Gold Coast metal outfit Awake In Time are living proof that hard work and determination does pay dividends. Since their formation in 2018 the guys have played at Good Things Festival and more recently Wallapalooza earlier this year, proving in the process their stage performance is capable of at the very least matching that of better known and more established bands. This year has seen Awake In Time go harder than ever before, releasing the awesome single Panic last month before heading out on tour with Diskust for the recently completed Awake For A Diskusting Time run of shows. With more new music planned before the year is out, CJ Nash cornered Awake In Time vocalist Alex Nelson to discuss the rise and rise of the band."In a way it was, because we feel like it's one of the strongest songs we've released," Nelson replied when asked if the overwhelmingly positive response to Panic was expected. "We feel like we're kind of going in a little bit different direction that's more us. A little bit of a heavier direction as well and I think the recording quality was a lot better with the mixing and mastering and just taking our time with these releases rather than getting them done and throwing them out there."That song was one of the standouts on their recent tour with Diskust, with Nelson smiling when asked how the series of shows came about."It was a bit of a funny one," he smirked. "We have a pretty good bond and friendship with the guys in Diskust so this was something that I believe Lance and Kyle came up with one night on the beers and thought it would be a great idea to throw the invite our way. It was more to do something for fun with a bunch of mates rather than focussing too much on the numbers coming to the shows, and all about the music. It was more about lets do this with a whole bunch of people that we really like and we get along with and can have a great time with. I think the end result really shows that. We had such a fun time together just doing stupid stuff and enjoying each others company. There was some really good shows in there as well and we were lucky enough to have some awesome bands jump on board with us as supports."Listen to the full audio interview to hear CJ press Alex with even more stories about Awake In Time and what the future holds.

On the inaugural day of Truth and Reconciliation, Olympic Champion, Alwyn Morris joined Matt and Blake to talk to him about his thoughts on this day. Alwyn talked about what he hopes this day can become in the future and what it is right now. He talked about his top of the podium moment where he raised an eagle feather. Alwyn talked about why he did it and what went into the iconic moment. It was a very important sharing moment and talked about the memory of his grandfather, who didn’t get to see it before he passed. Explained that some people equated it to the black power movement, even though that was not at all meant to be the case. Talked about if he faced any backlash from the IOC, as you wouldn’t be able to do that these days. Alwyn talked about running the torch in 2009 en route to the 2010 games and what it was like to have his mother and children with him. He talked about the origins of his career and how it intertwined with him working with non-indigenous athletes and how that’s what reconciliation really means to him. When two people with two different backgrounds can get together and work together. Alex Nelson, member of the Musgamagw – Tsawatainuek tribes of the Kwakwala- speaking people and member of the BC Sports Hall of Fame joined Matt and Blake to talk about what this day means to him. Says that we are all so close and one family. We see Canada as one country, one province and one city. In his mind we are all one. He talked about being a Residential School survivor. Talked about being a founder of the Aboriginal Sports and Recreation Association and how sport has helped him along his journey. Still playing soccer at age 73, you can’t help but think it has helped him. Thomas Drance of the Athletic joined Matt and Blake and started off, after getting past SB halftime shows, talking about advances in negotiations for 40&43. He has heard that there has been progress which is different from what he has heard in the days leading up. Isn’t calling it a breakthrough yet. There has been frustration behind the scenes with both sides believing that they have given everything they have. Clearly one side has blinked, giving cautious optimism. Talked about the Hamonic situation. JPat in his regular spot started chatting about how the Canucks addressed truth and reconciliation day. Shortly after he came on, the smoke was starting to heat up on Pettersson and Hughes. The guys go into the numbers that the they are looking to sign for. Both term and money. Rick Dhaliwal joined the show last minute after there was some movement on the Pettersson and Hughes negotiations. Said that if he is Travis Green, he would be pretty pissed. Talked about the numbers. Rick talked about all the guys that aren’t here is