Good evening, dear listeners, and welcome back to another thrilling episode of Brett's Old Time Radio Show. I hope you've had a wonderful day and you're ready to unwind, relax, and join me for a captivating journey back in time. Here at my home in beautiful Lyme Bay, it's a lovely December evening, and I can only hope it's just as cozy and peaceful where you are. If you're new here, I'm Brett, your host for this evening, guiding you through the dusty archives of old-time radio. For those of you who have joined me before, welcome back – your presence truly makes the night special. Don't forget, you can find all of my links, including Instagram and YouTube, at www.linktr.ee/brettsoldtimeradioshow. I'd love to have you follow along on those platforms as well. Your feedback means the world to me, so feel free to send me any thoughts, comments, or suggestions at brett@tourdate.co.uk. Now, sit back, relax, and prepare for another unforgettable radio experience. Tonight, we have a classic in store for you: Secrets of Scotland Yard, a gripping radio program that transported listeners to the heart of London's legendary Metropolitan Police Headquarters. Broadcasting from the 1940s to the 1950s, this show became a hallmark of the golden age of radio, blending real-life criminal cases with thrilling dramatizations and offering a rare glimpse into the world of Scotland Yard's finest detectives. Secrets of Scotland Yard was not just a radio show – it was an invitation into the world of crime-solving that captivated audiences with its compelling, often chilling true crime stories. Each episode unfolded like a documentary, narrated by the authoritative voices of seasoned hosts like Clive Brook. His calm yet deliberate tone added gravitas to the intricate tales of murder, robbery, and espionage that the Yard had faced. With each case, the show peeled back the layers of detective work, from police interrogations to the pursuit of suspects, giving listeners an almost cinematic feel for how these crimes were solved. The show's format was as straightforward as it was captivating: a real crime, a methodical investigation, and a resolution that often felt as satisfying as it was suspenseful. Whether it was a high-profile murder or a daring heist, Secrets of Scotland Yard delivered not just the facts but also the sense of intrigue and danger that surrounded each case. The narratives were punctuated by dramatized re-enactments that highlighted Scotland Yard's ingenious methods, from careful deduction to early uses of forensic technology. These episodes left you on the edge of your seat, eager to learn how the detectives would crack each case wide open. But what truly made Secrets of Scotland Yard resonate with listeners was the mystique surrounding the Metropolitan Police. As the symbol of elite law enforcement, Scotland Yard had long been a subject of fascination, and the radio program played into this fascination by offering a rare peek into the methods and procedures of this storied institution. With every case, listeners found themselves transported to the cobblestone streets of London, following detectives as they pieced together clues, pursued criminals across the city, and brought them to justice. In a time when the true crime genre was still in its infancy, Secrets of Scotland Yard helped shape the future of crime storytelling. It wasn't just entertainment; it was a blend of education and suspense, a forerunner to today's true crime podcasts and documentaries. The show's legacy lives on, influencing everything from police procedurals to the current true crime boom. It's a show that laid the groundwork for the genre, blending historical interest with the drama of real-life crime. Though the program eventually faded from the airwaves with the rise of television, its impact has been enduring. Today, Secrets of Scotland Yard remains a cornerstone of old-time radio, a testament to the enduring appeal of detective work and the intrigue surrounding one of the world's most famous police forces. And with that, I invite you to sit back and enjoy this evening's episode. Let yourself be transported into the heart of a real Scotland Yard investigation, as we dive deep into the cases that defined an era of crime-solving brilliance. Thank you once again for joining me on this journey through time. If you enjoy the show, don't forget to follow me on Instagram and YouTube, and send me your thoughts – I love hearing from you. Stumbling upon her name while researching the Ruxton murders, Tom discovered Violet's enduring fight against the death penalty, motivated by her strong belief in the sanctity of life as guided by her religious convictions. Born into poverty, Violet's journey from a maid to a successful entrepreneur who invented the first brushless shaving soap, Shavex, is nothing short of inspiring. Despite her wealth, Violet directed her resources and energy into her anti-death penalty crusade, challenging authorities and organising impactful protests. Tom draws parallels between Violet's effective methods and modern-day protests, highlighting how her respectful direct actions contrasted with disruptive tactics seen today. He suggests that her determination and strategic approach offer lessons for contemporary movements. Violet lived to see the abolition of the death penalty in the UK but was largely unrecognised for her efforts, an oversight Tom seeks to rectify by bringing her story back into the light. On March 15, 1895, thirty-five-year-old Michael Cleary murdered his wife, twenty-six-year-old Bridget Cleary in their home in Ballyvadlea, County Tipperary. While terrible, the murder was just the last act in a series of bizarre atrocities committed against Bridget, whom her husband would later claim had been taken by malevolent fairy folk and replaced with a changeling.More shocking, however, was that the barbaric act hadn't been committed by one man alone, but by a group of rural men, including family. Was Bridget Cleary really murdered out of fear of fairies? Or had Michael Cleary just convinced himself of as much in order to commit murder?ReferencesBourke, Angela. 