How do you know when it's time to transition your business—or even your life? In this episode, Nicole Packin shares her incredible journey through selling two successful pet care businesses, moving across the country, and preparing for her next adventure. She opens up about the emotional and practical challenges of letting go, creating healthy boundaries, and finding new passions after nearly two decades in the industry. She discusses the evolving pet care landscape, the pressure entrepreneurs put on themselves, and the importance of taking space to breathe and reflect. Whether you're thinking about selling your business, refining your services, or simply looking to reclaim your time, Nicole's story offers valuable insights and inspiration. Main topics: Selling and transitioning businesses Work-life balance and boundaries Evolving pet care industry Marketing dog walking services Personal growth through change Main takeaway: “I think sometimes when we work in our passion, you can lose that excitement—and every business owner, every athlete, every musician, every actor, anybody that has a passion, that happens.” That quote from Nicole Packin really hit home for us. When you build a business around something you love—like pet care—it's easy for that passion to become work, and for that work to consume every part of your life. It starts innocently enough: you say yes to every client, answer every late-night text, and spend your weekends planning the next big thing. Before you know it, the excitement that once got you out of bed starts to feel like a weight you're carrying around. That's why stepping back on purpose isn't quitting—it's resetting. Sometimes, you need space to breathe, to reconnect with why you started in the first place, and to remember that you are more than your business. Nicole's story is a powerful reminder that taking a break doesn't mean you've failed. It means you're human—and it could be the first step toward falling in love with your work all over again. ✨ If you've ever felt like you've lost your spark, this episode is for you. Listen to our conversation with Nicole Packin on Pet Sitter Confessional wherever you get your podcasts. About our guest: Nicole Packin is a seasoned entrepreneur and industry innovator with over 18 years of experience in pet care. She founded Miami Pet Concierge, a full-service pet care company, before launching The Packin Method, a mobile dog fitness service in Dallas. What challenges come with running a pet care business in a rural area? In this episode, Cathy Duvall, owner of Going to the Dogs, shares her journey of relocating from metro Atlanta to the North Georgia mountains and the unique adaptations required for rural pet sitting. Cathy emphasizes the importance of setting boundaries for personal health and business sustainability, and how learning to say no transformed her approach. She discusses the stark differences between urban and rural pet sitting, including slower growth and varied client expectations. Cathy highlights the importance of professional credentials and how educating clients about being bonded and insured builds trust and peace of mind. Main topics: Starting out Setting boundaries and personal health Urban vs Rural pet care Ensuring Peace of Mind Continuing Education Main takeaway: The greatest compliment I can receive is when a client tells me I gave them peace of mind. That's how I know I did my job well. About our guest: Hi! I am Cathy Duvall, the sole proprietor of Goin' to the Dogs Pet Sitting. Certified Professional Pet Sitter (CPPS), Elite Fear Free Certified Professional (FFCP). I started my business in March 2015 when I lived in Cumming, GA (in the metro Atlanta area). I relocated in 2018 to Mineral Bluff, GA in the beautiful North Georgia mountains, and I had to start my business from scratch when I relocated. Before March 2015, I was a radio news reporter in my younger adult years and a technical writer in the mid-1990s. I grew weary of the grind and politics of corporate life, and I retired from it in 1997. I then became a happy stay-at-home wife and devoted dog mom! While living this wonderful chapter of my life, from time to time I would take care of my neighbors' pets when they traveled and couldn't take their fur kids with them. One of those neighbors suggested that I start a pet-sitting business. So I did! My pet-care services include drop-in visits, vacation visits and overnight stays. I also offer dog-walking services on a limited basis. I continue to recover from three ankle surgeries since September 2021, so I must be selective about the dogs I can walk. When I am not devoting my time to my pawsome pet clients, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Garland, and our two mixed-breed rescue dogs, Atlas and Aspen. I also do a weekly cat of the week write-up for my local newspaper when I am not tending to the duties of my pet-care business. Bark n Wag 15 Minute Vet Talk

