Find Tracy on Bluesky at @haveloved.bsky.social, and hear more Tracy on this year's episodes on Pride & Prejudice (2005) and Fire Island, or our other classic Austen episodes, Emma (1996) and Sense and Sensibility. Years ago, a pair of sisters came together on Halloween to talk about Hocus Pocus. We thought the story ended there. We were wrong. Those lovable sisters are back, making magic, once again, because Disney dug up the past with Hocus Pocus 2, and like a bajilliondy people watched it, and we figured, One Way or Another, we could get some easy spooky-month downloads. Itchita kupita melaka mystika. Hocus Pocus 2 is currently streaming on Disney+. Check out our friend Jon Biegen at jinglejon.com, for all your podcast-jingle needs.

Author Mitchell Kesller joins Jaye for a meaningful conversation about his debut book, Broke the Bread, Spilled the Tea. Broke the Bread, Spilled the Tea seeks to bridge the gap between Christian faith and LGBTQ+ identity, making the case that there is much more to faith in Christ than what is often preached on Sunday mornings. This fascinating, in-depth discussion touches on the harm done to the LGBTQ+ community by the American church, apologetics, the politicization of conservative Christianity, separation of church and state, the search for a deeper understanding of God and the Bible, and more. In a public release of this bonus episode originally released on Patreon in November 2019, Jaye talks more urban legends by discussing a couple of processed food-related legends. Is McDonalds adding animal byproducts and other gross fillers to their hamburgers? Are popular meat substitutes such as Beyond Burger and the Impossible Burger "indistinguishable" from dog food? Jaye also provides a bit of historical context for Americans' distrust of corporations involved in food processing, which often drives food-related urban legends. In this episode of Potstirrer Podcast, Jaye reacts to the leaked draft US Supreme Court Opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. Written by Justice Samuel Alito, the draft majority opinion signals an overturning of the Roe v. Wade precedent regarding abortion, and would leave abortion rights up to the states. Jaye argues that Alito's reasoning in Dobbs for overturning Roe is particularly alarming, as the way Roe was decided is similar to that of several other civil rights cases handed down by the Court over the past seventy years. Using historical analysis, Jaye makes the case that overturning Roe v. Wade was always meant to be a starting point in a right-wing quest to roll back a host of civil rights and liberties, and ultimately solidify authoritarian minority rule in the United States. In this public release of a Patreon bonus episode originally released in November 2018, Jaye goes back in time to tell the story of the impeachment of President Bill Clinton in 1998, and the scandals that led up to it. Clinton - and many of his supporters - believe that he was unfairly targeted by congressional Republicans for a consensual affair with a White House intern. But was that the case? And was Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky simply a "private" matter, an example of immorality unbecoming of the commander-in-chief, or perhaps something else? In this episode, Jaye focuses on a particular argument politicians and pundits make when countries reckon with past and present incidents of national shame, which is that other countries also have shameful incidents in their histories. Jaye discusses why - although the thought experiment is intriguing - the argument itself is deflection which silences the marginalized. She contends that confronting historical and current realities, no matter how difficult or contentious, have individual and collective benefit that are worth the discomfort. In Episode 100, Jaye celebrates the milestone by taking on the topic of cancel culture. Cancel culture is praised by advocates and maligned by critics, but is often ill-defined. Jaye delves into the origin and types of cancel culture, including the deplatforming of celebrities, boycotting of companies, and shaming of private individuals, as responses to statements, policies or behaviors deemed offensive or problematic. In addition, Jaye calls attention to cancel culture through the censorship of ideas, facts, and knowledge. Censorship in the US is on the rise, including state bans on the teaching of accurate history and civics under the guise of "critical race theory," and book bans in school districts targeting works that champion diversity and tell the stories of people from marginalized communities. What is the ultimate goal of pro-censorship advocates and how do their efforts endanger democracy? This multi-episode series is about efforts to suppress or limit the vote in certain communities across the United States in order to achieve specific outcomes. In Part 3, Jaye talks about the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the voting rights timeline following the VRA being signed into law. Several methods of voter suppression, from gerrymandering to restrictive voter ID laws, criminal penalties for ballot collection, and more are discussed, as well as potential solutions. Jaye warns of the endgame for voter suppression - minority rule in the face of increased diversity in America. In this episode, Jaye discusses "The Great Resignation," the abnormally high number of American workers voluntarily walking away from work, which has been a constant trend since April 2021. Why are so many workers leaving their jobs or even careers? Jaye dispels the myth of the "lazy unemployed who don't want to work," and points out what most "quitters" are actually doing once they resign. In addition, Jaye talks about vaccine mandates instituted by the public and private sector, and reveals what is truly to blame for the difficult choice many vaccine hesitant people face between taking "the jab" or losing their source of income. This multi-episode series is about efforts