This year, the Indonesian government has replaced more than 110 local elected leaders for appointed caretaker leaders. By 2024, almost all district and provincial leaders will be appointments from Jakarta. The government says that this is a technocratic fix. The plan is to hold all district, provincial and national elections on the same day, and to fill the gap between the electoral terms of these local leaders running out and the elections planned for 2024, the government has decided to appoint caretaker administrations. These appointments occupy a strange political space. Most Indonesians don't know anything about them. And that's because on one side, they seem highly technocratic. But as these appointments have been made, questions are being asked. Who are these interim regional leaders? Who decided on their rule? How will they rule? If the caretaker administrations are just a technocratic stop gap why do they feel like Jakarta overreach? Triggered in part by the pandemic, as well as a number of deeply disturbing episodes of racist police brutality, and the Black Lives Matter movement, we’re experiencing a national re-awakening of concern regarding systemic and institutional racism in our society.Our two distinguished guests in this interview, Dr. Alisahah Cole and Michellene Davis, are nationally recognized leaders in the movement to eliminate healthcare disparities. Michellene Davis, Esq. is currently the Executive Vice President and Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at RWJBarnabas Health, the largest academic healthcare system in New Jersey. She is an attorney and has held positions at the senior most tier of government, including as State Treasurer, Chief Policy Counsel to a Governor, and CEO of a state lottery. Dr. Alisahah Cole is currently the System Vice President of Population Health & Policy at CommonSpirit Health, one of the largest integrated healthcare systems in the United States. She is a Family Medicine physician and has held multiple leadership positions including as Chief Community Impact Officer and Academic Chair, implementing novel approaches to improve health equity in vulnerable populations.This interview was recorded last month as a panel discussion during a virtual conference on patient experience. The topic was originally intended to be a discussion on the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH). But we felt that it would be culturally tone-deaf and socially irresponsible to discuss the SDOH without recognizing systemic and institutional racism as a root cause of the inequities and disparities in health care delivery and health outcomes.With that in mind, this panel discussion includes:A passionate discussion on this most recent ‘awakening of awareness’ about the systemic & institutional racism in our society - including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.The manifestations of systemic, institutional & interpersonal racism in healthcare.Practical, real-life recommendations regarding a systematic, data-driven approach to identify, understand & eliminate racism in healthcare.In addition to bringing their experience as clinicians and executives, Michellene and Alisahah also share their lived experience as professional Black women. Alisahah shares that, as the mother of two teenage Black boys, she worries for their lives, literally, each time they leave home to venture outside. This conversation challenges the very core of our humanity - in our communities, our corporations, our social institutions and our government. One lesson this interview taught me is that the issue of ‘social determinants of health’ needs to be reframed in terms of eliminating the racial disparities and inequities in healthcare and in our broader society. Another is that good intention is not enough - we need to take sustained systemic action.There are so many lessons embedded in this podcast. Lessons about listening and building trust. Lessons about the unhealthful effects of racism on Americans of color. Lessons about the need to fundamentally reorient, redesign, reorganize and appropriately resource healthcare delivery so that it meets the needs of vulnerable populations. And lessons about the need to expand healthcare delivery beyond traditional medical boundaries - to apply a racial equity lens to how we reframe our education system, our criminal justice system, our housing and urban development system, our transportation system, our social services systems, our labor system, and our public health system.This was the most important interview I've conducted to date. I say that with Martin Luther King’s words ringing in my ears. Words that, sadly enough, have as much relevance today as they did when he delivered them over five decades ago, during a 1966 speech before the 2nd National Convention of the Medical Committee for Human Rights. Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and the most inhuman because it often results in physical death. What do you do for your patients around their dying experience? Do you celebrate their lives and support those left behind in grief? Could you bring more humanity to your ICU? Whilst you and your ICU colleagues likely act with kindness much of the time, I suspect listening to this podcast will have you wondering whether you could do better, especially when your patients are receiving end of life care. This episode’s guest, Professor Deborah Cook, from Hamilton in Canada, is striving to do this through the 3 Wishes Project she and her colleagues initiated several years ago. They encourage specific wishes unique to their dying patients, thereby dignifying the person, giving greater voice to the family and evoking clinician compassion. In this podcast you will hear all about this profound and important work, the sort of acts of kindness that have occurred in her ICU, the way you could approach this in your ICU, the benefits to clinical staff and institutional leaders, some of the logistical challenges they’ve faced, and some thoughts on spiritual care in the ICU. Deborah Cook is a Distinguished Professor at McMaster University in the Departments of Medicine, Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics. As a life long clinician-scientist, she holds the first Canada Research Chair in Intensive Care Medicine and is the Academic Chair in Critical Care Medicine at McMaster. She is a founding