Leaving your beloved companion home while you're at work or travelling is hard enough; finding a trustworthy pet sitter shouldn't be. Faced with hectic schedules and long commutes—or even a pet who's dealing with separation anxiety—more people are hiring professional sitters to ensure their animals' health and happiness. But there's a lot to consider when choosing a sitter. Not only are they caring for valued family members, they're coming into your home. They should be trustworthy, professional, knowledgeable and able to handle emergencies. And your pet should feel comfortable around them. Here are some tips to help find that perfect sitter! Start online The internet (including neighborhood and community websites) is a great place to start. Professional pet-sitting associations such as the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters and Pet Sitters International list members on their websites. Reading online reviews and even checking out candidates' Facebook pages can help narrow down your search. Seek firsthand recommendations Check the bulletin boards at local stores or your veterinarian's office for ads, then reach out to potential sitters for their references. You can also ask friends, relatives and neighbors for referrals. Or connect with your veterinarian and local humane societies, which may have employees who are part-time pet sitters. Just keep in mind that people with full-time jobs may not have the availability you need. Prepare for the interview Take some time to think through what you want to ask candidates before interviewing them via phone or video chat. Don't be afraid to have a long conversation; you can get a good sense of someone's personality and character that way. Here are some topics to consider: THE BASICS Find out how long they've been in business, what their level of experience is with your pets' species and what their backup plan is if something prevents them from coming to your house. FEES There's no point in moving forward if you can't afford their services. At the same time, don't just go with the cheapest rate; you want a qualified professional. SERVICES Ask what specific services they offer—are they comfortable administering medications? Do they have special training or certifications? Are they bonded and insured (which could protect you in certain situations, such as if your dog bites another person while on a walk with the sitter)? It can also be helpful to pose one or two emergency scenarios to see how candidates respond: What would they do if the air conditioning breaks on a hot day or your pet starts vomiting? Get ready for the meet-and-greet Before you book a pet-sitting date, you and your pets should meet the candidate. This will allow you to get to know the person better, flesh out special instructions and observe how they interact with your animal. You may even want to ask a candidate to do a trial walk to see how they handle your dog. Don't forget to ask for credentials such as references and copies of their bonding and license. You might also want to get a criminal background check. Accept that it might not work out The best screening in the world may not prevent you from hiring the wrong person. But you can take some simple steps to help determine whether the person is doing their job. For example: Ask your sitter to leave notes about each visit or share photos with you via text or email. If you have a doorbell camera, check whether your sitter comes at the agreed-upon times. Get a GPS for your dog's collar to ensure they're being walked every day. Still not sure whether your sitter is up to snuff? Here are some potential red flags to look for: Pee puddles, feces or vomit in the house. Untouched treats or toys you've left for the sitter to give to your pet during a visit. Failure to provide detailed reports of your pet's behavior. While it's good to be cautious when starting with someone new, keep in mind that most people who choose pet-sitting as a career are animal lovers. Over time, a sitter can become a trusted friend to you and your pet! For more information please contact Cat's Canines at catscaninesne@gmail.com / 402-326-4595.