to suppress or limit the vote in certain communities across the United States in order to achieve specific outcomes. In Part 2, Jaye discusses the history of voting rights in the United States based on sex from the founding until the immediate aftermath of the 19th Amendment, which prohibited the government from restricting women from the ballot box. The woman suffrage movement in the United States, as the defining issue in first wave feminism, was that of both diversity and internal conflict. Jaye discusses the intersection of sex, race and ethnicity, and socioeconomic class in the direction of the woman suffrage movement, and how events at the time led to the movement intentionally sidelining Black women in its quest for the franchise. CONTENT WARNING: The following episode includes brief discussion of physical violence and sexual assault. Listener discretion is advised. This multi-episode series is about efforts to suppress or limit the vote in certain communities across the United States in order to achieve specific outcomes. In Part 1, Jaye discusses the history of the vote in the United States as it pertains to race and ethnicity from the founding through the Jim Crow segregation period. She argues that there has always been tension between the democratic impulse to expand the electorate, and the anti-democratic desire to limit the electorate to more powerful, privileged groups. CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains discussion of homophobia and mental illness. Listener discretion is advised. In this public release of a bonus episode originally released on Patreon in August 2019, Jaye discusses the divorce announcement of Joshua Harris, the author of Christian self-help book I Kissed Dating Goodbye, and his wife, singer Shannon Bonne, and their apparent ongoing deconstruction from evangelical Christianity. Are people who hold harmful beliefs capable of change? Jaye acknowledges her own deconstruction from toxic theology, and reflects on two people who influenced her life journey and departure from evangelical Christianity. These two people, who both passed away in the summer of 2019, were instrumental in setting her on the road to becoming a better human in both heart and mind. The Atlanta spa shootings on March 16, 2021 were one of many large-scale shooting incidents that occurred after a lull in mass gun violence due to the pandemic. But this spree shooting stuck out due to the various issues the tragedy touched on, including gun control and the Second Amendment, stereotyping and discrimination against Asian people, racialized misogyny, policing biases, and toxic teachings within evangelical Christianity. Jaye discusses each of these issues in light of this incident, centering the victims and making the case for an intersectional approach to such horrifying events. It is the middle of President Joe Biden's first 100 days in office, and his administration has been hard at work attempting to end the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, as well as other policy priorities. But actions on immigration-related policy, as it relates to a shift in direction from Donald Trump, have been more modest. Jaye discusses Biden's ending of the Muslim Travel Ban and the lifting of restrictions for allowing unaccompanied minors into the US, among other immigration policies. Has Biden gone far enough to reverse Trump-era immigration policies, or is his centrism getting in the way of doing more? How could seemingly normal Americans end up becoming right-wing extremists? Jaye discusses the role of extremist Christianity as a gateway to radical right-wing movements. The year 2021 has begun in the United States with a tragic attack on democracy. On January 6, pro-Trump rioters who were taking part in a protest stormed the US Capitol Building in Washington DC, during a joint session of Congress held to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election. The Capitol attack, incited by the rhetoric of Donald Trump and other Republican politicians, led to the deaths of five people, including a Capitol police officer who was murdered by rioters. It has led to many questions about possible Trumpist infiltration of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, racial and political bias in how we view the act of protest, the health of American democracy, and many more. Ervin Johnson II, cofounder of Shining Otaku Comics, joins Jaye to discuss the Capitol Riots and the surrounding issues, as well as what happens next - both to Donald Trump and to America. This informal conversation also includes some levity - as sometimes we need to laugh to keep from crying. *Correction: Rev. These are influential Americans, dead or alive, who made a negative contribution to their sphere of influence during their lifetime. The 2020 US general election has taken place, and after days of counting in several swing states, former Vice-President Joe Biden has won the election decisively over Donald Trump. However, the expected gains for Democrats in Congress - the "blue wave" - were not realized. Why did this result occur? Jaye details what she believes is the real reason why centrist Democrats are blaming progressives and black activists for the unmet expectations in Congress. Meanwhile, Trump has yet to concede the presidential election to Biden, and has pushed the courts and state legislatures to set aside the election results in favor of gifting him a second term, citing "fraud" that has yet to be proven in a court of law. Are Trump's efforts a sign of a soft coup, or a grift? And should Americans be concerned about democracy, even as it appears Trump is failing in his efforts? The 2020 US general election is coming up, and it's time to get ready! Jaye discusses political polling - including why the 2016 presidential poll predictions were not as much of a failure as it has been reported in the press. Will 2020 be a repeat of 2016? Also, Jaye discusses the current landscape and provides guidance in case of a