Less Stressed Life : Upleveling Life, Health & Happiness

INTRO:You've got to "GO" but can't! Nearly everyone experiences constipation at some point in their lives, with a recent survey showing that about 16 percent of Americans and a third of those older than 60 suffer from chronic constipation. It's the reason for millions of clinic visits each year and nearly just as many ER encounters. The number of people admitted to the hospital primarily for constipation has more than doubled since 1997.  Furthermore,  an astonishing 3 out of 5 people who suffer from constipation admit, they have never mentioned it to their Provider! On this episode, I will addresses constipation root causes and some suggestions to help promote regularity.KEY TAKEAWAYS:Bowel movements are a pillar of detoxificationWithout regular bowel movements you can experience a lot of discomfort, brain fog, fatigue, other issues. Constipation feels terrible: bloating, feeling full or distended after eating or even all the time, brain fog, fatigue, straining to go to the bathroom, trouble fully emptying or having complete BM's,  going less than 3 times a week, passing hard stone like or lumpy stools, in extreme cases, some even feel as though there's a blockage. There's many different causes of constipation:  diet, genetic predisposition, colonic motility, and absorption, as well as behavioral, biological, and pharmaceutical factors. Low fiber dietary intake, inadequate water intake, sedentary lifestyle, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), failure to respond to urge to defecate, and slow transit can also contribute. An unbalanced microbiome can also contribute to constipationImportant to look for root causes to address fully and prevent further issuesTHIS WEEK, I SHARED HELPFUL TIPS ON:Recommendations to improve constipation and promote regular BM'sHydration, fiber, movementLifestyle tips and support for ongoing regularityFinding a practitioner to help navigate your health concernsMENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2910654/#:~:text=These%20surveys%20have%20estimated%20that,all%20other%20chronic%20digestive%20conditions.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5976340/#:~:text=Overall%2C%20the%20average%20prevalence%20of,life%2C%20and%20healthcare%20resource%20consumption.WHERE TO FIND CHRISTA AND THE LESS STRESSED LIFE TEAM:Personalized functional medicine with Christa Biegler:http://www.lessstressednutrition.comBook a Call!https://www.christabiegler.com/workwithme?Less Stressed Life Podcast:http://www.lessstressedlife.comLess Stressed Life Facebook Page:https://www.fb.me/christabieglerrd/On IG:@anti.inflammatory.nutritionistShop our Favoriteschristabiegler.com/shop

Intro You know, something occurred to me recently – I have never really gone into much detail on this podcast about my own past struggles and journey toward food freedom and intuitive eating, and with my dog Theo, I am finally here to do that! I share my earliest memory of an interaction that I had with diet culture and how it affected me, what I was like in high school (such as how I was well known for eating a lot but was also very physically active), and how being in college was when I began to restrict food and eventually start binge eating. As I share with you in this episode, restricting food and losing weight in college was a coping mechanism for me because college was stressful and competitive. This was something that I could control and feel successful at. I may have been in college to become a registered dietician, but remember - dieticians are humans too and can just as easily fall prey to the beast that is diet culture as anyone else can. Not only that, but we can find ourselves just as isolated as anyone else, and that is exactly why I eventually started The SociEATy. If I can help it, I don't want anyone else to have to struggle alone like I initially did! I also review with you the five stages that I teach in The SociEATy – (1) ditching diet culture, (2) making peace with food, (3) learning to accept your body, (4) adding gentle nutrition to what you eat, and (5) finding food freedom for life (that last one being a constant process that doesn't come with a bumper sticker). I suggest listing your food rules in order of easiest to break to hardest to break because that will help you reach your goal one step at a time, making it a more digestible (see what I did there?) process. I finally offer you what I always make a habit of asking my guests to offer – three actionable tips that you can start to put into effect today: (1) do a social media detox, (2) find people who will support you, and (3) start rewiring your brain by using mantras and affirmations. As always, please be sure to subscribe to The SociEATy Podcast so that you never miss an episode, and leave me a review. I would also love to hear from you; screenshot the episode, and share it in your stories! (As I make you aware of at the very beginning of the episode, I will be discussing things in detail like the large quantities of food that I was regularly eating, and I totally understand that that kind of info can be triggering for some of you, especially if you haven't yet found food freedom, so please feel free to take a break and wait for the next episode if you're worried that this will be triggering for you.)   Time Stamps [0:00] – Colleen opens with a trigger warning, warning us that she will be talking about quantities of food that she has eaten which she doesn't want upsetting any listeners. [2:05] – Colleen shares her earliest memory of diet culture. [3:42] – We learn about what Colleen was like and what her relationship with food was like when she was in high school and how that transitioned into her college years. [4:35] – Colleen explains when she started to restrict food and track calories and how that spiraled out of control. [9:00] – We discover how Colleen's binge eating habit started her junior year of college. [12:04] – Colleen pinpoints the time of her life when she realized that something had to change and how she went through a trial and error process looking for a solution. [14:33] – Colleen begins to go through the five steps of making peace with food and enjoying it, beginning with ditching diet culture. [17:43] – Colleen moves into the second step - breaking food rules and neutralizing all food. [20:52] – Colleen describes the third stage of the process – learning how to respect and appreciate your body for what it is. [22:21] – Colleen identifies the fourth step as one of her favorites – applying gentle nutrition and finding the balance between food freedom and eating nutritiously. [23:20] – Colleen touches upon the fifth and final stage of the process – finding food freedom for life and trying to prevent food rules from returning. [26:10] – Colleen begins to bring the episode to closure by providing three actionable tips that can be put into action today.   Links and Resources Colleen Christensen Nutrition – Website The SociEATy – Website Colleen's Instagram Page The SociEATy's Instagram Page Colleen Christensen – "What to Expect When You Stop Dieting" Colleen Christensen – "How to Identify & Break Food Rules"

Content creation, automation of content, a bank of content to rely on, content tools, you get the idea, and hopefully by now you’ve realised that a whole bucket load of research and insight, segmentation, targeting and positioning, strategic thinking and tactical thought is required before we even get to think about any type of content. But when we do get to that stage, it’s always good to have a helping hand. Andy Lambert is one man that can help you. Not only is he one of the founding members of ContentCal (a content marketing platform that brings content marketing strategy, workflow and management together), but he is full of tips, actionable insights and a brain full of the latest social news. In this episode we cover; - What makes a good content strategy - Maximise your content and creative - Paid v organic - Where to get content ideas - Using stats to develop better content Watch the episode video: https://youtu.be/1eSqk6nNL-g Takeaways Top Tip Where to start is actually the top tip! And this is with good research. Good research into the content that is performing well in your field, search volumes, your customers persona and also influencers that are prominent within your space. Research these topics and your content foundations will be solid. Favourite Quote When discussing the paid v organic debate, Andy’s recent research discovered that ‘93% of Marketing Managers said they would be increasing their organic content output’ which highlights that doing good creative work that people want to consume is hugely important. You can’t ignore the paid, but valuable organic content is a must And Finally, the Most Important Takeaway from this Episode On the topic of paid v organic, Andy suggested a 70/30 split towards the organic, which makes perfect sense. Remember – top of the funnel think paid, bottom of the funnel think organic (hugely generic I know and this is debatable, but on one listens to the end of podcasts anyway)! You just can’t get that video recorded. If any of this sound familiar to you when you go to record your own videos, this week’s chat with Nick Diakanastasis is defo for you. Nick is a Public Speaking Coach and a Trained Actor who is going to help us conquer those pre-recording nerves about speaking on camera as well as some amazing tips on how to feel more comfortable and natural in front of the camera. Especially now we are all using online chat A LOT more! In this episode we cover; - What should we do before going on camera - Getting rid of those nerves - Tips on body language and vocals - The stupid (sorry main) things people are getting wrong. Watch the episode video: https://youtu.be/DE8Fll8DDT4 Takeaways - Did you know you were breathing incorrectly? Now you’re checking out how you breathe right? This should come from your stomach, not your nose or throat. Try using this technique before and during a recording and see if you notice a difference in how you are coming across on camera. - When you are pumped full of adrenaline everything is quicker, you speak quicker, you try to get to the finish quicker and your processing speed is quicker. Is this a good or a bad thing… well it can be both, but be cautious that this doesn't affect the conversations you are having or the answers you give to questions. Slow down, as what you feel might be a slower speed will look more natural and will probably be much closer to the natural you. - And finally, you need to give more than you think. Not for reciprocity, although you should be doing this anyway, but when on camera, always give more than you think. In fact, if you feel comfortable, you’re not giving enough – stretch yourself and give that little bit extra and move out of your comfort zone. Running Life: A Fitness Protection Production