tough. As soon as Dahlin’s contract was finished, there was more movement with Hughes. Alwyn talked about what he hopes this day can become in the future and what it is right now. He talked about his top of the podium moment where he raised an eagle feather. Alwyn talked about why he did it and what went into the iconic moment. It was a very important sharing moment and talked about the memory of his grandfather, who didn't get to see it before he passed. Explained that some people equated it to the black power movement, even though that was not at all meant to be the case. Talked about if he faced any backlash from the IOC, as you wouldn't be able to do that these days. Alwyn talked about running the torch in 2009 en route to the 2010 games and what it was like to have his mother and children with him. He talked about the origins of his career and how it intertwined with him working with non-indigenous athletes and how that's what reconciliation really means to him. Still playing soccer at age 73, you can't help but think it has helped him. Thomas Drance of the Athletic joined Matt and Blake and started off, after getting past SB halftime shows, talking about advances in negotiations for 40&43. He has heard that there has been progress which is different from what he has heard in the days leading up. Isn't calling it a breakthrough yet. Rick talked about all the guys that aren't here is tough. As soon as Dahlin's contract was finished, there was more movement with Hughes. These are two elite players who want to play. Looks like they will announce the deals tonight. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Psychedelics have unfortunately been bastardized by our Western culture. Plant medicines were not intended for you to use to trip at the club (though no judgment). They are actually a powerful spiritual tool and guide to invite us into our truth and highest self. I can't think of anyone better than Alex Nelson, entrepreneur, life transformation coach, retreat facilitator, and my friend, to walk us through a grounded introduction to how and why we can consciously engage in plant medicines. We talked about the 3 essential components to a safe and transformational ceremony: set, setting, and sitting. We talked a lot about intentionality versus escapism. This is the perfect episode for anyone just starting to be interested in working with plant medicines. We covered the importance of the container you set before and after the ceremony, and Alex gives us his recommendation for a healthy and supportive progression. One of my favorite lines from the episode is, "This isn't the psychedelic Olympics. You don't need to win the title of most drugs done." Plant medicines are a sexy topic, and sure, it sounds cool to drop into a major Ayahuasca ceremony right out of the gate, but this episode is here to remind you that psychedelics are a spiritual tool, and should be treated as such. All of the things we covered, from inviting more joy into your life to acting with high intentionality are also just great spiritual strategies for life in general. Alex said it perfectly, "Life's a ceremony. Treat it as such." Alex Nelson was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Alex Nelson is the student leader for the Glasgow Navigators.About The NavigatorsThe Navigators has grown out of one man’s pursuit of God. Dawson Trotman lived in America. As he sought God, the Lord promised to build him ‘a house’. At a time when the Christian world saw no ministry beyond evangelism, he was led to invest deeply in the lives of the few in order that they could reach the many. This began in the 1930s with US Navy personnel. It grew significantly through WWII. Following the war the Navigators spread out through the world, it is now in over 100 countries world wide. The Navigators came to the UK through the Billy Graham crusades of the 1950s. Billy Graham, frustrated by the unwillingness of local Christians to help those who came forwards at his meetings, asked Dawson Trotman to develop what has since become known as “follow-up”. The Navigators therefore supported Dr Graham in all his crusades. During the Haringey crusades, Christians’ eyes were opened to the possibilities of discipleship, and asked the Navigators to minister in the UK. Initially Joyce Turner came to set up an office for materials and as she did this she also began a ministry among women. As interest developed, more Navigators came to set up ministries in communities and universities, which became the starting block for the current ministry.https://navigators.co.uk/glasgow/Presented by David Meredithwww.generation-mission.orgTitle Music and Production: Simon Kennedy