Donald Trump victory or should Joe Biden win the election. In the runup to the 2020 US general election, many events have occurred on local, state and federal levels that point to an authoritarian slide for the United States. Jaye discusses some of these events, including the presidential and vice-presidential debates, the plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, the Kentucky grand jury decision in the Breonna Taylor case, Donald Trump's ban of "critical race theory" in public schools, and the rushed efforts to confirm staunch conservative Amy Coney Barrett to the US Supreme Court in advance of the election. Focusing on the example set by the Christian Right, Jaye makes the case for progressives voting for Joe Biden in this election, and warns that on this year's ballot is the fate of this democratic republic. CONTENT WARNING: The following episode involves discussion of crime, police brutality and bigotry, including physical violence, murder, and racism. Listener discretion is advised. In this commentary episode, Jaye shares her reaction to the events during the week of the 2020 Republican National Convention, including the shooting of Jacob Blake Jr. by police, and the shooting at the resulting Kenosha, WI protests, allegedly perpetrated by Kyle Rittenhouse. How did the police approach each of these incidents, and what do the differences say about the nature of police brutality and the police state in America? Jaye makes the case that the way the police, the Republican Party, and many right-wing voices discuss the terrorist attack committed at the Kenosha protests should give every American, regardless of race or ideology, pause. CONTENT WARNING: The following episode includes discussion of physical and sexual abuse, including the abuse of children. Listener discretion is advised. In this flashback bonus episode first released as a Patreon bonus episode in August 2018 originally entitled "Abuse: Endorsed by Scripture?," Jaye discusses the use of Romans 13:1-5, a passage in the Bible invoked by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the White House Press Secretary at the time, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, to justify the separation and detainment of families seeking asylum at the US-Mexico border. What does this Bible passage really mean - in a historical and contemporary context - if Sessions and Sanders are correct? Jaye outlines the danger of using religious passages to justify oppressive government actions. This episode also includes fresh new commentary that frames this episode in the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic and Black Lives Matter protests. In the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd at the hands of police, and the resulting Black Lives Matter uprisings and protests, there has been an ongoing national conversation regarding police brutality and race. She also outlines some possible solutions that are intended to make all communities safer, from police reforms such as increased accountability and demilitarization, to police restructuring such as defunding the police and abolishing police. In the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd at the hands of police, and the resulting Black Lives Matter uprisings and protests, there has been an ongoing national conversation regarding police brutality and race. In Part 1 of a two-episode series, Jaye contends that to discuss police brutality in an honest way, we must discuss policing in America. What are some common hurdles to discussing the issue, and what are some important facts in regards to policing and race? Jaye also delves into the history of US policing, including why modern police departments were developed. Is the system truly broken, or working as intended? In the public release of February 2019's Patreon bonus episode, Jaye discusses the news story from January 2019 about the confrontation in Washington DC, between Catholic high school students from Northern Kentucky and a Native American elder. How does a seemingly straightforward news story, complete with video, morph into a controversy dividing society along the familiar lines of partisanship and race? Jaye happens to live in the same metropolitan area the school is located, and she gives her unique insight on the events and underlying issues, as well as the symbolism of the Make America Great Again hats worn by the students. For the public release, Jaye also provides an update of the incident, and reframes it in light of Black Lives Matter and America's current reckoning with its treatment of black and indigenous people of color (BIPOC). In the public release of the September 2019 Patreon Exclusive, Jaye discusses Donald Trump's "disloyalty" comments regarding Jewish Democrats. Why would Trump rely on an anti-Semitic trope while stating he is an ardent supporter of Israel? Jaye also outlines reasons why white evangelicals, who are overwhelmingly loyal to Donald Trump, are also ardent supporters of the state of Israel. How do their politics in regards to Israel mesh with their support of a president who tacitly gives cover to anti-Semitic white supremacists? Several regions around the globe have been battling the scourge of a novel coronavirus, a highly contagious virus that leads to an illness the World Health Organization has named COVID-19. The virus leads to mild symptoms, or even no symptoms, in most people, but can lead to serious complications in a small but significant percentage of people, in some cases leading to death. COVID-19 has arrived in an real way in the United States, with tens of thousands officially confirmed positive for coronavirus, and hundreds of deaths. Jaye reviews a brief timeline of the pandemic and the response of Donald Trump to the coronavirus threat in the US. Also, Jaye argues that the COVID-19 pandemic will significantly change America, and discusses a few possible futures, including reason for hope among the current wave of fear, uncertainty, darkness and despair.
