On Ep 35 guest host- Michele McPherson is back with another episode in a mini series on mental performance and athlete mental health. You may recognize Michele from our first ever episode and again on Ep 14 where she discussed the use of EMDR and Yoga. Michele is a Social Worker, Yoga Instructor and program head of a Mental Performance Program called Perform through Southwest Counselling Services in Sarnia, ON. Michele chats with Eric Corda who is a Registered Massage Therapist in Sarnia at the Sarnia Chiropractic and Performance Centre. Michele and Eric do deep dive into the support experiences he has had with athletes locally and around the world. Eric's expertise goes beyond the physical realm and into supporting the whole individual. Eric became a Registered Massage Therapist in 1999 after graduating from Sault College in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Eric has received further postgraduate training in a variety of courses that he combines to provide a comprehensive treatment for his patients. Some of the techniques Eric may apply include myofascial release, neurofunctional acupuncture, soft tissue release, K-Laser therapy, advanced sports massage and joint mobilization. Eric has worked with athletes from several different sports and at various levels of competition including local clubs, minor and junior hockey organizations, collegiate and university athletics as well as international sports competitions. Some of the outstanding teams and competitions Eric has been a part of include the Sarnia Sting (OHL), 2018 Commonwealth Games, 2018 U20 World Athletics Championships, OHL Gold Cup (Team Alliance), 2005 World Transplant Games, 2001 IAAF World Track and Field Championships. Eric is an active member of the Ontario Massage Therapists Association. Michelle is the first and only Black/person of colour, Director of Service with the Children’s Aid Society of London & Middlesex (CASLM). Her passion has always been using her voice to challenge oppression and the status quo in all areas of her life, so having the lead role in guiding the CASLM through a multi-year organizational change of embedding equity into the fabric of the agency, with a strong focus on addressing anti-Black racism is a natural fit. Michelle oversees the agency’s Indigenous Services Unit, which she feels privileged to do. Episode 10 is all about Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) with our guest Lauren Markos. Lauren is currently in her last semester of the MSW program at the University of Buffalo and has over 10 years experience in the social work field including time spent in child welfare, the criminal justice sector and working with indigenous populations. Our guest on Episode 9 is Kathy Steele who is a psychotherapist, trainer, consultant and author from Atlanta, Georgia with over 35 years experience. Kathy is the Past President and Fellow of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD), and has also served two terms on the Board of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS). Kathy served on the International Task Force that developed treatment guidelines for Dissociative Disorders, and on the Joint International Task Force that has developed treatment guidelines for Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. She has received a number of awards for her work, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from ISSTD, an Emory University Distinguished Alumni Award, and the Cornelia B. Wilbur Award for Outstanding Clinical Contributions from ISSTD.Kathy is considered an expert in complex trauma, dissociation and attachment and her last co-authored book: Treating Trauma Related Dissociation: A Practical Integrative Approach won the Pierre Janet Writing Award. On this episode Kathy gives some background on her career path, the treatment of dissociation over time, and explains important terms and concepts in trauma therapy. On Episode 8, Matt chats with Social Worker, Psychotherapist and developer of Emotion Focused Mindfulness Therapy (EMFT)- Bill Gayner. Bill dives into his history with Buddhism, some of the ethical issues that surround the religion and how this and his mindfulness practice led him to the social work field. On Episode 7- Matt interviews social worker and child protection supervisor Katie Glaves. With over 25 years experience in child welfare, Katie talks about her path in social work including growing up as a foster family and the process she experienced as a foster sibling. Matt and Julie take a road trip to London, Ontario to interview Dr. Amanda Bell about her experiences working in group homes, child protection and in treating sexual offenders and sexual assault survivors.
