"Vigilantism” - it's a word that conjures images of lynch mobs and frontier justice. But today, both would be Presidents and state governments are not just turning a blind eye to vigilantes, they're actively encouraging them. From Virginia's tip line for parents to snitch on teachers, to Texas unleashing bounty hunters against abortion providers, to Florida encouraging drivers to run over protesters - vigilantism is becoming the new normal in American politics. My guest, Jon Michaels, argues in 'Vigilante Nation' that this represents a concerted effort by right-wing politicians, pundits, and preachers to subvert democracy and cement their hold on power. The pattern they expose should concern us all."

Episode Notes Virginia is home to four of the ten richest counties in America -- all in Northern Virginia. Virginia is also home to some of the most economically distressed counties in America -- all in Southwest Virginia. And of all fifty states, Virginia has the largest gap between the minimum wage and the bare minimum needed to support a family of four. That's according to the Commission Examining Racial Inequity in Virginia Law, set up during Ralph Northam's administration back in 2019. The commission released three reports covering the consequences of structural racism in Virginia. Later in the show, we sit down with the Vice-Chair of the commission, Andrew Block. He'll share what they found and what progress has been made since. But first we talk with sociologist Lawrence Eppard. He co-authored the 2021 study, “Social and Economic Costs of Inequality in the State of Virginia.” Turns out there are big disparities in social mobility across Virginia. Which is to say... in some counties, it's a lot harder for people born in low-income families to escape poverty. Eppard breaks down what inequality of place looks like... and its consequences. Eppard also hosts the podcast Utterly Moderate, the official podcast of the Connors Forum for a Healthy Democracy. Listen here! The Commission Examining Racial Inequity in Virginia Law released three reports from 2019-2022. Check them out below: From Virginia's Law Books Identifying and Addressing the Vestiges of Inequity and Inequality in Virginia's Laws Identifying Virginia's Racially Discriminatory Laws and Inequitable Economic Policies
From Virginia to San Francisco, election results are being ruled by parents who want the best for the families. The party that delivers best on their priorities will win the mid-terms.
George Washington's rise constitutes one of the greatest self-reinventions in history. In his mid-twenties, this third son of a modest Virginia planter had ruined his own military career thanks to an outrageous ego. But by his mid-forties, that headstrong, unwise young man had evolved into an unassailable leader chosen as the commander in chief of the fledgling Continental Army. By his mid-fifties, he was unanimously elected the nation's first president. From Virginia's House of Burgesses, where Washington mastered the craft and timing of a practicing politician, to his management of local government as a justice of the Fairfax County Court to his eventual role in the Second Continental Congress and his grueling generalship in the American Revolution, Washington perfected the art of governing and service, earned trust, and built bridges. The lessons in leadership he absorbed along the way would be invaluable during the early years of the republic as he fought to unify the new nation. David O. Stewart turned to writing after a career practicing law in Washington, DC, defending accused criminals and challenging government actions as unconstitutional. He is a national bestselling and award-winning author of four previous books on American history.

