Pete is CEO and co-founder of Realm Security, which is building a security data fabric to help companies manage their disparate log sources for monitoring tools. For companies spending millions of dollars every year on contracts with Splunk, Realm is the light at the end of the tunnel that can help them move to a cheaper SIEM tool. Pete started his career at Rapid7 after dropping out of college, and he worked his way through a variety of cybersecurity sales leadership roles since, including companies acquired by CarbonBlack and Cisco. In the episode we talk about his emphasis on moving roles for new learning opportunities, his obsession with customer problems rather than potential solutions, and how Realm's message is unique in a cyber ecosystem where vendors are always asking for CISOs to grow their budget. …in which we climb one of the Lake District's most popular heights, Loughrigg Fell, to celebrate the launch of a new book, Loughrigg: Tales of a small mountain. In the company of author Eileen Jones and botanist Pete Martin, we consider why this rambling maze of a fell – the classic 'first and last hill' – holds such a special place in so many people's hearts. Arriving at sequestered Lily Tarn, we survey the rich diversity of hillside flora, from bog asphodel and meadowsweet to grass-of-parnassus and bogbean. Weaving along the ever-popular spine path – past 'Kite Gnoll', 'The Sometimes Pond' and 'The Knobbly-Bobblies' – we reflect on how memories are grafted onto hills, and how landscapes become personal: From the summit, with its repaired – if diminished – trig point (just the right height to perch a G&T) we discuss the changing relationship with ‘local' that emerged during Covid, before backtracking past the former Ambleside Golf Course, where Eileen recalls ‘vapours' on Striding Edge, picks Les Mis as a walking soundtrack… and details an unlikely case of happily-ever-after wife swapping at Pine Rigg. Loughrigg: Tales of a small mountain, by Eileen Jones, is available from Gritstone Publishing: https://gritstonecoop.co.uk/product/loughrigg-by-eileen-jones/ Work to nurture the trees on Loughrigg is being undertaken by Ambleside Action for a Future, one of our favourite Lakes charities: . https://aafaf.uk/index.html

...in which we take a deep dive into the miniature world of lichens with Cumbria Lichens & Bryophytes expert Pete Martin. Embarking from the car park at Seatoller – and not wandering much further - we ask what a lichen is (a question not easily answered) and why lichens matter. Wandering up-dale towards Seathwaite, we stop at trees and walls to encounter five of the county's most recognisable lichens and observe a remarkable world of elf ears, maps, jam tarts and wine gums. Deep in the Borrowdale rainforest we consider the expansive 'second skin' lichen and bryophyte ecosystems that form on older pollarded trees, and the key role lichens play in fixing both carbon and nitrogen. Taking a long view of land use in the valley, our journey ends at the famous Borrowdale Yews, where we learn why Wordsworth's 'Fraternal Four' were never four at all, and why, in ecology, things are often more complex than they first seem. Is the amount of information on food labels helping or hindering us when it comes to making choices about what we purchase? Consumers are said to be demanding transparency regarding the foods they eat – from animal welfare to sustainability and health and nutrition information, they want to know it all. Surely a better-informed consumer can make better choices for their health, right? This may not be the case with some research suggesting labelling could even be contributing to the obesity crisis. So, are the regulations surrounding food labelling a failure? Or are consumers simply ignoring the signs? A product might boast that it is low in fat, but are shoppers interested enough to read beyond the headline and find out that it is high in sugar? In this episode of the Table Talk podcast, in partnership with Ashbury – The Product Information People, Stefan Gates delves into the fascinating world of food labelling. He is joined by Ashbury's Regulatory Affairs Director, Pete Martin, as they look at the psychology, regulations and language that is at play as businesses try to make a profit while following the law and protecting the health of consumers. They investigate labelling's worst offenders that appear to lead to some consumer confusion and discuss how best to get the most useful information in front of consumers' eyes. We also learn how companies like Ashbury work with brands to ensure they get the most from their labelling and delve into the possible impact Brexit will have on food labels. Pete Martin, Regulatory Affairs Director, Ashbury With a 30-year career working in technical law for grocery and retail providers, Pete Martin brings a wealth of industry knowledge and expertise to his role as Regulatory Director at product information specialist, Ashbury. From providing practical support and advice to clients, through to carrying out in-depth audits, delivering compliance information, and ensuring complete due diligence, Pete is not only hugely experienced in working with both food and non-food products, but is passionate about protecting brands and end consumers. At Ashbury, Pete specialises in helping clients innovate within the lines of the food regulation law - ultimately helping them to grow their brand, maximise existing markets, and develop best practice labelling compliance management.

