Ryan thinks there should be upper limit age restrictions to prevent old people losing their marbles. The boys talk about missionaries and why roasting LDS missionaries might be part of a larger plan. They then talk about church scams and boring services. Then they reminisce about door to door salesmen and losing money to Columbia House. Then Andy’s best friend sneaks a subscription to Playboy in order to get a keychain and gets busted by his parents. Then they talk about getting in massive trouble in school and the hell they put their parents through. Andrew falls down in front of his entire class wasted. O’Neill’s buddy tries to make “bathtub energy drinks” and a few of them go bad. Then they reminisce about the Jolt Cola days and soda brands testing out products on the student population. Ryan forces Andy to try Durian Ice cream live on the show and the results are hilarious. Andy and his family try weird Japanese chips and they do a deep dive on strange food flavors.
Today's guest is Tamara Keefe, founder and CEO of Clementine's Ice Cream, the St. Louis–based creamery known for its inventive flavors, ice cream parlors, and devoted following. Tamara started Clementine's after walking away from a successful corporate career, and has since grown the company from one tiny neighborhood ice cream parlor into a nationally recognized brand. Tamara joins host Kerry Diamond to talk about the childhood ice cream tradition that changed her life, why she decided to bet on herself, and how she built Clementine's from the ground up—first by selling to restaurants, delivering pints around St. Louis, and eventually opening her first parlor. She shares what makes Clementine's special, from its “organoleptic” parlor experience to its kosher-certified signature line, boozy ice creams, and dairy-free offerings. They also dive into Clementine's famous Gooey Butter Cake ice cream, Tamara's Route 66–inspired summer flavors, and why vanilla is the true test of a great ice cream maker. Plus, Tamara talks about Cone Con, her upcoming wedding, and why ice cream might just be the happiest food there is. Thank you to Fisher & Paykel & Nonino for supporting our show. Victoria Lai has lived several careers in one lifetime: presidential appointee at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, entrepreneur, and now business advisor and nonprofit COO. But her biggest pivot came when she nurtured her passion for making ice cream on nights and weekends while working a serious government job. In this extra sweet episode, Victoria walks us through how a $25 Craigslist ice cream maker and a promise to herself led to Ice Cream Jubilee, the award-winning DC-area business celebrated by Food & Wine, the Washington Post, and Thrillist, and what it felt like to eventually sell the business she'd spent nearly a decade building. She also opens up about her family's Chinese immigrant history and how it shaped both her flavors and her sense of purpose, and why she considers her latest pivot back to mission-driven work the most fitting chapter yet. What does it look like to have a world-class CMO in your corner without the full-time price tag? In this episode, Alloy founder Rick Mayo sits down with Erin Levzow, CMO at CapitalSpring, to talk about the real value of fractional marketing leadership. Erin has held CMO roles at Wingstop, Freebirds, Museum of Ice Cream, and Marcus Hotels, and now works across the full CapitalSpring portfolio to help franchise brands build stronger marketing systems and better internal teams. She and Rick dig into how she mentors marketers inside growing companies, why most franchisees make the mistake of betting everything on one marketing channel, and what the faucet-and-bucket analogy tells you about why your spend is or is not working. They also talk about the human connection at the core of the Alloy model and why that matters more than ever in an AI-driven world. If you are building a franchise brand or trying to get more out of your marketing team, this episode is worth your time. Listen in to learn what great franchise marketing leadership actually looks like. He'll also talk about Ryn's sustainable hospitality, and how there it's fueled by a crop to kitchen concept with Sun Painted Farm being just behind the restaurant.
