the award-winning Die Wise: A Manifesto for Sanity and Soul (2015), Homecoming: The Haiku Sessions (a live teaching from 2013), How it All Could Be: A workbook for dying people and those who love them (2009), Angel and Executioner: Grief and the Love of Life (a live teaching from 2009), and Money and The Soul's Desires: A Meditation (2002). He was a contributing author to Palliative Care – Core Skills and Clinical Competencies (2007). Since co-founding the Nights of Grief and Mystery project with singer/ songwriter Gregory Hoskins in 2015, he has toured this musical/ tent show revival/ storytelling/ ceremony of a show across North America, U.K., Ireland, Israel, Australia and New Zealand. They released their first Nights of Grief & Mystery album in 2017, and at the end of 2020 released two new records: Dark Roads and Rough Gods. A new album release is planned for 2025. Stephen Jenkinson is also the subject of the feature length documentary film Griefwalker (National Film Board of Canada, 2008, dir. Tim Wilson), a portrait of his work with dying people, and Lost Nation Road, a shorter documentary on the crafting of the Nights of Grief and Mystery tours (2019, dir. Ian Mackenzie). He was a stone sculptor turned wood-carver, and learned the arts of traditional birch bark canoe building. His first house won a Governor General's Award for architecture. He now lives on a small scale organic farm in an off-grid straw bale house. The 120 year old abandoned granary from across the river which appeared in Griefwalker was dismantled last year and re-erected at the Orphan Wisdom farm, where it is again a working barn. What does it mean to be a family in the kingdom of God? Not the idealized, airbrushed version we so often see, but the messy, beautiful, ever-evolving reality of what it means to be bound together in love. Too often, we approach family life with a set of assumptions - a blueprint we've been handed, a script we feel we must follow. But what if the way of Jesus calls us to something deeper, something more improvisational? What if being a family in the kingdom means being apprenticed to love, learning moment by moment how to will the good of one another, how to discern what faithful living looks like in our particular context? That's the invitation we'll be exploring today with my guest, Emily Hunter McGowin. Emily has thought deeply about these questions, not just in the abstract, but in the crucible of her own family story - a story of brokenness and redemption, of unlearning old ways and embracing the subversive, liberating vision of Jesus. So let's dive in. Let's wrestle with what it means to be a family that reflects the upside-down values of God's reign. To move beyond simplistic formulas and enter into the holy, gritty work of loving one another as we've been loved. The journey won't be easy, but I believe it's one that holds the promise of true, lasting freedom. So join us. Emily Hunter McGowin (PhD, University of Dayton) is associate professor of theology at Wheaton College. She is the author of Quivering Families and Christmas, and coeditor of God and Wonder. Her articles have appeared in Christianity Today and The Week. She is a priest in the Anglican diocese of Churches for the Sake of Others. Irene joins the Mind, Body, and Soil podcast for her third visit to discuss what it means to become apprenticed to your body. Better yet, a little tardiness on Kate's part at the beginning of the episode allows Kate and Irene to explore in real time the difference between a regulated and dysregulated nervous system. In it, the idea of “window of tolerance” is teased apart. All in all this is a short and sweet episode about connecting in with your body. I've been running ManTalks for almost a decade and I've met a ton of amazing people who can speak truthfully and bluntly. But no one speaks carries their truth as authentically as Stephen Jenkinson. I find a lot of what Stephen says is medicinal: you might not think it tastes great, but damn if it isn't what you need to hear. This is a deep dive into why things are the way they are. Fear of submission, love of consumption, death-phobia, the commodification of trauma, endings, what the pandemic tried to tell us, and so much more. This is from a series I produced recently called The Wisdom of Elders, featuring experts on elderhood and culture to discuss what an “elder” actually is, where we are as a species, how we got here, and where we're headed. Basically, what the f*** happened? Culture activist, teacher, and author, Stephen Jenkinson teaches internationally and is the creator and principal instructor of the Orphan Wisdom School, co-founded with Nathalie Roy in 2010, convening semi-annually in Ontario, and in northern Europe. He has a Masters degree in Theology from Harvard University and a Masters in Social Work from the University of Toronto. Apprenticed to a master storyteller when a young man, he has worked extensively with dying people and their families, was a program director in a major hospital, and an assistant professor in a prominent medical school. He is also a sculptor and traditional canoe builder, whose house won a Governor General's Award for architecture. Since co-founding Nights of Grief and Mystery with Gregory Hoskins in 2015, he has toured across North America, the U.K., Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. His new book, A Generation's Worth: Spirit Work While the Crisis Reigns, sets out to learn liveable answers. Dying and death, love and