1999. Now the Head Cheer Coach at York Suburban High School, this York, Pa. native and former dance and gymnastics instructor is also one of the co-founders of the Baltimore Colts Cheerleaders Alumni Association.  If you're a former Colt cheerleader or know someone who is, please email her at lyoder1111@aol.com.  Some Marylanders old enough to remember that fateful night  in 1983 will never forgive the Irsay family.  Even though most of us have long since moved on and embraced the Ravens,  we continue to cherish  our Baltimore Colts, and the cheerleaders were a huge part of the pageantry that played out on every gameday at Memorial Stadium.  So many good memories remain and we are honored that Leslee has chosen to share them on Mainstreet. Note: During our conversation, Leslee mentions a country club in Ruxton, Md. and asks us for help to correctly pronounce its name.  No help was forthcoming at that moment, but the country club to which Leslee referred is: https://www.lhirondelle.com/ Please visit our sponsor: https://www.belairaupair.com/Bel Air's premier pet sitting and dog walking service. Support the showFacebook: @USAMainstreetWebsite: themainstreetpodcast.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/home?lang=enEmail: info@themainstreetpodcast.comPlease support The Mainstreet PodcastBuy Me A Coffee:Buy Me a Coffee Mainstreet Patreon: patreon.com/mainstreetpodcast

By the 1930s forensic police work had just begun to come into its own. The late 1920s had introduced advancements that had seen investigations using more than simple fingerprint evidence to solve crime and in America the FBI's technical crime lab would firmly establish itself over the first half of the decade. Both in the UK and the USA experts from outside of the police or detective agencies were routinely drafted in to help on cases and in the UK there were none more qualified than the professors in the medical universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow. In 1935 a grim discovery in a rural Scottish town opened a sensational case that would see the country's finest experts challenged to not only help the police to solve a murder case, but to pioneer multiple new forensic techniques along the way, creating innovative methods that would go on to be used right up to the modern day. In 1998, Fiona Lang was charged under the Road Traffic Act of being in charge of a motor vehicle while over the limit: drink driving. Fiona pled the defence of necessity, saying she was fleeing in fear for her life. The sheriff dismissed her plea, discounting the evidence that Fiona provided to support her claim. She was charged, and leave to appeal was refused. This episode, by discussing Fiona's story, we take a closer look at the impact of perspective in legal decision making. Whose stories are told in court? Whose stories matter? What type of evidence is deemed legally relevant, and what type is disregarded?About the Scottish Feminist Judgments Podcast: Is the law neutral, and does it serve us all equally? The Scottish Feminist Judgements Project (SFJP) attempts to answer these questions. Legal academics and practitioners got together to re-write historical cases through a gendered lens. In their re-writing, the feminist judges could only use tools -  laws, evidence, and social understanding of the world - that could have been accessed by the original judge and jury at the time of the original judgement.Learn more about the SFJP

Though it was released four years ago, it continues to make waves in the environment debate.Jo produced the film as a result of seeing, first hand, how plastics and pollutants damage the ocean, and in turn damage us. She started the marine programme when she worked for the WWF; she pushed for conservation documentaries to be made whilst at the BBC. Now, after years of being told that people “aren’t interested in conservation,” Jo is making people listen to the ocean - whether they want to hear it or not.Topics include: ocean literacy, funding, climate cynicism, plastic intelligence, the youth's passion, and not taking no for an answer, This is Jo Ruxton’s Rocket Fuel.———————Follow James @JamesErskine (twitter.com/jameserskine)Follow Rocket @WeAreRocketHQ (twitter.com/wearerockethq)Follow Rocket on LinkedIn (linkedin.com/company/thebigshot)wearerocket.co.uk/Contact Jo Ruxton on LinkedIN (linkedin.com/in/jo-ruxton-57589aa)Follow her on Twitter @jamesmanager_ (twitter.com/joruxton)Follow Plastic Oceans UK@PlasticOceans (twitter.com/PlasticOceans)Contact Plastic Oceans UK on LinkedIn (linkedin.com/company/plastic-oceans-foundation-uk)plasticoceans.uk/Stream A Plastic Ocean on Netflix: netflix.com/gb/title/80164032 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Their trials have become legendary. Stories presented in the series include the theft of the British crown jewels by Colonel Thomas Blood; the story of a man who finds an armless and legless body wrapped in ribbons and lace; or the strange story of two close brothers who love one another enough to contemplate the murder of a brotherâs affluent, yet unsightly and ignorant, wife. Murders, forgery, and robberies all get a through review on the program. Each time, Scotland Yard detectives are afoot to solve the crime mystery!
