The Do One Better! Podcast – Philanthropy, Sustainability and Social Entrepreneurship
Sidsel Kristensen, CEO of the LEGO Foundation, offers a deep look into the Foundation's mission to champion playful learning and create sustainable, impactful initiatives for children globally. The LEGO Foundation has a 25% stake in the LEGO Group. At the heart of the LEGO Foundation's work is its belief in learning through play — a philosophy Kristensen describes as a powerful approach to fostering creativity, resilience, and critical thinking in children, from infancy through adolescence. Far beyond a brand rooted in toys, the LEGO Foundation is an influential force in global education and child development. This enables the foundation not only to lead initiatives independently but also to create robust alliances that drive systemic change in underserved communities worldwide. The LEGO Foundation's efforts focus on children aged 0-12, but Kristensen emphasises that the philosophy of playful learning is a lifelong mindset, encouraging curiosity, adaptability, and collaboration. Kristensen underscores the necessity of learning from both successes and setbacks. To this end, the Foundation prioritises quality in grant-making, which she defines as investing thoughtfully, building a solid evidence base, and fostering a culture of continuous learning among grantees. The commitment to learning through evidence is central, with the Foundation's partnerships not only serving children directly but also generating insights that shape policy. A key area of discussion is the challenge of amplification: how to communicate the insights and successes of the Foundation's initiatives in a way that resonates with governments, policymakers, and the wider public. Kristensen reflects on the importance of simplifying complex issues without diminishing their significance, helping communities and leaders see that playful learning is not mere play, but a strategic approach to lifelong skills development. She points out that the brand strength of LEGO enables the Foundation to amplify its message effectively, allowing partners to leverage this brand association to build their own credibility in local contexts. Reflecting on the future, Kristensen outlines a strategy focused on impact, context-driven partnerships, and quality in grant-making, underscoring a vision that emphasises sustainability and scalability. She candidly discusses the complexities of creating sustainable change, noting that while philanthropy has a unique ability to take risks and innovate, it must also be accountable and pragmatic. The ultimate goal, Kristensen explains, is to influence ecosystems and drive changes that endure beyond individual grants or programs. She closes with a call for enhanced collaboration across funders, believing that transformative change requires collective efforts rather than isolated projects. The Do One Better! Podcast – Philanthropy, Sustainability and Social Entrepreneurship
John Goodwin, Executive Chairman of the Learning Economy Foundation, offers an insightful examination of how emergent technologies — particularly verified credentials and digital credentials — are set to transform global education and employment systems. Through his role, John advocates for leveraging technology as a public good to promote equity, mobility, and individual agency, especially in underserved populations. The Learning Economy Foundation, unlike traditional philanthropic organizations, focuses on developing open-source technologies and infrastructure that others can build upon, facilitating systemic change and innovation. A major theme in the conversation is the role of verified digital credentials, which allow individuals to hold digital versions of diplomas and certificates that carry the same credibility as traditional paper equivalents. These credentials have wide-ranging applications, from employment and education to areas like property rights, and aim to simplify and secure the transfer of qualifications across borders and systems. John emphasizes that the foundation is particularly focused on addressing gaps in the current education systems that fail to serve impoverished populations, especially in developing countries. By enabling the use of low-cost digital solutions, they hope to make a meaningful impact where educational inequity is most prevalent. John's past experience as CEO of the LEGO Foundation and his work with the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), a UN initiative, further illustrates his commitment to systemic change in education. He acknowledges the inherent challenges of shifting long-established systems but stresses the importance of multi-stakeholder engagement and collaboration to drive meaningful progress. Systemic change, as John learned during his tenure at LEGO, cannot be achieved in isolation; it requires the cooperation of governments, educational institutions, businesses, and technologists working together toward a common goal. The conversation also touches on the importance of serendipity in this process. John highlights that while planning and strategy are vital, unexpected opportunities and collaborations often become key turning points. His reflections on embracing flexibility and agility offer a refreshing counterpoint to rigid planning in a field that demands innovation. John's vision for business education is also explored. As a board member of PRME, he champions the integration of responsible management practices into business school curricula, noting that one in three graduates globally come from business-related fields. He sees future leaders as vital to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), advocating for a broader understanding of