Freddie's husband, Glen, had the honor of being the original vineyard manager that watched over the vineyard while the others maintained their jobs as a teacher, dentist, book keeper and carpenter. In the early years, grapes were sold to fresh markets, other vineyards, & to the public. At the turn of the century, Williard & his son, Bob started their own quest to create wine from the family vineyard. Starting with just a few varieties of wine, the doors opened and in 2003 the first bottle was sold. The father & son pair enjoyed working side by side fine tuning their award winning wines until 2013, when Williard passed away. Bob, with his family's reassurance, support (and secret recipe,) now operates Hinnant Family Vineyards & Winery. Over the years, Willard & Bob acquired all of the land and holdings from Williard's siblings. Building upon the original acreage growing to a 100 acres of grapes, the Hinnant Family Vineyards & Winery is the oldest and largest commercial Muscadine vineyard in the state of North Carolina. The Hinnant Family has also become experts on other native grapes. From Virginia; the Norton grape takes up approximately 2 acres and is handcrafted to produce their driest, most complex red, offering oak, vanilla and spice notes! From Texas; they have a couple acres of an American hybrid Blanc du Bois. The fruit offers intense grapefruit, pineapple, and passion fruit flavors. From the very beginning, there has been long standing tradition to open the Vineyard to the public during the harvest season. Every September Hinnant Family Vineyards & Winery encourages the public to come out and pick their own Muscadine grapes. A large white tent marks the start of the Harvest season & stands at the front of the business to welcome customers. There you can purchase pre-picked grapes, or pick up a bucket & head out into the vineyard. We invite you to come take part in this annual Hinnant Family Tradition. Regardless of the season, the Hinnant Family invites you to visit the vineyard to see how their dream has developed. SNOW'D INNThis is a winter seasonal. A dry white wine infused with cranberry. By age twenty-two, George Washington was acclaimed as a hero. As a commander of the Virginia Regiment, he gave orders to men decades older than himself. He was good at most things he tried and his name was known throughout British North America and England. Yet his military career came to ashes when he was twenty-seven. He tumbled down in power and was reduced to arguing on a law in the Virginia House of Burgesses of the banning of pigs running loose. His life is a story of careful reinvention from early missteps, culminating in his unanimous election as the nation's first president. But how did Washington emerge from a military leader to the highest office in the country?Today’s guest, David Stewart – author of George Washington: The Political Rise of America’s Founding Father, says that Washington has often been portrayed as less eloquent and politically savvy than peers, but his political skills were second to none. From Virginia's House of Burgesses, where Washington learned the craft and timing of a practicing politician, to his management of local government as a justice of the Fairfax County Court, to his eventual role in the Second Continental Congress and his grueling generalship in the American Revolution, Washington perfected the art of governing and service, earned trust, and built bridges. The lessons in leadership he absorbed along the way proved invaluable during the early years of the republic as he fought to unify the new nation. We look at five treacherous political minefields that Washington navigated in his career, including: • Bringing his army through a winter of despair at Valley Forge in 1778, while thwarting a combination to supersede him as commander in chief, then winning a crucial battle at the Monmouth Court House• Persuading mutinous, unpaid soldiers and officers to lay down their arms and embrace peace in 1783, then playing the crucial role in resolving the nation’s political chaos with a new constitution in 1787• Leading the new federal government as it was created from next to nothing, then guiding the bargain for a financial program that restored the nation’s credit and ensured its solvency• Keeping the nation out of the European war that followed the French Revolution, cooling passionate American adherents of both France and Britain• Struggling, in his final years, with human slavery, hoping to point his countrymen toward repentance and even redemption.

Alison Feliciano at 5 Credit Restoration Mark Hall. As always I am going to share some investing tips for you and answer a few questions. Later in the show I’m going to tell you why I prefer RE investing to stocks. But first let’s check some emails. Wrap up with about 7 minutes Open: Mailbag: From Tyler in Tampa, FL. “Roger do you have some guidance for what you would pay for a rental property and where you would buy it?” Rent times 60 is almost always a good deal. Stable neighborhood or one with upside. Avoid chronically bad parts of town. Who wants to live there? Only people who want that lifestyle or who can’t afford to get anywhere else. Our heart goes out to good people who are struggling financially. Been there done that. We can do things to help out in other ways including support for local and national housing charities. But this is business and it is not a good business decision to own assets in areas like this. Small low maintenance homes. - brick is great. Duplex, Triplex, Quad - usually excellent choices. The town doesn’t matter that much to me as long as I can find good property management. I recommend you secure the property manager before you close on the purchase. I also recommend purchasing multiple properties in the same area if possible to get you preferred treatment from the property management. From Virginia in Atlanta, GA. “Roger I need some help. I am a real estate agent and I see properties out there that look like a good deal, and I know I want to get involved in investing, but I’m nervous. I haven’t done this before and even though I know a lot about the transaction, I don’t know for sure whether I can make money and I don’t know how to get the rehab done correctly and most of all, I don’t have enough cash to buy the property and fix it. Is there anything I can do and if so, what?” Virginia that’s a GREAT question. I hear this one probably more than any other.
