Welcome to the 15th episode of Immigration Today!. In this episode, Angeline Chen interviews Maru Mora-Villalpando. Maru is a long time immigrant activist and the founder of Latino Advocacy, LLC and co-founder of La Resistencia. La Resistencia is a grassroots organization working to end the detention of immigrants and stop deportations. Specifically, their goal is to shut down the Northwest Detention Center (NWDC), and to end all detention and deportation in Washington State. Latino Advocacy provides policy development and advocacy consulting to organizations and grassroots groups in Washington state. They empower organizations to organize effectively by conducting workshops, facilitating group meetings, and providing leadership development training to leaders. In this episode, Maru explains how she became politicized and how she got involved in the struggle for immigrant rights. She grew up in Mexico D.F. and quickly became aware of the social movements that took place in her city as well as she became aware of the struggles that forced her out of her native land. Upon her arrival in the United States, Maru quickly found similar activist circles and found herself heavily involved in the fight to close Northwest Detention Center (NWDC) and for-profit detention centers in the state. Maru became a target as an undocumented activist herself and faced her own deportation case in the midst of all of this. After a long battle, Maru's deportation case was dropped and she was granted lawful permanent residency.  Maru has been featured in Univision, KUOW radio station, The Seattle Times, Los Angeles Times, The Globalist, Democracy Now! and many more. Kim Ives, editor of the English section of Haiti Liberté, joins us to talk about the terrible tragedy that took place in Haiti this week, where at least 62 people have been killed and dozens injured after a tanker transporting gasoline exploded in Cap-Haitien, how fuel shortages played a role in this incident, with people lining up to collect fuel directly from the truck, and how precarity can lead people to take more risks to secure essential supplies. We also talk about new reports related to the assassination of President Jovenel Moise, and how he allegedly kept lists of prominent politicians and public figures that were connected to the drug trade and how this may have played a part in his killing. Maru Mora Villalpando, founder of La Resistencia, community organizer and immigrant activist, talks to us about the new proposal spearheaded by Vice President Kamala Harris, where she announced that corporations like Pepsi and Cargill will make multi-billion dollar investments in Central America to allegedly “solve” the root causes of immigration there. We talk about how this is neither a novel nor the right solution to the issue, since this further entrenches the cycle of labor exploitation for companies that have already been there and have either eroded or destroyed labor and environmental regulations that, in fact, may be one of the main drivers of immigration. Shane Stranahan, co-host of Faultines on Radio Sputnik, joins hosts Michelle Witte and Bob Schlehuber to talk about a new study published by Cornell University which argues that we may be at an actual “tipping point” where no issue imaginable can unite Republicans and Democrats again, with political polarization at an all-time high. We talk about the methodology used and how constraints on framing issues within a two-party system and our economic paradigm can reinforce current political deadlock and undermine potential avenues for cooperation. Bryan Weaver, founder and executive director of Hoops Sagrado, talks to us about Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors breaking records, Enes Kanter Freedom's political postures, and widespread sexual harassment in the Washington Football Team workplace.

Tina Landis, environmental and social justice advocate and author of "Climate Solutions Beyond Capitalism," joins us to discuss what looks like some good news - a victory in the fight to connect air polluters to the deaths they cause. Last week, in what is being called a landmark case, a coroner in the UK ruled that air pollution was a cause of death for a 9-year-old London girl. "Philip Barlow, the inner south London coroner, said Ella Kissi-Debrah’s death in February 2013 was caused by acute respiratory failure, severe asthma and air pollution exposure," The Guardian reported. He said over the course of her life, emissions of nitrogen dioxide exceeded EU and national safety thresholds, particulate matter levels exceeded World Health Organization guidelines and that that kind of pollution "both induced and exacerbated" her severe asthma, the outlet noted. What could this mean in other pollution cases?Community organizer Maru Mora-Villalpando, an immigrant to the US and founder of La Resistencia; and Carlos Castaneda, immigration attorney, joins us to discuss Mexico’s apparent effort to control the work of US officials and agents inside Mexico - and the way it’s being covered. A Daily Beast story put it this way: “‘The Winners Are the Cartels’: Mexico Slaps Cuffs on the DEA.” But upon reading the story, it looks like a country just trying to place some restrictions on the actions of foreign agents within its borders. The Daily Beast is appalled that the reform strips diplomatic immunity from US agents in Mexico, but isn't diplomatic immunity for foreign mission staff, not for Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and FBI agents? The law also says foreign agents have to apply to Mexican authorities to carry a firearm in the country and that they have to share information they gather with Mexican officials and federal authorities, none of which sounds shocking to me. What's going on here?Alan MacLeod, author, journalist, media analyst and member of