No. 45: Newsies '15 tour, Disneyland '55 from March 9, 2015 Contact us at comments@mousetalgia.com Mousetalgia carries the banner and reviews the current touring production of Newsies, which landed recently in San Francisco. We discuss the differences between the film and the touring production, and even some differences between the Broadway show and the current tour. Souvenirs, dancing, the music - we cover it all. Then, Dave and Becky review Disney on Ice: "Let's Celebrate," and describe the experience. (Hint: bring a kid!) Also, the Mallett family joins us to discuss visiting Disneyland almost 60 years ago in 1955 when they won a radio contest in the Golden Horseshoe and rode down Main Street in the fire truck with Abbott and Costello, and they also share their memories of the park as they grew up with it through the decades. Finally, the team participates in the recent "Story of Disneyland" auction, and we report back on our successes, failures, and some of the highlights of this much-anticipated auction of Disneyland memorabilia. Plus - in honor of Friday the 13th, we talk about unlucky moments at the Disneyland park. From duck poop encounters to Sleeping Beauty backstage in Juicy sweatpants, we recount some of the unfortunate events that have stricken the Mousetalgia crew in the past.
Today I am speaking with Jeff Hinchee, an illustrator I have admired for his stunning work in paper and 3D. He was kind enough to share his art journey with me today. Here is more about Jeff and his work: Jeff Hinchee is an illustrator and set designer. Blending 2-D and 3-D, his illustrations are an assemblage of traditional drawing and painting, cut paper relief, meticulous models, and the odd found object. His clients include Penguin Random House, The New York Times, The Washington Post, This American Life, Disney Theatrical, and Interview Magazine. His illustrations can be seen at JeffHinchee.com. For television, Jeff has created special illustrations and featured graphics for "Little America", "Single Parents", "Search Party, and "Transparent", as well as for the European Games, and numerous live musical events such as “The Wiz Live!” and “Hairspray Live!” on NBC. His extensive theatrical work for Broadway, opera and ballet can be seen at JeffHincheeDesign.com. “When pressed through the mind of Jeff Hinchee, theater, character, imagination and concept take flight in his fascinating and ebullient tableaus.” —Chance Magazine Visit his site: https://jeffhinchee.com/ Instagram: jeff_hinchee_art

Putting on a show is one of life's great joys. The process creates community, cultivates creativity and brings live performance to audiences who crave a didactic and entertaining experience from the theatre. Commercial, amateur and educational bodies who wish to procure the rights to present a musical must first apply to the representative of the authors of such properties. Whether you're an established professional or a community theatre, a licence to present a work must be obtained, to ensure the intellectual property is protected and the necessary parties receive their rightful compensation.Music Theatre International is one such agent managing an extensive library of classic and contemporary Musical fare. MTI was founded in 1952 by American composer and lyricist Frank Loesser and orchestrator Don Walker.MTI's catalogue includes legendary shows ranging from Guys and Dolls, West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof, to popular titles like Hairspray, Little Shop of Horrors and Mamma Mia! The company also represents the majority of works of Stephen Sondheim, as well as all the stage productions of Disney Theatrical and Cameron Mackintosh (including The Lion King, Mary Poppins, Miss Saigon and Les Miserables). In an attempt to make many of these titles user-friendly for a variety of keen theatre-makers, MTI has adapted many of the shows for the BROADWAY JUNIOR arm of the company. The modified editions have been a great salvation of many teachers and youth theatre groups as the show becomes more manageable and performer and audience friendly.Stuart Hendricks is the Managing Director of Music Theatre International, Australasia and knows only too well the benefits of story-telling with showtunes. His creative and collaborative approach to providing access to the shows for professional, community and school producers, his passion for every work and the form of musical theatre and his equal respect for the elements of ‘show' and ‘business' make him the perfect guardian for this vast collection of shows.Stuart joins STAGES to elaborate on the history of the company, the many ways it serves its clients and the triumph and challenge of mounting a show! The STAGES podcast is available from Apple podcasts, Spotify and Whooshkaa. Meredith and Steve are two people in the industry that we actually consider family. Steve's Broadway credits include being the longest running Beast in Beauty and the Beast, among many others. By the way if you're looking for the definition of a mullet google images of Steve Blanchard in Camelot starring Robert Goulet. Meredith Inglesby is originally from Hilton Head SC but she knew she needed to be creative so she began her professional career. Thanks to Disney Theatrical she made her debut and met her now husband Steve playing Babbette in Beauty and the Beast. We discuss how to manage your life doing 8 shows a week for a long run. How they began their “showmance” to becoming parents of their daughter Wren. They managed to raise Wren while touring the country for most of her first few years on the planet while doing the Newsies national tour. They are true optimists and have so much beautiful insight into the industry. Amidst working 16 hr days to manage the 21 productions that Disney Theatrical has shut down due to COVID-19, senior Vice President of Production, Anne Quart, joins us as our first remote guest. Recognizing her responsibility as a woman in a position of power, she created Women of Broadway in solidarity and support of all female identifying members of our community. She understands firsthand the struggles of being a mother in show business as the first women at DTG to have a baby, and as a result, implements better business practices for maternity leave in all of her productions. Wrapping up our tribute to International Women’s Month, Anne puts experience into action and her perspective and endeavors are invaluable. She also knows in her gut that Broadway will be back and that’s the just ray of hope we all need right now. Find more info about the podcast via BroadwayPodcastNetwork.com/mamas. Produced by Dori Berinstein and Alan Seales. Edited by Derek Gunther.