Main topics: Learning from feedback Expanding the Association Planning the summit Giving back to the community Main takeaway: As the pet care industry continues to grow and expand, this means more potential for business and impacting people's lives, but also more scrutiny and attention. About the Florida Pet Services Association Florida Pet Services Association is a 501C3 comprised of companies that provide professional pet services in Florida. All members of FPSA are required to be a legal business, and be insured. Mission Statement: To promote professionalism, provide elite education and create and connect professional relationships in the pet industry in the state of Florida. Vision Statement: To promote the highest level of excellence in the pet industry and advancement of pet care standards in the state of Florida. About the Board of Directors: Savanna Westwood “Hello! I am Savanna Owner and Founder of The Savvy Sitter, Pet Sitting and Dog Walking, LLC. I have grown up with animals all my life and enjoy spending time with them. I have lived in the Winter Garden and Windermere Area for over 30 Years. Though I do not have any animals myself, I love taking care of them and giving them the cuddles, playtime, and treats they deserve. I am an active equestrian, big dogs and horses do not frighten me. When I am not taking care of your Fur Friends, you can find me reading, practicing archery, riding, and figuring out ways to provide additional and great services to our clients!” Doug Keeling “I'm Doug the Dog Guy, and I'm the owner and founder of Bad to the Bone Pet Care. I began pet sitting and dog walking in the Fall of 2013 because I missed my childhood best friend, a Jack Russell named Skip, and because I wanted to combine my passions for animal welfare and entrepreneurship. Bad to the Bone Pet Care was born in 2014, and we have since had the privilege of working with thousands of pets across Northeast and Central Florida. We have won multiple awards for our premium-level professional pet sitting and dog walking, including Pet Sitter of the Year 2023, Best Jacksonville Dog Walking Company 2018-2022, and Best Pet Sitting Service in Northeast Florida 2016 & 2017. I tell everyone I meet, “this is a dream come true for a dream I didn't know I had.” Amber Van Denzen Suarez “Amber is the founder of Atta Boy! Animal Care. She has been working in the animal field for over 16 years. She started in the field by working in the horse industry – stable hand and pet sitter. She then trained as a local Veterinary Kennel hand, Veterinary Assistant and then an Emergency Veterinary Technician for both small and large animals for over 13 years. She has a bachelors of Animal Science from University of Florida.” Heidi Lewis-Pracko “Throughout my childhood, the running joke was always, “Where's Heidi? She's probably with the dogs.” In 4th grade, my family adopted our Welsh Corgi, Angel - the light of my life all the way into college. When she passed away, I was devastated. Luckily for me, 4 months later, we brought another Corgi into the family. I named her Hope, because she was doing exactly that, bringing hope to our family. Thus...Heidi & Hope Pet Services! My true passion came when I began pet sitting on the weekends. Pet sitting showed me the rewards of getting to work with animals one-on-one. I LOVE being the only one to care for people's pets and being relied upon to do so. I finally made the full-time move to Naples in 2016, where I feel lucky every day getting to live in the place that I vacationed all the time growing up. I immediately got into pet sitting upon my move and the rest is history!” Links: Donate to the Association https://www.facebook.com/FLPetServices https://www.instagram.com/flpetassociation/ FLPETSA@gmail.com FlPetAssociation.Org Buy PSC Merch Give us a call! How do you envision your business in the future? If building a team and having employees are on that list, you need to carefully consider your team's structure. Creating a team involves ensuring each person is in the right role, equipped with clear directions to accomplish their tasks. Anna Rickert, the owner of Pup Culture Dog Walking and Pet Sitting, joins us to share her strategies for developing a robust business structure. Aiming for her business to operate independently of her presence, Anna discusses the importance of having a balanced mix of services and a team that excels in delivering them. Main topics: Cutting out services Bringing on a manager Building a team structure Managing a large team Main takeaway: It's not all about the money, reduce the headaches where you can! About our guests: Hi, I'm Anna Rickert, the owner of Pup Culture Dog Walking and Pet Sitting. I grew up in Minnesota with a household of pets and have loved animals ever since. Right now I have two fur babies (a cat and dog) of my own: Ellie and June. Ellie is a tabby cat who I adopted from the Animal Ark and June is a black lab mix who I adopted from the Humane Society in Golden Valley. June is an escape artist and is reactive when she is on leash, so we have worked extensively on her leash manners. I attended the College of Saint Benedict and majored in English