The Capital Connector, Business Matchmaker and featured in Arabian Business 30 under 40, Dave Chaggar joins me this week in the ARENA. From Family business, becoming an entrepreneur to his journey in Capital Club Dubai, in the podcast you'll learn what it takes to facilitate successful multi million dollar deals and how to build a client base through prioritizing relationships and solving problems. In this podcast we dive into the following topics:The importance of solving pain points in the market placeHow to find investorsThe Capital Club DubaiSuccess in the automotive and power industryDave's biography:Dave was born in 1983 to parents of East African descent who moved to the UK when they were in their teens and started a business manufacturing automotive parts. Their clients included Nissan, Mercedes, BMW, Bentley and Toyota… to mention just a few. From his very early years, he was part of an entrepreneurial family unit, and was encouraged through all his early years, including school holidays, to participate in some form in the family-run enterprise. After being a key-player in two mega industries, Dave was ready for a new take on life. His previous years had taught him that he was a good networker, he had an impressive ability to win over peers and to form strong connections. And this led to the Capital Club. Initiated by an Emirati friend, Dave was invited there and introduced to the son of the founder of ENOC. “Where would I meet someone of that stature, but here at the Capital Club,” says Dave, sitting in the patio of the plush building that is home to this exclusive establishment. The tall green plants play against the creamy colours of the walls, most of which boast a magnificent collection of fine artworks. In fact, most art galleries would be envious of the collection housed within these stately rooms that are filled with leather recliners and plush sofas. The understated elegance is reminiscent of an old gentleman's club in London. And it is here that Dave has found his niche. He took over as Sales Director with the aim of positioning the club as the number one networking and business hub in the United Arab Emirates. Scott Armstrong is the former editor-in-chief of Arabian Business magazine, and founder of ‘mentl' – a platform which provides a holistic approach to mental health issues in the workplace. With more than 30 years of experience as a journalist, editor and strategic communications consultant, his storied career has taken him from the UK to the Bahamas, through Oman to the United Arab Emirates. In this in-depth interview, Scott reflects on his years as an editor and how “instinct, leadership and management skills” are key to success – despite editors rarely receiving management training when promoted, which results in them lacking the necessary skills to lead effectively; argues that in local journalism, there is always a local angle to be found even within global news events – recalling his time working on The Evening Chronicle in Newcastle (UK), when they were able to find local residents who had been first-hand witnesses to the 9/11 attack in Manhattan; and reveals what inspired him to set up his new firm ‘mentl' – a medium that finds solutions for protecting employees' mental health – which is “the right thing to do” and is “best for both them and the business”.

Today marks the start of Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK, and this year's theme is a topic very close to my heart: loneliness. Most people who experience mental health issues tend to have one thing in common – they all feel extremely lonely in their daily struggle. What if you could turn philanthropy on its head, and make giving to charity easy, simple, and part of everyday life? We'd solve a lot of problems in the world, right? Well that's exactly what my next guest has done - to incredible effect. My guest this week is Jad Toubayly, CEO and Co-Founder of Idealz. Idealz is an ecommerce store which sells self-branded sports clothing and stationery. You sign up to the app, and with every purchase you can win a prize - and we're talking huge prizes here - I live in hope of landing a Mercedes G Wagon!Every customer who opts to donate the item they've bought to Dubai Cares gets given an extra ticket entry into the prize draw. This incentive system is widely used by the retail industry to promote sales, and was re-purposed by Idealz to create a formidable method of promoting corporate social responsibility. The popularity of this impressive start-up has resulted in substantial contributions to Dubai Cares and is already inspiring other SMEs to follow suit.I had a great chat with Jad about business, creativity and what gets him out of bed in the morning. He's extremely modest when it comes to his business achievements - this is despite being in the Arabian Business 40 under 40 list and being on his eleventh business start up. I'm curious about what drives hugely successful business people and Jad was honest and open about challenges and why gratitude and smiles are what makes him tick, more than a balance sheet.I hope you enjoy our conversation. Noor Sweid started her professional life as a strategy consultant in biotech and pharma; she then moved back to Dubai where she joined her family business, Depa, an interior contracting company. She helped grow it from $60M in revenue to $600M over 8 years. When it became the biggest such company in the world, Noor led its IPO on the London Stock Exchange. In parallel, Noor founded ZenYoga, the first yoga and pilates studio in the MENA region. It grew to become the largest chain of wellness studios in the Middle East and was sold to a private equity firm. Noor currently owns and runs Global Ventures, a Dubai-based, growth-stage VC firm that invests in emerging markets. I was curious to know, given these very different life & work experiences: what were the big lessons learned? It kept coming back to just one: you need a good story. Whether you’re building a yoga business or selling a contracting firm, people need to understand and believe in your vision. I also asked Noor why and how she does what she does. My favorite quote of the episode is “Good enough should be the bar” - am delighted that Noor shares my distaste for perfection. You’ll have to listen for more context – and loads of book recommendations. In 2018, Noor was named by Forbes as one of the World’s Top 50 Women in Tech, and she received the Arab Woman Award for Finance. She has been named in the Arabian Business 100 Most Powerful Arab Women list three times. Noor is Chairperson of the Middle East Venture Capital Association, was on the Founding Board of Endeavor UAE, and serves as a Director for MIT Sloan, TechWadi, and The Grooming Company. By the way, some funky stuff happened with the studio’s recording system this time, so today we are literally going to get right into it! If you'd like to reach Noor, you can find her on Twitter and LinkedIn. While you're here, please remember to subscribe, rate and review the podcast. Thank you!
Today I’m excited to share with you my 100th episode of Extraordinary Women Radio! And I'm extremely honored to feature Zainab Salbi, the founder of Women for Women International for this milestone episode! At the age of 23, Zainab Salbi founded Women for Women International, a grassroots humanitarian and development organization dedicated to serving women survivors of wars by offering support, tools, and access to life-changing skills to move from crisis and poverty to stability and economic self-sufficiency. Under her leadership as the organization’s CEO (1993-2011), the organization grew from helping 30 women upon its inception to more than 500,000 women in 8 conflict areas. It also distributed more than $100 million in direct aid and micro credit loans that impacted more than 1.7 million family members. Today Zainab shares her story of how she founded Women for Women International. She also shares her deeply personal story of growing up in the shadows of Saddam Hussein, a secret she kept hidden for many years. We talk about the power of facing our fears, and Zainab shares the catalyst moment when she brought her own truth forward in telling this story. There is so much wisdom in this interview, as Zainab shares her firsthand knowledge around the vital role of women in war, and how women are naturally called to make a difference in this world. This is a powerful episode my friends. You won't want to miss it. Zainab is also the host and creator of several TV shows including #MeToo, Now What? on PBS (2018), The Zainab Salbi Project, original series on Huffington Post (2016), The Nidaa Show with TLC Arabic where she started with the historic first interview of Oprah Winfrey in the Arab world, and a new original series with Yahoo News! Through Her Eyes with Zainab Salbi.