Intro You’ve probably heard it said that “running is therapy.” Though we push back HARD against that idea, therapy is our therapy and nothing else comes close, we can see where this comes from.  We see our running buddies every Saturday and rarely socialize in between. Most of my running friends have never met my colleagues, my coworkers, my spouse or my friends outside the running community. They exist totally separately. I tell you that to tell you THIS:  conversations can get DEEP on long runs. The lack of connection to the rest of our lives means we can be more ourselves, speak more freely, talk more openly. It is a safe place to ask dangerous questions. What is said on a run, stays on a run...so we thought it would be fun to host some of these free, TMI conversations on the podcast, covering topics as well as details that wouldn’t be appropriate to share anywhere else. We are kicking off this series with one of our Sponsored Athletes, who also happens to be my running buddy, Kade, who is 9 months into his gender transition. It won’t take long to see why we’re friends- we are both loud, proud, and outspoken AF. When Kade posted about his new appendage arriving in the mail, my clients had QUESTIONS. Then, I realized I had questions, too; we hadn’t run together in awhile so we hadn’t yet a direct conversation about his transition. Kade, amazingly, agreed to have that conversation on our podcast. Come on now, you KNOW you’re curious! Get ready to be a fly on the wall for this amazing conversation where we learn everything I’ve ever wanted to know about Kade’s transition, questions I would only ever ask him on a run; which frankly is the only time and place for my totally ignorant and taboo questions, like, “do you ACTUALLY have a D^ck in a box?” and “is it like...a neuticle?”   Note: We want to be exceptionally clear: the purpose of this podcast isn’t shock value, but there will be a lot of talk about anatomy. We are not exploiting Kade to expand our audience, we are trying to draw our audience closer to one of our Sponsored Athletes.  All of the questions have been filtered by the team, and I’m proud to say nothing really needed to be edited, softened or changed. We have a really amazing community, and I’m proud that Kade is a part of it.  Questions from MK OH MY GOD YOU ARE GONNA HAVE A PEE PIPE! So, it’s hard to know where to start- because I still fumble when I try to talk about us in the past tense! Like, “you aren’t dead, but you’re kinda like Voldemort! I can’t say your old name!  When I slip, and we both know I do, does it hurt your feelings or make you not want to talk to me? So, is it like “deadnaming”? Can you give us a brief rundown on you, then tell us how would you describe yourself at the time we met? You’re the most confident human either of us have known, so this didn’t make sense to us, it really surprised us. To be clear: we love you and support you 100%, we just didn’t see this coming. Was it just us? Have others been surprised, or admitted they were surprised? Tell us a bit about your gender journey (is that how we describe it?) Because when we met, you struck me as SO sure of yourself. I realize the parts of you that I LOVE won’t be affected by the transition, how do you feel about the parts that ARE changing? Looking back, its hard to think that wasn’t 100% you, so how are you more you, now? So, once you realized it was time to transition, what does that look like? Is there an infographic, is it case by case? How did you decide where to start and what to do? Which surgeries do you NOT want to do and why? Which surgeries are the most important and why? Your transition has prompted some DEEP conversations with my therapist! I generally speaking don’t feel safe around white men! It took FOREVER to get there with my husband. I’m still working out how your pee-pipe will change our relationship….how do you think it will change us? How is it changing your other female friendships?  How is it changing your male friendships? What is your best day ever, has it come yet or when will it be? How can I, as your friend, I as the founder of a media company with a platform, and everyone listening, support you as well as the community? Questions from FPP Clients Did MK pressure you into this? Why did you say yes, did you feel like you could say no? How has FPP made you feel #coachedandloved? Has running helped through your transition? You post a LOT about your t-shots. How do those feel, and what’s the recovery like? (separate, similar question): my son has type1 diabetes and has to give himself injections, is this anything like that? Are you injecting into your muscles or do you have to find a vein and change location each time? can Kade recall any reactions to his transition that were well-intended, but hurt his feelings? Or can good intentions make up for a stumble? Kade we greatly appreciate your openness about your experiences.  It seems like people have a wide range of comfort levels with what they are willing to discuss.  How is the best way to determine what’s appropriate to talk about with people in our social circle who may be transitioning. I cannot wait to hear more from Kade! I think it's so important to hear other perspectives. My question is what are the phases of transition and what happens during each phase. I'm hoping to better understand the journey and the struggles at each phase (I'm assuming each phase has a different struggle but could be wrong!) And what I could do to help support someone who is struggling! Thank you Kade for being so open and honest for us A lot of emphasis is put in the media on labels and pronouns.  When we meet someone who we aren’t sure whether they are a male or female how is the best way to handle this respectfully if we are in a situation where typically a label or pronoun would be used. What’s the difference between gender fluid, gender non conforming, and transgendered?? How is this different from being a male or female who prefers things that might not be typical in the cultural archetype (I.e tomboy or boy who dances or does flag team?) How does Kade identify his sexuality currently and did this change when he began to transition. How does dating work as person who is transgendered.  Do you tell potential dates that you are transgendered before you have a date, on the first date, etc? Kade said his appendage came in the mail (I.e prosthetic penis), will it work??  I mentioned this upcoming podcast to my neighbors because to them there is nothing off limits in any conversation and I thought they would have some good questions...and they did! I know Kade is having his top surgery, but they were interested in learning more about bottom surgery if Kade can give more information on it.  Are you sure you want a penis as a runner?? I mean there jock rot and ball chafe, wearing cups, why would you want that mess? Given that you can’t change the underlying chromosomes that caused you to be born with female anatomy, do you think changing the outward appearance of your anatomy will clear your gender discomfort or do you think you will have feeling of discomfort even though you are living as a male? There seems to be some debate about whether health insurance should cover transition surgeries as a necessary medical procedure or if it is self covered as a cosmetic procedure.  Are your surgeries covered and could you speak to why or why not they should be covered.   Follow up - from my reading some people say that the procedures should be covered because the surgery will treat the extreme psychological discomfort that having the opposite sex parts causes to a person who is transgendered has.  How is this discomfort different or more valid that the extreme discomfort caused by a biological woman who wants breast implants because her AAA breast’s cause her to feel not like a woman or someone who has extreme discomfort of because of other body features, birth marks, etc? Does Kade have any advice for parents raising children in our very gendered society? 100% of the proceeds from our Pride line will benefit Project Semicolon, the organization that supported our Sponsored Athlete Kade Schuldt.

Loose lips sink ships is an American English idiom meaning "beware of unguarded talk". The phrase originated on propaganda posters during World War II.[3] The phrase was created by the War Advertising Council[4] and used on posters by the United States Office of War Information.[3] This type of poster was part of a general campaign of American propaganda during World War II to advise servicemen and other citizens to avoid careless talk that might undermine the war effort. There were many similar such slogans, but "Loose lips sink ships" remained in the American idiom for the remainder of the century and into the next, usually as an admonition to avoid careless talk in general. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loose_lips_sink_ships#cite_note-pp-3 Words are powerful. They can be use to destroy or they can be used to build up. You and I need our tongues to say words. The tongue is one of the smallest members of the human body. It can be the most powerful. James warns us in this passage that no one can tame our tongues except by the power of God. 1. Teachers, Beware of an Untamed Tongue v. 1 1. Teach the full counsel of God 2. Be edifying 3. Be encouraging 4. Don't engage or encourage gossip 5. A teacher's life should match what he/she teaches 6. A teacher ought to be a life long learner 1. Illust: "The secret of a governable tongue is not self-control, but Christ-control." G.S. 2. Congregation, Beware of an Untamed Tongue v. 3-12 1. Power to give direction v. 3-4 1. Direct towards the holiness and grace of the gospel 2. Direct towards 1 Timothy 3:18 2. Power to destroy  v. 5-8 1. Illust: "There is only one thing as difficult as unscrambling an egg, and that's unspreading a rumor." G.S. 1. Destroy a person's reputation 2. Destroy a family 3. Destroy a Bible study 4. Destroy the church 3. Only God can tame our tongues v. 9-12 1. Being informed by the Word 2. Being empowered by the Holy Spirit 3. Being motivated by the love of Jesus Christ 4. Only Christ can control our tongues Closing: Applications: gossip, bitterness. anger, revenge, jealously, etc. Gossip Rumor Innuendo Slander Intentional lies All motivated by power, pride, inferiority complex, spiritual and emotional immaturity, jealously, envy, your agenda being blocked...