and secondary education. I was a middle and high school language arts teacher for nine years, but I decided to trade in working with children for my real dream of working with animals. I have volunteered as a foster dog mom and have fostered over fifteen foster dogs in my home. I also volunteered as a case manager for The Retrievers for years. My work in rescue and with The Retrievers has made pets' safety a top priority at Pup Culture. I believe strongly in respecting and loving all animals, so I became a vegan a couple years ago. I am also certified in pet first aid and CPR. I currently serve on the board of the Professional Pet Sitters of Minnesota, and I'm committed to fostering connections and professionalism in the pet care industry. For years I was unable to own a dog because of long work hours and travel, so I understand the guilt that busy people who own pets often feel. I strive to offer the type of service that I would want as a pet parent. I am dedicated to providing you with reliable, friendly service, so you don't have to worry about your pet when you are gone. We provide safe, healthy dog walks and pet-sitting with lots of loving. How much does it cost you to walk a dog or stay overnight in a client's home? While we typically consider expenses such as gas, insurance, and experience, what else should we include? Jill Jaffe, owner of "Fur Paws' Sake," joins the show to discuss why she's so passionate about offering "almost overnights" instead of actual overnights to her clients. Jill draws on the lessons she learned from her spirited little pup, Lily, emphasizing that running a business involves more than just financial costs. Main topics: From freakout to freedom Stopped overnights Understanding the costs Giving alternative options Main takeaway: Don't let clients or your business dictate what you should sacrifice in your own life. About our guest: Since childhood, Jill Jaffe has had a deep passion for animals and a strong desire to provide them with professional care. Despite her career as an executive administrative assistant in the entertainment and financial banking industries, fate led her to follow her true calling. Before her corporate journey, Jill eagerly immersed herself in animal care while in college. She began pet sitting for neighbors and referrals, gaining extensive experience with a variety of domesticated pets and even helping rehabilitate wildlife. Her volunteer work at the Los Angeles Wildlife Waystation in the Los Angeles Mountains included caring for orphaned baby raccoons, opossums, squirrels, crows, turkey vultures, sparrows, and finches. During her time at Moorpark College from 1992 to 1994, she studied diverse courses within the Exotic Animal Training and Management (EATM) program, focusing on exotic animal behavior and diversity, particularly big cats and primates at the school's zoo. After facing two corporate layoffs, Jill decided it was time for a change. In the summer of 2013, she founded Fur Paws Sake Pet Sitting and Dog Walking. She quickly acquired CPR and Pet First Aid training, joined the Pet Sitters International Association, and secured business liability coverage and bonding. These measures assured her clients that their beloved pets would always be in capable hands. Starting from scratch, Jill built her client base through social media, a website for online visibility, and traditional networking efforts to spread the word about her exceptional pet care services. She cherishes the opportunity to earn the trust of every pet owner and takes great pride in delivering top-notch service in the pet sitting and dog walking industry. With over 30 years of experience, Jill has been responsible for a wide range of animals, serving friends, extended family, neighbors, and referrals. Her responsibilities include daily feedings, administering medication, potty breaks, cleaning small pet enclosures, watering plants, conducting routine home security checks, and providing companionship to pets. How do you keep clients coming back over and over? Candace D'Agnolo, from Pet Boss Nation, joins the show to discuss how to create raving fans of your business. Candace breaks down strategies for building long-lasting relationships with clients, and how to help them fall in love with your services. She also shows us ways to increase the perceived value of your business, while anticipating your client's needs. Finally, Candace encourages us to implement follow-up services as a way to keep clients invested and engaged. Main Topics Building lasting relationships Increasing perceived value Anticipating needs Follow-up services Main takeaway: If you approach your clients from a place of service - it's never selling. About our guest: From failing to scaling, broke to naming her price and selling businesses, and from chained to her storefront to traveling the world, Candace has experienced first-hand the extreme struggles and ultimate successes of pet entrepreneurship since 2004. The one thing she wished she had but couldn't find was a support system of industry peers who believed in community over competition, mentors who could guide her, and a resource for the best marketing