Broadway marketing director Michele Groner, founder of The Groner Group, sits down to talk about the many cogs that make up a Broadway marketing campaign and just where she fits in. We discuss her eclectic career across some of Broadway's biggest players including Serino Coyne, Disney Theatrical and Stage Entertainment.
This week we decided it was time to just get it out of our system and devote an entire episode to one of our favorite Disney films turned Broadway phenomenon, NEWSIES! We discussed the transition from film to stage, how under utilized the iconic actors in the film were, the song/lyric changes, what works, what doesn't... We also spent some time discussing the Original Broadway Cast and how wonderful they all are. There cannot be enough good things said about NEWSIES. Disney struck gold when they decided to take a chance on the little show that could- it continued to surprise Disney Theatrical over and over and was one of the most successful and beloved Broadway shows of the decade. This week we continue our conversation with Robert Falls, the Tony-winning artistic director of the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. In addition to being well-known for directing classics like Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman and Eugene O’Neill’s The Iceman Cometh and Long Day’s Journey Into Night, Bob has worked on such possibly surprising material as the Elton John and Tim Rice musical Aida, and that’s where we pick up our conversation. Featuring the joy of working with actors; collaborating with Elton John, Tim Rice, and David Henry Hwang; tales of working on John Logan’s Red, and Shakespeare’s Winter’s Tale and Measure for Measure; why and how we're drawn to certain plays or genres; false distinctions; some terrible phrasing and important corrections; why, for all the comedies Bob directs, he may be more of a tragedian; and the dual pleasures of tearing plays apart — and an audience’s heart out. (Length 18:54) (Pictured: (l-r) Disney Theatrical's Thomas Schumacher, Elton John, and Robert Falls in rehearsal for Aida, 2000.) On today’s episode, we discuss a much lesser known musical from Disney Theatrical, On the Record. This musical only ran from November 2004 to July 2005. We also discuss the release dates for Rise of the Resistance at Galaxy’s Edge. What did you think of our discussion? Will you be adding this to your Disney library? Chase Brock brought "finger tutting" -- a style of digital choreography -- to Broadway as The Squip's signature language in the viral musical sensation "Be More Chill." But Be More Chill is not Chase’s only accomplishment, by a long shot. He made his Broadway debut at age 16 after moving to New York alone as a teenager; he formed his own dance company, The Chase Brock Experience, at age 23; he worked on Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark as it was transitioning between creative teams, working carefully to honor his idol (and mine) Julie Taymor even as she exited the project; and he is currently choreographing Hercules: The Musical, a groundbreaking collaboration between Disney Theatrical and The Public Theatre’s Public Works Initative, which casts community members from all five New York City boroughs alongside equity actors to emphasize that theatre does in fact belong to the people. Chase is one of the most colorful people I know, not just because of his trademark mis-matched-yet-somehow-perfectly-harmonically-patterned fashion choices but also because of his enthusiasm, joyfulness, open heart, creativity and willingness to let his true self shine through. In a world that often rewards convention, Chase has embraced and broadcast a commitment to invention instead, both on and off the stage.

Jambeaux, everyone!!! Welcome to another episode of the Magic Our Way podcast...count ‘em: TWO, TWO, TWO IN A ROW!!! Woo hoo!!! or Woot!!! as the kids like to say. While waiting in the Queue, Danny and Kevin discuss a new event happening at Downtown Disney which is being called Carmasters Weekend. Also, this year’s D23 Expo attendees will be treated to a spectacular musical review in a production exclusive to this expo entitled Broadway and Beyond. This unique production will feature numerous stars from the Disney Theatrical universe. The Muppets Take Broadway...that’s all I have to say about that. Epcot’s Food and Wine Festival Registration opens soon. Are you ready for all the scrumptiousness headed your way? In the Hub, Kevin and Danny discuss ways to keep cool during this time of the travel year. Ladies and Gentleman, it’s hot!!! Since some of you will be touring the parks during this time of year, Kevin wanted to discuss the ways in which he keeps himself and, more importantly, his little ones cool especially when traversing the World in their stroller. Many of these points can be applied to adults as well. So, with a little planning, you can stay safe, stay cool, and stay sane while touring the parks during the hot months. Just like Florida says, “Arrive Alive” which can also be taken to mean, when you arrive here and start doing what you are doing, make sure you do it smart so that you can “depart alive” too. Maybe that was a little stretch, but you get the idea. As always, if you like the show, please rate us and leave a review in the iTunes Store. We do appreciate you taking the time to do so.