This action-packed episode is brought to you by the performance marketing experts at Voy Media. https://voymedia.com/ Increase Average Order Value “How to increase your average order value” INTRO: You don’t always have to get more customers to increase revenue in e-commerce. If you increase the amount of money customers spend on average, you can also earn more money. 1) Raise Prices This one is obvious but people often overlook it. Try price testing with gradually different prices. Key words here being TEST and GRADUALLY. Higher prices don’t always deter people, it could imply higher value compared to the competitors. 2) Bundles Products that are frequently purchased together should be put in a bundle. Make the price slightly less than the sum of all products. The higher price might seem daunting, but not if these are products your shoppers are likely to buy together anyway. Since the products they’re buying anyway are grouped together in one bundle, it’s less browsing they have to do, which increases conversion rates. Bold Brain is a great app to help you decide what products should go together. 3) Upsells/Cross-Sells This is when someone either adds a product to their cart, or makes a purchase, and you offer them a discount on a similar product to get them to buy. Do them lower in the funnel. On the cart page, or post-purchase. This works because if someone has added an item to their cart, or even purchased an item, they are very far down your funnel and have shown extremely high purchase intent, so these shameless upsets are fine to do. Zipify’s OneClickUpsell is great for this, so is Bold Brain, Bold Upsell. BIG NOTE: this is not only suggested but REQUIRED on stores with heavy mobile traffic and many SKUs. Browsing a store with many SKUs can be hard on mobile. If you can smartly cross-sell items frequently bought together to mobile shoppers, that’s less time they need to browse and less pages they have to go through. This increases conversion rates on mobile. Mobile purchase behavior is also usually impulse buying. So mobile shoppers are more prone to impulse decisions like upsells and cross-sells. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/digitalmarketingfastlane/message

Brett Veinotte from School Sucks Project Steve Patterson – Tim throws down the gauntlet, which was quantum entangled so that it was really Joe throwing it down. “Speaking of shooting off your mouth… my speech.”   The Adra Lounge Speech Notes Overview What is public space? Ownership of land Divestiture of government property Ownership of public space Post-state cities What is Public Space? …and why should libertarians care about it? Space that is accessible to non-owners without invitation, with reasonable restrictions Access to Public Space …a sliding scale Public Space No permission for entry, no permission for occupancy (Public park) Permissible Public Space Minor permissions for entry and / or occupancy, i.e. Pay a fee (Movie theater) Permissible Private Space Major restrictions on entry and/or occupancy (Corporate building lobby) Private Space Invitation only (Private Home) Categories of Public Space Open Space Urban open space (plazas and parks) Natural areas (hiking trails, nature preserves, beaches, preserved farmland) Enclosed parks (theme parks, amusement parks, botanical gardens)  Buildings Social / Cultural facilities (museums, theaters, community centers, libraries, tourist attractions, sports arenas) Mercantile facilities (Farmers markets, malls, shops, restaurants) Transportation facilities (airports, train stations, bus stations)  Pathways Roads and rights-of-way Waterways (Rivers, lakes, oceans) Parking (Lots, garages, on-street spaces) Restrictions on Public Space …do not necessarily disqualify a space as “public” Administrative Restrictions: Fees for use (park fees, road tolls) Hours of use Occupancy capacity (egress, parking) Types of occupancy (camping, mercantile, assembly) Behavioral Restrictions: Disruptive / aggressive behavior / drinking Reckless driving Criminality Health and safety risks Why is public space important? Essential to human functioning Freedom of movement Marketplaces – Access to goods, services, and jobs Recreation, nature, history, and arts Social interaction, public discourse, protest, celebration Public Space Summary Space that is accessible to non-owners without invitation, with reasonable restrictions Many types of public space – Open Space, Buildings, Pathways Government owned and privately owned Degrees of access with permissions Many private facilities have public space components (i.e. Lobbies) Expectation of entry (if not occupancy) on most properties Restrictions on entry and occupancy Public space is essential to public life Ownership of Land Essential elements of ownership Reasonable freedom from adverse use inhibiting desired use Duration of desired use with minimal risk of seizure (i.e. lease term) Freedom to transfer ownership rights at will, in whole (sale) or in part (lease) Necessity of Land Ownership Private property ownership of land is essential to settlement and production. Any society that is not nomadic needs to allocate private property to farm the land and build homes, roads, and infrastructure, with minimal risk of seizure, eviction, and adverse use by others. Means of Enforcing Land Ownership Architectural Means Fences, Gates, Walls, Doors, Intrusion Alarms Legal Means Titles, Deeds, Trusts, Surveys, Liens, Homestead, Common Law / Custom Forceful Means Armed Security, Forceful Eviction, Booby Traps Is forceful eviction consistent with the non-aggression principle? …and the sign says anybody caught trespassing will be shot on sight So I jumped the fence and yelled to the house, Hey, what gives you the right? To put up a fence to keep me out, and keep mother nature in If God were here he’d tell it to your face, Man, you’re some kind of sinner Signs, by Five Man Electrical Band Is trespass without threat an act of aggression that justifies defensive force? No Has a trespasser consented to force being used against him? Maybe Does a right to forceful eviction depend on local laws and customs? Yes Is forceful eviction consistent with the non-aggression principle? The right to use force to exclude or evict people from a certain area of land is not an a priori “natural” right However, forceful eviction is necessary (with proportionality and due process) to avoid adverse use of many types of property, which is essential to settlement and production A right to forceful eviction is a valid legal construct in societies with broad consensus for property rights. Establishing a Right To Forceful Eviction Homesteading “Mix labor with the land” A nice idea, but impractical Takes time to “mix” labor with a large area of land Excludes potential for natural preservation Can justify an initial claim after the fact First Claim “I claim this chest in the name of Spain” Necessary, but insufficient Dennis Hope has claimed the Moon and sold off claims to others. Some combination of claim, survey, and declaration of intent for use may be sufficient to validate a claim (i.e. mining claims). But none of this matters… Seizure “All your base are belong to us” No existing land title has been established primarily by homesteading No future land titles (on Earth) will be created by homesteading All existing land titles have been created by governments who have claimed unused land or seized occupied land. Are all existing land titles invalid? NO Land claims are relative. Whoever has the earliest provable claim to land has the best claim (Stephan Kinsella) Privately-owned land has been “removed” from the governments who seized it. Is “Public Property” invalid? There is no public property. “Public Property” is private property that happens to be owned by a government. The Owner (government) sets rules for access, fees, and allowable uses, no different than private property owners. Some government-owned property is public space, and some is not. Like private property, government-owned land titles may be valid if there are no better competing claims The problem is the ongoing ownership by a government taxing and initiating force. The government needs to go away, not the land titles. Divestiture of Government Property Why Divest Government Property? Property ownership forms part of the basis for the state’s power and perceived legitimacy. Government-owned roads, parks, beaches, etc. are amenities that entice people to support government and taxation. Bread and circuses. Less justification for eminent domain. Government doesn’t need to take land to build roads if it doesn’t build roads. Governments collect taxes to build infrastructure, spend taxes blowing up infrastructure in other countries. Private landownership is the basis for a voluntary society governed by rules of private landowners. Levels of authority: Landowners’ rules, deed restrictions, social standards, universal morals (NAP) Municipal police exist largely in part to patrol municipal property. Private security becomes much more viable and logical without government property. Property divestiture to public forms of ownership (i.e. voucher privatization) could be a windfall endowment to the poor. How should government property be divested? Abandonment (to be re-homesteaded) Only valid for unused land Restitution to taxpayers (Hoppe) What’s so special about taxpayers? What about government’s other victims? Arbitrary allocation Politically impossible – giving more property to the rich Seizure by revolutionaries In the absence of a valid competing land claim, forceful taking would create an invalid title. Subject to invalidation in future.Revolutionary overthrow of government would just create another governmental owner. Transfer from government to government, not divestiture. Spin off government departments as private organizations Highway Department becomes Highway Association / Highway Corporation Risk of monopoly Risk of bankruptcy Who owns the spin-off? “Opt-in” Trusts Anyone, anywhere can opt-in to create a share Preferred shares for people who invest money in improvements Profits or other benefits for preferred shares Normal shares can vote but can’t receive profits (Safeguard against losing public use to wealthy cabal) Preserving Access Rights to Public Space The purchaser draws boundaries, fences himself in, and says, ‘This is mine; each one by himself, each one for himself.’ Here, then, is a piece of land upon which, henceforth, no one has right to step, save the proprietor and his friends; which can benefit nobody, save the proprietor and his servants. “Let these multiply, and soon the people … will have nowhere to rest, no place of shelter, no ground to till. They will die of hunger at the proprietor’s door, on the edge of that property which was their birth-right; and the proprietor, watching them die, will exclaim, ‘So perish idlers and vagrants.’” – Pierre-Joseph Proudhon Existing public use of government-owned roads, parks, plazas, etc. has been “homesteaded” Divestiture of public space to private entities should not allow them to restrict access Reasonable access restrictions, consistent with existing restrictions Traffic laws Fees for use Hours of operation Behavioral / safety restrictions Means of Enforcing Public Access Public Ownership Opt-in Trust – Public can join as owners and vote shares to maintain public access Public access could be removed with broad consensus Trust Ownership Declaration of Trust could define purpose of land ownership trust as preserving public space. Limit powers of trust to remove land from public access Deed Covenants Before divesting, governments could establish deed covenants and easements that define public access rights, responsibilities, and restrictions Summary of Private Ownership of Public Space Existing land titles not in dispute should be respected Government property should be divested to private ownership Public forms of private ownership (i.e. Opt-in Trusts) may be most viable Public access to existing government property should be preserved by legal right Post-State Cities Public space freed from the tragedy of the commons Private ownership can bring market efficiency, value discovery, and accountability to public space Enhancement of green spaces and urban plazas Reduction of road congestion and traffic accidents Provision of appropriate parking Efficacy of mass transit Mitigation of unsustainable sprawl With or without a state, the thoughtful divestiture of state property to private owners could enrich our cities and towns with a flourishing of public space. We also chat about how Sarah uses her blog and her social media consulting concurrently. We're in the middle of our Philadelphia bloggers series. You like the side of that, Sarah, don't you? Yeah, right with me is Sarah DeGeorge of the Socially Dedicated blog. How’d I do? Sarah DeGeorge: Good. Great. Made it sound better than I ever do. So that's what counts. Anthony Verna: Wonderful. Wonderful. Once again, the Law and Business podcast is brought to you by Verna Law, focusing on intellectual property and advertising law. You already heard that in the introduction. So, Sarah, let's start here. Tell us about your blog and what you do. Sarah DeGeorge: So my blog is kind of an extension of my career, so I freelance and socially dedicated. It came from both my initials are SD and I do social media marketing. Anthony Verna: That’s very handy. Sarah DeGeorge: Yeah, I know, right? There was, there was a plan to incorporate a logo when I finally put it together and have my signature being the SD part of the logo. But that's a completely different story. But anyways, my freelancing is like I said, then carried over to my blog because I wanted to be able to kind of talk about it, and a lot of people that are bloggers tend to, and, I see a lot of them, they are freelancing on the side more so with content creation because of their writing and everything like that. So, it was kind of like a three-sided venture because it's it's a portfolio page, it's a blog itself, , I put it as like a business front too. So, it shows the services that I do alongside the information that I put out with the blog. So that's kind of how I positioned the website itself. Whole package kind of. Anthony Verna: Yeah, I understand. I understand that completely. So, when I look at your blog, I see topics like best business practice of being yourself, freelance truly isn't free, staying on top of client's money habits. Are these topics that you draw from your experiences in work? Sarah DeGeorge: Yeah, I'd say so. Sometimes something might happen and instead of me being grumpy and spiteful and being all you know, write a blog to inform others about the situation and how to do it in a way where you have your freelancing career and your reputation behind you and it's good, everything like that. Like sometimes it is inspired by my own personal experiences in a way that I can almost, it's a teachable lesson. Oh, unfortunately I have to go through said lesson, but I'd like to help other people not have to go through it. Yeah, Basically I think most of it is kind of like personal experience. Some of it is just I see something, or something sparks my interest. Maybe nothing happened personally to me, but I'm like, hmm. Like that's something we should talk about. And I tried to put my own spin on it. I'm still young so I'm, I'd like to say I'm kind of in like that mid-level part right now. I'm no longer, I

