Episode 023: The Subconscious Simmer - Sometimes Stepping Away Is The Most Efficient Next Step Host: Dr. Ed ToriPodcast: Influence Every Day Episode Summary: In this enlightening episode of the Influence Every Day podcast, Dr. Ed Tori dives into the concept of the "Subconscious Simmer." Have you ever had a Eureka moment in the shower, while driving, or just as you're about to fall asleep? Dr. Tori explains that these moments of sudden clarity and creativity often occur during what he refers to as "trance states"—times when your subconscious mind is hard at work making connections beneath the surface. Dr. Tori discusses how stepping away from a problem or task—whether it's taking a walk, gazing at the ocean, or simply letting an idea simmer—can be the most efficient next step in solving complex problems. He illustrates this with examples like Albert Einstein's approach to problem-solving and the story of how the design of bullet trains was inspired by a simple observation in nature. But it's not all about the positive. Dr. Tori also warns about the flip side: the negative effects of subconscious simmering when our brains are filled with unhealthy or irrelevant information. He emphasizes the importance of controlling your inputs, especially during these trance states, to avoid the “anti-Eureka” moments of anxiety and fear. Key Takeaways: Subconscious Simmer: Your brain continues working on problems subconsciously, making important connections even when you're not actively thinking about them. Trance States: These are natural states we enter throughout the day, such as when we're absorbed in a book, lost in thought, or simply watching the waves. These states are critical for deep subconscious processing. Stepping Away: Sometimes the most efficient step in problem-solving is to step away, allowing your subconscious to work its magic. Negative Inputs: Be mindful of what you expose your brain to, especially during trance states. Passive consumption of negative or irrelevant content can lead to anxiety and hinder creative problem-solving. Actionable Advice: Deliberate Simmering: Before jumping into action on a new idea or problem, take some time to let it simmer. Step away and return to it later with a fresh perspective. Control Your Inputs: Protect your subconscious by being selective about the information and environments you expose yourself to, particularly during times of high suggestibility. “It's about sowing the right seeds. Seeds which will sprout, which will take root. And so how do we do that? We can't have change overnight, but we need to create a pipeline of the next generation of inventors, thinkers. Though we're a little dot in this globe, we have that opportunity to nurture them. Many times, I go back to Lee Kuan Yew. He dreamt big. We've enjoyed the bounty, how do we take it forward?” Inspired by Singapore's Founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew's love for nature, environmentalist Kirtida Mekani mooted the country's Plant-A-Tree programme back in the day. It's an initiative where organisations and individuals can, for a donation of $300, plant a tree in the green spaces managed by the National Parks Board, or NParks. Fast forward to today, she's an ardent advocate of biomimicry adoption. With the urgency to tackle climate change growing, she strongly believes that biomimicry is the path forward for science and engineering On this episode of Climate Connections, Kirtida Mekani, Environmentalist & 2024 Inductee, Singapore Women's Hall of Fame shares insights from her decades-long commitment to environmental causes, and the eureka moment that got her on this green journey. Wine brings pleasure. But for some it can also prove painful. Red wine is particularly problematic for a proportion of the population, with just a few mouthfuls bringing on swift and excruciating headaches. Now scientists think they may finally be on to why. In lab experiments, they've identified a compound in red wine that impedes the breakdown of alcohol by the liver and causes a build-up of toxic acetaldehyde in the bloodstream. Human trials are still needed for confirmation - but these are exciting findings. In this episode, we discuss these results with the scientists behind them: Professor Andrew Waterhouse and Dr Apramita Devi from the University of California, Davis. As for the BIG question - which red wines might be safer for sufferers - there's good news. The experts actually recommend cheap rather than pricey red wines. Yes, you read that right: the boffins are endorsing the bargains! We explain why as well as providing some top tips for bargain basement reds - we also touch on the tantalising prospect of how this research may help us understand hangovers too.A final note: research like this costs money and yet neither governments nor big companies want to fund it (a crying shame). As a result, the team at UC Davis has launched a Crowdfunder. If you'd like to contribute, or find out more, click here: Red Wine Headaches ProjectThanks for tuning in. Does acting on values hurt the bottom line? According to Daniel Aronson, Founder and CEO of Valutus, the answer is no—in fact, the converse is true. In his new book, The Value of Values, Daniel shows that making ethical choices can actually increase a company's profits and competitive advantage, often without much extra cost or risk.Using research and real-world examples, Daniel explains that the true business value of ethical actions—like taking strong steps to fight climate change, supporting job seekers, or creating an inclusive workplace—is higher than most people think. He finds that these actions can bring returns four to ten times greater than expected. Daniel joins host Carol Cone to talk about The Value of Values and how the book can help business leaders improve profits, gain customers, and advance their careers by making ethical choices. This book is a valuable resource for anyone looking to lead with integrity in today's business world. Pawel Mysliwiec, a fellow professional Scrum trainer with Scrum.org, joins host Ryan Ripley on the "Becoming a Scrum Master" podcast. Pawel's Entry into Scrum: Pawel recounts his initial, unknowing encounter with Scrum while working as a product manager on bank credit transaction software. He participated in what he later learned were Scrum meetings, such as the daily Scrum, without realizing it was part of Scrum methodology. Eureka Moment in Scrum: Pawel experienced his transformative moment with Scrum on a complex project within a waterfall program. He managed two teams and decided to apply Scrum internally while maintaining a project manager facade externally. This led to successful incremental deliveries and effective collaboration between business and IT personnel, which was a revelation to him. Evolution of Scrum Master Role: Pawel reflects on the evolution of the Scrum Master role, emphasizing the shift from understanding and practicing Scrum to ensuring the team's long-term success and delivering financial value. He believes the role encompasses facilitating team effectiveness and reliability and helping teams become examples of good practice. Advice for Aspiring Scrum Masters: Pawel advises patience and resilience as key traits for Scrum Masters. Change doesn't happen overnight, and a good Scrum Master should be resilient enough to keep trying while being patient for the change to occur. He also suggests a learning-by-doing approach and recommends reading books on Scrum Mastery, particularly for beginners.
