It's a return visit to White Rose Hobbies, in York, Pennsylvania. Only this time we're talking with the non-model railroad partner get Thomas who apparently is in charge of ordering paint. We still haven't gotten around to talking about some their great stories from the days of working on the Norfolk Southern but with White Rose agreeing to be the full-time sponsor of the podcast, we'll look forward to it in the future!! However, we here at the old AML nation enjoy hearing about the behind-the-scenes world model railroad retail and everything that goes into it along with it. This is just one of those classic ModelersLife conversations with a returning guest that really has no direction other than to enjoy each other‘s company. It's a great podcast and one we're sure you'll enjoy.

In response to Queen Victoria's love of Osborne House, railways were built that ran from Cowes to Newport and from Ryde to Ventnor. As if to underline the significance of the project, two rival companies, the LSWR and LBSC, collaborated to create a train network that was soon hailed as a triumph of public service over profitability and that ran from Ryde to Ventnor, Freshwater to Newport, Cowes to Ryde via Newport, Newport to Sandown and Merstone to Ventnor. All of this happened in 1860: Railways on the Isle of Wight by Mike Hutton from All-Aboard Games.Read the full review here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/06/28/1860-railways-on-the-isle-of-wight-digital-eyes/Useful Links1860: Railways on the Isle of Wight: https://all-aboardgames.com/products/international-1860-railways-on-the-isle-of-wightRulebook: https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/238952/third-edition-rulesRules video: https://youtu.be/tb8DpmU0JrE?si=0gUdS68QBy_AOmJQAll-Aboard Games: https://all-aboardgames.com/BGG listing: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/12750/1860-railways-on-the-isle-of-wight18xx.games: https://18xx.games/MusicIntro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)Sound Effects: bbc.co.uk – © copyright 2025 BBCMusic I Use: Bensound.com/free-music-for-videosLicense code: CILZ3MAE6USRDRHRSupportIf you want to support this podcast financially, please check out the links below:Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/TabletopGamesBlogPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopgamesblogWebsite: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/support/

Devastation is the distraction, and the world is not being allowed to see. When will the focus shift back to Gaza? Resetting the camera angle for a convincing story. You are never locked out from learning more. Never say you are not good at politics. Gridlock excuses inaction. Leadership thrives when we feel helpless. The dirty details on the Iran debacle. Amplifying the need for clarity. The stage is on fire, and truth gets smoked out in distractions. The problem isn't chaos, it's multi-domain cleansing. Life is about planting the right seeds. The ultimate check play. This war, like others, has the same patterns and shields. The US is desperate to control China via naval assets. Energy supplies are key. By-product that are good for the Gulf. The new land based alternative. Iran is China's back up plan. Strategic disability for planners. Lip wristed pussies with no missile defense. The NATO member to watch is Turkey. They host US nukes. Russia's has real red lines. Chinese rail tech is a Trojan horse on tracks. And they watch everything. Trade flow leverage is real. When man's hand gets into the Bible, the written word is changed. Book two is out and it shows how they skew things. Shadow groups and code words. Let's all recognize the courage it takes to stand against the system that feeds off chaos.

isode 584: A Look at Market Games  Episode release date is June 25, 2025   Show Notes   This week we in contrast with the open drafting mechanic we discussed the last few episodes, this week we are focusing on games that have and use a market, and how a market game is different from an open drafting game.   Intro of Meeple Nation The World's Most Okayest Podcast Web Page Links to Episodes SaltPOD: A SaltCON Podcast Bios Email us at MeepleNation@gmail.com Patreon Instagram @meeplenation Facebook Meeple Nation Facebook Group Meeple Nation Off Air X Meeple Nation Discord Meeple Nation Become a Chanameeple   Sponsorship Game Toppers  SaltCON   Meeple Nation Gaming Highlights (Highlight-Thirty) Nathan River of Gold with Cheryl Azul with Madi and BGA Andy Aeons Trespass Odyssey The Market mechanic, in essence, simulates a dynamic economy within a board game. Unlike a simple "take one from a pile" or a closed draft where items circulate, a market presents players with a publicly available pool of goods, actions, or resources. This pool often changes, either by new items being revealed, existing items being bought, or even prices fluctuating. What makes the Market mechanic so engaging is the tension it creates. Players are constantly evaluating not just what they need, but also what their opponents might be eyeing. With what is currently available in the market. Is it worth paying a premium for that crucial item now, or should you wait and hope a cheaper option appears? Do you play the jerk role and counter draft to deny an opponent a vital resource by taking it yourself, even if it's not your absolute top priority? Markets can take many forms: Static Markets: Where a set of items is always available, and players choose from it. Dynamic Markets: Prices might change based on supply and demand. Rotating Markets: Items might enter and exit the market over time, creating a flow of new opportunities. "I-Cut-You-Choose" Style Markets: While sometimes a separate mechanic, some games blend this, where one player sets up a market or splits resources, and another player chooses first. We discussed how open drafting games are very closely related to market games, but ultimately, the Market mechanic adds layers of tactical decision-making, player interaction, and often, an exciting push-your-luck element.  It's about optimizing your purchases, anticipating others' moves, and adapting to the ever-changing landscape of available options. So next time you're sitting down to play and see a row of tempting cards or a pile of valuable resources, you're likely engaging with the dynamic world of the Market mechanic! While it might seem to the naked eye that the preservation of America's railroads from the past is sporadic at best, we here at the AML Nation would argue that it's exactly the opposite. Recently, we had the chance to talk with Bryan Lalevee from the Norfolk and Western Business Car 300 Preservation Society an enthusiastic group of volunteers that's already completed the restoration of one beautiful car. No. 300 was built by the Pullman Co. in June of 1917 and served Norfolk & Western for its career before being inherited by Norfolk Southern in 1982. It saw sporadic use during and eventually sold at auction in 1987 to a private individual. It traveled across the United States and Canada behind Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada until 1991 when it was put into a warehouse.

