Hannah Diviney is one of the most powerful people in pop culture. At just 25 years old, the author, advocate, and actor hasn’t just called out Lizzo for using an ableist slur—she also took on Queen B herself. And she succeeded on both fronts. Which, once you get to know her, isn’t surprising at all. In our Vulnerabilitea House, Hannah reflects on the questions: “How do you see yourself? Is it the same way your loved ones see you?” Answering with incredible vulnerability, Hannah shares how her relationship with her disability has evolved over time and what it was like growing up in a world where the Paralympics seemed like the only visible marker of success. We talk to Hannah about being a part of intimate television history, and Ryan, the love doctor, Shelton manifests a Brad (or Stewie, or Chris, or Michael-Angelo) in her future. Hannah, we are so desperate to be your friend. To watch this full episode on YouTube, click here: https://bit.ly/41vzALg

In 1976, a group of friends invented a game at a rehab hospital in Canada, which they called 'murderball'. It was debuted at the World Wheelchair Games in 1990 and called wheelchair rugby. It became a full Paralympic Sport at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Duncan "The Quadfather" Campbell was one of the 'founding fathers' of the game after a diving accident caused a spinal cord injury. He tells Megan Jones about why they wanted to create something new and what inspired them.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive and testimony. In episode 249 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Charlie Bethel. Charlie is currently the CEO of the UK Men's Sheds Association (UKMSA). The concept of the Men's Shed started in Australia in around 1999. It then spread to New Zealand, Ireland, the UK, Canada and, more recently, Europe and the USA. At time of recording, there are a total of 1180 Sheds across the UK. Men's Sheds (or Sheds) are similar to garden sheds, in that they are a place to pursue practical interests at leisure, to practice skills and enjoy making and mending. However, the difference is that garden sheds and their activities are often solitary in nature while Men's Sheds are the opposite. These unique concepts are about social connections and friendship building, sharing skills and knowledge and a lot of laughter. Although labelled Sheds, they often aren't sheds at all. They can be empty offices, portable cabin's, warehouses, garages, and in at least one case, a disused mortuary. Some Sheds are purpose-built workshops, but they rarely start out that way. Many don't have premises at all in the beginning and instead form a group that meets regularly for the social connection, company and camaraderie. Many Sheds get involved in community projects too – restoring village features, helping maintain parks and green spaces, and building things for schools, libraries and individuals in need. In this episode we discuss how Charlie came to be in the role of CEO at UKMSA and his background in Paralympic Sport, particularly Wheelchair Basketball. We then discuss the genesis of the Men's Shed and the role they play in the lives of the men who are members, the statistics that back this up, the benefits they provide to the local community and in turn, for the mental health of the men in giving them connection, achievement and pride. We pick out some of Charlie's favourite stories of the work the Sheds have done, how they have saved lives and some of the UKMSA's key projects, including ShedFest. We explore how Sheds cut across class lines and age boundaries in bringing men together and building bridges. For Charlie's mental health, we discuss fatherhood, his love of walking and the importance of self-care when he noticed his general mental health was declining during a house build he did with his wife. Just like the National Hockey League has the National Hockey League Players Association (NHLPA), some Olympic sports have unions that represent players within a specific league. However, there's no independent professional body representing athletes' interest to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) or International Paralympic Committee (IPC). Don Fehr of the NHLPA shares the challenges athletes without organized representation face. In this episode, we talk about… Biggest differences between sport administrators like the NHL and the MLB vs. the IOC/IPC Potential legal hurdles athletes face if they try to organize and stay home from the Games Lessons from the MLBPA and other major player associations that have experienced success for athletes Whether a sport must be a certain size before athletes can pursue collective bargaining How Olympic/Paralympic athletes can take advantage of group identity The disparity of anti-doping policies across athlete organizations What role the US government might play in forcing the IOC to be less monopolistic NHLPA's position on athlete agreements and its negotiations with the IOC How WADA's anti-doping policy impacts NHL players Memorable Quotes: “The International Olympic Committee is in the entertainment business. It gets its revenue because fans, people want to watch the athletes do what they do. Without athletes, the Olympic and Paralympic Games would not be possible. Noah talks with Rob Koehler about why it's imperative to understand athletes' rights and why more accountability is needed in both the IOC and Court of Arbitration for Sport. In this episode, we talk about… The emotional story of Navid Afkari Athlete activism in Belarus Relationship between IOC Athletes' Commission and the IOC Rule 50 and it's current implications for Olympic/Paralympic athletes Double standard of how athletes are treated vs. IOC members IOC financial priorities and why Global Athlete is pushing to abolish Rule 40 Issues with Court of Arbitration for Sport What happened to British hammer thrower Mark Dry Impending problems of the Tokyo Games and what it means for athletes' safety Memorable Quotes: “Athletes that want to see better communities, want to stand up for social, racial justice—are being told that they can't do it, and if they are going to do it—we'll tell you when you can do it. And that is not freedom of expression. You cannot tell someone when they can't speak up and when they can speak up.” “If we're going to look at the entire anti-doping system, we can't look at things in silo, we need to look at it as a complete picture, and one of those pieces of the pie is the Court of Arbitration of Sport.” Guest Bio: Rob Koehler is the Director General of Global Athlete and formerly the Deputy Director General of the World Anti-Doping Agency and a strong independent voice for athlete rights. The ethos of the paralympic movement is fair and equal competition. At its heart is the classification system designed to ensure people of equal impairment compete against each other. The International Paralympic Committee has warned that some athletes are exaggerating their disability - known as intentional misrepresentation - in order to get into a more favourable class. It said this was in "grave danger of undermining the credibility of the sport." File on 4 has spoken to athletes, parents and coaches who say they too are concerned the system is being abused. They claim less disabled athletes are being brought into sports in the quest for medals. Some athletes have decided to quit competing altogether as they no longer believe there is a level playing field. They claim more disabled athletes are being squeezed out of para competition. The first ever athletes forum for the paralympic movement was held this summer. It too says there is a lack of trust about classification among competitors and called for greater transparency saying athletes should have the ability to raise concerns about fellow competitors. Is doubt about the current system threatening trust in the paralympic movement? Reporter: Jane Deith Producer: Paul Grant.
