On September 15, 1945, Anton Webern was shot by an American occupation soldier in alleged self-defense in Mittersill, where he had taken refuge from the approaching Red Army. Thus ended the life of one of the most influential composers of the modern era in an inconceivable and tragic way. 60 years later - on September 15, 2005 - two commemorative events for Anton Webern will take place within the framework of the 10th Composers' Forum Mittersill: for an event in public space, Karlheinz Essl has created the algorithmic sound installation WebernUhrWerk for computer-controlled Carillon. For the subsequent commemorative concert in St. Anna's Church, he wrote WebernSpielWerk for Toy Piano, which is a kind of projection of the Carillon music onto a toy piano. The pervasive character of the carillon, which filled the whole place in the afternoon, is reduced to the "poor" sound world of a toy piano, whose sound produced by struck metal rods resembles that of a bell - but is much more restrained and intimate. This composition was written in the last days of August 2005 and is dedicated to Isabel Ettenauer, who premiered this work on September 15, 2005. It consists of four movements: I. espressivo – mit einem gewissen sprechenden Ausdruck II. molto rubato III. Gemessenen Schritts (wie Totenglocken) IV. sehr frei – molto intenso https://www.essl.at/works/webernspielwerk.html

Binaural production - listen with headphones to enjoy the 3D sound! Soundscape by Karlheinz Essl, poem by Erwin Uhrmann. A track from the audio book K.O.P.F.

Pete explains how his good friend Cliff Stocker liked Petes song 'long time gone', Pete tells how Cliff and his band 'Slack Alice' recorded their own version of the song utilising only two of the 4 or more verses. The drummer in the band Liam Barber had played with Pete in various bands that Pete had put together over the years. Liam went on to play in Petes band for a special BBC event for the County of Lancashire where Pete would typically decide what song to play next, the BBC event was supposed to be 40 minutes, it went down so well the band played for 2.5 hrs! Liam had described playing drums for Pete was a baptism of fire! Another local musician in the north of England a certain Andy Nutter joined the Band for the BBC event on Congas, he was a one man show in himself. Pete talked about the fact he had so many songs of differing styles, that he could play for up to 6 or 8 hours never repeating a song. On one or more occasions Pete was required to play for an open air summer festivity in Mittersill at his base Pletzers Cafe https://www.konditoreipletzer.at/ with many hundreds of people milling out the front of the premises being entertained by Pete whilst sitting and enjoying the sun consuming Pletzers cold drinks, icecreams and cakes, Pete explains how a planned 4 hours playing turned into a marathon 8 hrs! During one of Petes outside Pletzer performences in Mittersill, a young lady came up to Pete asking whether he could play a Townes Van Zandt song https://youtu.be/j54Yk3xSYx4 for her father a former Mittersill resident now based in Houston Texas, Pete being influenced by what was going on in America it didnt take long to discover and play Van Zandts great music one of Petes favorite artists. The final section of the Podcast dwells on the adventures and people Pete met whilst in the USA for a period of three months. Pete was based for a period of time in Willits California https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willits,_California where he was a guest at Bill Meyerhoff's ranch where Pete had been given use of a ranch cabin by helping the Meyerhoff family with certain duties on the ranch. During one of his several visits to the USA, Pete had driven to the Smoky Mountains in Tennesee and had met some ethnic country blue grass musicians and had even sat in on one of their sessions to sing and play guitar. Most people are intrigued by Petes Yorkshire accent wherever he happens to be, these people in Tennesee and Willits California were no exception! These were members of the Willy Nelson Band https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_(Willie_Nelson%27s_band) who Pete had met at Kinocti Lake in California, one of the band who Pete briefly chatted to was Michael Raphael the Harmonica Player, Willy Nelson himself was never present. Whilst in Willits on his initial visit to the town, Pete had net someone who invited him over to a house opposite Andy's bar where a recording studio was based, Pete saw a lovely Fender Stratocaster on a stand and asked who the guitar belonged to, it belonged to Gene Parson's a former member of the Pop group the Byrd's who Pete then met. Pete explained to Gene where he came from and where he was staying in Willit's, Gene immediately knew who the people were, and even knew the man that Pete had met on his first visit to Willits a certain Lloyd Gullick https://www.newspapers.com/clip/34485439/lloyd-gullick-obituary/ Gene knew everyone it seemed, in fact he was to tell Pete that his father used to drive cattle down from Oregon to California via the Drover's roads with non other than Lloyd Gullick a local rancher and Cowboy! Whilst at the Meyerhoff ranch Pete was asked by Bill if he'd like to join him in a long drive into the mountains to collect two wrought iron gates that somebody had sold to Bill, the owner of the gates made of Bronze was non other than actor Steven Seagal Bill had had no idea who he was, and Pete only realised who it was when they got back to Meyerhoff's ranch! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bernie-aird/message
