Love hurts in the dizzyingly unpredictable Strange Darling – a thriller that upends expectations at every turn, courtesy of our guest this week, Las Vegan-born writer-director JT Mollner. JT grew up surrounded by immersive storytelling – his father ran a haunted house in Vegas that he helped conceptualise every Halloween as a child. That adolescence came in handy when crafting this tale of a serial killer on the final days of a bloody rampage through rural America: Strange Darling, though not a horror, feels decidedly like a sprint through a madhouse in all its gruesome shocks and Tarantino-esque play with chronology. On this spoiler-filled episode of Script Apart, the filmmaker breaks down the film and its corkscrewing structure. We get into how the film uses chronology as a storytelling weapon, what JT is willing (and unwilling) to reveal about the visions inspiring the killer's rampage, and the idea of the movie as a romantic drama – one that just so happens to be full of murder.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. No one expected much when the Vegas Golden Knights played their first season in 2017. Now, since the team's success in their first season and winning the Stanley Cup in their 6th, it's hard to find a Las Vegan who doesn't rep VGK merch. And key to their success in the community? The spectacular entertainment at every home game. The energy they create in the arena during their pregame shows is unlike any other team in the league — and today, VGK entertainment is legendary (c'mon, they even dropped a hockey puck from SPACE). Tyler Ferraro, VGK's Director of Entertainment Experience, tells co-host Dayvid Figler what it takes to produce a pregame show only Vegas could handle. We're on social media! The episode begins with a nod to a former Tennessee Titans linebacker, Terry Killens, who will make history when Super Bowl LVII is played in Las Vegan. ... Brian Callahan's first public act as Tennessee Titans head coach was an introductory press conference Thursday. The 49-year-old son of former Oakland Raiders head coach Bill Callahan showed much emotion when he discussed those who influenced him most in his professional journey but did not display much of an ego when he reviewed the career path he traveled that got him to this point. ... In previous jobs, Callahan worked with accomplished quarterbacks Peyton Manning, Matthew Stafford and Derek Carr well into their respective careers. He noted that things he learned from those players should help him as he works to develop current Titans quarterback Will Levis. ... Callahan says he is eager to meet his new players, but Denard Walker says the majority of those introductions will have to wait. Most players won't be around the facility for the next few months. ... Callahan has not been a head coach at any level of football, but he does have the benefit of having watched his father do it and having spent time in NFL facilities as a youngster. He also has the benefit of the past five seasons as offensive coordinator with the Cincinnati Bengals under Zac Taylor, who effectively groomed Callahan for this opportunity. ... The same day she signed Callahan to a contract, controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk promoted Ran Carthon to executive vice president/general manager, which makes him the final voice on all personnel decisions. Additionally, Chad Brinker was promoted to president of football operations, which places him second in line behind Carthon. ... The moves eliminate any chance for Callahan to make an early grab for power and provides clarity in the decision-making process. It is not clear, however, whether this was a good decision or a means for Adams Strunk to pass the buck.

Every city has its linguistic quirks (we're looking at you, “HOW-stun” street in New York City) — saying things “right” is one of the quickest ways to prove that you're a local or reveal that you're not. So what about Southern Nevada's local lingo? Do you know how to pronounce McLeod Dr., Tule Springs, or that weird exit off the I-15, Zzyzx Road? And how have hospitality, gaming, and our terrible traffic influenced the way we speak? Today, lifelong Las Vegan and City Cast host Dayvid Figler sits down with two other longtime locals, Brent Holmes and Lille Allen, to rattle off the “must-know” words for newcomers, and debate some of our more contentious terms. Be sure to check our interview with UNR linguist Valerie Fridland about the pronunciation of “Nevada.” We're on social media! Follow us @CityCastVegas on Instagram. A Las Vegan since the first grade, Michael shares his journey from failed performer to staffer for Rep. Dina Titus to being appointed to the County Commission, being elected outright and now preparing his re-election campaign. Hosts: Jonathan Jossel, Gary Vickery