matrimony, money and soul, aging and elderhood, drawn through the eye of a pestilential needle: this is the spirit work, and that is the crisis. https://orphanwisdom.com/a-generations-worth-spirit-work-while-the-crisis-reigns He is also the author of Come of Age: The Case for Elderhood in a Time of Trouble, the award-winning Die Wise: A Manifesto for Sanity and Soul, Homecoming: The Haiku Sessions, How it All Could Be: A Workbook for Dying People and Those Who Love Them (2009), Angel and Executioner: Grief and the Love of Life (a live teaching from 2009), and Money and The Soul's Desires: A Meditation. He is contributing author to Palliative Care – Core Skills and Clinical Competencies. Stephen Jenkinson is also the subject of the feature-length documentary film Griefwalker, a portrait of his work with dying people, and Lost Nation Road, a shorter documentary on the crafting of the Nights of Grief and Mystery tours. Full Text of ReadingsFriday of the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 351All podcast readings are produced by the USCCB and are from the Catholic Lectionary, based on the New American Bible and approved for use in the United States _______________________________________The Saint of the day is Venerable Pierre ToussaintBorn in modern-day Haiti and brought to New York City as a slave, Pierre died a free man, a renowned hairdresser, and one of New York City’s most well-known Catholics. Plantation owner Pierre Bérard made Toussaint a house slave and allowed his grandmother to teach her grandson how to read and write. In his early 20s, Pierre, his younger sister, his aunt, and two other house slaves accompanied their master’s son to New York City because of political unrest at home. Apprenticed to a local hairdresser, Pierre learned the trade quickly and eventually worked very successfully in the homes of rich women in New York City. When his master died, Pierre was determined to support himself, his master’s widow, and the other house slaves. He was freed shortly before the widow’s death in 1807. Four years later, he married Marie Rose Juliette, whose freedom he had purchased. They later adopted Euphémie, his orphaned niece. Both preceded Pierre in death. He attended daily Mass at St. Peter’s Church on Barclay Street, the same parish that Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton had attended. Patrick’s Old Cathedral, where he was once refused entrance because of his race. His sanctity and the popular devotion to him caused his body to be moved to the present location of St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue. Pierre Toussaint was declared Venerable in 1996. Reflection Pierre was internally free long before he was legally free. Refusing to become bitter, he daily chose to cooperate with God’s grace, eventually becoming a compelling sign of God’s wildly generous love. In this episode I continue my captivaating conversation with davidji.davidji:· Had a 20-year career in business, finance, and mergers and acquisitions lead him to a state where he felt like he was sleepwalking through life (sound familiar?)· Apprenticed for a decade under Drs. Deepak Chopra and David Simon, serving as the Chopra Center COO, Lead Educator and then as the first Dean of Chopra Center University· Trained more than 300,000 people to meditate and certified more than 2,500 meditation teachers. What do you suggest for someone who's listening and they're thinking, I really need to give this a try? Where do I start? Suggestions for cultivating a daily meditation practice: It's about consistency versus durationYou can cultivate a practice in a small spaceStart with the 16-Second Technique (a pattern interrupt): Breath in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 secondsPractice meeting your own needs (aka: Self-Love):You're beautifulYou're doing a great jobI love youThe reason you are not meditating is NOT that you don't have time. It's because you don't think you're worth the investment. What is the ONE main benefit of a meditation practice? “We are simply cultivating our ability to witness. Witness ourselves, witness our emotions, witness our purpose in life, witness our direction, witness the world outside of us, witness other people's emotions (we call that emotional intelligence).” And we do this everything else in our lives fall into place. Feeling overwhelmed? Meditation.Looking for clarity? Meditation.Feeling disconnected? Meditation. Impatient? Meditation.Annoyed? Meditation. YOU ARE WORTH IT! Your best decision demands it.Activate your secret superpowers here with a 10-day FREE meditation series. We must remind ourselves that we have a choice in each moment, and that we can choose the best outcome or the most painful outcome. When we make the choice from a place of detachment—trusting that we are not alone and that the Universe is in control—then the highest choice wins! Welcome to Episode 81 of Building My Legacy. In this podcast, experienced leader, coach, and author Tom Connally talks about his experience with leadership. Tom’s 30 years in the Marine Corps taught him that leadership is an apprenticed vocation that requires you to keep learning and growing. As Tom explains, the best leaders “teach something every day, learn something every day” to continue to move forward, go that extra mile, and own the mission.Tom contends that everyday leadership in peacetime is much more difficult than commanding a squadron facing the enemy. Without the threat of an immediate crisis, he believes, you