We are in the THICK OF IT. Carrie once again can't leave well enough alone, and decides to double down on the betrayal and drama by giving Big a "you up?" call while Aiden is away for literally two days. Meanwhile, Samantha throws a party to celebrate her fabulousity, until Charlotte points out that you can't REALLY be fabulous if you don't have a boyfriend. Miranda has a BUNCH of phone sex which we agree would get old REAL fast, and Aiden is giving "bad pet owner" vibes when he doesn't seem to have any reaction to Carrie losing his dog. We had a very special guest on this week's edition of You Had To Be There on Off The Ball Breakfast. The co-creator of Alan Partridge and the man behind television shows like The Thick Of It and Veep, it was our great privilege to have the remarkable Armando Iannucci join us in studio to reflect on his relationship with sport and much, much more besides. Armando joined Ger Gilroy and Colm Boohig in the OTB studio to mark the arrival of his stage adaptation of the Stanley Kubrick classic, 'Dr. Strangelove'. There will be plenty of discussion about the play throughout this chat - not to mention the pivotal role Steve Coogan will be playing within in - but the show is going to run from the 5th to the 22nd of February at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre and tickets are available to purchase now! Summary The UK is having an election! In this episode of the Anglotopia podcast, Jonathan and Jackie discuss the British election system and how it works from a non-party political perspective. They provide an overview of the parties involved, the role of the monarch, the campaign season, election day, and the counting and results process. They also touch on the concept of party manifestos and the importance of constituency-level vote counting. The conversation explores various British political TV shows and their relevance to the British political system. The hosts discuss shows like Yes Minister, The Thick of It, House of Cards, and more. They also mention books that provide a crash course in British politics. The conversation concludes with recommendations for viewers who want to learn more about British politics or enjoy political dramas. Links Non-sugar Sweetener Books: UK Explained The British Polity Yes Minister History The Shortest History of England How Britain Really Works British TV Shows Discussed: Yes Minister and Yes, Prime Minister The Thick of It House of Cards A Very British Coup The Politician's Husband  The Diplomat A Very English Scandal Stonehouse Anatomy of a Scandal The Amazing Mrs Pritchard Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years The Gathering Storm Relevant Clips to Watch: Michael Portillo Loses the Count Election 2019 BBC Coverage Politics Unboringed by Jay Foreman Yes Minister Funniest Moments The Definitive Malcolm Tucker Rant Anthology | The Thick Of It - BBC Keywords British election system, parties, monarch, campaign season, election day, party manifestos, constituency-level vote counting, British politics, TV shows, Yes Minister, The Thick of It, House of Cards, political dramas Takeaways The British election system operates on five-year terms, with the Prime Minister having the power to call an election within that timeframe. The main parties in the UK are the Conservative and Union Party (right-wing), the Labour Party (left-wing), and the Liberal Democrats (middle of the road). The Scottish National Party and Northern Irish parties also play significant roles in elections. Manifestos are a major part of the election process, with each party outlining their policies and commitments if they come into power. Election day in the UK is not a national holiday, and media coverage is limited until the polls close at 10 p.m. Vote counting takes place at the constituency level, with a race to see which constituency can count the votes first. British political TV shows like Yes Minister, The Thick of It, and House of Cards provide an entertaining and insightful look into the British political system. These shows often highlight the power struggles, backroom deals, and comedic elements of British politics. Books like 'Britain Explained' and 'The British Polity' offer a crash course in British politics and provide a deeper understanding of the political system. Viewers interested in British politics or political dramas can find these shows on platforms like Britbox and Netflix. The shows mentioned in the conversation are Yes Minister, The Thick of It, House of Cards, A Very British Coup, The Diplomat, A Very English Scandal, Stonehouse, The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard, The Politician's Husband, Anatomy of a Scandal, and Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years, and The Gathering Storm. Sound Bites "A party manifesto is like a contract with the voters" "This usually leads to some very wonderful political clips for later on of candidates being embarrassed that they lost in 'Portillo Moments' or like people surprised that they won an outburst." "So Michael Portillo is now known for his colorful pants and doing train tours around Britain on like your favorite show." "He lost his seat. He was a government minister and he didn't even win like, he's just standing there. Like he could see the soul drain from his body as he lost." This week on TM&TM we find ourselves in The Thick Of It as we keep ourselves In The Loop with one of the key figures, no, THE key figure in the UK wines and spirits industry. TM&TM Towers is a House Of Cards (the original, not the remake), but we had to say Yes Minister when the chance to speak to the most influential person on the UK scene. We had so many questions for this individual that we only made it to Page Eight. We are beyond privileged to say this is part I of our talk with The WSTA's chief executive, Miles Beale. He will need no introduction (but we do give him one in the episode) as he has steered the WSTA and our industry through multiple swells and storms during his tenure at the top. From his life as a civil servant, move into politics, and becoming the UK's most influential drinks figure (did we mention that?) in Part I we enjoy some fun and frolics before a much more serious Part II arrives next week. Ferg delivers his now classic interview style with an updated and much more respectful take: Miles Does Miles Does Not while Lee asks questions about attire, snooker, and the notion of politicians as celebrities. From his loose connections to navy rum and his rumoured part in The Matrix, Miles plays along with our silly games with grace and style, as we would expect. In next week's episode we talk (genuinely) about the bigger issues facing our industry and the fabulous work of the WSTA. For now, enjoy hearing Miles share his preferred tipples, political background, and how