Pete tells us his period in life where he would spend time in Scotland, solo performences or duets, socialising and music making with Hamish Imlach, Danny Kyle, Tam Harvey and Josh McRae and even Billy Connolly! How these people would make funny lyrics out of a popular song, how Bill Mcintyre was made fun of in a rendition of McCartney's Mull of Kintyre. Very often a certain Maggie Bell would also attend these social gatherings in a popular pub where people were getting slowly under the influence of drink. Pete Gardner decided also to put his own funny lyrics to both Johnny Cash's 'St Quentin' & 'Ring of fire' all about the after effects of eating vindeloo curries after a gig! Pete Gardner was a regular visitor to Scotland driving his truck from Barnoldswick to collect tonnes of Denim to be delivered to places such as Leicester and London. Pete tells us of his longest ever stay in Austria due to being given the job of solo performing to a public in the Mozart platz in Salzburg, an Austrian emtrepeuner was responsible for organising the Public viewing and all pre and Post match ceromonies for the Euro football championships jointly staged by Austria and Switzerland in 2008. Pete played every night for 30 nights in a row to audiences of up to 2,000 people. Pete talks about his good friend and musician Cliff Stocker who had unexpectadly died after a routine surgery had gone wrong, Cliff was always on the prowl for good lyrics to songs, a strength that Pete gardner had in abundance. Cliff had told Pete he should record his songs as he felt they had great potential, up to that point Pete was'nt interested in the hassle of recording studios, but following the death of his friend Cliff, Pete decided to finish off many songs and song ideas he had and recorded them at home as videos now available on 'Pete gardners music page' on facebook. https://www.facebook.com/Peter-Gardner-Music-page-917768181625253/ https:// Pete talks about inspiration to write good lines,he'd even get up in the middle of the night to write something down rather than forget it in the morning. Pete talks about his regular trips to Austria to perform and his favorite base of Mittersill, how in recent years his ability to play guitar was hampered by his carpal tunnel syndrome affecting to hands and fingers. Pete wrote a song called 'Long time gone' about his friend Erich Pletzer who ran the Cafe and Konditorei in Mittersill. The market village of Mittersill with a population of 6,000 had been upgraded to a town in 2008, Pete Gardner wrote a song titled 'Mittersill Forever' available on Youtube https://youtu.be/oe9-AjxNeD4 which became a minor hit on the internet. Pete talks about his style of writing songs being greatly influenced by the American artists he had long admired. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bernie-aird/message
Pete tells us of the thriving Glasgow pub scene with musicians, artists and comedians including where on his Scottish truck driving trips to collect tonnes of Denim at his brothers factory, he'd mixed and socialised with artists such as Hamish Himlach, Danny Kyle, Tom Harvey and Josh Mcrae, not to mention Billy Connolly and his Humblebums and the occasional visit of a certain Maggie Bell. It was in this company that Pete developed an interest in writing humourous lyric's not surprisingly! In Petes performence reportoir, he had written a fine rendition of Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire, this after a Vindeloo Curry night it appears. Pete talks about his many visits to Austria to perform solo on guitar, vocals and Harmonica, his biggest contractual obligation was to perform daily for 30 days during the Euefa European Soccer tournament hosted by Austria and Switzerland in 2008. This saw Pete perform in the centre of the city of Salzburg in Mozart Platz freuquently to audiences of 2,000 spectators. Pete's songwriting relied largely on his penchant for writing interesting and creative lyrics, this frequently came to the attention of his good friend and musician Cliff Stocker who would know when Pete returned from his annual stint in Austria, that he'd have a coffer full of lyrics and song ideas which might suit what Cliff had in mind. In this Episode we hear Pete perform three of his song's ' Long time Gone', 'Mittersill Forever' and 'Harry and Juliet'. Long time Gone was written for Mittersill's Erich Pletzer who traditional employed Pete to perform at his roadside Konditorei and Cafe after his short term stay in the Kramkenhaus. Harry and Juliet about his good friends and Bikers, finally Mittersill Forever about the market village becoming a fully fledged town some years ago. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bernie-aird/message
80 year old Pete Gardner is from Barnoldswick in Yorkshire England, a Yorkshireman through and through! Pete had his challenges throughout his life and found that the strict upbringing and expectations of him from his father in particular, made for a tempestuous relationship in his younger years the effect of which made Pete a rather aggressive person using his natural strength to deal with some people that he felt were confronting him. Pete was a very industrious worker in all he took on, eventually investing in wagons/lorries/trucks and setting up his own successful transport company where he employed several drivers and mechanics. During the 50's and 60's he became enamoured by the music scene and quickly learned to play guitar to compliment his already strong voice particularly suited to country music but not limited to this. Music had a theraputic effect on Pete, he no longer was looking for a fight and channelled his energies into his music, and even song writing. See his songs