Mark Drummond produces original groove and chill jazz music. A guitarist and producer with a funky, soulful approach to smooth jazz and R&B, his music is available worldwide. His latest release, Morning Sunrise, co-written and produced with So CA producer/writer James Carloss, puts Mark's nylon string work front and center with tasty runs and harmonized riffs, morphing into classic fusion complete with Santana-ish flourishes by track's end. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/daniel-a-nelson/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/daniel-a-nelson/support
Jam Notes: Our yearly gig for the Duke Orthopaedic department holiday party. This is the best set list and the best put-together we have been, musically, in all the years we have been doing it. We really got organized on the set list and on the arrangements this year. Everybody played really well and there were really only one or two major mistakes. As usual, Ben had issues with his Zoom H4n batteries and so we only got part of the first set and started recording partway through the second set as well. Some of the songs are also partial recordings because the Zoom H4n ran out of batteries. Jam Notes: " "

In this episode, I share an experience I had to arise earlier in the morning and the gift that God gave me the next morning at sunrise! I share the importance of creating our morning and evening routines. Those routines actually start in the evening to be prepared for the next day. Our lives are measured by days with the average person living 27,375 days. No matter what happens during the day, if we are intentionally bookending our days, we can stay aligned. That early morning hour is a time of great connection and understanding. Are we willing to be open to all the Lord has and wants to give us? I love the quote from CS Lewis stating: “It would seem that our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased." In this episode, I share about the Miracle Morning - Life S.A.V.E.R.S. by Hal Elrod. Are you ready to rest, rejuvenate, and re-invent your life? In the first story, Morning Sunrise has to figure out which man is worthy of her hand in marriage. So, her father pretends she is dead, just to see who would pay for the funeral. In the second story, a man from the countryside comes to the big city. He does not speak the local language and so all of his questions are met with the answer of "I don't know" or Minu. Whose is this? Who owns these fields? Whose building is that? Minu is the owner of it all! In the third story, Anansi takes a back seat to his son Kweku Tsin. A flesh eating dragon is capturing people and going to eat them. Kweku finds a way to trick the dragon's pet cock, and then leads people to safety through a series of tricks. For these good deeds, he is transformed into the Sun. Long live Kweku Tsin! Tritones at Duke Karsh Alumni Center. Due to COVID, **very** few people came out on this chilly winter evening. The Karsh Alumni Center was setup like a gambling hall or casino. There was also outdoor patio dining and stand up tables where people could drink and talk. Most people spent their time outside talking and did not either gamble or listen to the music. We did have one couple who swing danced to our music for two or three songs though, so that made the whole thing worth it.

Changing the Face of Jazz, is a series of profiles of women, jazz instrumentalists. The featured musician in this edition is saxophonist, clarinetist and flautist Loretta Palmeiro. Loretta has been a member of and soloist in a wide range of ensembles which have made an important impact on Australian music, including the Sirens, the Divergence Jazz Orchestra, and the quintet which is one of her main projects personally, Spyglass Gypsies. And the diversity in the music these ensembles play shows how broad Loretta's musical interests are. From her first experiences in playing the violin, Loretta moved on quickly to the piano and was attracted to the saxophone, literally, by the sounds she heard drifting across her school playground. For this profile, Loretta has provided original music not available on CD: a version of Softly as in a Morning Sunrise, in a duet with guitarist Richard Ashby; a live recording from the Divergence Big Band; and improvised duets recorded with pianist Mark Isaacs when they called their collaboration Some of Two Parts. This profile in Changing the Face of Jazz was produced by Mick Paddon and originally went to air on Eastside Radio as part of Jazz Made in Australia on February 13th, 2017.

“What's special is that we don't play it the same way twice. If we do it means we're not really connected, we're not really present.” Cyrille Aimée and Michael Valeanu say their work as a duo started when their band couldn't make it to a gig in Ohio because of a snowstorm - but after the response from the audience, they realized they could keep it going. One time in Milan, they had four encores as a duo! Their album I'll Be Seeing You reflects their collaboration and relationship over the last decade. In this interview, Cyrille Aimée and Michael Valeanu open up about their creative process. They talk about how they came up with arrangements for tunes like “Bye Bye Blackbird,” “Softly As In a Morning Sunrise” and “How Deep is the Ocean.” They also discuss the importance of listening and communicating through the music, what it means to be vulnerable and present, and how they keep the music fresh every time. You can learn more about Cyrille Aimée at CyrilleMusic.dom, and Michael Valeanu at MichaelValeanu.com. I'll Be Seeing You is available for purchase on Amazon Music and Apple Music.

Tritones at The Cookery. We did this gig back in 2017 and then missed it somehow last year, but were back again this year with a full 4 hours of music. We were contracted to play the Duke Thoracic Surgery Holiday Christmas party. We reassembled the cast of characters from the first gig and there have been many rehearsals leading up to this point. The first two sets were enjoyed by almost everyone at the party, but then by the third set everybody filtered out into this other room where all the food and gambling was and we were playing the last two sets by ourselves. The waitstaff at the party really enjoyed it though and cheered us on as we fulfilled our contractural obligations.