the Glasgow University Media Group, joins us to discuss what it is like to be inside the UK right now as the country deals with a new variant of COVID-19, as well as what exactly is in the latest pandemic stimulus bill here in the US. "Britain was all but cut off from the rest of Europe on Monday, with flights and trains banned by some 40 countries and freight deliveries halted at French ports, as its neighbors tried desperately to stop a fast-spreading variant of the coronavirus from leaving the UK," the New York Times reported.Jackie Luqman, co-host of By Any Means Necessary, joins us as we look at "Small Axe," a British anthology film series created and directed by Steve McQueen. With the new coronavirus-related restrictions and the alarming rise of COVID-19 cases in the state of Washington, the government continues to fail to prioritize the health of the people inside the NWDC. We'll also discuss US President-elect Joe Biden previewing his agenda for his first 100 days in office.Dan Kovalik, lawyer, professor and author of “No More War: How the West Violates International Law by Using ‘Humanitarian Intervention’ to Advance Economic and Strategic Interests," joins us to discuss OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma’s guilty plea on Tuesday and how that helps the Sackler family. The company admitted to committing three felonies in its efforts to keep prescriptions of the painkiller flowing, including paying illegal kickbacks to doctors; paying a medical records company to send doctors information on patients that encouraged them to prescribe more opioids; and lying to the Drug Enforcement Administration about trying to prevent its opioids from entering the black market and misleading the agency to boost its manufacturing quotas. But this plea has the opposite effect of what one might guess - rather than holding any of the Sackler family, who made billions of dollars from these drugs, accountable, it instead preserves the value of the company so it can be turned into a public-benefit corporation, which can then be plundered for fines and settlements, leaving the Sacklers’ profits untouched. Is this right?Dr. Larry Caplin, a national leader on public health subjects and health care logistics and the CEO of DOCS Health, joins us to discuss the intersection of sports and COVID-19. Despite the pandemic, sports leagues continue to play and even continue to begin seasons in the midst of record numbers of new cases. National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball begins Wednesday, and there's already been a fair amount of chaos even before the first game is played. A number of coaches have tested positive for COVID-19, and several teams have seen their matchups canceled or postponed, including Baylor University's No. 1-ranked men's team. On the women's side, No. 3-ranked University of Connecticut has suspended all team activities after a member of the program tested positive. NCAA football continues to see teams cancel games due to the virus. Should these leagues continue to play, or is it time that they end their seasons?Jim Kavanagh, editor of The Polemicist, joins us to discuss Biden’s transition into the White House and Michael Flynn’s likely pardon. It's the most expensive California ballot measure of the year, and apparently the most expensive in the state's history. It is described by Ballotpedia as a citizens' initiative. Was it really a bunch of concerned citizens who forced this measure onto the ballot, after California last year passed Assembly Bill 5, which was supposed to fix this problem and force gig employers to extend benefits to staff who reasonably fit the category of “employee” rather than “contractor?” How is some of that money being spent?Ray Baker, political analyst and host of the podcast Public Agenda; and Dr. Dave Ragland, co-executive director of the Truth Telling Project and director of the Grassroots Reparations Campaign, join us to discuss the sentiments behind Tuesday's election and the division it's caused. "Voters in Republican-led Arizona and South Dakota and Democrat-led Montana and New Jersey will consider proposals to legalize recreational marijuana," CNN reported Saturday. "Another red state, Mississippi, is weighing a pair of ballot questions to legalize medical marijuana." We are really at a great dividing point in American politics. The moment Coronavirus arrived in the US it was only a matter of time before it hit prisons and detention centers. Yet, every day we learn of a new horror being done against our people detained. Every time we learn of a new atrocity, it reminds us of why we must fight to also abolish this agency: it is by design that this agency of terror continues committing all sorts of brutality and violence against the same people they claim to care for their well being while in their custody. Birx said Sunday that "the US is in a new phase in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic, saying that the deadly virus is more widespread than when it first took hold in the US earlier this year," CNN reported. How concerned should we be about what Birx is saying and that US President Donald Trump is taking issue with her saying it? "Talks between congressional Democrats and the administration over a fifth coronavirus package are entering their second week with no signs of a quick deal," The Hill reported Monday. NBC News reported on July 4, "The crippling economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic could force a wave of evictions across the United States as a federal ban and a patchwork of state moratoriums quickly expire, fair housing advocates and legal experts warned." How serious of a problem is this? "In a Monday morning tweet attacking Nevada's proposed expansion of mail-in voting as 'an illegal late night coup,' President Donald Trump once again