Coming from a development background, John Riley first encountered scrum around 2004, initially attracted to it due to its focus on agility and better project outcomes. Despite an early failure in an agile transformation attempt due to limited understanding and lack of support, he remained interested in Scrum. Shift to Scrum Master Role: Riley's profound engagement with Scrum began in 2010 while working on a banking application. Impressed by the effectiveness of a scrum environment and inspired by the scrum master of his team, he decided to pursue the scrum master role himself, taking over after the departure of the original scrum master. Eureka Moment and Evolution in Approach: Riley's approach to scrum evolved significantly after a candid conversation with team members who felt he was too rigid in his methods. This led to his realization that scrum is a flexible framework rather than a strict set of rules, prompting him to adopt a more observational and indirect coaching style. Advice for Aspiring Scrum Masters: He emphasizes the importance of finding a mentor for guidance and challenges, advocating for a mindset open to learning and adapting. Riley also suggests pairing up with someone experienced to better understand the agile and scrum mindsets. Book Recommendation and Conclusion: Riley recommends "Drive" by Daniel Pink as a crucial read for scrum masters, highlighting its insights into leadership and motivation. He underscores the importance of intrinsic motivation in the scrum master role.

Today we reflect on the series. I hope you are not overwhelmed by all the material. The idea is not to become instantly perfect in all areas, but rather to ask God to reveal which area he would wish you to develop. Has something stood out? Let me list the main topics we have covered. The case for expository preaching What's the Big Idea? Tools of the Trade The road from text to sermon The Arrow and the Target The Shapes Sermons Take Making Dry Bones Live Start with a Bang and Quit All Over The Dress of Thought How to Preach so People will Listen A Final Word In re-reading the book for the AIM homiletics module and this series, the area that God has pointed me to is a combination of the “Big Idea” and the “Arrow and the target”. I am seeing the value in simplifying more of my messages to ensure they have one main idea and a clear target. The result has been tighter, shorter lessons (on the whole). What is your main takeaway? We have two more teaching tips left in 2023. Next week we will reflect on teaching and preaching lessons from the year, and the week after explore preaching and teaching growth for 2024. Consider joining AIM UK&Ireland to develop your understanding of Scripture: https://aimukandireland.com/. Our current module is Homiletics (the preparation and delivery of lessons). On October 16, 1843, while on a stroll along the Royal Canal in Dublin, mathematician William Rowan Hamilton had an aha moment which led to his famed discovery of the algebraic equations known as quaternions which is now etched on the bridge. Research shows that although creative insight and analytical thinking are distinct modes of thought, they do complement each other. These aha or eureka moments are typically considered the manifestation of creativity in a few creative geniuses; however, having access to one's own creative process can be different for different people. On this episode, professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Drexel University, Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science and the Psychonomic Society, and international best-selling author, John Kounios, Ph.D., discusses the process and science of creative insight and analytical thinking that marks our discovery of a brilliant solution for small or big problems. We all need strong Executive Function mastery to counter the effects of a lack of insight and a lack of immersive experience into “problematic” components which can take away the focus needed for solving one's own problems.About John KouniosJohn Kounios, PhD, is a professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Drexel University. He has published cognitive neuroscience research on insight, creativity, problem solving, memory, and Alzheimer's disease and coauthored (with Mark Beeman) the international Amazon Bestseller, The Eureka Factor: Aha Moments, Creative Insight, and the Brain (Random House). John's research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation and has been reported by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Times (London), National Public Radio and was featured in BBC Television and Discovery Science Channel documentaries. His work was profiled by The New Yorker and The Saturday Evening Post and is part of a permanent exhibit at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry.