You are the founder of PHL Bloggers and you have a blog of your own. Chrystina Cappello:I do.Anthony Verna:And you have a full-time job.Chrystina Cappello: That as well.Anthony Verna:So the first question is, is do you sleep? Chrystina Cappello:Sometimes. Less than usual this week. I try. It's definitely always a balance trying to figure out what means the most, what's the most important to get done, and which things inevitably get shoved to the wayside along the way. Anthony Verna:I understand very well with having the practice, doing this podcast, having the blog guests. No, there are things that you certainly have to prioritize as you're putting all of this together. So, let's start here. Let's talk about the blog first. So, tell everybody about your blog. Chrystina Cappello: Sure. So, I blog at Chrystina Noel and that's just Chrystinanoel.com. It's about hosting parties, handmade greeting cards, and how to stay in touch with people you love. So, I've been blogging for six years now and I started the blog at the same time that I started my full-time job. So, essentially, I started it because my day job is a construction consultant and my background is in architectural engineering. So, I've a very left brained day job and that is the space that I live in during the day. And I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to go crazy having only that to do after graduating college with having so many activities going on at the same time. And so, I decided to start the blog at the same time. so I had a place to record my, my more right brained antics while living the left brain day job. Anthony Verna:It is a very artistic, lifestyle kind of blog. Would you agree with that? Chrystina Cappello:Yes, that definitely. For years it actually was very specifically by very specifically, I mean vaguely lifestyle and I realized recently that it actually for the first four or five years of it, it became sort of like a journal, a place for me to record all of my thoughts and sort of in more recent years I've been really making the pushover to talking just mostly about parties and greeting cards and staying in touch, which was always there along the way. But now it's just more of the focus as opposed to telling people about 10 things that I did this week or something along those lines. Anthony Verna: Right. Like your most recent post is about Thai inspired food for the dinner party,