ideas around. Candace owned and operated three brick and mortar pet businesses with 27 employees before she turned 30 called Dogaholics. And by the time the recession rolled around in 2010, she was buried in debt--to the tune of $400,000. WOAH. Despite the outward appearance of success, her health, wealth and happiness were so far out of reach, she wondered when she'd ever see them again. But then, the tide changed. She invested in the support she desperately needed from mentors and went on to hit the multiple 7-figure revenue mark. Even after selling three pet businesses, one to Bentley's Pet Stuff and another to Destination Pet (together totaling a multiple 7 figure exit), her proudest moment was actually going from a negative $5,000 in the bank on the regular to three months worth of business expenses saved. It proved she was on the right track and could do anything! Her original brick and mortar retail pet supply stores transformed into multiple revenue streams including retail, grooming, doggy daycare, boarding, training, dog walking, play park memberships, online informational products, books and merchandise. Pet Boss Nation was founded in 2017 because Candace knew the pet industry was craving connection, needed leadership from the trenches and some business secrets to add to all the love of health and wellness knowledge for animals! Having created a community from 0-4,000+ in a short amount of time, Candace and the Pet Boss Nation team now teach business growth strategies through coursework, seminars, private sessions, brand partnerships, one-on-one sessions, and through industry magazine columns, webinars and blogs. If anyone needs the comfort of a dog, it’s those of us that work full time! Dogs are great stress relievers and enable us to get the exercise we need. But no dog should be alone 8 hours (or more) a day while we are hard at work. One could argue that the emergence of the dog walker as a business and profession has enabled more hard-working Americans to experience the joys of dog ownership, by providing dogs with much needed mid-day breaks.Like most things pet related, dog walking and pet sitting are rapidly growing businesses with codes of conduct, certification programs, insurance and local and international associations. In this episode, we chat with Lauren Heath, a social worker turned pet sitter/dog walker and the owner of Presidential Pet Care, located in Northern Virginia just outside of Washington, DC. Karen, Jean and Lauren discuss what owners should look for in a dog walker and pet sitter. SoulPup Episode 3 - Why Dog Walks are So Important Want a well-behaved dog? Take time to fit in at least two dog daily walks around your neighborhood. Dog pro Benetta Green of Gone to the Dogs Pet Care shares the benefits of daily dog walks and shares tips to find a reputable dog walker. A walk is more than using the bathroom. Daily walks stimulate the dog’s mind, it offers time to stop and smell the world, and it burns energy, to keep them out of mischief if they don’t get proper exercise. Need a dog walker or pet sitter? Ask for referrals. Anyone can call themselves a dog walker; all you need is a car. Green suggests looking for someone who has experience working with dogs of all ages and sizes and can handle your pet’s needs. As an added protection, look for someone who is bonded and insured. For a referral, check out Pet Sitters International, a professional organization for pet sitters. Green is a member of PSI, she’s trained in first aid and a member of the Georgia Network of Professional Pet Sitters. On that initial visit to meet your dog, watch how dog walkers interact and make sure everyone seems comfortable.   Be upfront about your dog’s needs, particularly if there’s a behavior issue. Whether your dog simply needs a potty break because you work long hours or they have behavior challenges, such as being reactive on the leash, be honest about your dog’s needs. This is the best way to ensure a good fit. For example, if you have a 90-pound dog, look for someone who can handle large dogs in various circumstances. Professional dog walkers will not necessarily charge more if your dog is reactive, or super large, or has behavior challenges, they just need to know and be prepared. A typical visit can be customized. Green usually does midday walks that involve letting the dog get some air, take a potty break and perhaps eat a bit of kibble. High-energy dogs may even need a run or some focused play time. Get the right tools. Discuss the preferred gear for walking your dog. Smaller dogs do best with a harness to avoid slipping out of their collar. Dogs that pull also may need different gear. When do dogs need a daily break? For first-time dog owners trying to find the right potty time, Green recommends setting a feeding schedule and sticking to it. This helps you look for clues when the dog needs to potty. Once you crack that “code,” you can work with family members or a dog walker to establish the best potty time. All the best! Do you have a show recommendation or question for our family of experts? Enter it in the comments section or email us at info@soulpup.com. (We welcome audio files.)