Pete Martin is genetically coded to be an entrepreneur. And with four businesses built, scaled, and sold under his belt, plus another two currently active, there's no doubt today's guest knows his way around an exit. Today on the show, we speak to Pete about EntryPoint Consulting. He grew that business for 11 years, to 34 staff before selling to KPMG. Traditionally, similar businesses trade for low multiples, but Pete sold for 12x EBITDA AND with no earn-out. Was this a unicorn? Or does Pete have a magic recipe for successful exits? COP26 has thrust climate change and sustainability into the boardrooms of every single marginally responsible company around the world. While Governments have a critical role to play, the spotlight is increasingly on business to step up to the plate. The job of the communications sector is going to come under increasing scrutiny over the next 12 months, with organisations regularly fighting accusations of greenwashing for under-researched environmental claims. And with strong ESG principles generating greater returns for investors, the pressure really is starting to ramp up. The special guest in this episode of the Digital Download podcast is Pete Martin, director of content marketing agency, Always Be Content. We discuss COP26 and the demands on and responsibilities of business leaders as a result, and look at how communicators can tackle the sustainability issue and avoid being accused of greenwashing. On today’s show, I’m talking with Pete Martin, who started, scaled, and sold four of his previous companies (including car leasing, systems integration consulting, business process outsourcing, and software distribution). Pete will share how he intentionally applied what he learned in the first couple exits to his last venture in order to scale up EntryPoint to sell to KPMG for 12x EBITDA without having to go with the sale or take an earn out. This is a very rare story because many times professional services companies are valued around 1x revenue or a small multiple of EBITDA with an earn out. Pete explains how he created a company manifesto at the very beginning, created a very unique service and pricing model and then scaled up using very little cash… all on purpose. What You Will Learn In Today's Podcast Interview How and why Pete created a company manifesto on day one How seeing his business as an asset helped Pete achieve his goals Why Pete declined a $5M customer contract Why you should look at 5 years for an ROI on each hire What polling your employees about culture and values will tell you about your business When to hire full-time or part-time employees and what that means for culture The underappreciated impact of invoicing on your cash flow and company (for employees and customers) Ways to scale your company without using any capital How to balance cash flow when hiring, whether contractors or salaried positions What happens when a company lives in accordance to its values, as well as the long-term client Pete secured by owning up to an expensive mistake How to get out of the owner’s trap (when you are the key employee) How to build a narrative that allows a strategic buyer to buy into the reasons they should acquire your company How Pete got the business sale unstuck within 30 minutes after talking to the VP of KPMG The difference between a strategic buyer vs a financial buyer of a business What happens when you tie outcomes to your Net Promoter Score and get your employees aligned with that Clarify Your Path Towards a More Valuable Business and Turn Your Vision into Reality CLICK HERE to get 5 Videos to help you clarify your vision and start making

Tune in to learn how to build a business around what's important to you to create long term value.About our Guest: Pete Martin is the founder of Ask My Board, which is the sixth company he has started. In AskMyBoard, he coaches businesses using the Four Pillars of Power and the Catapult Method, ensuring they grow to be resilient and financially healthy businesses. He has sold his other 5 businesses with an average return of 11x to his investors. He is the author of the upcoming book, "Sparking a Mobile Revolution; How Mobile Voting Will Change the World as We Know It.”.On today's episode: Who is Pete Martin? - 0:47 How Pete Martin was doing this work pro bono before starting his company. - 02:11 How he grew his company without outside capital (and how he learned about organic growth). - 04:21 Who is his ideal client? -06:58 The four transition points of the entrepreneurial journey (where are you on this scale?). - 07:48 The four pillars of power explained (and how he turned down a $5 MM dollar contract).