I remember back in 2008 when I started working full-time in a digital marketing role. It was a techie role that liaised with techies - it wasn't real marketing - it was playing online. At least that's what many traditional marketers thought at the time. Fast forward 13 years and in many arenas, digital has overtaken traditional. And that's meant that the size of digital marketing teams has grown exponentially... Which in turn draws our attention to digital marketing leadership - what are the skills you need to be an effective digital marketing leader? That's precisely what I'm going to be discussing with my guest on Digital Marketing Radio episode 255. He's a former VP of SEO and Content at G2 - and a current Director of SEO at Shopify - welcome to DMR - Kevin Indig.

Starting your own business is never an easy task and takes a lot of your efforts. While many start-up owners include marketing strategies in their business plan, many still believe in taking that step a little later. Although, pretty much every company develops its marketing strategies at some point in their tenure, earlier the better. Start-ups don't succeed just based on the great idea, team or funding that they have. They need to get their sales going, reach out to more customers, build a market appeal for their business and need to invest in good marketing strategies along with personnel. A digital marketing strategy for startups is a different ball-game altogether. You can't apply the same science that you use for established companies here.
The reason we’re doing Facebook versus Google is because we get questions like this all the time, about this topic. Should I be doing Google? Should I be doing Facebook? Should I be doing both? We’re going to go through all that today in this episode and answer that for you. And there’s no better way to do that, but to have Kasim Aslam on the show today, he’s the founder and CEO of Solutions 8, one of the world’s top ranked Google ads agency. We work pretty closely together and refer business back and forth to each other because it’s just too complicated to be good at ads within both platforms, and we’re both dedicated to provided the best service we can for our clients.During this fascinating and insightful conversion:– We chat about the differences between the two platforms, and what to expect when signing up for the Google ads experience.– Kasim blows our minds with a deep dive into all the ways Google touches our lives, and how much data they are actually gleaning from their multitude of touch points.– For example, Kasim reveals Google reaches about 90% of every internet user on the planet, and about 65% of those every day.– Google has a mind-blowing 70 million demographic and psychographic profiling factors that they use in order to catalog people, Facebook has 55,000.– In fact, with Google Analytics on 99% of front-facing websites, and all of their other touchpoints (Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Drive, etc.) their AI algorithm works so well, the engineers at Google don’t know exactly how it works.– We also go into a powerful discussion about how the iOS update is impacting both Facebook and Google. (Note: For both, we recommend you hiring a professional. It’s no longer easy for someone to do on their own or without a specialist.)– The question about why you should not write one check to one agency is answered. (Answer: It’s all so complex, no single agency will have the knowledge and inside connections to serve you the best.)– And so much more!In the end, we reveal that for businesses of different sizes at different points in their growth, Facebook may be better or Google may be better. But when you combine the power of both, they will work more efficiently and give you a better ROAS for a variety of reasons. So, listen to this amazing conversation, we learned a lot and I’m sure you will too!All right. The Profitable Website: Digital Marketing Secrets For Small Business Success
I don’t know what it was like when you were a kid, but when I was growing up, I’d usually get a bit of money for my birthday. Now I’m not talking “crazy money” here—I mean the kind of “10 dollars taped into a card from Great-Aunt Edna” that you probably got too. For me, that was the best—both because it meant I had to be intentional about what I bought, but also because I knew I was going to buy SOMETHING… Sure enough, that money always got spent on one awesome toy or another—and I rarely borrowed more than I had from my parents. Why does all this matter? Well, as today’s podcast guest would tell you, having a budget when it comes to your marketing can be just as liberating. Rich Brooks has been the founder and president of Flight New Media, a digital agency in Portland, Maine, for nearly a quarter-century. And as Rich explains, a marketing budget can be just as fun to spend as Edna’s ten-spot was back in the day. First, because it directs your thinking toward results—and consequently helps you get them. If you only have so much to spend, you’re going to spend it wisely. And second, knowing you have money to spend on marketing means that money is ABSOLUTELY getting spent on marketing… Which is going to lead to the kind of business success you just don’t see without investing in growth. I had a great time talking to Rich, and it turned out to be a really fascinating episode, and I think you’re really going to enjoy this one too. You’ll never look at your marketing the same way again. Check out his websites

Fact: Websites are totally over-rated as marketing tools. They aren't even an "online presence" anymore. If you're living in the past and think all you need is a website in order to be "present" online, then this podcast is for you. Online marketing or digital marketing is constantly changing, especially if you are interested in (or committed to) making authentic, meaningful connections with your prospects, customers, clients, or community. In order to create a relationship, your marketing cannot be "one and done." You need to have an on-going conversation with your audience. In marketing terms, "multiple touches" are required. For this reason, a consistently valuable social media presence and equally valuable email communications are essential. This episode summarizes 3 key reasons why a website alone is no longer an effective strategy for online marketing. It also offers a fresh approach that can help you build more meaningful connections online. Enjoy! This was a fun lively interview with a fascinating marketer. Are you eager to begin with digital marketing but don’t know where to start? These three basic skills and other tips from Arti Sharma will surely help you when it comes to getting started with digital marketing. Arti has been in the industry for a while and is producing great results for her clients in Canada. She’s currently helping business owners get better results with the exact strategies that she’s using in her own business. Key Questions Asked: How did Arti get started with digital marketing? What is the first skill every business owner must cultivate or to develop in order to succeed in the digital world? What sort of things do they need to have on their website for it to be of value to the people visiting? What us the next aspect of critical skill that business owners need to develop in order to succeed in the digital world? Where should business owners put their focus on if they want to increase their presence and get more clients? What advice would Arti give to business owners? Highlights of Lessons Learned: First Skill: If you have a budget for a website, then it’s a good place to start, having your online branding intact and having it in a succinct manner is important. There are three things you need to understand if you’re designing your own website: First, as a business owner, your website’s your salesperson and you have to make sure that your website speaks to your audience first, so write down the purpose of your website, write down who is the targeted audience that your website will serve and what kind of information will they take away from here. Finally, you want the brief to identify what are the calls to action you need to have your audience who visits you take. Make sure that your brief is clean and crisp, use some modern buttons as well as colors that resonate with your target audience. The next skill business owners need to know once they have a website is how to focus on and make sure that people are sticking to the website. This is about ongoing content marketing and making sure your website is being found. When you build a website make sure that it is responsive, that it is set up in a way that it switches the design on every mobile device and that it creates a user experience and also ultimately will convert better for you. It is also important to optimize your site for local searches. Arti strongly believes that content is still key and relevant content is all the more important. Another step that Arti finds to be very important is the email marketing. There are so many messages out there, so integrating your marketing message is important, and touching with these techniques or strategies is all the more fruitful for you as a business owner if you can combine those two. If you’re one of those people who are starting out and want to reach more audience fairly quickly, Arti suggests for you to invest in social media and content marketing. Choose one to two that you really know how to work and then do them really well, consistency is important. It’s all about connections and contents today when it comes to digital marketing, so the more you share other people’s content, you tap into other people’s connections equally well. OPC means Other People’s Content plus Other People’s Connections – tapping into that leads to more abundance. Arti advises start-up business owners to seek for a mentor, and if your business and your working capital allow, then hire a business strategist or a business coach early on. Don’t be shy to ask for help.