Interview w/ Tim Ballard & Mark Mabry Tim: The guy’s name was Marble. Mark: Marble the child molester. Tim: His name was Marble, and he looked like a marble. El Centro childporn... Mark: Child Fugitive Caught in Calexico? 'Child Pornography Fugitive Caught in Calexico Port' Tim: No. Mark:  Imperial Valley Press. 'A man suspected of having child pornography was arrested in Calexico, El Centro, indicted in child sex crime'. Tim: Is his name Marble? Mark: Man, Imperial... "An Imperial man was arrested on suspicion of possession of child pornography on Tuesday, after authorities allegedly found child pornography on his computer. Homeland Security investigators, special agents began investigating local internet activity about child pornography."   Intro: You are listening to Slave Stealer. "It is a world that I know I understand better than most people, but you don’t even know how real and how huge it is. There are laws put in place to protect kids, and one of the laws, surprise, surprise, is you can’t sell them. If you guys are traffickers, you’d come in just like this. This is what happens. This is the core of the problem."   Tim: Welcome to Slave Stealer podcast. I am here shouting too loud for... Mark: You broke the mike! Tim: ...with co-host Mark Mabry, but we welcome you, and this is our kind of Throwback Thursday version We’re just going to talk about couple of interesting things that we think you should know about.    Mark: One in particular... People ask, "Do you do domestic work?" "Is everything overseas?" So, I want a domestic Throwback Thursday. Tim: Yeah, we... See, it’s interesting. We... I say about half our, half our case load right now is domestic, but the domestic cases are the ones we cannot readily talk about because they are generally more sensitive, because they require more... They require a different set of tools, they are law enforcement sensitive - a lot of software, a lot of techniques that require us to go online and do things that we can’t reveal to the public because there are countermeasures that the bad guys could utilize if they knew what we were doing. So...  Mark: Like what? Tim: Well, let me...let me just tell you and ruin every case we have pending! So yeah, we do a ton of domestic work, but because of the nature of it, we don’t get to talk too much about it. We let our law enforcement partners talk about it. They come out with a press release, and then we just point our donors to it. And they are usually kind enough to mention us in it, and we leave it at that.   Mark: Yeah. What do you find... Before we jump into that, give me like kind of a glossary of key elements for this story that...a few little background tidbits that will help us understand things that you are going to say in the story. Are there any like technical things we need to understand? Tim: No, I mean, you should just know that things like child pornography and acquiring children, in the United States in particular, are readily available on the internet - mostly in the dark web. These are the places that Google is not going to reach.    Mark: You mean Google does not reach everything? Tim: Google does not reach everything. There are many parts of the internet that are impossible for Google to reach, and these are the places where the pedophiles flock to. They network, they trade in child pornography, they negotiate child sex deals, and we are way behind in terms of our response to this. And so - when I say we,  I mean the nation, law enforcement in general - and so we are working to better the solution to that problem - building software, working with some of the most advanced technology companies on the planet, working with the top U.S. officials in this area. And we are building tools that will allow law enforcement to go into these dark places and root out these bad guys.    Mark: Are there...on the market right now - or not on the market, in the space right now - there are software solutions that are good. What are some of the good guys out there with great software that are busting... Is Thorn? Tim: Oh, absolutely yeah! So Thorn, which is Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore's foundation - they have internet computer gurus/engineers who are constantly in a think tank developing software. They have developed tools, for example - and they have been open about this - tools that allow law enforcement to identify when a child is actually soliciting himself or herself. And the reason... And it has to do with how they are writing the post. Now, the posts look like they are coming from some pimp, but the pimp takes the kid and forces them to write their own advertisement on Backpage or Craigslist, or different social media networks - Facebook. And so it looks like it is coming from an adult.   Mark: Or a kid. Looks like it is coming from an adult, but it’s a kid. Tim: They are trying to make it look like it is coming from an adult, or that a pimp is negotiating the deal, when in fact the child himself or herself is writing it. Mark: Under duress. Tim: Under duress. And so the software actually has...looks for key identifiers that would indicate that it’s a child.   Mark: Voiceprint things. Tim: And then they would...yes, and verbage and different things. And then that would allow law enforcement to go solicit that individual in their current capacity to pull them out and find them. So that’s some software that Thorn is involved in building.    Mark: That’s cool! Way to go Demi and Ashton Kutcher - on the good guy list. Tim: Good guy list. Mark: Ok, that’s... Let’s storm straight into the story that I’d like you to tell today. It happened in Imperial Valley. Talk to me. Tim: So it was, again it was... We identified somebody through means I can’t reveal, but it was somebody who was dealing in the dark net. Mark: Now, we were there doing some training. Can you reveal that? Tim: Yeah. I mean that’s how...that’s how it started. We were training... Mark: Yeah, walk me through the whole story. Tim: We went down to Imperial County and we trained law enforcement - several agencies - on how to go on the dark net and find people who are trading in child pornography. And during the training, we found this manual, this 'how to' manual. And it was multiple pages - I want to say somewhere between 40 and 50 pages long. Mark: How to what? Tim: Well, I am getting to that, ok. It’s 'how to'... Mark: Oh, you are saving that? Tim: I am saving that, yeah, the punchline. Mark: Awesome. Stay tuned. Tim: ...how to court and ultimately rape a child. That’s what the manual was. And it said things like - and this is something that had been traded amongst many pedophiles... Mark: So this manual has a title on it in pretty script that says, 'How to court and rape a child'? Tim: I don’t...I can’t tell you that that is the exact language, but that is what the manual was. And it talks about everything from how do you find a child - "well, find a niece or nephew that has friends and invite them over," like starting there. And then from there, these are the kind of gifts you can give them, here's the kind of things you can say to them so they trust you...and then it takes you down this whole dark horrific path to the point where you are controlling this child completely and abusing them sexually. Mark: So you had... You found this manual in the training on the dark web. Tim: On the dark web, being traded by someone who was in Imperial County. And then following up... And again, I can’t get into details of how we did this, but following up, we were able to - in an undercover capacity - able to ascertain the same person also possessed quite a bit of child pornography: child rape videos and images. Mark: And then what? Tim: And then, after that, we decided that this training should end with the search warrant for this individual’s home being at least mostly written. And that’s what we did. And so we were able to do the training, come back a week or so later after they got the paperwork in place, judge signed the warrant, and we were able to accompany the Imperial County sheriff’s office as they raided the home of this individual and seized his computer and talk to him. Mark: Are you allowed to say his name? Tim: Sure, yeah! He’s been convicted, it’s open, it’s public - his name is, his last name is Marble. Mark: That is such a creepy pedophile name. Tim: Why? Mark: Marble. I don’t know, that’s like a movie character name. Tim: Yeah. Mark: "Mr. Marble, we’d like to have a look around." So, were there any big or little surprises at the house? Tim: So, yeah, a couple funny things... As law enforcement breached the door, he instantly said - we didn’t tell him why we were there - the minute the door was breached, he said, "Other people have been using my computer too!" "Well, we didn’t say we were here for your computer," you know, "I’m not the only one, who uses it!" So it was obvious - he ended up confessing everything. And it was... Some of these cases get depressing, you know. You want to hate these guys completely because of what they are doing and the threat they pose. He actually told one of the sheriff deputies: "It’s a good thing you caught me," because, he said, he was in the process of being a foster parent to a 7-year-old girl. And he said, "If I got that little girl, I was going to rape her. That’s why I was doing it. So it is a good thing you caught me." And a lot of these guys, from my experience, do say that. They admit that they are monsters. And they don’t like that they are in this place. And some are almost relieved to get caught and be put away before they can really hurt somebody. I mean, it’s like they’ve lost control of their lives - they are so addicted to this horrific desire and passion and everything else. And so this guy in the interrogation, the thing that made it kind of sad... And we have video of him, we can probably put at least part of the video up on the website - he started talking about his life and how he was sexually abused as a child. You know, we talk a lot about how people can become addicted to child pornography because they start looking at pornography and that changes their brain - it basically creates brain damage, shrinkage in the brain, because of the overstimulation of the frontal lobes of the brain because that’s what people are going for, right, trying to get this chemical reaction and they overuse it and they overrun it and that ruins their life. It hurts their opportunity to have a normal, healthy, romantic relationship, you know, because their brain is now demented, and porn is the only thing that they recognize as fulfilling that need. It’s really sad. That’s a choice people make, like drugs. And it takes them to a dark place where they end up in jail. And all the guys - everyone who is a pedophile abusing children - are a threat to children and need to go to jail. But this case was a little bit different, and we see this often too. When you are abused as a child and that becomes your first sexual experience... And I’ve talked to so many psychologists to try to understand these guys - these guys that we're investigating, interrogating. And they said it is absolutely true: when your first sexual experience as a child or a teenager, whatever that experience is, that becomes what your brain, as it’s still forming... It’s still, really physically hasn’t formed completely and so it’s still taking ideas and concepts and ingraining them into your person. And so sex becomes, to these kids who are being molested, can become a relationship that is defined by an adult and a child. And that’s what their brain recognizes as sex. So when they get older, and they start developing their sexuality, what they know to be that sexuality is relationships, sexual relationships, between an adult and a child. So they then become the offender.    Mark: Now, to be clear, not every child that was molested grows up to become an offender... Tim: Absolutely. Mark: ...or has that predisposition. Tim: Absolutely. That’s not... Yeah, it’s not every...it’s certainly not every person who is abused, but it happens quite a bit. Mark: It’s a factor in a lot of people we catch. Tim: It’s a factor, and in the case of this man, that’s what he was telling us - that he had been abused. And I mean, you listen to the interrogation and it makes you sad. You know he needs to go to jail because he is a threat. He admits himself he needs to go to jail and he’s a threat. But when you hear his story, you realize how tragic this whole thing is. It’s so cyclical.   Mark: Is there a more... And I love to hear you say that and it breaks my heart too, because there’s...seems like it’s really easy, and we do it frequently. Some of the bad guys, like Fuego and these guys that we bust that are selling kids - they are horrible monsters. And then there are guys like Marble who...there’s a high degree of sympathy where you're like, "Man, I’m just sad for your ruined, shattered life that started out ruined and shattered and you were left to try to pick up the pieces." Like, how do you go about your job sympathetically or empathetically? You know what I am saying?   Tim: You just carry that sadness with you, but you don’t regret for one second putting the guy behind bars. Mark: Yeah. Tim: Because there’s nothing more important than children and their safety and the preservation of their innocence. So they have to go to jail. And you just look at them and you are sympathetic to their plight, and you hope that they can have redemption and they can somehow be healed from their brain damage.   Mark: You know, it’s interesting. Our intro music on the Slave Stealer podcast is - you know the intro sequence where you are talking about, "They look like you, and this guy and that guy" - that actually took place in an interrogation room in Haiti. And you can see it on "The Abolitionists", the documentary that is coming out on April 8th, that you are actually lecturing me. It was our very first op that I accompanied you on and we busted those two ladies who were selling kids, and I said to you, "Man, I’m a little torn up here." Do you remember that?    Tim: Yeah, absolutely! Mark: And you went off and you were like, "Listen, this is hard," and you essentially said the same thing. But I understand it now with a little more time under my belt.   Tim: Yeah. Look, you never... And it’s, it was a shocking thing for me when I started doing these cases - and this is outside even child cases, drug cases, any kind of case. There is an element of human sadness when you are taking someone from their family - even as bad as they are, there are people that love them and can’t believe they made these decisions. And you are the guy taking them away in handcuffs and putting them in jail for a long time. And you can’t help but feel an element of human sympathy, you know. And you don’t know what decisions led, you know, what things happened to this person that led them to make these decisions. But that doesn’t mean for a second that you don’t wish they were in jail. Mark: Yeah. Tim: You know they need to go to jail, but it’s rarely this total victorious, just, "Yeah, we did this!" You know, it’s... There can be some of that, but the whole thing is sad. The whole thing is tragic. It is tragic for everybody involved, especially for the victims, especially for the children, the parents. But also, in some ways, for the bad guys... Mark: Yeah. Tim: But it doesn’t mean you stop doing it. Mark: I think that’s a great little Throwback Thursday moment. Sign us off, man. Tim: Thanks for tuning in, and we will see you next time on Slave Stealer podcast.