success beyond profit maximization, focusing on the social and environmental impact of business decisions. John argues that the pace of change must accelerate to meet the urgency of the global challenges laid out by the SDGs. Thank you for downloading this episode of the Do One Better Podcast. Maureen Dunne: The Neurodiversity Edge Maureen Dunne is a cognitive scientist, neurodiversity expert, global keynote speaker, board director, and business leader with over two decades of experience helping organizations build thriving cultures. She has served as a Senior Advisor to some of the world's top organization, including the LEGO Foundation, Cornell University, and Members of Congress. She is the author of The Neurodiversity Edge: The Essential Guide to Embracing Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, and Other Neurological Differences for Any Organization*. We often don't notice our deeply held biases — and there's certainly bias against neurodiversity. In this conversation, Maureen and I discuss the research, mindsets, and contributions relevant to neurodiversity. Plus, how neurodiversity can provide an edge for almost every organization. Key Points We often don't see our deeply held biases. As one example, we assume that north is “up” on maps and globes, even though that's only a construct. Research and estimates vary, but at least 20% of the population is neurodivergent. Divergent bees in hives find new sources of honey. Instead of viewing neurodivergence from a deficit-based perspective, use a strengths-based approach. Intellectual capability is entirely independent of having a neurodivergent profile. Rather than maintaining accommodations for “quirky people,” move towards a norm of university accommodations that benefit the entire employee population. There is not much I enjoy more than sitting down with one of the innovative thinkers in compliance, Carsten Tams to find out what is on his mind regarding compliance. Tom Fox recently had the opportunity to do so on the topic of making compliance training memorable. Over this short, five-part series, we will introduce the problem and challenges and then provide you with four proven strategies for success in your compliance training. In this concluding Episode 5, we discuss how making ethics and compliance training playful can enhance learning. Our learning brain likes games. When people shift into a playful state of mind, they immerse themselves more deeply into the learning activity. Their mood brightens, their mind opens up, and they are intensely focused and more receptive to new information. Playful learning supports a deeper understanding of concepts, better recall of knowledge, and better transfer of skills to novel problems. They explore the concept of the ‘Magic Circle' in gaming, which engenders an immersive, playful state of mind that fosters openness and engagement. By employing game-based learning experiences like the ‘Ethics Kit Find Your Path' card game, the discussion showcases how ethical scenarios can be addressed in an interactive, fun way. Through the use of commitment, action, and resource cards, employees engage in collaborative problem-solving related to their organization's ethical dilemmas. The episode emphasizes the importance of experiential, social, and strength-based learning, arguing that an engaging user experience (UX) in training not only makes learning enjoyable but also more effective in reinforcing ethical behaviors within organizations. Play can help you remember things for longer Learning through play is an excellent way for children and adults to develop new skills, but it's also a great way to alleviate stress and trauma and tap into different parts of the mind. Our guest on Episode 244 of Class Dismissed is an expert on learning through play. Dr. Bo Stjerne Thomsen is the Vice-President and Chair of Learning through Play in the LEGO Foundation. The Lego Foundation has partner researchers and labs worldwide that study learning through play. And they have also released a study on children, technology, and play. Thomsen and the LEGO Foundation have examined the science behind learning through play, and they know that children have wholly emerged in learning when being hands-on with toys and trying things out. “First, you understand things much deeper when you test it try it out,” says Thomsen. “You basically remember things for longer and understand concepts better.” In this episode of Class Dismissed, Thomsen dives into the skills learned while playing. If you are a nonprofit leader who thinks about fundraising with the same intensity that you bring to tackling your mission, this is your episode. Chances are you have been denied the level of funding needed to scale your most impactful strategies or turned down for general operating support, which enables you to deploy resources as needed. In this episode of Power Station, we explore what happens when our most open-minded philanthropic leaders design a new model for identifying and investing in solutions to our world's most pressing challenges. Dr. Cecilia Conrad brings brilliance, intentionality, and a belief in the power of collaboration to her leadership of Lever for Change, an affiliate of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. She is cultivating a cohort of donors, from the LEGO Foundation to the Kellogg Foundation and MacKenzie Scott, who agree that the most powerful solutions to complex challenges, from climate change to infant and maternal health care and the refugee crisis are generated by nonprofits. They have stepped up to invest $10 million in the winners of competitions among exceptional nonprofits. Dr. Gordon is the deeply committed change maker who tells this story best.
