Josh Howell, LEI President, Mark Reich, LEI Chief Engineer Strategy, and Art Smalley discuss the four basic types of problem-solving. Art is a well-known expert in leadership, management, and the Toyota Way. He worked at Toyota Motor Corp. in Japan; helped to transform Donnelly Corp. in Michigan; was a consultant with McKinsey & Co.; and has authored several award-winning books, including Four Types of Problems.   The trio set out to discuss how the framework of the four types of problems maps onto the lean management system explained in Mark's recent book about hoshin kanri, Managing on Purpose, as well as daily management in Toyota, leadership, culture, and other related topics. The systematic intersection of these topics is a complex subject beyond just the simpler notion of “tools.” Art and Mark share respective viewpoints from their time at Toyota in Japan and what made the system so unique while trying to connect the dots of four types of problems, hoshin kanri, and other areas.  Josh kicks off the podcast by asking Art and Mark to examine in detail troubleshooting — the most frequent and possibly most misunderstood type of problem-solving. A good troubleshooting environment involves quickly attacking known problems with known solutions to get operations back to normal (i.e., how to mitigate issues that prevent achievement of near-term goals). Summer planning round 3, ding ding ding. I share a lot of my life because I am part of the Organize 365® brand. I've been podcasting for over 12 years and over that time I have shared a lot about me, my life, and my family. Recently I shared how I wanted to spend the next 120 days upleveling the upstairs of my house. Those plans changed when Abby decided to have back surgery. And once again those plans have changed. And when evaluating my boundaries, I asked to share some news on this podcast I'd been withholding to explain why all the changes. My personal life A year or two ago I started practicing boundaries. My family has never been upset with anything that I shared but I started thinking they are adults and it's their news to share when there's news. I don't need to share everything. And a year ago I decided to stop sharing vacation/trips with social media and on the app. But then I wanted to share something while I was on a trip and I questioned my boundaries. I've decided I have boundaries in place but when I want to share something I will even if it goes against those boundaries. My boundaries are flexible. Unexpected golden window When Abby's back surgery got cancelled, I removed the “When Abby has back surgery” google calendar and my calendar was bare! I'd dedicated about 80% of my upcoming time to take care of Grayson and Abby. Now what did I want to do in this unexpected golden window? People often ask “I have so much to do, but when I have a pocket of time, I don't know what to do first.” I say all you need to do is just pick. I had lots of options when that time opened up on my calendar. I decided I want to make the PhD a priority. You see, Abby had to do some pre-operation bloodwork that revealed she's expecting. Yes!! Hence the surgery is off. This discovery led to a cascade of changes for the next 120 days. The second thing I decided I wanted to do was revisiting creating an office upstairs in our house. And I created a little bedroom upstairs for Grayson like I'd mentioned before so our house is ready for this next phase of life.  Wanna know how I'm gonna spend the rest of this time?  Italy, a Wedding, and a Baby Knowing the baby is coming in December, I want to plan our Italy trip for this fall. It's been cancelled a few times, and I want to go before Abby needs us with baby #2. More news I've been keeping private is that Abby is engaged and they're getting married in the Spring of 2026, so we definitely need to squeeze this trip in. Pray for me as I plan this wedding. LOL So travel, travel is the other thing I want to do for this 120 days. By the time you listen to this episode I will have just come back from Michigan. Greg and Joey are headed to the Keys. When we head to FL I'm taking Grayson to Disney (secretly hoping it becomes our little tradition.) I'm taking an adult field trip to VA. And I'll be planning this Italian trip for the fall that we've talked about taking forever! So I have a few things keeping me busy.  I will not be creating any courses or Sunday Baskets® for weddings, vacationing, or any other courses based on the events currently in my life. I'm not a public figure that is going to try to be an expert in everything I do. When I created Organize 365® I chose a subject I was an expert in and a subject that I wanted to talk and teach about until I was at least 80. In the latest episode of Working People, we go back to the picket line to get a critical update on the longest ongoing strike in the United States. In October 2022, over 100 workers represented by five labor unions—including production, distribution, advertising, and accounts receivable staff—walked off the job on an unfair labor practice strike at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (PPG). The strike began after the newspaper's management, Block Communications, which is owned by the Block family, cut off health insurance for employees on Oct. 1 of that year. After more than 2.5 years on strike, with other unions reaching contracts or taking buyouts and dissolving their units, workers represented by the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh are the last remaining strikers holding the line. We speak with a panel of union officers for the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh about how they've managed to stay on strike so long and about recent legal updates that have given them hope that an acceptable end to the strike may be on the horizon. Things Discussed: On early: Talkin Detroit Tigers. How this went down: Yax started with college as a fallback, Michigan visit shifted things. NBA side of it stayed—if anything the measurements at the Combine improved his NBA stock. But Michigan convinced him. Laid out the red carpet. Coaches went to the Combine to support him. Did we out-recruit the NBA? Yes, because the NBA wasn't recruiting him, and we are very good at recruiting. Good sign for the future: Dusty May knows how to convince a fringe NBA guy to come back to college. Going to have an advantage when they're the competition because we're always going to want these players more than the NBA for the same money. What does this do? Cross between Danny Wolf and Johni Broome. Danny measured 6'10.5, but Yaxel is 6'9", much better about turnovers, much better free throw shooter, better face-up guy, close to that level of defender. Team: Cadeau and Yaxel are your creators, need Cason to be a breakdown threat, need Gayle and Nimari to be your finishers, and then center is Johnson's defensive presence. Big Ten next year: Purdue is still #1, they are going to have a 7'3" guy from Belgium so they don't die whenever TKR gets in foul trouble. Michigan is in that tier with them. Proven shooting on this roster? Uh, Tschetter? Need three or four of Cason/Gayle/McKenney/Burnett/Grady to be that. Minutes? Cadeau most of them at the point with Cason taking some. McKenny backup up Gayle and Nimari at the SG spots, Tschetter backing up Lendeborg, Johnson/Mara at center. Upside: Team is all about creation: Cadeau, Lendeborg are creators, Gayle and Cason are secondary creators, McKenney has that upside. Rotation: 8+2 like Dusty likes. Think they'll work in the freshmen some but Goodman probably redshirts unless there's an injury, Grady gets maybe 10% of minutes as a spacer depending on how the others are shooting, Trey develops into a major part of the rotation by season's end but needs time to adjust. Defensively this team will be a nightmare to play against.

The conversation then turns to Ryan Clark's commentary on RG3 and whether it was out of line for mentioning his wife's race as a factor in his lack of perspective on issues affecting black women.
