What you are most capable of giving is the very same thing that you need the most. Sure, everyone sees you as the happiest, the most loving, the most humorous they can get to be around with, but deep inside, you are a disaster. In this episode, meet Heather, a Hypnosis for permanent weight loss graduate who works in talent development and human resources. As she said jokingly, her job is making sure people enjoy going to work every day. Otherwise, she would be having a bad day. For as long as she can remember, her life has been a constant on and off diet setup. As she looks back, she's always filled her time with work as she always wants something to occupy her mind. She always has this idea that getting work, having one full-time job and three other part-time ones, is proving her worth. Yes, she enjoys time with friends, having a good laugh with them, but deep inside, she's a wreck. She ends up sleeping her worries away overnight and wakes up hungover the next day and still facing the same issues she couldn't care to give attention to and deal with herself. At home, she is someone who has this 'I got it' thing, who's in charge of everything, and any offer of help from family members is just put aside.  She never realized until she joined Hypnosis that the very thing she's projecting are the same things she needs the most. That's why she spends tons of money going to the doctor and maintaining more than one medicine that has not given her relief regarding her stomach issues.  Not until she puts herself in the program that she realizes she deserves to be on the receiving end of help. She keeps looking for validation from others when only she can give it herself.  She has seen progress on this journey, and what used to be a day of taking seven medicines turned to only one, and how she feels better with only that and not complaining about stomach pains. Heather’s story, bringing Hayden into the world, a pregnancy announcement, and a whole lot more. Meet Heather, a long time Instagram friend, so much so I feel like I knew her story inside out. Heather's story is layered and unusual. A birth that left her needing to use a cane to walk for a long while. She was later diagnosed with a condition called Femoral/Peroneal/Sciatic Nerve Damage from Labor/Delivery. This story isn’t here to scare. In fact, what happened to Heather was so incredibly rare. This podcast's purpose is and always has been to hold space for the truth through the eye of the storyteller/mother that lived it. She left the episode saying that the women she met on Facebook who globally supported her were like angels. There really is nothing like a group of women to lift each other up and see them through a tough time. Thanks, Heather, for being so open and so real. It was cos lovely to finally chat in realtime with Hayden in the background and all. Such a true representation of parents' reality in 2020 trying to make do and get on with kids home. This week I am so grateful to have Heather Larson on the show. I first met Heather on social media actually which I feel like is a funny place to meet friends but - never the less I am happy that we connected this way. I had been looking for some inspiration for a more plant based lifestyle and wasn’t sure what that might look like with a new baby and once she started eating solid foods. I searched around and came across her instagram and then checked out her web page and found it really helpful to read her blogs and stories. We started messaging and became friends while traveling this sometimes bumpy road of motherhood.  Heather has been through some of the most difficult things that the human spirit should ever have to endure. The loss of her first child has played a monumental role in how she lives life today. Her grit, resilience and quite frankly her sense of humor are so inspiring that I feel so grateful to have made this connection with this wonderful human being. Heather, having a background in disabilities, realized that Minnesota was under represented in the Disability Rights Lawyer field. She decided to take on a second career and got her license and went to work, forming her own firm, Gilbert Law. The United Blind of Minnesota was in search of a Disabilities Rights Advocate and Heather came on board and now advocates for Minnesota residents who are Blind/Visually Impaired through the mission of the United Blind. Heather joins Jeff Thompson from Blind Abilities and talks about discrimination and how she approaches cases to get to the bottom of the problem. Whether it be a violation of the ADA or it may be just a misunderstanding, Heather works with both parties to get a solution. Hopefully, it is a misunderstanding, and if it is more than that, Heather is there for you. Meet Heather Oglesby , one of our five Family Caregiver of the Year award winners. Heather and the other four winners will be honored during a reception on the evening of November 8 at the Third Annual National Caregiving Conference. Heather is a 45-year old woman who is currently caring for her mother with Alzheimer's. Along with being a caregiver, she works full time for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Prior to becoming a caregiver for her mother, Heather traveled the world serving in multiple voluntary roles in Africa, Romania, and Egypt. At age 40, Heather began noticing something different with her mother. She began asking for money to pay the same bills, over and over again. Her mom would come to visit her and get lost, even though she had visited many times. Her mom appeared disheveled and confused most of the time, but at age 60, Heather just attributed her mom's behavior to getting older. Heather moved over 800 miles away from her mother to take a job in Atlanta, Georgia. As the symptoms worsened, Heather's mom could not verbalize over the phone what was happening in her life. The only words her mother could utter was that she was evicted and sleeping in her car. Heather's mom ended up in a women's shelter due to complications associated with Alzheimer's at the age of 64.