"One of the challenges this year that I loved was one of my friends created a book and she had 40 questions and I had to answer each question with a picture. And really good questions about reflecting about life, about my past, about my present, about where I want to go." Diego Adame Diego Adame turned 40 during 2022 and decided to take on 40 challenges with friends and family as a way of celebrating the year. This included a variety of physical, fun and creative challenges, like skydiving, trying 40 different types of cheese, dressing up as an ant in Mexico City with friends and swimming 40km during the year with his siblings. Some of the challenges led him to reflect on his life and even revise some of his long-held beliefs about his childhood. Diego works at The Lego Foundation and we talk about our experiences with play in the workplace, and how it helps to create a psychologically safe environment, build relationships, and increase creativity. We conclude this episode with a reflection on how we can always find the time for things that are important to us. Diego Adame, at 28, was scared of becoming old and turning 30. He thought adulthood started at 30 (now he knows it starts at 50). Whenever he approaches an age with a multiple of 10, he feels the need to question his life. He climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro on July 2012 and, without planning it, started a tradition of celebrating birthdays with challenges. Diego has worked in the development sector for almost 15 years and is currently based in Denmark with The Lego Foundation as Senior Director Team Lead of Inclusive Learning. Tune in to hear how Piet and his fellow Co-Founders created MyMachine, why they're asking children to create a “Dream Machine”, and what a Dream Machine is in the first place. Piet explains how MyMachine challenges the creativity of students at every grade level, from primary school to college/university, inspiring them to think big. “It really ranges from a very personal to a global scope because of the open-ended question that we pose to them at the beginning of our methodology.” – Piet Grymonprez Piet describes how MyMachine's methodology adapts to each child's personality and how it encourages them to be open, take risks, share their ideas, and develop creative confidence. Then, he shares how teachers can collaborate with MyMachine and start their own chapter. Piet's Tips for Teachers and Parents: Whatever you want to do with your kids/students, challenge yourself to do it with an open-ended approach. Don't make it a competition. Embrace systems thinking. In this episode of the Fueling Creativity in Education podcast, Dr. Cyndi Burnett and Dr. Matthew Worwood welcome back Dr. Ron Beghetto along with Laura McBain, Co-Director of the K12 Lab at the Stanford d.school. Ron and Laura recently came out with a new book, “My Favorite Failure: How Setbacks Can Lead to Learning and Growth”. As a human-centered designer, Laura's work focuses on understanding the ecosystem of education and finding meaningful opportunities for disruptive design and innovative educational experiences. Listen in to learn about Ron and Laura's personal favorite failures, the relationship between expectations and failure, how to start the school year off with sharing favorite failures, and the valuable difference between mistakes and failures. The duo also shares their best tips and advice for new teachers as well as how to get students to push through feelings of failure so that they can learn and grow from it. Questions Answered: Why is it important to acknowledge and talk about emotions in school? Are we more willing to take risks when we don't know the potential consequences? Are we more likely to experience failure when we do not know anything about the environment? What types of failure are the most impactful for students? (ie. F letter grades, public failure) …and more! Laura's Tips for Teachers and Parents: Start talking about failure more. Make sure the work you're designing for young people are worth the failure. How do you design real life examples where students are taking on work of consequence? Provide multiple opportunities for students to reflect on failure daily and/or throughout the lesson. Ron's Tips for Teachers and Parents: Stay away from empty slogans that minimize emotions. Find ways to acknowledge and validate the emotional pain and difficulty one experiences when they're failing and talk about what to do next. Encourage and take beautiful risks yourself. Invite kids to give you feedback on your failures. Sesame Street has been entertaining children around the world for generations. First launched in 1969, the show was an experiment to see if television – then just an emerging technology – could be used to educate young children. Today, this unique style of education and social messaging continues to be delivered by a diverse cast of muppets – and humans – to children and caregivers across seven continents in more than a dozen different languages. In this episode of The Impact Room, we take a detailed look at Ahlan Simsim, a new Arabic language version of the show, which has been designed specifically to target Middle Eastern children affected by war and displacement, and its sister programme supporting Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. Ahlan Simim uses music and humour to tackle emotional issues and provide youngsters (and their caregivers) tools for dealing with feelings of fear and anxiety. It mixes media outputs, training sessions, and school materials to also deliver basic literacy and numeracy learning for children who may be locked out of formal education.Sesame Workshop received more than $100m of grant funding from the MacArthur Foundation for the project it is doing in partnership with International Rescue Committee (IRC). A year later, The Lego Foundation gave Sesame Workshop another $100m to support its work with BRAC and their programming for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. Together, these two grants are the largest ever philanthropic intervention into early years education in a humanitarian setting. To discuss Ahlan Simsim, our host Maysa Jalbout, is joined by Shari Rosenfeld, senior vice president of International Social Impact at Sesame Workshop, and Marianne Stone, Ahlan Simim regional project director for IRC.She also speaks to Professor Hiro Yoshikawa, a community and development psychologist specialising in early childhood and the co-founder of Global TIES, a research centre at New York University, which is carrying out an Impact evaluation of Ahlan Simsim.“The vision here is to really to develop a new set of models in this somewhat brand-new field of early childhood development in the humanitarian sector, which has been largely overlooked for a very long time," he explains. Many of the topics explored as well as materials used in Ahlan Simsim are applicable to other conflict and displacement settings. Indeed, some of the content is already being adapted for other countries. In Iraq, for example, the US government's overseas development agency, USAID, has provided additional funding to create some Iraq-specific Ahlan Simsim materials. And, just as we were putting this podcast episode together, Sesame workshop confirmed that work was also underway to create a new suite of resources in Dari, Pashto, Spanish, Ukrainian, and English - with additional languages to follow - to support young children and caregivers affected by crisis. For more about Ahlan Simsim and the work of Sesame Workshop in the Middle East visit their website or the IRC website. The Impact Room is brought to you by Philanthropy Age and Maysa Jalbout. This episode was produced and edited by Louise Redvers.

On episode 3, JP and Matt interview John Goodwin (then-CEO, LEGO Foundation) and Kevin Frey (just-departed-CEO, Right to Play) about the relationships between brands, foundations, and social impact organizations. They share insights on: how a company can effectively deliver social impact, tied to its business purpose, by supporting all elements of that ecosystem; how NGOs need to think strategically about their partnerships with brands and foundations; and how to build a brand idea -- in this case on "the impact of play" -- through educating all the stakeholders (governments, companies, and people) that must work together to drive lasting social change.