“We’re like, in a global psychedelic trip right now.” “It is all ceremony.” - Disclaimer: What we talk about on In My Truth tends to be very raw and can be triggering. Resources for support and help are included at the end of show notes - scroll down for more information. - “Every single rule we ever think about is just made up.” - Welcome back to this week’s episode of In My Truth. I’m so happy to be back recording again! Just yesterday I recorded my episode with Zoe which was amazing (you can listen here: https://www.sarahriegelhuth.com/podcast-episodes/zoe-winther) that hopefully provided a bit of content on why the show went missing for a few months. And today, our guest is the man I was talking about in that episode! Luckily you can’t see me, because I’m probably a little bit red sitting here with the amazing man, Joe Hawley! We’ve known each other for over a year through the Aubrey Marcus Fit For Service Fellowship (https://www.aubreymarcus.com/pages/fit-for-service-fellowship), but we never really connected until a plant medicine retreat in Minnesota. We both ended up in Austin when self-quarantining measures started taking place and decided to isolate together. I’m feeling blessed to have this time with Joe and his dog, Freedom, but let’s get into Joe’s story: He grew up in Orange County, California, went to school at UNLV in Las Vegas, played football and got drafted in 2010 by the Atlanta Falcons. He’s lived out his childhood dream, spending 8 years in the NFL, but started to find his heart pulling him in a different direction. In this conversation with Joe, we get deep into the identity crisis that comes with career and life transitions, plant medicine, and inner work during isolation. Let’s dive in. - “You can feel when someone loves you. Welcome to another episode of In My Truth with Sarah Riegelhuth, the show where we have raw as f*ck conversations to sort through and understand the untruths we’re currently living in and the stories we’re currently telling ourselves. - Disclaimer: What we talk about on In My Truth tends to be very raw and can be triggering. Resources for support and help are included at the end of show notes - scroll down for more information. - In this episode of In My Truth, your host Sarah Riegelhuth is in Tulum for the Aubrey Marcus Fit For Service Fellowship Summit Two with her friend and fellow program participant Alex Nelson. Alex Nelson is in an interesting transition period of his life, having just finished his more traditional career in management for manufacturing and moving into the podcast and personal coaching space to work on trauma, literally the week of recording the podcast. In this episode, Alex and Sarah are discussing modalities for healing and making the journey back to our truth. In Alex’s work, he uses a number of different modalities for healing and working on their trauma, such as ecstatic dance, guided meditation, group therapy and psychedelics. The podcast In My Truth is another path to do that: identifying our own truth, and finding voice for it. How are you expressing your truth? How are you working through being afraid to show up as you are? The spectrum of truth is broad. In this episode, Sarah Riegelhuth and Alex Nelson examine Fear, specifically looking at the fear of starting a new business and striking out on our own. They also dive into the untruths and stories around: Judging and labelling ourselves Being a force for good Self-worth Intentionality and focus on interactions with others Getting internal and not being able to connect with others Self-reflection and self-judgement Our personal timelines versus the timelines the universe has for us Remember you’re not alone, and there is hope, even though it may not feel that way at times. Mets’ minor leagues. This week, Steve Sypa, Lukas Vlahos, and Ken Lavin discuss Josh Wolf and Matthew Allan- the Mets’ second and third selections in the 2019 MLB Draft- the unconventional strategy the Mets employed on day two, and selections that might fly under the radar, be they high schoolers, from the JuCO ranks, college juniors, or college seniors. After, Steve sits down with Amazin’ Avenue staff writer emeritus and Major League Baseball Rule 4 draft enthusiast Alex Nelson, who shares his expert opinion on how the Mets did. In this episode, hosts Alex Nelson and Shaun Soman reflect on Mitski’s April 3, 2019 performance at The Sylvee in Madison. Along the way, they recall past Mitski shows they’ve attended (1:34), rave about her chair-heavy new stage show (5:51), examine discourse around identity and music consumption (11:20), and formally analyze a few music videos from Be The Cowboy in an extended segment of “A.V. Club” (28:41). Oh, they also express grief over a missed opportunity to grab a very elusive Mitski matchbook and invite you to join them both in mourning (47:11).In lieu of a guest this week, Alex and Shaun want to highlight some groovy work about Mitski others have done! To read the rest of Amileah Sutliff’s Liner Notes interview with Mistki for Vinyl Me Please, please see “The Unquenchable Desperation of ‘Be The Cowboy’”; to know more about Mitski’s performance at the Sylvee on April 3, 2019, see Mercy Xiong’s review for EMMIE Magazine; finally, to peep the adorable fan art for Mitski’s “Pink In The Night” featured on this week’s mini “Queer Revolutions” segment and more, check out Eunnieboo on Twitter.
