Students in math classes often treat math as a set of rules or procedures to be memorized, and do not see it as a creative and powerful way of modeling reality. In this episode, Manuela Manetta and Lori Teague join us to discuss how they have combined dance with math instruction to help students develop a deeper connection to mathematical concepts while also building human connection with their peers. Manuela is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Emory University. She is the recipient of a 2023 Emory Williams Distinguished Teaching Award. Lori is a choreographer and Associate Professor of Dance and Movement Studies at Emory University. They are co-developers of the initiative Mathematics through Movement, and they have taught different types of courses integrating movement into mathematics instruction at Emory. How can intimate scenes be brought to the screen in ways that respect the emotional well-being and privacy of the artists themselves? How do we make sure that we can create a story about abuse without anyone being abused in the process?Ita O'Brien is the UK's leading Intimacy Coordinator, founder of Intimacy on Set (and author of the Intimacy On Set Guidelines). I was a dancer and then a musical theatre performer, professionally trained as an actor, and then did the MA in Movement Studies at Central and worked as a movement teacher and a movement director. During that time, I was exploring my own theatre work, and put on my own play called April's Fool, and then was looking at taking that work further and exploring the dynamic of the perpetrator and the victim.""Menopause. How do we deal with that? Of course, while menopause might seem that it only affects the person who's going through it, it affects everybody in a family. It affects your partner. It affects your children. They need to know what's going on in the body. If you haven't had conversations about the menopause, it's full on. And then intimacy and into our older years, it is right and proper that we stay intimate and loving, and then the question of how we possibly might grow into our older years in our sexuality, I would want to lift the lid off all of that for us to create that content out in the world."www.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

Dance Education Canada has led and facilitated discussions with school board and studio dance educators across the country about the importance of teacher training. Our focus and research conducted with elementary classroom teachers revealed that a lack of understanding of dance as subject can result in instruction based on technical skills. This experience in dance, or lack there of, does not enrich the student's knowledge, understanding and application of dance cross curricularly, as what is being taught, is often not what was intended of the curriculum. How do we influence change? At Dance Education Canada we believe all answers lead to dance teacher training and so does our guest. Today we will discuss how teacher training and professional development can help dance educators (specifically in the school system) give students meaningful and authentic experiences in dance. GUEST: Dr Rachael Jefferson-Buchanan is a lecturer in human movement studies (Health and PE) and Creative Arts within the School of Education at Charles Sturt University in Australia. Rachael has extensive experience in writing and leading professional development for teachers and has taken on an international role as the lead consultant for PE and dance in Cambridge Assessment International Education/Cambridge University Press central Asian and Nile Egyptian schools projects. We have learnt a lot about shifting from one learning environment to the next, over the past year. Dance Educators have moved, modified and adapted their lessons, from in person instruction to online with little to no planning, know-how or preparation. There is no doubt that the dance community has faced challenges this year, while others saw opportunity. Today’s discussion will focus on another shift in dance education, the shift from traditional to blended learning environments. GUEST: Ursula Payne is a professor in Department of Dance and Director of the Frederick Douglass Institute at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. Payne teaches all levels of modern and jazz dance technique, dance kinesiology, and Laban movement analysis. She was the artistic director of Slippery Rock University Dance Theater for twenty years and the Chairperson of the Department of Dance for nine years. Payne received her M.F.A. from The Ohio State University, CMA certification from the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies in New York City, and certification from the management development program for mid-level administrators in higher education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Payne served as an elected board member of the American College Dance Association for the East-Central and Mid-Atlantic North regions from 2012-2020.