on facebook. https://www.facebook.com/Peter-Gardner-Music-page-917768181625253/ Once Pete had decided he had had enough of the transport business , he successfully sold the business and decided to retire, following a 3 month spell travelling in America, he started to visit Austria in 1980 and found he could easily get work as a solo performer. His chosen base was a town named Mittersill where he had regular engagements in both summer, and winter seasons returning on an annual basis until recent years. The town of Mittersill had become a town proper some 10 years ago, Pete promptly wrote a song about this called ' Mittersill Forever' https://youtu.be/oe9-AjxNeD4 which became a minor hit on the internet and can still be found on facebook and youtube as we speak. Although dogged with occasional ailments and serious health problems in the past, Pete is remarkably energetic and still has no problem jumping into his car and heading for Scotland to visit friends, but in particular, to Austria where he has made many friends over the years. Some 15 years ago or so, as a Mittersill resident since 2002, I was introduced to Pete by our mutual friend Eric Pletzer proprietor of Mittersill's Konditerei Pletzer www.konditoreipletzer.at , Eric knew I was a keen musician and generally a creative and sometimes crazy tourism guy, Pete and I hit it off reasonably well, we didnt just have a passion for music, but mostly, we loved that great British humour! My working role in Austria has always been in the travel and tourism side of things. Last but not least, apart from his strong Yorkshire accent, Pete is a constant joke teller, any subject you care to mention, he'll make you laugh, this as well as his music making has become his trait, he has well and truly left the aggression behind, at least I think he has? All the best to you Pete! Bernie Audio recorded in Mittersill Austria on the 16th, 17th & 18th September 2020. Incidental background music performed by Pete Gardner & Johnny Cash. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bernie-aird/message
The Storm Skiing Podcast is now sponsored by Mountain Gazette. The first issue drops in November, and you can get 10 percent off subscriptions with the code “GOHIGHER10” at check-out. Get 10 percent off everything else with the code “EASTCOAST.”Who: John DeVivo, General Manager of Cannon Mountain, New Hampshire Recorded on: October 6, 2020Why I interviewed him: Because the first time I skied New Hampshire, I skied Cannon, and I skied Cannon first because everything I’d ever read about New Hampshire skiing led me to believe that this was the state’s brawling alpha dog of lift-served skiing. And it is. In a state stuffed with very good ski areas, this is the very goodest for that particular sort of skier that cares about terrain first and everything else 204th. And yet, while Cannon (intentionally) isn’t the corduroy kingdom that Bretton Woods or Waterville Valley is, it has evolved over DeVivo’s 13-year tenure into a modern ski area, with an up-to-date snowmaking plant and ever-improving facilities. I wanted to talk to the guy who has kept Cannon as classic burly Cannon while shepherding the place into the modern era, guided Mittersill from abandoned hulk to vital part of the resort, and led the mountain through the Covid shutdown and beyond. An aerial view of Cannon. That’s Interstate 93 hugging the mountain on the left, and Mittersill on the right. Photo courtesy of Indy Pass. What we talked about: Why Cannon stayed open in March after most of the rest of the Northeast turned the lights off; what finally pushed them to close; what happens when you’re suddenly the place to be and it’s the last thing that you want; how much snow fell on Cannon post-shutdown; how Cannon ops will look different in this Covid-disoriented ski season; whether the mountain will limit capacity or require reservations; New Hampshire’s Covid-era ski area protocols; what happens if you make a ski reservation and then get sick?; whether the tram will run and what will influence that decision; why the tram may matter less at Cannon than it does at other ski areas; how chairlift operations may look different; the big new Something Cool coming to Mittersill, probably for the 2021-22 ski season; the Mittersill reclamation project; what the State of New Hampshire traded with the federal government to take over the abandoned ski area; the obstacles that Cannon needed to overcome to make the expansion happen; the evolution of Mittersill over the past decade and why it’s now cut with a broad race slope; an argument for developing that land more than the radsters would maybe like; whether Mittersill will change more in the future, including if the area has outgrown the double; what the Franconia Ski Club is and why they’re essential to the operation of Cannon; why the Mittersill chair is the “most expensive double chair in the history of mankind”; why higher-capacity lifts aren’t always better; Cannon’s pass refund and deferral options for the 2020-21 ski season; why the mountain didn’t provide any kind of pass credit for last season’s passholders; how skiers reacted to that decision; why the White Mountain Super Pass makes sense for Cannon and how the pass works from a sales point of view; the New Hampshire ski area that may join the pass in the future; why Cannon joined the Indy Pass and why they didn’t withdraw when Covid strafed the Northeast and made capacity limits automatic for large ski areas; hey everyone reading this most people aren’t skiers and are surprised to learn they do this whole snowskiing thing up there at this Cannon Mountain place; how the mountain handled the dead-of-winter