In this episode of The Founder Hour, we have an insightful conversation with Max Levchin, a true trailblazer in the tech world. Max's journey began in Ukraine, where he grew up in a family of scientists who instilled in him a deep respect for knowledge and discovery. After his family relocated to Crimea to escape the fallout from the Chernobyl disaster, Max discovered his passion for programming at a young age. With no computer at his disposal, he began teaching himself to code by writing programs on paper. In 1991, Max's family moved to the U.S., settling in Chicago. It was here that he found his footing at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, a pivotal moment that set the stage for his future success. Immersed in the early internet scene, Max's path eventually led him to Silicon Valley, where a chance meeting with Peter Thiel at Stanford's lecture halls sparked the creation of what would become PayPal. Initially conceived as a secure way to store and transfer encrypted data, PayPal evolved into a groundbreaking online payment system that transformed the way we conduct financial transactions.Max takes us through the early days of PayPal, sharing stories of tackling complex challenges like document encryption and fraud prevention. But his entrepreneurial journey didn't stop there. He went on to found Slide, and later Affirm, a company dedicated to providing honest financial products that align with consumers' best interests. Throughout the conversation, Max discusses his guiding philosophy of HVF—hard, valuable, and fun—and how it shapes his approach to building companies that aim to make a positive impact on the world. We also explore Max's thoughts on the future of technology, exploring AI's potential, the evolving landscape of fintech, and the importance of aligning financial interests with customers. Tune in to uncover the story of an engineer at heart, a visionary leader, and a man who continues to shape the future of finance and technology.***CHA-CHING! Customers are rushing to your store. Stripe isn't just payments. We actually build economic infrastructure for the global economy. And so we've got a lot more technology beyond payments. Our Stripe Tour is a cool venue where we get a chance to bring customers, partners and thought leaders together and talk about the current state of technology and future technologies - in a local Asian context. So it's been a lot of fun. And by the way, we're really enthusiastic about Asia here at Stripe. Not only because 60 per cent of the world's population is in Asia, but also because the Asian markets are very tech-forward. And you can see that by just looking at global trends, sometimes Asian markets completely leapfrog the trends like what happened to mobile. And so you got this great market that's huge, that's really tech-forward. And there's so much innovation possible.” - Mike Clayville, chief revenue officer of Stripe Fresh out of the studio, Mike Clayville, Chief Revenue Officer of Stripe, joined us in a conversation discussing Stripe's business in the Asia Pacific and shared invaluable insights into the evolution of financial infrastructure. Mike dived deep into how Stripe is adapting and expanding while at the same time with interesting customer stories in the Asia Pacific. He delved into Stripe's current innovations specifically on online payments & financial infrastructure within the dynamic Asia Pacific region. Last but not least, Mike shared the key trends in the financial infrastructure landscape and defined what great would look like for Stripe's future in APAC. By Karl Stephens, CMCA, AMS, PCAM General Manager/COO My! How time flies! It's the first anniversary of our Online Payment Portal, and we could not be more pleased. Since its inception on June 8, 2022, the portal has gained a following of nearly 1,000 users, with 104 of those users opting to use the autopay feature. The online payment portal is an additional tool that residents can use to view non-assessment transactions, historical information for charges and payments, and initiate a secure payment via credit card for charges placed on account. Join Finance Director Jessica Henderson and me as we discuss the features of the portal and the convenience of using it. Click here to watch the video.

Smyths Toys Superstores (Smyths Toys), has announced that it has chosen Stripe, a financial infrastructure platform for businesses, to manage online payments and provide fraud prevention on all online transactions. By integrating with Stripe, Smyths Toys will unify its entire payments stack, saving time and resources while giving the company more control and flexibility over their setup. Smyths Toys will use Stripe's international reach to offer customers new payment methods, including Apple Pay and Google Pay, and local currency options in multiple markets, all of which help to support conversion rates at checkout. “As the economy becomes more challenging, it's critical we support our customers and meet them where they are—and, increasingly, that's online. With Stripe, we can deliver simpler, smoother payment experiences for everyone, especially during the busiest times of year. We'll also be able to expand into new markets more efficiently, without worrying about developer resources,” said Rob Wilson, chief technical officer at Smyths Toys. To help protect its revenues, Smyths Toys will deploy Stripe Radar, which detects and prevents fraud using machine learning algorithms. Trained on hundreds of billions of data points, Radar seamlessly integrates into the Stripe platform, removing the need for bespoke rules and processes. “Smyths Toys is an Irish family business with an ambitious, international outlook. We're incredibly excited to support them through this busy Christmas period and beyond, as they open up new revenue streams and invest in the future,” said Eileen O'Mara, head of global sales at Stripe. In this episode Steve details how you can get your staff to make online payments within your organization without putting yourself at risk. Steve covers card purchases, PayPal, Amazon, standing orders, BACS payments and paying your overseas staff their wages. KEY TAKEAWAYS Do not give your staff a debit card or credit card that is linked to your main account. Set up a prepaid card which is in their name or a company name and provide them with that. There are service providers available that provide payments cards which have small pools of funds attached to them to prevent fraud. These individuals cards balances can be topped up or reduced by you as you see fit. To use Paypal accounts you can then set up an individual account for your employee and then use their limited prepaid card to fund that account. This way the Paypal account has access to the same limited funding provided by the debit card. Amazon offers a service where you can load the account with gift vouchers and then your employee can use that fund to purchase. Be sure to remove your payment details from the account before you pass it back to your staff. BACS payments can often be lengthy and time consuming. You can delegate this task to your staff using banking apps such as HSBC Business or Revolut which allow you to limit the amount of access to, for example, leave the final approval of the transaction to you only. When you have international staff keep your fees to an absolute minimum by using Wise which allows you to transfer anywhere in the world and pays in the employees home currency keeping those costs low. This can be linked to a dedicated bank account for staff wages. BEST MOMENTS ‘This how you can give that work to somebody else without risking them rinsing your bank account’ ‘We use FairFX Business, there are loads of others available, that allows me to set up users, as many users as I want and each of those can have a card assigned to them.’ ‘Therefore you can at least sleep soundly at night knowing they don’t have access to your main bank account.’ ‘You limit you liability by limiting the amount that that person can make per BACS payment.’ ‘We were very conscious of the need to pay people in their own currencies. Obviously they want to receive payments in their own currencies so they can go out and spend it without them being charged a fortune.’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/SystemsAndOutsourcing/ Website: https://systemsandoutsourcing.com/welcome-1 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/drsteveday The RIGHT Assistants For Your Business by Dr Steve Day http://bit.ly/sys-10 ABOUT THE HOST Steve used to be a slave to his business but when he moved to Sweden in 2015, he was forced to change the way he worked.