We had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Mike Chamberlain, one of the nations leading turkey biologists! Dr. Chamberlain has over 20 years of experience with studying turkeys and much of that time has been spend using GPS technology to track their movements and study their behaviors. This give us a glimpse into some questions that have vexed turkey hunters for decades including, how far do turkeys travel in a day, do they roost in the same spot every night, how big are their home ranges, how do they avoid hunting pressure once season starts, how often turkeys get VERY close to hunters without the hunter ever knowing it, what turkeys like to do midday, and SO much more! We also dive into issues facing the wild turkey and discuss season and bag limit changes, the possible impacts of COVID on turkeys, and high intensity large scale fires in the nesting season. blackberrysmoke.com

It’s time for some nutrition talk. Stress is high, we need to boost immunity, and it’s time for a physical and energetic-reset. Therefore, I brought in 2 of my nutritionist friends, Lori Sawyer & Caren Boscaino, to talk about all things nutrition. They are both moms, busy entrepreneurs, fitness pros, and nutritionists who “get it” when it comes to food, fuel and having FUN with your nutrition. Specifically, in today’s episode, we discuss… How to balance out being a busy parent, kids around the house more & eating more, and some ways to include them in your nutrition. What can you do if your kids are struggling right now with the current state-of-affairs and how it affects appetite and nutrition. What specific foods to eat to boost immunity. How insulin plays a huge role in both weight-loss and energy and what foods NOT to eat to avoid insulin spikes. My “secret” to avoid sugar cravings. Gut health and what foods and supplements one should eat to ensure gut health. How to avoid “Yo-Yo” Dieting and create a sustained nutrition plan to maximize energy & stamina. Thoughts on Intermittent Fasting. Why gyms and fit-pros need to make sure their nutrition programs are buttoned up right now and can offer results-based, but realistic, nutritional programming. Lori and Caren don’t hold back in sharing their best “Clean Cut Nutrition” tips and habits to maximize one’s health and vitality right now. My friends, this episode is full of great information and content so please help spread the love to all your friends and community. Welcome to Osgoode’s first-ever Virtual Pierre Genest Panel Discussion. We have invited a panel to discuss the pre-recorded talk by our Pierre Genest visitor, Catherine Fisk, titled “Protection by Law, Repression by Law: Bringing Labor Back Into Law and Social Movement Studies”. This talk is also a forthcoming paper in the Emory Law Journal, and challenges the line-drawing which has led to the erasure of the labor movement from the field’s conception of a social movement, and offers new theories of the role law plays in social movement activism. In our panel is Joo-Cheong Tham, professor at Melbourne Law School in Australia, Joshua Mandryk, Associate at Toronto’s Goldblatt Partners, and Barry Eidlin is a Comparative Historical Sociologist and Assistant Professor in McGill’s Sociology department.

Hello Fitlandians! Welcome back to the show. This is episode number 80 and I am so glad you are here because you are in for a real treat with our guest today! Today we are talking with Byrdie McCoy of Byrdie’s Babes and we are talking about the connection between mental health and fitness. Just a quick word of caution...we do have one curse word included so be mindful of that, though I do hope you choose to listen to our powerful conversation. I also want to remind you that our next 30 Days to Thriving program is starting very soon! You can head over to sign up for the April session for guidance and support in your fitness journey! Enter FRIEND25 at checkout to save 25% off. Today we are chatting with Byrdie McCoy. Byrdie is a fellow Portlander as well as an amazing fitness influencer and mental health advocate. Byrdie and Christa “met” via Instagram through a mutual friend and were able to connect via messenger...it was friends at first message! Their messages align perfectly. This episode is all about fitness and mental health and how those two relate. Byrdie’s Story: Byrdie has a beautiful little girl and just welcomed her new little prince into this world! Byrdie’s Babe’s is her blog which she created for women to get to know all they ways they can get healthy. It all started a couple years ago when she began offering free Bootcamps for women who had suffered trauma to get moving and feel good. They grew and grew until she decided to start a blog to reach even more amazing women. The blog is all about showcasing all the amazing ways to move and to help women find the type of fitness that is best for them. It’s a tribe of beautiful babes learning about holistic health and finding support. As you all know, community connection is one of our four cornerstones of fitness and Byrdie is creating a safe and empowering space to feel good. About 8 years ago, Byrdie was on a Greyhound that flipped on the highway. She was severely injured, breaking 13 bones in her face, severing her clavicle, dislocating her knee and much more. This was an