I am excited to be talking to Valerie Clark today, she has a long history of working in the financial field as the owner of several start-ups. Most recently she is an investment professional with Sadler Financial Group based in Plymouth, Massachusetts. In addition to this, she is the President of the Greater Boston Business Council, which is Boston's LGBT Chamber of Commerce. Val, I have given the listeners a brief overview of who you are, but why don't you tell us a little bit more about yourself and your business, and what your path looked like that led you to where you are today. Valerie Clark: Sure. You know I think like a lot of people, my path was not- definitely not one that was straight or well-defined. I kind of stumbled into my profession. I'd thought that I would be a teacher when I was in college, and I have a degree in history and modern languages. Then I found out how much teachers actually make, versus how much money I owed the government for my degree. And I decided that you know, I simply- I couldn't, as passionate as I was about the opportunity, I just couldn't live on $25,000 a year. So I had been in the restaurant business probably since I was about fourteen, and one day was actually in a restaurant waiting on tables when I was recruited right off the floor. Jenn T Grace: Wow. Valerie Clark: Yeah. So it was- totally took me by surprise but literally inside of a month, you know I had my securities licenses and I was sitting behind the desk ready to do all sorts of damage. And you know, it's sort of the cliché within the financial services profession is that these kids when they recruit them, they're just so full of energy and ready to go, but the truth of the matter is they just don't even know what they don't know. Jenn T Grace: Yeah, absolutely. Valerie Clark: So I, you know I was with a major bank at the time and had a successful career from let's say- I want to say early 2000 on until 2006 when I left sort of pre-crazy housing market bubbl...

In addition to many of her accomplishments, she is especially proud of her estate planning, family and small business legal practice within the LGBT community. Also, her name appears in the Connecticut Supreme Court's ground-breaking decision on marriage equality which was Kerrigan versus the Commissioner of Public Health. Meghan, I have given the listeners a brief overview of who you are, but why don't you tell us a little bit more about yourself and your business, and what your path looked like that led you to where you are today. Meghan Freed: Sure, hi Jenn. First of all thank you so much for having me; I love your podcast, and I love your website, and I love your Facebook page. So I'm thrilled to be a part of it. Jenn T Grace: Thank you. Meghan Freed: I went to law school back in 2000, and after I graduated I went to a firm here in Hartford, Connecticut, Shipman & Goodwin, and then I worked at a much larger international firm called Bingham McCutchen. And then after that I was in-house council for a number of years at a wonderful company, Hartford Steam Boiler. At a certain point in my career I wasn't sure what to do next. And practicing law has been really a wonderful thing for me but I was ready to sort of take a new path, and work more with individual folks than with the companies I had been working for as clients prior. So I started talking about the concept of beginning my own law firm and a friend of mine from law school, Ryan McKeen, was sort of at the same place and came to me with the idea of forming a firm together. And my initial thought was, 'Ugh, wouldn't that be nice? I would really love to do this. But I also have this wonderful biweekly paycheck, and I love the people I work with, and I love the work I do. Am I really ready to take this risk?' I was sitting on a plane one day with my partner Kristen Marcroft, and we were talking about how I wish I could go into practice for myself and she at the time was looking at graduating from law school herself in a few months. And so she said, 'Well really why not? What is the risk?' And we went through everything and thought about our lives and our finances...

If you like what you hear in this interview, please be sure to tell a friend. And now, without further ado, let's dive into the interview. I am delighted to be talking with Liz Cooper today, who is the manager of Corporate Programs for the Workplace Project at the Human Rights Campaign. She is the go-to gal for all things regarding the Corporate Equality Index which does come up a great deal on this podcast. So Liz, I've given the listeners just a really high-level highlight of your most recent work, but why don't you tell the audience a little bit more about yourself and what your path looked like that led you to where you are today. Liz Cooper: Absolutely, so thanks so much for having me. I'm Liz Cooper as Jenn mentioned, manager at Corporate Programs at the Human Rights Campaign. I've been here just about three years now and so for folks who are not familiar with the Human Rights Campaign, we're the organization that goes along the blue and yellow equal sign. We're the largest civil rights organization working for LGBT equality in the US and I've been with HRC just about three years. And the project that I work on, the Workplace Project, deals with how companies are ensuring the safety, inclusive policies, benefits, protections for their LGBT employees. And as Jenn mentioned, the main mechanism that we measure and evaluate, the status of LGBT equality in the workplace, is through the Corporate Equality Index. So the CEI has been around for over ten years now, and it was really- and not to be too corny but an honor to inherit such a well-established and respected project when I came along on board with the team. So the CEI is a very objective measure of LGBT equality in the workplace. It doesn't account for employee surveys or their perception of their own personal experience with the company. It really is, 'Do you have these inclusive policies in place or do you not? Do you have these benefits for your LGBT employees or do you not?' So it's a really great objective measure and while it's also reporting out on the status of LGBT equality in these major US employers, our main focus is for those employers with 500 or more full-time employees; so we're talking about the big guys. But it's not just a report out, it's also a roadmap for folks who might now be scoring that well, might not have the most inclusive policies on the books. But we're here to help folks get there. We don't want to shame companies or make them feel bad about not being the best they can be,

I am excited to be talking with Jill Nelson today, founder of the INUS Group which works with individuals, teams and organizations to create powerful lives and dynamic relationships. She is also a community leader actively working towards LGBT equality issues through business, marriage equality and youth issues. She also spent over a decade as an ordained minister serving congregations in three different states. Jill, I have given the listeners a brief overview of who you are but why don't you tell us a little bit more about your business and what your path looked like that led you to where you are today. Jill Nelson: Well I'd love to do that Jenn. I have what many might consider a very convoluted path. I started out many, many, many, many years ago- I'm not even going to elaborate how long ago because then you'd know how old I am. But my undergraduate degree was in Accounting, I started out with, and it didn't take me long to realize I really didn't enjoy Accounting and switched to business management. And over the course of the next fifteen or twenty years, I got an opportunity to really experience retail management, business consulting, working several different industries. Eventually reached the point where I felt as though business work was two dimensional. I didn't feel as though I was really doing everything I wanted to make the world a better place, and that kind of led me into the ministry. I spent, you know as you noted in my introduction, a good ten or twelve years working with congregations wanting to help people really in touch with their whole life experience, not just their work experience. And help people then realize their full potential. But after twelve years in ministry I discovered that I missed business. I missed creating things. There were pieces of ministry that just didn't resonate well for me, and I met someone who was a couple's coach. Met them through a church group that I was co-facilitating for couples. And I discovered the world of coaching. And that opened up just an amazing,

Danie Fineman: Well thanks Jenn for having me, this is a nice surprise to be asked to be doing something like this. You know I tend to have the world view that I'm just a tiny, tiny person in such a large world. So for you to ask me to do something like this is really quite an honor, so thank you first and foremost for that. Jenn T Grace: You are very welcome. Danie Fineman: You know I need a little shot to my self-esteem every now and then so this is great. Jenn T Grace: Absolutely. Danie Fineman: So I'll just start from the beginning. I do like to tell people that I sort of came from a suburban neighborhood with a large Italian family, and did the typical things growing up; playing on soccer teams, and had a very typical childhood. But I grew up in a family where you know, resources were stretched a bit, so when it came time for me and my four siblings to go off and do our own individual adult things as children do go to college, get jobs and move out of the house, I was sort of left with the decision of do I not go to college because my parents really can't afford it because they already sent somebody before me who has sort of drained the bank accounts? Or do I take sort of matters into my own hands and I was being offered a scholarship to a very, very small school in Pennsylvania to play softball for them. And as all good lesbians, we all play softball, so I actually toyed with the idea. And so I actually ended up taking matters into my own hands and as a very independent eighteen year old, met with a recruiter and decided to join the US Army; without my parents' permission and without even their knowledge. And I don't regret it one bit, it was actually a very freeing and liberating decision, and I got to grow up in the military. I spent sort of my formative years in the military, and I feel like that's sort of where I grew up,

Matt, I have given the listeners a brief overview of who you are, but why don't you tell us a little bit more about your business and what your path looked like that led you to where you are today? Matt Luginbuhl: Thanks very much Jenn, thanks for having me. So I work you know in a Fortune 500 healthcare benefits provider, and we're really focused on empowering people to live healthier lives. During this time of healthcare reform, we really are at a pivotal moment in terms of how healthcare is affecting all of us, how we're all paying for healthcare, and how we're creating innovative solutions to solve the economic problems that are stemming from healthcare. Specifically at Aetna I work in the office of diversity and inclusion, and we're really focused on creating a diverse and inclusive work environment at Aetna. That's important both so that we are able to better understand our customers, it's really important that we look like our customers, that we have the perspectives of our customers, that we have the experiences of our customers. And it's also important that internally we have diversity in our workforce so that as we are creating those innovative ideas we have- or innovative solutions rather, we have the diverse perspectives at the table to make sure that we are creating a diverse solution. So I actually studied Industrial Organizational Psychology at Quinnipiac, the university as well as classical voice. How I got here, you know I worked at Aetna and through school I worked actually on the healthcare side of the business working with our members, and helping them manage their chronic conditions as they worked with nurses here on the telephone. And having studied Industrial Organizational Psychology, which really is the psychology of the workplace, a lot more related to HR, diversity had certainly come up and I had been involved with our Employee Resource Groups here at Aetna.