Railways play a key role in American transportation and commerce, moving 28% of U.S. goods and tens of thousands of people across the country every day. The United States boasts 140,000 miles of freight rail lines underpinning an $80 billion industry that employs roughly 167,000 people. Meanwhile, Amtrak, the primary provider of U.S. passenger rail connecting people across rural and urban America, reported record ridership in fiscal year 2024 with 32.8 million passengers. From the crucial Northeast passenger rail corridor to the nation's largest freight hub in Chicago, rail has the potential to play a key role in a decarbonized transportation sector by displacing emissions from cars, trucks, and planes.  This Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) briefing explored the past, current, and future role of rail in the U.S. transportation sector and highlighted key rail programs under the surface transportation bill. Speakers also described opportunities to modernize railways through electrification, faster trains, track expansion, and safety improvements.

Chinese workers helped build the modern world. They labored on New World plantations, worked in South African mines, and toiled through the construction of the Panama Canal, among many other projects. While most investigations of Chinese workers focus on migrant labor, Chinese Workers of the World: Colonialism, Chinese Labor, and the Yunnan-Indochina Railway (Stanford UP, 2024) explores Chinese labor under colonial regimes within China through an examination of the Yunnan-Indochina Railway, constructed between 1898-1910. The Yunnan railway--a French investment in imperial China during the age of "railroad colonialism"--connected French-colonized Indochina to Chinese markets with a promise of cross-border trade in tin, silk, tea, and opium. However, this ambitious project resulted in fiasco. Thousands of Chinese workers died during the horrid construction process, and costs exceeded original estimates by 74%. Drawing on Chinese, French, and British archival accounts of day-to-day worker struggles and labor conflicts along the railway, Selda Altan argues that long before the Chinese Communist Party defined Chinese workers as the vanguard of a revolutionary movement in the 1920s, the modern figure of the Chinese worker was born in the crosscurrents of empire and nation in the late nineteenth century. Yunnan railway workers contested the conditions of their employment with the knowledge of a globalizing capitalist market, fundamentally reshaping Chinese ideas of free labor, national sovereignty, and regional leadership in East and Southeast Asia. One of the great things about this hobby of model railroading is that it's always there when you need it, like a faithful companion, whether you choose to work on your current project every day, once a week or just a few times a month, it's always there ready for the next adventure. Our next guest, Wally Swaitly is typical of folks who revisit the hobby after years or perhaps even decades away, whilst pursuing other interests. But what makes Wally so interesting is how much he's accomplished in just a few short years since his return and even more amazing are some of the projects he's decided to tackle strictly for the enjoyment of it. Whether it's the N-Scale railroad that runs around the ceiling, his beautiful HO-Scale shelf layout or his On-30 fantasy layout, each one is built with enthusiasm and excitement.

That's exactly what happened to Mike Hauk When his Susquehanna and New York, Railroad appeared on the cover of the May issue of Railroad Model Craftsman. This HO scale railroad is based on a short line located in the central Pennsylvania mountains, north of Williamsport and along the West branch of the Susquehanna River. Mike first discovered this railroad while reading Tom Taber's series on logging railroads, while more inspiration came from the family hunting camp that wasn't far from an entire freight yard thick with woods after its abandonment years before. It's a great podcast and one we're sure you'll enjoy!!
