Take a moment and picture the average person who came North during the Great Migration. Chances are good that you conjured someone who was African-American and working-class, bound for a city in search of a job, say, in a factory or in domestic service.  But as Kendra Boyd's new book, Freedom Enterprise, reveals, the Great Migration also saw entrepreneurs moving to the urban North in search of opportunity. Once they arrived in places like Detroit, these businesspeople had to navigate a fraught landscape that was profoundly structured by race and racism.   Today's episode tackles everything from female entrepreneurs, to illegal hustling, racial uplift, and urban renewal. The boxer Joe Louis even makes an appearance. And we'll grapple with a big and vexed question: Can you overcome racial capitalism by being a Black capitalist?

"We as a society are guilty of turning a blind eye to the ongoing sexism and exploitation of women that is blatantly displayed in Hip Hop. You see, I love Hip Hop, but does Hip Hop love me?" - A Conscious Sista'. Misogyny is fundamentally defined as hatred and violence towards women. This "violence" is not limited to physical aggression; it extends to actions that make women feel uncomfortable, hostile behavior, harassment, and other things that cause hurt and trauma.• Misogynoir: When this hatred and violence are directed explicitly towards black women, it is referred to as Misogynoir. Biggie, The Great Frank White spit lyrics that demeaned women. Did he hate women? Does Hip-Hop hate women? Get On Code! This episode of Prof. Kimya's class focuses on misogyny within hip-hop culture, particularly examining the works of artists such as Biggie Smalls. Can hip-hop be revolutionary while simultaneously exhibiting misogynistic and homophobic elements, questioning the industry's power structures and the roles of both male and female artists? The conversation extends to how misogyny is perpetuated through lyrics and consumer expectations, touching upon historical contexts of sexualized content in media and the challenges of creating cultural change within the music industry. We need solutions for addressing misogyny in hip-hop, beyond mere boycotts, by fostering critical engagement, supporting local artists, and challenging deeply ingrained power dynamics.Yep. Uncover the untold legacy of Marcus Garvey with our special guest, Dr. Julius Garvey, son of the iconic leader. Dr. Garvey sheds light on his father's extraordinary journey from Jamaica to becoming a beacon of Black empowerment across the globe. Through personal anecdotes and historical insights, we explore how pivotal events and figures like the Berlin Conference and Booker T. Washington shaped Marcus Garvey's vision, and how this legacy continues to inspire global Black communities today.Dr. Garvey shares the compelling story of his father's politically charged trial, orchestrated by the FBI to tarnish and criminalize his revolutionary efforts. We dismantle the myths around Garvey, revealing the truth behind the accusations and the ongoing fight to restore his reputation. By drawing parallels with figures like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, we underscore the persistent struggle against systemic oppression and the urgent need for historical justice and equality. The episode also broadens its focus to the influence of Black booksellers as cultural bastions, the ideological dynamics between Garvey's organization and the NAACP, and the entrepreneurial spirit that fuels the Garvey legacy. Through contributions from cultural nationalists and legal experts, we revisit the powerful messages of unity and empowerment that Marcus Garvey championed. Dr. Garvey's personal stories and reflections offer a rich narrative on how historical legacies continue to shape modern entrepreneurial journeys and community leadership.Support the showhttps://www.patreon.com/c/EA_BookClub
