This episode offers listeners a comprehensive exploration into the intricacies of leading with integrity amidst the challenges of today's corporate landscape. “The difficulty isn't identifying the ethical decision; it's making the right choice with difficult implications."Accounting ARCWith Liz Mason, Byron Patrick, and Donny ShimamotoCenter for Accounting TransformationAccounting ethics training needs a major reboot, according to the latest episode of Accounting ARC. While traditional ethics training often feels like a check-the-box activity, hosts Liz Mason, CPA; Byron Patrick, CPA.CITP, CGMA; and Donny Shimamoto, CPA.CITP, CGMA, argue that the profession must move toward a more engaging and comprehensive approach. And That's a Good Thing | Accounting ARC | The Right Kind of Lazy: Innovative Approaches to Streamlining Workflows | Accounting ARC “Ethics education in accounting has become stale,” says Patrick, CEO and founder of VERIFYiQ and vice president of Client Success at The B3 Method Institute, reflecting on his 80+ hours of ethics training over his 22-year career. “The right decisions are usually obvious, but it's the process of making them that's difficult. Unfortunately, none of my training has equipped me to handle that challenge.” One of the key issues raised in the episode is the formulaic nature of traditional ethics education. Mason, founder and CEO of High Rock Accounting, highlights that many presentations simply focus on independence and professional standards without delving into the philosophical underpinnings of ethics. “We're not addressing the ‘why' behind ethical decisions,” Mason emphasizes. “We need to be talking about ethical frameworks, values, and the cultural contexts that shape them.” The hosts also discuss how ethics training often overlooks the complexities of real-world situations. “Most ethical dilemmas aren't about identifying what's right or wrong—they're about the difficulty of making the right choice,” says Byron. “The implications of those choices are what make them hard.”

She's had mentors who helped grow her into an empowerer of colleagues, a better public speaker and marketer, and more confident in growing herself. One of her mentees (with whom she connected playing video games) went from a $500/month stipend to her paying them $10k/mo in billable hours within a year. She finds incredible joy in helping others learn how to help themselves. Optmyzer released a study reviewing the efficacy of broad match v. exact match keyword strategies. Navah discusses how she had to adopt a new approach to paid search strategy upon reviewing the results as they contradicted her previous position. A hot topic right now in coaching is ethics and education. People have questions about practices and whether or not certain practices might be doing more harm than good. First of all, it gives us the opportunity to discuss trauma, the nervous system, changes in the industry over time, and the positive outcomes countless people have experienced. Secondly, it gives us the opportunity to make strides in our own practices to help even more people. Let's tackle this timely topic. “The freedom and the open space in the coaching field means more creativity in how we can be effective and serve our clients… to be able to truly create something unique and powerful.” – Molly Claire What You'll Learn Value in being unregulated Lack of education results Draw from other industry ethics and standards Prepare for trauma responses Work toward a higher level of service Not a unicorn business Contact Info and Recommended Resources Watch for a SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT from Molly on Friday, October 6, 2023 regarding an amazing offering coming in 2024! This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast features an interview with Jacob M. Appel, one of the most prolific, accomplished, yet humble people in America. Appel is an author, poet, bioethicist, physician, lawyer and social critic best known for his short stories, his work as a playwright, and his writing in the fields of reproductive ethics, organ donation, neuroethics and euthanasia. He is the director of Ethics Education in Psychiatry and an associate professor of psychiatry and medical education at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and he practices emergency psychiatry within the adjoining Mount Sinai Health System. Appel writes for both The Huffington Post and Opposing Views, and he has obtained ten degrees from various institutions, including Harvard Law School and Columbia Medical School.Appel is the subject of the 2019 documentary film Jacob by director Jon Stahl. Stahl’s film attempts to answer what makes polymaths, like Jacob, who seem to live several lives concurrently, so different. The documentary questions if polymaths' profound intellect is a gift or a burden while trying to uncover if they are happy and satisfied in life. Approaching Jacob both through direct interviews and the testimonies of his friends, Stahl considers Appel through an emotional lens, rather than an intellectual one.In this episode host Michael Shields and Jacob Appel discuss Jacob’s writing style and method before Appel, a prolific writer, offers advice to fellow writers on the importance of the first line, how to deal with editorial rejections, and perseverance being the key to success in writing. They discuss what it was like for Appel to be the subject of a popular documentary, how his studies in numerous fields contribute to his craft, and ultimately, the episode serves as an ode to those in life whose aim is to never stop learning. This fascinating and highly-participative webinar pits the audience against three ethical dilemmas. The webinar begins with our two panellists setting out some of the wide divergences they've found over the years in ethical decision-making and ethical standards-setting. These differences are often due to cultural factors, at a societal or a firm level. These differences are often due to different ethical frameworks. These differences are often due to greed or fear. Following the short opening discussion, the audience will asked to choose their actions for two different dilemmas, "Trading On Pandemic Information" and "Managing Client Assets During A Global Pandemic" [see videos below]. After the first choice, the expert panellists will try to change the audience opinion over a discussion of the group results before asking the same question again. In Episode 14, John welcomes Dr. Sam Knapp back to the podcast. Sam was fresh off his Lifetime Achievement Award in Ethics Education from the American Psychological Association. After John's first attempt at listener mail, the topic moves toward ethics education and ways to contemplate positive ethics. Rather than looking at remedial ethics or the ethics floor, John and Sam give plenty of examples about striving for the ethical ceiling. The focus on quality enhancement strategies grew out of risk management strategies. From a quality enhancement perspective, Sam and John give several examples of what may trigger the need for quality enhancement strategies. They also review four quality enhancement strategies: 1) consultation, 2) empower collaboration, 3) documentation, and 4) redundant protections. Sam and John also talk about psychologists' emotional reactions to patients. At the end of this podcast, the listener will be able to: 1. Outline three quality enhancement strategies, 2. Describe how to prepare for a helpful consultation, and, 3. List the reasons why redundant protections are helpful in clinical practice. Lucky Episode 13 mirrors Episode 6 in that the content is similar. In the first half of the program, John speaks with Dr. Donald McAleer, psychologist and ethics educator, and his pre-doctoral intern Reneh Karamians about ethics education in graduate programs and at internship sites. We sprinkle in personal experience and the Acculturation Model focusing on how students and early career psychologists may think about ethical decision-making. In the second half, the participants discuss Vignette #5, A Tricky Situation from the "Vignette Warehouse" at the Ethics and Psychology site. Dr. McAleer and Intern Reneh arrive at different conclusions as to how to handle the vignette, which nicely models that there can be more than one right answer when dealing with ethical dilemmas. At the end of this podcast, the listener will be able to: 1. Outline two important components in ethics education, 2. Identify the competing ethical principles in the vignette, and, 3. Ethics, Education, and Community: Pushing Our Spiritual Envelopes, 29 March 1992, Ken Davis, WES Member. Notes: The talk discusses some of the core work of the "Eliciting the Best" course. The adoption of a value paradigm reinforced by the inner critic limits our lives and relationships. Instead we need to develop an inner witness to reinforce a value paradigm. Ken Davis helped develop and also taught the "Eliciting the Best" adult education program at WES.
