This week I welcome Kevin Easley. Kevin is out of San Diego City. He's been he's been a firefighter for 30 plus years He's coming to the end of a career. I guess you could say an illustrious career, he's seen a lot of things. He's been through a number of traumatic events. He's had victories and  he's had losses quite frankly.....and he has learned how to deal with both of those. He's learned how to almost remake himself in some ways. He's been a captain on a heavy rescue in San Diego city for the majority of his career. He's a special operations guy through and through and we talked for about two hours. It was one of those conversations where I think we both just got lost in it and we probably could have talked for a little bit longer. But I had taken up enough of his time. A San Diego Superior Court judge said the San Diego City Council waited too long to declare Measure C had passed. The council waited a year to determine the ballot measure needed a simple majority. At the time of the election it was thought to require a two-thirds majority and fell just shy at 65% of the vote. Plus, domestic violence crimes involving firearms in San Diego City jumped 70% last year, despite state laws aimed at taking guns away from abusers. Also, as some states ban abortions we look at a pair of proposed bills in California that would expand access to reproductive health care, including abortions. Meanwhile, San Diego officials were not pleased with the performance of their new ambulance provider, Falck. And, at least 90,000 restaurants and bars across the country have closed since the beginning of the pandemic. And while COVID-19 infection rates have dropped recently, there are still incertainties going foward, leaving restaurant owners on edge. Finally, the San Diego Latino Film Festival was forced to go virtual for two years because of the pandemic but on Thursday it returns to an in-person festival at a new location in Mission Valley.

Cities need nonprofits to serve their most vulnerable. But in Chula Vista, some nonprofit leaders say dealing with difficult city officials isn't worth the trouble. City leaders are hotly debating who should provide gas and electric services to San Diegans. The city's so-called franchise agreement with San Diego Gas & Electric is expiring in January after 50 years.Now, it seems just about everyone wants a say in what the next long-term deal looks like. Should the city renew its contract with SDG&E? Or go with another company? How long should the new agreement be? And how much money should the city ask for?Or should the city simply explore running its own electric and gas system, like they do in Los Angeles and Sacramento?

On the California-Mexico border, the coronavirus continues to disproportionately impact communities where large numbers of essential workers and high rates of poverty render preventative measures, such as social distancing, nearly impossible. In San Diego County, the discrepancy between case totals tracks the region's socio-economic divisions. In the county's southernmost zip code, case rates are roughly 3 times higher than San Diego City itself and 5 times higher than several of the county's wealthiest neighborhoods, including La Jolla, Rancho Santa Fe, and Del Mar. "The virus and the impact of the virus follows exactly what we already knew about the impact of zip code and health disparities on life expectancy and outcome," explains Dr. Jeanette Aldous, the clinical director of infectious disease at San Ysidro Health Center in San Diego, Ca. Hibbeln is joined by Pamela Luster, President of San Diego Mesa College; Adrian Gonzales, Vice President for Student Services for San Diego Miramar College; and Tillie Chavez, Vice President of Instruction for San Diego City College. All four education leaders talk about the partnership between the school district and the community colleges to provide college courses for high school students; certificates for high school students leading to college level work; and the alignment of career exploration with high school and college coursework.

Before that happened, the City Council and the mayor both announced they opposed the measure.