Yeah, so wow where to start. Well this is really great timing because I recently launched my new company, Richard Oceguera Coaching, as you mentioned, and it's exciting for me because it's an opportunity to bring together 29 years of experience in sales, marketing, business development and personal development, and really translate that to the clients that I'm working with. And it's really wonderful to have the opportunity to take this experience and have it make a difference for other people as they're building out their businesses. So that's a little bit about what I'm doing now. But you asked about the path that led me to where I'm at today, and I think that's a very interesting question. And you know my path has not been clear cut. I've done many different things over the years and certainly if I mapped it out it would be quite a zigzag of different experiences.

Tony Ferraiolo: Absolutely. But first, thanks for having me on the show. Jenn T Grace: You are welcome. Tony Ferraiolo: It's great to be here. So this is what really happened to me. I'm transgender and I just turned 50, so back in the early 70s when I was a teenager, or actually an adolescent and I was growing up knowing that something was different about me, I didn't have any support from anyone. And that led me down a really dark path; it led me down a path of suicidal thought, it led me down a path of self-harming. It led me down the path of drug use and alcohol use. And when I realized at a very late age, like 41 years old that I was transgender, it was a celebration for about I would have to say a day and a half and then I got really, really scared. And I went down to a beach, a local beach, and I sat there with every intention to end my life. I could not imagine being transgender and having people support me and having people love me and having friends. I didn't know anybody who was transgender at that time. But something happened to me in the moment that I was crying and ready to end my life, that something inside of me said, 'Stop. Wait a minute. You have all the power to create yourself.' And I shifted instantly. Like I took my power back. And I started going down the path of transition for me, and I always say 'for me' because this is my story and everybody's transition is different. But my transition started off really trying to work on not being angry anymore and being able to face life with a positive thought, not a negative thought. And to do that I had to let go of a lot of the anger that I held for people who were abusive to me in the past. So I did that,

I'm here in Washington D.C. at the headquarters of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, and I just moved to D.C. and joined the team here internally almost two years ago. But I've actually been with the NGLCC since really the very beginning. You know the organization just celebrated our tenth anniversary, and I was part of the earliest days when our co-founders created the NGLCC and came to one of the earliest conferences as a volunteer board member for a local chamber, Quorum, that you mentioned in the beginning. And you know I was quite taken with this whole concept of business equality as a movement and intentional inclusion of LGBT-owned businesses in the economy and the network of other LGBT chambers around the country. And also the corporate partners that were coming into the space to be part of this movement to leverage economic development opportunities specifically for people who are LGBT. I got really excited about the movement right away, I became a volunteer leader in the chamber council at that conference, and I served as the chair of the Midwest region and then after a few y...

So for those of you who do not know, Jen is the founder and CEO of Jennifer Brown Consulting which is New York City based consulting firm that is both a woman-owned business and an LGBT-certified business. She is a social entrepreneur committed to making an impact that creates healthier workplace cultures for all of the clients that she serves. Jen it is fabulous to have you back on the show, how are you? Jennifer Brown (Consulting): I'm great Jenn, thanks for having me. Jenn T. So I have had my company for about six years now, Jennifer Brown Consulting, or as we refer to it as JBC. And my background was a combination of non-profit management, I've always been pretty much of an activist if you can say, or an advocate for social change. And so I got my start in work like that and then at the same time I've always been an artist and performing artist and a vocalist. So I had two Masters degrees, one of which is in opera. And so in my twenties it was a combination of doing non-profit work, programming work for organizations that I believed in, and also singing and following the path of an artist. And that's actually led me to New York which is where I ...

Today's podcast episode is meant as a pre-cursor to the next episode! Each year the Human Rights Campaign puts out their Corporate Equality Index (CEI) which is something I absolutely swear by. This index helps me understand what companies are doing good for the LGBT community and what companies are not. In episode #52 of the podcast I will be doing a recap of the 2015 HRC CEI. But before doing that I wanted to first give you an idea of who the HRC is and what they do through the eyes of one their own - Liz Cooper, manager of the Workplace Project. I hope you enjoy! Do you have these benefits for your LGBT employees or do you not?

And this recognition spawned Dan to found the Mid-America Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, recognizing that there was a need to have one in the Kansas City area. So Dan, I've given the listeners a really brief overview of who you are and a little bit about your company; but why don't you tell us a little bit more about yourself, your story, and what your path looked like that led you to where you are today. Dan Nilsen: Hi Jenn, thanks for having me on today. You know I actually was asked about a year ago to be the topic of a reality series because my life- where I got to today is just so interesting because it involves so many pieces, some quite entertaining actually. I was born and raised in California and went to Long Beach State, and grew up and actually married my college sweetheart, Julie, out of that. And we had three children together. I have three daughters actually, they are- my first just graduated from college, my second just turned 21. So I can't believe that it's been so long. I started actually in Big Pharma out of college, so I was a pharmaceutical sales rep for a company like- called Marion Laboratories back in '85, and left school to work for them and ran sort of the LA market for that. I was 24 at the time and the average age of my district at the time was about 32. So that was quite a challenge to kind of move in, try to quickly learn all the things that you didn't know about managing people. I remember one of my first sort of a ride-along where you ride with one of your reps, she was talking about getting a divorce and I didn't know the first thing about what I could say that could possibly give her any advice. But I learned at that point I was supposed to be a good listener, and just share as much as I could about my reps with each other and I think was one of the ways that I certainly got to in terms of working with people and understanding the differences in people.

She is the CEO of 925 Hire, which is a staffing firm headquartered in northeast Ohio, whose focus is dedicated to creating a more equitable workplace. Her firm specializes in building cultural diverse staffing, and training solutions throughout the United States. She is also known as a job mingler which can be found on her business card. So Tonie, I've given the listeners a really brief overview of who you are, but why don't you tell us a little bit more about yourself and what your path looked like that led you to where you are today? Tonie Snell: Well I am first and foremost a mom and a grandparent of nine. I've been in the recruiting industry for about fourteen years. I started 9 to 5 Hire about three years ago because of an encounter that I experienced with an internal recruiter. I had just probably been out for about maybe six years, and I was really, really sensitive and she was going on and on about how glad she was to see me. There was another recruiter who was just there trying to solicit business from this company, and he happened to be gay and she went on to berate him and I said, 'This has to be a better way.' So I actually- at that moment I decided I'm going to do something a little different with the staffing industry, so my community- specifically the LGBT community, African American women, don't have to go through that. I decided to create a full service staffing firm to be the forefront of those communities. Jenn T Grace: Wow, that's really interesting. And especially because as most entrepreneurs you see some sort of problem and it's just your natural inclination to want to fix it. And for this to have been the case, and it being so personal to you, to have had to sit there and have somebody be berating this openly gay man and then you sitting there thinking like, 'Oh my God, I can't believe this person doesn't know this about me.' Tonie Snell: Yeah, exactly. And of course I didn't want to work with her anymore because then the people- I'm very clearly open and diverse. The people that I send to her may encounter that type of attitude, so I decided again just to be the forefront, and all of my clients know that we have- we're LGBT focused. So nine times out of ten, our candidates are going to be LGBT, that's not exclusive. Of course we're women-owned and African American-owned and actually Latino-owned; so it...

Deb has more than thirty years’ experience in both the insurance and financial industries. In 2005 she left the corporate environment and set out on her own path as a business owner, who currently owns a Liberty Tax franchise and Prior Enterprises, which has two divisions; a bookkeeping service division and a landscape design division. Deb, I have given the listeners a really high level overview of your past, but why don't you tell us a little bit more about yourself and what your path looked like that led you to where you are today? Deb Prior: Well, I started out as a child; so I won't go that far back because that was a long time ago and I've been alive for a long time. Jenn T Grace: That will be our secret. Deb Prior: Yes, okay. Well you know as you mentioned I went through the corporate world and I had a great career at New York Life primarily, where I was a financial advisor representative. And I'd gotten the entrepreneurial bug back then because as you know a number of financial advisors, that they are- it's like running your own business. And so I really, really enjoyed that. Different things in life caused my career to take several turns. But I'd never had a position or a job that I didn't like, and that I didn't find valuable, and that added- you know helped me become who I am. And the only job that I really hated was the last one. And that's when it was time for me to strike out on my own. So I actually started in the landscaping business because I really love plants. I got into the master gardener program, became a certified master gardener, and started out doing landscape designs and installations, and I bought a little red truck, and that was very fun. And then I was looking for something to do in the winter. And so I decided that I would do taxes, and was looking around for tax classes and I stumbled upon Liberty Tax. And the owner of that- Liberty Tax is a franchise, and I worked for a franchise owner and he said, "Well you're an entrepreneur, you should probably own one yourself." And I thought, "Yes, I probably should but let me see if I like this.