Record Store Dropouts is a music-adjacent podcast for music-adjacent people. On their quest for good conversation and trivial knowledge, hosts Shaun Soman and Alex Nelson explore how visual objects (e.g., album covers, music videos) are made and the extent to which they inform the listening experience. Having collectively worked at, erm, one different record store over three months, Shaun and Alex complement their "expertise" by inviting musicians, visual artists, and writers to discuss how music has influenced their work.On their first episode, Shaun and Alex reflect on Santigold's debut album (1:29) before Native Essence Art creator Natalie Ergas drops by to discuss her artistic process (16:09), what’s on her Western zodiac energy playlist (28:17), and how collage functions in Santigold’s discography (41:03).The podcast's theme music is "Communication" by a cool Madison band called Disq, which has also played the song at a venue and arts incubator called Communication, Tone Madison's physical home. Shaun and Alex understand "Communication" isn't about Communication, but they like to believe otherwise. Thanks again to Disq and Saddle Creek Records for the use of the song.If you happen to be in Madison the day this episode drops,—Friday, May 3—Ergas will be celebrating an art opening at Robinia Courtyard, 829 East Washington Ave.

2019 UVic Education Distinguished Alumni of the Year award winner Alex Nelson is recognized for his lifetime of achievements to change the world of sports and recreation for Indigenous peoples and for his work in suicide prevention. Nelson graduated from the University of Victoria Faculty of Education’s Recreation and Health program. Sports can provide youth with inspirations and role models. Inspired by his own life and his uncle, Nelson coaches, creates sports programming and believes in the ability of sport to foster personal skill and builds community. He helped create programs specifically for Indigenous youth. For Nelson, soccer was a chance to leave the school behind for a brief moment. He is a residential school survivor and discovered his love for soccer during his time in Alert Bay. “It is an opportunity and a time where you leave that institute, you leave that building, you leave that smell, the regimentation, the staff, and all that it stands for,” he says. “And now you have this freedom. You have the fresh air, you have nature, and you have the soccer ball.” Some of Nelson’s other work includes serving as Executive Director of Aboriginal Sports BC in 1997, and was involved in creating the North American Indigenous Games in Victoria. Nelson is also using what he’s learned in the sports world as a method of suicide prevention. Listen to this episode to learn more about Nelson’s story and how he uses sports to foster community and culture in new and innovative ways.

Jeffrey and Jarrett talk the Mets floundering offense, curious closer, recent draft with Alex Nelson of Amazin' Avenue, and then Jarrett talks about Japanese Pro Wrestling for the last twenty minutes until even Jeffrey completely checks out of the show.
In the "Mets need to get some of those Thai Tuna bucks" edition, we present a, uh, long podcast. Jeffrey and Greg start off by figuring out what we will be talking about on the pod. Next we consider what the Mets should do at the upcoming trade deadline and wonder why #MetsTwitter is so ready to trade Matt Harvey. After that we discuss the Steven Matz injury that Jeffrey just found out about. Then it is time for some All-Star Game talk, because that is a thing that is about to happen, and Jeffrey kind of wanted a Jeurys Familia all-star shirsey. And we can't skip Jeffrey's recent minors road trip, because Greg has some questions. That would be a pretty full show, but oh yeah, there's more. Alex Nelson comes on the show to recap the 2015 Mets draft and of course there are your e-mails. Finally we wrap things up with various soccer updates, both Swedish and second division.
