Christian Zyp interviews Matthew Salleh (director/cinematographer) & Rose Tucker (producer) about their documentary SLICE OF LIFE: THE AMERICAN DREAM. IN FORMER PIZZA HUTS. See the Canadian Premiere of this film at CUFF.Docs Saturday November 23rd, 2024 at the Globe CInema at 7:15pm.A contemporary portrait of America, told through a collection of stories observed within the walls of former Pizza Hut buildings across the country. These nostalgic spaces hold memories of a bygone era, but through the power of transformation, they provide something new and special for the communities that continue to flow through them. From an LGBTQ+ church in Florida, to a karaoke bar in Texas, to a cannabis dispensary in rural Colorado, these modern-day portraits are paralleled with the origin story of Pizza Hut - one of America's most iconic brands, and the two brothers who founded the company in Wichita, Kansas in 1958.

My friends Margaret Olsen Hemming and Rev. Dr. Fatimah Salleh (who was on Episode 710) join us to talk about their latest (and final) volume of “The Book of Mormon for the Least of These, Volume 3: Helaman-Moroni.” Margaret and Fatimah share some of the behind-the-scenes story of working together to write these books, their personal journeys with the Book of Mormon, and what they hope to accomplish with their books. Their work helps us read the book from a social justice perspective that speaks to issues of racism, sexism, immigrations, refugees, and socioeconomic inequality—and then consider what we can do in our circle of influence to be better disciples of Christ. I was so moved listening to these inspiring scholars, authors, theologians, and disciples. I will be using their books as I study the Book of Mormon in 2024 and look for things I need to change in my world view to better love, see, and support those walking a harder road. Thank you, Margaret and Fatimah, for your wonderful work. Honored to have you on the podcast! My friend Rev. Dr. Fatimah Salleh (PhD in Mass Communication, Master's degree in Public Communication, Master of Divinity from Duke, Married Mother of Three, LDS Author, Grew Up LDS/RM) joins us to share insights about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Fatimah (co-author of “The Book of Mormon for the Least of These” a three-volume series; and her new book “Love Memory: A Memoir & A Practice” edited by Marci McPhee) talks about her own story growing up to in a multi-ethnic/culture/religious family and her personal journey in the LDS Church and her “soft separation from the Church” leading to her current role as a Baptist Pastor. Fatimah, who is respectful of the Church, talks about God's love for all God's children, seeing a social justice charge in our scriptures, and the need to bring those on the margins into full inclusion. Fatimah gives advice for younger people including “being the greatest explorer of your life” and how she, as a clergy member, has a responsibility to learn, grow, apologize, and “do no harm.” On a personal note, Dr Salleh gave a sermon (see show notes) in 2015 called “Theology From the Margins” that gave me the theological perspective and doctrinal foundation to become an ally for LGBTQ Latter-day Saints. It was transforming for me as she spoke about the Canaanite woman, not reading the scriptures with the lens of “who is in and who is out”, seeing and using privilege, and being an ally. Thank you, Rev. Dr. Fatimah Salleh, for being on the podcast and your life work to help people find the love of God, bring the human family together, heal each other, and find Jesus. You are a great human doing much good in our world. Partners in life, as well as art, documentary makers Matthew Salleh and Rose Tucker travelled the world, looking at the simple and extraordinary ways that dogs influence our daily lives. “We Don't Deserve Dogs” is described by the pair as a contemplative odyssey across the planet, from former child soldiers in Uganda to the local pub in a Scottish town to a dog walker on the streets of Istanbul, this film is a kaleidoscope of unconventional portraits from fascinating locations. This is their second feature length documentary following “Barbecue” – about the ritual of cooking meat over an open flame. At the core, their films seek to tell global stories about the power of community, the role of tradition, and how unique cultural experiences shape the human condition. Those themes are absolutely captured in “We Don't Deserve Dogs” and this conversation reveals not just the inner workings of the film, but the filmmaking process they used and the impact the Coronavirus pandemic had on its release. About Matthew Salleh and Rose Tucker Matthew Salleh and Rose Tucker are an Australian born, Brooklyn based documentary filmmaking duo. Their debut feature Barbecue world premiered at SXSW in 2017, was picked up for a three year global release by Netflix, and won the 2018 James Beard Award for Best Documentary. Their second feature documentary, We Don't Deserve Dogs, was selected to premiere in competition at SXSW 2020, which was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The film recommenced its festival run later in 2020, with selections at major festivals including Warsaw Film Festival, Miami Film Festival GEMS, and the Brisbane International Film Festival. Matt and Rosie's films are consistent festival favorites, screening at over 40 film festivals. Their short documentary Pablo's Villa was the recipient of the 2014 ATOM Award for Best Australian Short Documentary, and Central Texas Barbecue was awarded Best Short Film at the 2015 New York Food Film Festival. https://www.wedontdeservedogs.com/ About The Long Leash  Thank you for joining us. On October 29, 2020, Malaysian literary and artistic icon Salleh Ben Joned passed away at the age of 79. Salleh was known for his powerful poetry and essays in both Bahasa Malaysia and English, and is also often referred to as a maverick and non-conformist for his works that challenged taboos about race, religion, sexuality, and so on. In many ways, he is also seen as being relatively underrated or unrecognised for his contributions to the local literary scene. We pay tribute to Salleh and his legacy, with poet and writer Bernice Chauly, and academic and writer Malachi Edwin Vethamani. Image Source: Salleh Ben Joned Facebook

In this very personal conversation,  The Rev. Dr Fatimah Salleh mourns with me the brokenness that is her nation and her church.

The idea that one must go to school for documentary filmmaking in order to become a good documentary filmmaker is a fairly hollow assumption. There are plenty great doc films made by people that never had any sort of formal training in film. But does that mean we shouldn't be developing our discipline in other ways? Of course not.   Just as a beginner piano player would likely take lessons from a professional, we documentary filmmakers should be learning from other doc makers who have come before us. So in this week's opening segment of TDL, I'm going to give you what I think are 5 Reasons to Study Documentary Filmmaking.     Podcast Conversation In our shared conversation, I speak with http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3268319/ (Matthew Salleh) and http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3490895/ (Rose Tucker), a couple from Adelaide, Australia, who spent the past decade honing their documentary skills by crafting award-winning shorts, like Pablo's Villa and Central Texas Barbecue, the latter of which turned into their first documentary feature, http://www.urtextfilms.com/barbecue/ (Barbecue), which is just recently been released on https://www.netflix.com/title/80182274 (Netflix).   Topics Discussedhow short docs got them recognized by international festivals, which turned into eventual funding for their first doc feature how they made a conscious choice to elevate their documentaries to the cinematic how and why they believe that commercial filmmaking can be just as gratifying and challenging as making documentaries   Related ResourcesWatch two award-winning short documentaries by Matthew Salleh & Rose Tucker:   Pablo's Villa https://vimeo.com/88706281   Central Texas Barbecue https://vimeo.com/146852397   Watch the trailer for their documentary feature, Barbecue, which resulted from the success of Central Texas Barbecue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KQRieY1i0o   Subscribehttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-documentary-life/id1112679868 (Apple) | https://open.spotify.com/show/0wYlYHJzyk3Y7fHzDDwvmp (Spotify) | https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/thedocumentarylife/the-documentary-life (Stitcher) |  Rate and ReviewIf you have found value in this podcast please leave a review so it can become more visible to others. Simply click the https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/documentary-life-filmmaking-documentary-films-documentary/id1112679868?mt=2 (link) and then click on the Ratings and Reviews tab to make your entry. Thank you for your support!