tram evacuation of 2016; who was stuck on the upbound tram car and what they texted John; the condition of and future plans for Cannon’s lift fleet; when the tram may be updated and what may change; why the summit lift at Attitash (not a typo) is a triple and is likely to remain a triple; why there won’t be a lift up over The Saddle at Cannon; glades because if you crack my head open it’s just cartoons of me skiing tree runs; why Cannon isn’t going to go full Killington and just say everything boundary-to-boundary is part of the ski area; the unnamed and unmarked lines where you may find some gnarly out-of-bounds but wink-wink-go-crush-it terrain; Cannon’s long-term snowmaking plan and why they’ll never go for 100 percent coverage. The Tram, not stuck in place. The original tram opened in 1938, and the current iteration dates to 1979. Photo courtesy of Indy Pass. Why I thought that now was a good time for this interview: Because Cannon was one of the last four mountains in the Northeast – along with Waterville Valley, Bretton Woods, and Gunstock – to close when Covid moved over the Northeast like an eclipse in March, and I wanted to understand why the mountain made the decision to stay open. The ski area is also a member of the White Mountain Super Pass and became the de facto East Coast Indy Pass headliner when it joined the coalition in May, and since I’m obsessed with multipasses I thought we’d dig into those a bit. I also wanted to get a better understanding of how the Mittersill expansion has evolved from a natural-snow, winding old-New England backcountry-ish area to a semi-tamed but still-half-wild pod striped with a broad racing slope. Why you should go there: Because with the Front Five and DJ’s Tramline and marked and unmarked glades all over and a rambling breadth that awards exploration, Cannon is the top skier’s mountain in New Hampshire. Unless it’s Wildcat. But Cannon is larger and easier to get to and not part of the Epic Pass Bundle that is likely to transform all Included Mountains over the course of the next several Epic Quarters. From a skier’s point of view, New Hampshire can be hard to sort out. It doesn’t have a handful of dominant ski areas like Maine or a half dozen truly huge ones like Vermont. What it has instead is 15 or so medium-to-largish mountains that have all sunk over the decades into their particular skier’s niche. And Cannon’s niche is hardass bruiser with some endless gnarly runs spiraling off the summit, through the glades, and down the pitch toward Echo Lake. It has everything else you could want, of course, including terrific areas for beginners and racers cut across its sprawl. It’s also home to one of the largest expansions in the Northeast over the past decade, as the formerly abandoned Mittersill ski area next door has been officially absorbed into the trailmap. And it has the tram, the only one in the state and one of only two in Northeast skiing, a novelty that is also one of the resort’s most defining features. And besides all that it’s easy to get to, towering over I-93 as you move south toward the Notch, materializing like a bucolic wintry landscape painting from the snowy days of yore. And if you hit it just right, this could be you:A bomber day at Cannon. It looks like the greatest thing in the world because it is. Photo courtesy of Indy Pass.Questions I wish I’d asked: As usual I ran out of time before I could get to everything. I really wanted to talk about the mountain’s Civilian Conservation Corps legacy and the pros and cons of state ownership. I’d hoped to get a bit into how New Hampshire leased out Mount Sunapee (now managed by Vail), in the late ‘90s but kept Cannon, and whether that was the right model for the ski area. I also wanted to talk about John’s commitment to building a more inclusive leadership team. What I got wrong: Back in February 2016, Cannon’s tram broke down at the tail end of a freezing Valentine’s Sunday. John and I spent a few minutes talking about how the mountain managed that, but I incorrectly stated that the date of the breakdown was December 2016. The correct date was clearly stated in the Ski article that I used as my primary source, but I skimmed the dateline at the top and mis-read the date. A Cannon trailmap from 1943, pre-interstate, pre-shaped ski, pre-high-speed lifts, and Goddamnit son pre-all this malarky about fake snow and four-wheel drive. Why, our cars didn’t even have tires! We just rode around on empty rims. But seriously how crazy is it to see how many little ropetow operations were just bumping up from every little town?Additional note I have to make because the world is filled with morons: So when John and I are discussing the tram evacuation, he relates that congresswoman Ann Kuster had been on the lift just before it stalled out, and says he was relieved she didn’t end up stuck in there because the conspiracy crowd would think that the mountain was trying to “kidnap her.” I want to be absolutely clear that this exchange occurred a full two days before news broke that a group of idiots in my home state of Michigan had been plotting for months to kidnap Governor Gretchen Whitmer, meaning the joke was just a joke like, “Hey what if you went to the grocery store and you got to the checkout and the checkout person wasn’t a person but a walrus - Isn’t that funny because it’s an absurd thing that couldn’t possibly happen?” and not an attempt to make light of a serious crime. And I’m saying all this because somehow we now live in a cartoon world where stupid s**t like that happens every day and none of us can believe it but somehow enough people believe it to keep doing these things.