incredibly horrible and traumatic time of her life. She was the mother to a young daughter, a college student, and wasn’t able to do much of anything. It was a dark place and she struggled significantly for awhile and was diagnosed with PTSD. She tried medication for one day and couldn’t remember anything and immediately stopped taking the medication (this is not the best decision for everyone but was best for her). She started moving a little bit each day which helped her get her mind out of the trauma. She continued to increase the amount of movement she was doing each day because that is when she “felt good” again. She knew she wasn’t the only woman out there going through difficult things and she wanted to share the power of this transition with others and share this message and this experience led to Byrdie’s Babes. It’s About Openness: We are all having a human experience and being open and connecting in a safe space makes all the difference! Even if we have significant things going on in our lives, like PTSD or trauma, it is okay to lean on others. Even small steps will make a big difference in your life. It isn’t healthy to just keep pushing through until you reach your limits. Though many of us, especially us women, like to push ourselves to our limits until we break. Self care is key. Give yourself permission to do whatever. What makes you feel good? What helps you reconnect with yourself and how can you bring that in to each day? Boundaries for the Babes: Boundaries aren’t always easy for women to stick to. Knowing where your limits are is essential to living a happy and healthy life. Byrdie talks about some of the powerful ways that she sets strict boundaries for herself to be the best she can in all parts of her life. To her, her daughter comes first but her business is also still very important to her...and she CAN be great at both. Work only from 9 to 3 (when her daughter is at school). The rest of the day is “Mom Time” where she focuses on her daughter. Schedule time in her week to go and see a movie on her own EVERY week. Get on the bus to enjoy a good book until it stops and turn around and go home. Christa talks about a powerful experience that she had recently at the beach. She was walking along the beach with her dog, Bandit, and she was so lost in her brain that she literally tripped on a dead bird. It was a jolt of a reality check to get out of her head, to slow down, and to re-prioritize things in her life. She’s since been working only 3 hours each day and learning a lot about setting boundaries and sticking to them. The ladies talk about how you have to put YOU first. If you aren’t your best, if you don’t give yourself space to feel great, you can’t be your best self for your children or your business or your relationships either. Put your own oxygen mask on first before helping others! Mental Health and Movement: Studies have shown time and time again that dealing with things like depression or anxiety or PTSD or any other mental health issue is assisted greatly by daily movement. You’ve got to move every. single. day. in order to help yourself be your best self. It is so easy to get caught up in the negative and spiral out of control. Find out what type of movement works for you and brings you joy and do that! Byrdie’s Tips: On your fitness journey, focus on YOURSELF. Experiment and listen to your body (not what everyone else is doing). Be inspired by others but don’t compare yourself to them. You’re not alone! Find a tribe that supports you. Be sure to follow along with Byrdie’s journey and all the amazing things she is working on on her Byrdie’s Babes website and Instagram as well as her personal Instagram.
Polish-born Rafał Pierzyński's („Pierre Jinski“, *1991 in Bełchatów) star is shining bright. After graduating with an MA in Movement Studies and Performance from the Institute of Dance Arts in Linz, Austria, in 2017, he is now trying to strike a balance between performing for choreographers and companies around Europe, and pursuing his own artistic path. In 2017, an invitation by Swiss artist Esther Eppstein and her «message salon embassy» residency programme brought him to Zurich, where he reunited with former accomplice Aga Pędziwiatr. During this residency not only did the two of them resume their collaboration as «DIVAS», but also has Rafał been creating striking collages from vintage gay porn magazines and objects from found materials. On January 12, 2018, he stopped by the recording booth to discuss the living experiment of a cooperative building association such as «mehr als wohnen» that he's been calling his home for the past three months, his approach to staying in touch with body and mind and how this relates to Hortense Spiller's idea of Black Culture, as well as how the documentary film «Story Telling for Earthly Survival» (Donna Haraway, 2016) informed the use of animal pictures in his collages. Join Rafał with fellow DIVAS Aga Pędziwiatr and Magda Drozd and hostess Esther Eppstein in a final get-together at «message salon embassy Zürich Nord» on Friday, January 26, 5-9 pm, for collages, dress up, undress, prosecco, body language, dance, performance, music, glitter and magic, and to pick up a free copy of Rafał's zine «Touching». https://www.pierrejinsky.com http://messagesalon.ch