to handle a suit-based interview crisis. Our sincere thanks to Miles for his time to record this and talk about things seemingly unrelated to the very important work of the WSTA. We promise that next week's episode is definitely worth a listen, especially if you're in, around, or connected to alcoholic drinks in any way. This is the second instalment of a three-part discussion. Armando Iannucci is one of Britain's best-loved comedy writers. The creator of hit shows such as The Thick Of It, Veep and Alan Partridge, Iannucci is renowned for his sharp political satire and parodies of the rich and powerful. His latest project, a West End stage production of Stanley Kubrick's Oscar-nominated black comedy Dr. Strangelove, focuses on a rogue US general who triggers a nuclear crisis. In March 2024 Iannucci came to the Intelligence Squared stage where, in conversation with author and journalist Helen Lewis, he discussed the role of satire and comedy in dark times. Can comedy help us cope emotionally with world events such as war and conflict? Does satire still have the power to hold politicians to account? Should we really be laughing at our increasingly unstable and risky world? This is the second part of a three-part discussion. Writer and director Armando Iannucci reveals the most important artistic influences and experiences that have shaped his own work. Armando was the creative force behind Radio 4's news satire series On The Hour, which moved to television as The Day Today and launched the career of Alan Partridge. He wrote and directed the political comedy series The Thick Of It, and the long-running American TV series Veep. His big screen credits include In The Loop, The Death Of Stalin and The Personal History Of David Copperfield. Armando recalls his Italian-Scottish family upbringing in Glasgow, where his lifelong love of classical music was first forged in Hillhead Public Library. A fan of radio comedy from a young age, he talks about the impact of hearing the 1978 radio comedy The Hitchhikers Guide To the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, whose central character Arthur Dent is, like many of Iannucci's own comic creations, a man way out of his depth as events spin out of control. The 2003 invasion of Iraq is chosen by Armando as an event that had a big influence on his decision to create political satires The Thick Of It and its big screen spin-off In The Loop, in which government ministers and their advisors struggle to navigate a political path littered with inconvenient facts and rules. Reflecting on his work as a director, Armando Iannucci cites the American filmmaker Sidney Lumet as another major inspiration, with movies including Network, Dog Day Afternoon, Twelve Angry Men and The Verdict. This is a FB Live so you may hear me say viewers names and reply to comments. Today I'm chatting about being in the thick of motherhood and supporting one another through that! So many times I hear "You're going to miss this" and "It's just a phase" but when you're in the THICK OF IT it can be difficult think that way and even frustrating when people tell you these things.  Sometimes we don't even need advice. We just need someone to listen. We just need a supportive environment.  Let me know what you thought of this episode by sending me an email jessicaeparada@gmail.com or contact me on social media! In a special bonus edition of The Clappers, Karl chats with the Scottish actor Peter Capaldi over clanking cups of tea in a Melbourne hotel room. You may know Capaldi as Doctor Who, or as the young chap in Local Hero all those years ago (it was just his second role, and he's had more than 100 others since). But for Karl, it's his turn as the sweariest man in politics, Malcolm Tucker, in The Thick of It and In the Loop that really stands out. Capaldi lets slip that he's going to be working with the shows' creator Armando Ianucci (The Death of Stalin) again. But will it be on his daptation of David Copperfield? Hmmm.    Karl Quinn is on Twitter, Facebook and Fairfax Media.   Join The Clappers Facebook Group to find links to all the TV, films, books and music discussed. With Edd too busy covering the Nicki Minaj/Remy Ma beef, Kyle and Tom take over to discuss the latest in R&B this week. We start off by talking about Charlie Wilson's latest album “In it To Win It” which ended up selling around 50k first week. We talk about the longevity of Uncle Charlie and how he's been able to continually tour at his current age. We also talk about his marketing strategy to integrate his album sales into his concert tickets. Afterwards we talk about Glenn Lewis' new project “Chasing Goosebumps” with DJ Jazzy Jeff. We discuss Jazzy Jeff's influence on R&B as well as Glenn Lewis' hiatus since the release of his last album. Later on we talk about the release of Mary J. Blige's new single “U + Me (Love Lesson)”. We discuss the impact that song will have on radio and whether it will match the success of her current single “Thick Of It”. We then talk about 112's upcoming project. They are now signed to a label so expect some new music from them later this year. Afterwards we talk about some of our experiences dealing with people in the music industry. Not all of them have been positive, but it's fun to look back at them in retrospect and laugh about some of the stories. There have been numerous times where we had to wait a long time for interviews. We also look at moments where interviews were cancelled the very last minute. Afterwards, we run through the Grammy awards to give our thoughts on the winners as well as the Grammy committee. For our food discussion, we talk about Chinese food and the concept of that type of cuisine in the hood. We try to find out why there is a need for bullet proof windows in those areas. This is a podcast you don't want to miss!

Alicia Keys' new album "Here" is finally out and as always, we're here to give you the real on the album. We talk about the promotion behind the album, the omission of the lead single "In Common" and the disappointing first week sales. The album is projected to sell 33-38k which is a huge drop off from her last album. We also try to figure out how Solange has managed to sell more than the 2000's superstars Alicia Keys and Usher. We also talk about Tinashe's new mixtape "Nightride" and her journey being on RCA records since signing with them a few years back. We've seen her going in a lot of different directions so we try to figure out what the best lane for is right now. Afterwards we talk about some of the new R&B releases that have come out this year including the chart topping single "Thick Of It" by Mary J. Blige and the new Bruno Mars joint "Versace On The Floor" which sounds like it's straight from 1991. We also briefly debate whether Bruno Mars could possible bring R&B back.