will have difficulty ensuring all of your people know where the mission is going. Today, with many leaders managing employees remotely, that message is even more important because it’s so difficult to develop and maintain the relationships with your staff that are critical to achieving your company goals and ultimate success. So if you want to know:– Why leaders always need to be apprentices– What you can learn from identifying the life cycle and culture of each organization you work for– Your true purpose as a leader– Why leadership is in the questions you ask– The importance of being the leader your organization needs About Tom ConnallyWith parents who served in World War II, Tom Connally learned about leadership at an early age, following his father’s instruction to do well in “school, scouts, sports, and church.” He followed his brothers into the Naval Academy and the Marine Corps, retiring after 30 years of service. Tom then worked as a director for two defense companies for five years before founding Connally Consulting to help leaders and organizations improve their performance and success. Tom is a master at using a deliberate planning process to organize, coordinate, and drive disparate teams toward a common goal with outstanding results. Tom’s daughter continues the family military legacy and is serving in the Navy today. As a gift to her, Tom wrote Becoming a Leader: A Road Map for My Daughter and the Aspiring Leader.” Although Tom believes that no book alone, including his, will make you an expert leader, this book explores the concept of leadership as a process best learned in apprenticeship to a master – because the best leaders inspire their people to achieve.Ramping Your Brand About Lois Sonstegard, PhDWorking with business leaders for more than 30 years, Lois has learned that successful leaders have a passion to leave a meaningful legacy. On Episode 180 of the Doc and Jock Podcast we are joined by Tex McQuilkin & Luke Summers to talk about why your warm-up SUCKS and why it needs to be better to perform better. The warm-up: how many of you skip this phase of your training? Or even worse just hit a couple rounds of Cindy or a casual assault bike ride and then get your barbell loaded and go? The sad truth is that most people & gyms put this amount of effort into their warm-ups and it is completely ruining workouts for athletes. Luckily for you we have Luke and Tex from Power Athlete HQ here to fix the problem. The boys just got done with their warm-up series for the CrossFit open workouts and now are working on gathering some seriously impressive data on how much better people perform with a legit warm-up. Now they are here to share the knowledge. Here are some topics we cover today: -Why the warm-up is the most important time for a coach -Heart rate > Iso-stability > Dynamics > Energy Systems for the Day > Limiting Factors & Attacking It: this is the warm-up process. What you need to know to program it. -Understanding the difference between warming up different modalities (olympic lifting v. a long metcon). We end this conversation with a left turn talking about athlete foot position for sport. If you aren't familiar with Tex here is his bio: Tex is a former collegiate lacrosse defensive midfielder, 4-year letter winner and 3-year team captain. Coached strength and conditioning collegiately with Georgetown University football, Men's and Women's lacrosse and Women's Crew, as well with the University of Texas at Austin's football program. Apprenticed under Raphael Ruiz of 1-FortyFour-1 studying proper implementation of science based, performance driven training systems. Head coached CrossFit Dupont's program for two years in Washington D.C. Received a Master's in Health Promotion Management from Marymount University in 2010, and has been a coach for Power Athlete since October, 2012. If you aren't familiar with Luke here is his bio: Luke has been training athletes in CrossFit, Weightlifting, and Olympic Lifting since 2007. He spent 6 years pushing pencils in “Corporate America,” spending 3 of those years moonlighting as a Strength & Conditioning Coach before and after work. Luke was an athlete his whole life and played multiple sports, but his primary focus was football. He played up through college until a neck injury forced him to hang it up. He travels with the CrossFit Football staff and has coaches a variety of athletes from amateur to professional levels in football, baseball, and track. Here is where to check out Luke & Tex #1. With performance at the forefront, we see the emergence of Power Athlete HQ, a site continuing where CrossFit Football leaves off; as an online resource dedicated to providing coaches and athletes of various backgrounds comprehensive insight into meeting their training goals. From day one, CrossFit Football has had a singular focus to develop strength, speed, and athleticism in its power athletes. While fitness is just one component of athleticism, efficient movement and stability are paramount in sport. We strive for perfection of movement, strength of body and mind, and put an emphasis in training as we fight. Power Athlete HQ worked with thousands of athletes ranging from amateur to professionals and have decades of experience coaching and playing at professional levels. One thing is clear: in competition, very few rise to the occasion, the majority tend to fall to the level of their training. To account for this, we believe in the persistent pursuit of perfection with our athletes.