- 10:24 How the four pillars of power work together and influence each other. - 17:04 99% of the problems that entrepreneurs have are THIS kind. - 18:05 What is the rainmaker's dilemma? (and how to make a plan that actually sticks). - 24:01 What is the Catapult Method? - 27:27 How Pete Martin defines success. - 30:26 Did you know Pete Martin has an awesome band? - 32:55 Takeaways from today's show (and a HUGE discount on Pete's services)- 37:29 Key Takeaways: The decisions you take when growing your company largely depend on whether you have external funding or are growing organically. There are four key stages of the entrepreneurial journey: entrepreneur, enterprise, empire, and exit. Moving between these stages, and within these stages, requires different skill sets, different strategies, and different investments. The four pillars of power are: team, customers, capital, and strategic execution. Strategic execution is when you are co-innovating with your customers and when you are co-innovating with your customers you've got an extremely valuable business and have the maximum amount of options with what you can do with your company. People problems constitute the large majority of problems that an entrepreneur faces. So, a great way to overcome this challenge is to ask yourself: what is my dream employee like? The Catapult Method is about maintaining a healthy business from the outset so that it is set up for growth but can also be a lucrative exit. Are you using your time strategically? [26:19] “How we approach entrepreneurs as they create this growth plan is, it literally comes down to 'what are you doing on a day to day basis?', literally, because that's where the rubber meets the road. And if you say ‘hey I want to grow and I want to scale' and you're spending 8 hours filling RFPs I can tell you that you're going to hit your limit. And frankly, a lot of ego gets in the way.” How does the way you use your time facilitate or hinder your growth? Tell us in the comments, and don't forget to say hello if you would like to share your entrepreneurship story on our podcast. Kamaal Williams has almost single handedly made jazz cool again. The exceptional keys player first did so as part of the now sadly disbanded Yussef Kamaal. Their debut album Black Focus was widely heralded as a modern great, and will soon be followed up by The Return, which finds Williams link with bassist Pete Martin, drummer MckNasty and sound engineer Richard Samuels. It is said to be a natural successor that deals in the sounds of the London streets as well as plenty of visionary jazz. Williams himself also makes soul infused broken beats and house as Henry Wu on labels like MCDE and Eglo and plays mesmeric live shows, so is one of the most vital characters in the modern music landscape. Before he plays for us a Lente Kabinet he has served up a special one hour mix that offers up plenty of his inspirations and influences. From high speed jazz funk to languid, worldly jazz via transcendental guitars and summery soul, it bares all the beautiful hallmarks of Williams’s own music and makes perfect sense in warm weather.

It has the standard features that we expect to see on a fitness tracker, measuring your daily steps, distances, calories, sleep pattern etc but also has a built-in wrist based heart monitor and a VO2Max Estimator feature to estimate the maximum volume of oxygen you can consume per minute, giving you an indication of your fitness level. 4. I found it easy to pair the watch with my smart phone using the Garmin connect app, with this app you can sync all your fitness data to review clearly on your phone, sync your trails that you have walked, cycled, ran etc and pairing the watch with your phone gives you the function to receive text message, email alerts and incoming phone call alerts from your mobile onto the screen of the watch. New feature in connect app – search for courses (Routes) others have shared and send straight to watch 5. Wearing the watch on my relatively small wrist I did not find it too bulky or weighty and the tough polymer strap felt comfortable and secure. 6. For my first test I used the unit on a cycle ride navigating to a village using the turn by turn routing function, It was quick and easy to select the Bike Activity, select Navigate and search for the village using the Cities search option which then lists in distance away from you any Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets etc. 7. From starting the Bike Activity and Navigation search the unit locked onto satellites quickly,