Every year, the Mental Health Institute releases a report on the state of mental health in America. One of the measures looks at the incidence of youth mental illness compared to the availability of quality mental healthcare. And for the last five years, through 2022, Nevada has ranked dead last in youth mental health. Just earlier this month, a U.S. Department of Justice report indicated that Nevada likely broke federal law for putting too many children with behavioral issues into residential care instead of community care (a less intense “middle space” that advocates say is lacking in Nevada). To help us understand why the problem is so bad, Dayvid sits down with Dr. Michelle Paul, a longtime Las Vegan and Executive Director of UNLV's Practice, a community mental health clinic that just opened a youth-focused satellite clinic last week. They get into the mental health crisis our youth are facing (pre- and post-pandemic), why mental health treatment is increasingly inaccessible, and what policies need to change for it all to get better. What's your take on the state of mental health care in Nevada? Do you have a story to share? Leave us a voicemail or a text message at 702-514-0719, or find us on the blue bird app @CityCastVegas. In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge talks to the author of https://roncouryauthor.com/ (Tenacity), Ron Coury. Ron is a Las Vegan businessman who survived the Marines, corruption, and cancer – and successfully ran over twenty businesses throughout his career. Ron shares that he was a student in Brooklyn when he was drafted into the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He chose boot camp with the hardest training but ultimately wasn't sent as the war de-escalated. Ron shares that the grit he gained through the military is what afforded him the business mindset that led to his success. Train to teach yourself that failure isn't an option. You can't predict the hurdles, but you know they'll be there. Ron says that the key is not to let the hurdles and challenges stop you. Work your way around each obstacle and solve the problem. After Ron got out of the Marines, he shares that he moved to Las Vegas. The city afforded him the ability to enter into many verticals that are very specific to Vegas – he then started a business, but maintained many side gigs. He was in the tavern business to start with and he scaled and grew. He shares how he grew his business and retained customers – and all the innovations he made along the way. Adding video poker to the bar business also opened doors into the gaming business as the industry developed. Josh and Ron also explore how to know when you should start your next business venture. He says it's not always a conscious feeling, but he wanted to continue to grow and challenge himself – so he did. He trained and led his team to continue to nurture his various businesses as he would continue onto the next challenge and venture. But how do you know who is fit for the job? When you see someone with amazing talent, bite the bullet and invest the time and money into training them to make the same decisions you would make. Ron shares he would constantly shadow people, and though it can get boring, it teaches your best employees how to act as you would in times of struggle or crisis. But what about when you can't control the outcome? Gauge pivoting by predicting how an industry will develop. You can't always accurately predict, but look over the context clues and innovations in technology to stay on the cutting edge of your vertical. You need to stay on top of these changes to stay successful. This is all part of having grit and tenacity as a business owner. Want to learn more? Remy Ruesenberg is a born and bred Las Vegan who grew up around the hospitality industry; Remy's mother worked at the Bellagio from the time he was born and Remy eventually followed in her footsteps, steadily working his way up from pool lifeguard to his current role: Director Of Hotel Operations at Park MGM & NoMad Las Vegas. In this episode, Remy shares a story that helped shape his ethos as a leader in the hospitality industry — a road trip through the UK and Ireland planned by his wife's grandfather. However, Grandpa's preferred way of traveling was to mostly wing it; walk up to a new village, stop into a pub for a pint with the locals, and ask around for places to stay that night. For Remy, it was a lesson in the joy of serendipity and a reminder that the ultimate hospitality is kindness from strangers. This was also the trip when Remy got down on one knee and asked his partner to marry him... in a Scottish castle, naturally!

AJ is a current Las Vegan (couldn’t resist), although he is originally from Bend, Oregon. AJ was struck in the face by a pool filter that essentially exploded while he was attempting to repair it. He spent several weeks in the hospital and rehab. He doesn’t remember much of anything for the first months after the accident, and uses the stories of his wife and family to reconstruct exactly what the recovery process was like for him. I loved talking to AJ for this episode. I hope you enjoy it and pull something from his story and insights.

Ken Murray is a different dude; he is among the less than 1% of the human population who primarily eat fruit and consider it a ‘superior’ fuel. For the most part, the twentysomething Las Vegan lives off of foods such as melons, dates, oranges, berries, lemons and mangos. At his zenith, Ken estimates he was eating 10-15 pounds of fruit per day. He is a huge proponent of fasting, and recently finished up a 42-day fast where he consumed only citrus fruits — believing the fast raised his spiritual awareness and detoxifies his body. How much fruit is too much fruit? LifeJitsu founder Frank Forza has pondered that question many times. Frank is far from a Fruitarian, but is aware of famous fruitarians such as Steve Jobs and Boston Marathon runner Michael Arnstein (said to consume 30 pounds or so of fruit some days). Join us for this fascinating conversation as Forza looks at life through the eyes of a fruitarian who sees his nutrition lifestyle as a path to enlightenment. “There were people a