openly admitted that increasing access to the ballot amid the COVID-19 pandemic poses a dire threat to the Republican Party's ability to win elections," Common Dreams reported Monday. What are we to make of this?"Microsoft Corp. said it will move forward with plans to buy the US operations of the hit video-sharing app TikTok, capping weeks of covert dealmaking that were almost upended by an 11th-hour intervention from President Trump," the Wall Street Journal reported Monday. Is there more to this than meets the eye? "The US and Poland have agreed to a defense deal that will lead to more American troops deployed in the central European nation, a top US diplomat said Friday," Stars & Stripes reported that same day. "The two countries have completed negotiations on a new Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement, which 'will implement the joint vision of our two presidents to enhance the US military presence in Poland,' Washington's ambassador to Poland Georgette Mosbacher wrote in a Twitter post." What is this joint vision that was mentioned in the statement, and how will that vision be perceived in other parts of the world? "When International Court of Justice (ICC) Prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, confirmed last December that the Court has ample evidence to pursue a war crimes investigation in occupied Palestine, the Israeli government responded with the usual rhetoric, accusing the international community of bias and insisting on Israel's 'right to defend itself,'" Palestine Chronicle Editor Ramzy Baroud wrote in a July 29 op-ed. He argued that beneath the rather dismissive posture of those in the Israeli government and their US backers could be grave concern. What could happen?"Given what's going on, Trump's reelection strategy has changed at a time when dire economic conditions have given presumptive [Democratic] nominee [Joe] Biden a commanding lead in national polls, some giving him a double-digit advantage," Stephen Lendman wrote in a Monday post on his website. "In an attempt to reinvigorate his flagging campaign, Trump and others surrounding him changed the subject." How so?"COVID-19 is escalating in ICE [US Immigration and Customs Enforcement] detention centers as states hit highest daily records - and ICE deportation flights into Northern Triangle continue," said the headline of a Monday news release from the International Rescue Committee. Is the US deporting COVID-19 to Mexico and Central and South America? Separating Fact From Fiction in Trump’s Immigration Policy

Crosscut Talks

President Donald Trump has made immigration a cornerstone of his political agenda. And his rhetoric, while inflaming his critics and galvanizing his base, is not always based in fact. That makes it difficult for journalists, who are attempting to report accurately on everything from migrant caravans to family separation. And for advocates and activists, there's new urgency to counter the administration's narrative. Crosscut brought a few of those perspectives together, to talk about the president's rhetoric and his administration's approach to immigration policy. Sarah Stillman of the New Yorker and Aura Bogado of Reveal discuss their groundbreaking reporting work, while Jorge Baron of the Northwest Immigrant Right Project and Maru Mora Villalpando share tales from the realm of immigrant advocacy. This conversation was recorded on May 4, 2019, at Seattle University as part of the Crosscut Festival.

Today on Sojourner Truth: The latest on Ukraine as things are heating up between Russia and the United States-backed Ukrainian government. Tensions still simmer from the vote people in the Crimea took to be annexed to Russia, with whom it has a long historical and cultural relationship. A vote that Western powers never recognized and accused Russia of illegally annexing Crimea from Ukraine. Now, both Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump are in Argentina for the G20 Summit. They were expected to have a sit down meeting. Complicating the situation is the Mueller probe. Paul Manafort, who headed the Trump campaign at some point, is said to have lied about his relationship with former Russian-backed President of Ukraine Victor Yanukovych. Yanukovych was overthrown in a U.S.-backed coup and replaced with U.S. and Western-leaning Petro Poroshenko. Our guest is Nicolai Petro, the Silvia-Chandley Professor of Peace Studies and Nonviolence at the University of Rhode Island. He was a Fulbright scholar in Ukraine in 2013-2014, and is the author of a well-received article in The Nation magazine titled "Ukraine's Pinochet Scenario." And, for our weekly Earth Watch, new threats to the Amazon Rainforest with the election of far-right president Bolsonaro to head the government in Brazil. Our guest is Christian Poirier, a senior member of Amazon Watch's team. Having coordinated the Brazil Program since 2009, Christian also led the organization's efforts to encourage a shift toward non-hydro energy alternatives in Brazil's electricity matrix. And the impact of homelessness on women and children. The fastest growing population of the homeless in LA County and across the country are mothers with their children. We're joined by Angela James, she holds a Ph.D. in Sociology, and has written on a variety of topics regarding race, inequality, and family. She is co-author, along with Donna L. Franklin, of the revised paperback edition of Ensuring Inequality: Structural Transformations of the African American Family, Oxford University Press. 2015. Two people have died in immigration detention. Maru Mora Villalpando, herself undocumented and a Mexican activist, organizer and mother, will break all of this down for us. Simultaneously, there is a hunger strike that is underway in Yarl's Wood, which is a women's detention center in the United Kingdom.