member and 2-term Chair of the Canadian Critical Care Trials Group. Deborah is an active practitioner in critical care medicine at St. Joseph’s Hospital where she supervises junior and senior clinical trainees. She is devoted to mentoring Masters and PhD graduate students in McMaster's Health Research Methodology Program, and junior faculty around the world, resulting in the creation of the Deborah J Cook Mentorship Award by the Canadian Critical Care Trials Group. Deborah has published over 700 peer-review articles with an associated H index of 168. Her multi-method multi-disciplinary research interests include life support technology, prevention of ICU-acquired complications, end-of-life care, and research ethics. She has received numerous national and international awards for her practice, teaching, mentoring and research. She is a pre-eminent critical care scholar. Dr. Cook was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (2009), a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (2010), and received the inaugural Distinguished Lecturer Award in Critical Care Sciences from CIHR's Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (2017). Her work on microbiome modification in critical illness using probiotics resulted in a prestigious Killam Fellowship in Health Sciences from the Canadian Council of the Arts (2017). Deborah received the Gold Leaf Award from CIHR for her enduring contributions to health care (2019). For life long scientific contributions to the improvement of global intensive care and her foundational leadership in the first national ICU research network in the world, Dr. Cook was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada (2016). Seth Thorson has specialized in the service of European automobiles since 1999. First, in Michigan and now at his current location in New Brighton, MN. Seth was educated at a UTI in Chicago where he was at the top of his class. He then went to BMW Step to finish the master’s program. Thorson was hired in at a BMW dealership in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. From there he moved to an independent shop in Waterford Michigan and learned VW Audi. Seth’s passion remained with BMW and he was offered a chance to buy an existing shop in New Brighton, Minnesota near where he grew up. He is the owner of Eurotech which specializes in BMW, Mercedes and Audi cars. He is a firm believer in using factory tools to ensure proper repairs and coding. His team of highly trained and certified technicians are able to diagnose today’s complex vehicle systems! His second location, Green Garage, works on all makes and models. Seth also owns and runs a BMW tech support company called LMV Bavarian that provides support and programming to a growing network of over 200 shops via remote diagnostics. Slayton's involvement in the world of art and tech for the past 40 years brings a unique point of view to SOTA, with insight into how tech as a creative medium has evolved over time and continues to do so. In this episode, we discuss what art and tech looked like in the 70s and its progression into the 21st century, Slayton's involvement in spearheading a variety of projects and programs, including Computers in Art, Design, Research, and Education at San Jose State University, and ZERO1, an art and tech network based out of Silicon Valley, and his thoughts on the art state today. -About Joel Slayton-Joel Slayton is a pioneering artist, researcher, and curator with over 35 years of experience involving art and technology. From 2008-2016 Joel was Executive Director of ZERO1, a Silicon Valley based arts organization where he was responsible for emerging the ZERO1 Biennial, an international exhibition program celebrating creativity and innovation in the arts. Talking points: Dave grew up in his grandfather’s shop. Suffolk County Community College on Long Island, New York is in its 30 th Year. There are over 6,000 registered shops on Long Island. How do we Improve enrollment in automotive technology college or automotive post-secondary schools? Need to first communicate the need for techs which starts in schools Middle school, high school, BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational; Services in New York provides school districts with shared skilled trades courses) It starts with parents. If the parent’s perception that the automotive industry isn’t the right path for their child, then students never consider it as a career. Students starting their career in the automotive. Initial pay is lower than most careers, $12/hr, required to have own tools. This needs to change. The Industry needs to start with a pay progression process along with pay scale that follows that progression. Too many students are not doing challenging work after two years and they lose interest in their chosen career. We must take on this task to challenge our future techs. Mentors are necessary to help students into their new career. Key for the student to become successful. Shops needs to commit to cost in training. Mentoring is a skill and needs to be learned. Most senior person in the shop is not necessarily the best choice for being a Mentor. There will be a charge involved in mentoring young people. The shop must come to that realization. Rethink automotive industry. From training, certifications, and continuing education. New business models may be considered. With technology changing in cars you need a next level technician. Internships First semester- vet skills Second semester in the first year- 80 hours spring semester, 400 hours over summer, 80-160 fall semester, graduation about 100% of interns are working. 60% dealerships, 40% independent shops. Post-secondary must follow up with industry to verify students career pathing and learn about any changes to the program to better prepare and keep student employed. Capital budgets for public college and the need for improvement. 70-80% is faculty salary and benefits. Need to get creative for funding- grants, donations. Facility upgrades need to be considered because of the demand of the industry. The need of industry is so great which is sparking interest from colleges to help fill industry’s employment needs. That is what community colleges do. Grants are important to find funding. In-kind donations are also important for his program. Key to funding is involvement from industry. Future of