I am pleased to be talking with Evan Urbania, the CEO of Chatterblast Media, a social media marketing and online strategy firm whose clients range from small businesses to Fortune 500's, and non-profits and government entities. Evan first became an entrepreneur in his teens when he produced and recorded over forty albums for local musicians. Additionally, he is active in both non-profit and business communities as the co-founded of The Memoria Project, a non-profit effort to memorialize the lives lost on 9/11. He is also the president of the Independence Business Alliance which is greater Philadelphia's LGBT Chamber of Commerce. Evan, I have given the listeners a brief overview of who you are, but why don't you tell us a little bit more about yourself and your business, and what that path looked like for your that led you to where you are today. Evan Urbania: Sure, thank you. I guess when I was young and in high school I always knew that I wanted to be an entrepreneur and most of the time I didn't even know what that word meant. But I always knew that I liked building things, and being involved in new projects and being part of a team and also doing things on my own. And kind of as my bio says, when I wrote that my business partner and I, we joked about it and put it on our website, but it is kind of true. And when I was in high school, in my summer of my last year I ended up buying a bunch of audio recording equipment at a time when digital had just become accessible to the general public. And I said, "Mom and Dad, can I build a recording studio in my basement?' And of course they looked at me like I was crazy, but ultimately I did because I got away with everything anyway. And kind of figured out how to put this stuff together and buy this gear and spend all of my savings and market myself. And I lived in the small town of Rumson, New Jersey, and the town nearby Red Bank was a big arts community. And there was a lot of local artists and musicians and theatre. And so I found a way to just get connected to them and bring them into my space and I decided to call the company Sigma 6 Recording after the Pink Floyd band which was their name before they chose Pink Floyd and I was real fond of them back at the time.

Intro: You may think Google and Yahoo have a lock on search but it may be time to starting thinking a little differently. In this podcast we take a look at some niche search sites. Mike: Gordon, we love Google products and services - is there a the problem? It may be Google does too good of a job! Have you ever tried Google searching on a persons name? A simple Google search on my first and last name gives over 1.9 million results! Today, three companies control almost 90% of online search: - over 50% of all searches are done using Google - over 25% on Yahoo - and over 13% using Microsoft There are some problems though – these search engines primarily give results based on the number of sites linking to a page and the prominence of search terms on a page. Because they work this way there is room for niche. Mike: With this kind of lock on search it would be almost impossible for a startup to launch a successful general search product - right? Yes - it would be almost impossible but we are seeing some acrivirt in the niche areas. Areas like travel and finance are niches that have already been filled but today there seems to be some room in the people search area. Mike: Are there companies in this market we should be looking at? One of the startups to watch is Spock at www.spock.com. Spock is scheduled for their public launch the first week of August. Among other places on the web, Spock scans social networking websites like Facebook and LinkedIn. Search results give summary information (age, address, etc) about the person along with a list of website links that refer to the person. According to Spock 30% of the 7 billion searches done on the web every month are related to individuals. Spock says about half of those searches concern celebrities with the other half including business and personal lookups. According to Spock, a common problem that we face is that there are many people with the same name. Given that, how do we distinguish a document about Michael Jackson the singer from Michael Jackson the football player? With billions of documents and people on the web, we need to identify and cluster web documents accurately to the people they are related to. Mapping these named entities from documents to the correct person is what Spock is all about and they’re coming at the problem in an interesting way. Mike: I've looked at Spock - what is the Spock Challenge? They’ve launched what they call the Spock Challenge – more formally referred to as the SPOCK Entity Resolution Problem linked here: http://challenge.spock.com/pages/learn_more If you go to the site you can download a couple of data sets – one called a training set (approx 25,000 documents) and the other called a test set (approx 75,000 documents). Along with the document sets they include a set of target names. You assume that each document contains only one of the target names (even though most documents contain many names). The challenge is to partition all the documents relevant to a target name by their referent. Mike: When does the contest begin and end? It has already begun on 4/16/07. It will end on 11/16/07. On 11/16/07, Spock will run the final round of the competition and announce the winner. Here are the dates off the website: 4/16 Registration started 5/1- 8/15 Proposal submissions accepted 7/1 Leader board live 11/1 Finalists announced 11/16 Final round at Spock, winner announced Mike: What languages and tools be used? You can use any language and any non-commercial libraries, tools and data to develop the solution. There is one catch - the winner grants Spock non-exclusive right to use the software and data. As an FYI, much of Google is actualy written in Python with the Search Engine Core written in C++. Python provied scripting support for the search engine. and some apps like google code are done in pythonMike: Can you give us and example of how this works? From their website: Consider the following two documents with the target name "Michael Jackson": Michael Jackson - The King of Pop or Wacko Jacko? Michael Jackson statistics - pro-football-reference.com The referents of these articles are the pop star and football player, respectively. They’ve also included the ground truth for the training set so you have something to compare against. Once you're done training, you can run your algorithm on the test set and submit your results on this site. Spock will provide instant feedback in the form of a percentage rank score. This way you can see how you stack up against the other teams. So they provide you with a lot of well constructed data, and the ground truth about that data. “Ground truth? data is real results and you use this information to validate your search algorithm results. This data is documents about people, and the challenge is to determine all the unique people described in the data set. This data can be your training set. Once you have got your basic algorithm working against the training set, they let you further tune your code by running it against a second test data set and give you instant accuracy feedback in the form of a score. The score depends on how many correct unique people you can identify in the data. This way you can continue to refine your work, and see how you are doing, and how well others are doing. This looks like a great academic challenge. At the end of the contest time, you submit your code, a 3 page description of your approach, pre-built binary executables that can run in isolation on Spock servers, and your results (the “Software Entry?). Spock will select the finalists based upon submissions, and fly the finalists to visit the judges. The winner will win $50,000, 2nd place wins $5000 and 3rd place wins $2000. Mike: How doe people enter? You may enter the Contest by registering online at www.spock.com/contestregistration . You may register as an individual or as a team. During the registration process, you must provide your name, your age, your email address, and the country you are from. If you are entering on behalf of an organization, a school or a company, you must identify its name. If you are registering as a team, you must provide the same information for each member of your team as well as the identity of a team leader. You will also provide a name for your team or for yourself by which you or your team will be known to other participants in the Contest. Spock may change the name if it feels the name you select is not appropriate for any reason. Mike: What are the differences between the Spock Challenge and the Netflix Challenge? From Netflix website: The Netflix Prize (http://www.netflixprize.com ) seeks to substantially improve the accuracy of predictions about how much someone is going to love a movie based on their movie preferences. Improve it enough and you win one (or more) Prizes. Winning the Netflix Prize improves Netflix ability to connect people to the movies they love. Netflix provides you with a lot of anonymous rating data, and a prediction accuracy bar that is 10% better than what Cinematch can do on the same training data set. (Accuracy is a measurement of how closely predicted ratings of movies match subsequent actual ratings.) If you develop a system that Netflix judges  beats that bar on the qualifying test set they provide, you get serious money and the bragging rights. But (and you knew there would be a catch, right?) only if you share your method with Netflix and describe to the world how you did it and why it works. In addition to the Grand Prize, we’re also offering a $50,000 Progress Prize each year the contest runs. It goes to the team whose system we judge shows the most improvement over the previous year’s best accuracy bar on the same qualifying test set. No improvement, no prize. And like the Grand Prize, to win you’ll need to share your method with us and describe it for the world. The Netflix contest started October 2, 2006 and continues through at least October 2, 2011.So..... back to your question - The Netflix Challenge will run another 4 years; Spock Challenge has every intention to give out the grand prize to a team with a reasonable solution at the end of the 6 months. Netflix Chellenge sets an absolute standard for winning the grand prize; Spock Challenge intends to award to the best reasonable solution. Mike: How about some other companies? Wink – www.wink.com Similar to Spock – launched a few months ago. Claim that Wink People Search now searches over two hundred million people profiles. Searches people across numerous social networks including MySpace, LinkedIn, Friendster, Bebo, Live Spaces, Yahoo!360, Xanga, Twitter and more. Also included in the results are Web sources such as Wikipedia and IMDB with more coming all the time. Zoominfo – www.zoominfo.com Specializes in executive searches. Claim 37,131,140 People and 3,518,329 Companies indexed. You can currently search on three categories – people, jobs and companies. Searchwikia - http://search.wikia.com Jimmy Wales and his open-source search protocol and human collaboration project. From Press release: "Last week Wikia acquired Grub, the original visionary distributed search project, from LookSmart and released it under an open source license for the first time in four years. Grub operates under a model of users donating their personal computing resources towards a common goal, and is available today for download and testing at: http://www.grub.org/ . Grub, now open source, is designed with modularity so that developers can quickly and easily extend and add functionality, improving the quality and performance of the entire system. By combining Grub, which is building a massive, distributed user-contributed processing network, with the power of a wiki to form social consensus, the open source Search Wikia project has taken the next major step towards a future where search is open and transparent".
