I warned him. I told him there would be repercussions, no matter how much Botox he used in preparation. Watching Tommy Emmanuel on YouTube is one thing, but seeing him live is another. Mike was excited but didn't take the warning seriously, and now he is permanently disfigured. On today's episode we relive Mike's first time seeing Tommy Emmanuel live, the moment he met the man himself backstage, and the impromptu private performance that finished him off completely.Send us Fan MailSupport the show

Muriel Anderson is renowned for her expertise on the 20-string harp-guitar, yet it is her gentle sense of humor and uplifting melodies that leave her audience smiling. Guitar Player Magazine lists her as one of the 50 noteworthy guitarists of all time. She has been listed among the top ten female guitarists, and is the first woman to win the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship. She has recorded with country legend Chet Atkins, performed with Les Paul and countless other greats in Muriel Anderson's ALL STAR GUITAR NIGHT® over 30+ years. Muriel's CD Nightlight Daylight placed first in its category in 11 national awards, followed by Acoustic Chef, an international CD with cookbook. For her recent release Sailing Dreams, she has created a board game to accompany the music. Her open-heartedness extends beyond her music, as she founded the Music for Life Alliance to help foster music education for kids and donates a portion of Acoustic Chef sales to World Central Kitchen.CURRENT “PASSPORT” SHOWMuriel Anderson takes you on a journey through many countries with her 20-string harp-guitar enhanced by a backdrop of visuals by Bryan Allen, artfully projected onto a screen behind her. At many shows, the audience is handed “guitar passport books” to request what countries they'd like to visit in the music and visuals. Her compositions capture the essence of authentic traditional music, and she sings in up to 10 languages. You'll travel with her on her sailing adventures, and virtually (sometimes actually) taste the experiences that led to her release “Acoustic Chef.” If you're not already familiar with Muriel, you will find yourself smiling when you feel the joy of her music shining through a stunning array of styles.Muriel Anderson is a good friend and a great guitarist. She deserves national recognition.Just one hell of a great player …a great personality and what I like is the touch that Muriel has on the guitar, the way she plays it like we all wish to play. Her double CD “Nightlight Daylight” won top honors in a dozen awards and is the first ever to include an interactive fiber-optic lighted CD cover, her own concept. It includes collaborations with fellow musicians Victor Wooten, Phil Keaggy, Mark Kibble of Take 6, Danny Gottlieb, Stanley Jordan, Tommy Emmanuel, Earl Klugh, Howard Levy, Jeff Coffin, Tierra Negra and members of the Nashville Symphony. Her recording of “El Noi de la Mare” appears in Woody Allen's film “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.” and her “Heartstrings” recording accompanied the astronauts on the space shuttle Discovery. Muriel Anderson has released more than a dozen instrumental CD's, eight instructional DVD's and guitar books published by Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, and Zen-On Japan. Her compositions include commissioned classical works for the Nashville Chamber Orchestra and Vox Caelestis Womens Choir, as well as songs which have appeared as title tracks for three albums by various artists.Muriel has published articles in Guitar Player, Acoustic Guitar, Fingerstyle Guitar, Classical Guitar and Frets magazines, and has been a regular columnist for Acoustic Guitar Japan magazine. She has many teaching DVDs and books. Muriel teaches online via TrueFire.com/h2495 and StringMasters as well as at guitar workshops across the country. many of which are sponsored by her GHS Signature strings. She plays and records on many handmade instruments including Tierra Negra flamenco, Camps, Mike Doolin harp guitars, Mike Brittain harp guitars, DT guitars, Alvarez Yairi, McPhearson, Emerald, and Morris steel string guitars (Japan). She uses Seymour Duncan D-Tar and Barbera pickups. She has demonstrated excellent technique and has the fine musicianship to communicate well to her audiences.Acoustic guitarist Muriel Anderson… has justifiably gained a reputation as one of the world's best, and most versatile, guitar instrumentalists.

On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with guitarist and composer Stash Wyslouch for a conversation that moves easily between music, teaching, parenthood, and the deeper question of how artists actually learn. Stash has built a unique musical voice that draws from bluegrass, jazz, metal, and avant-garde traditions, and hearing how those influences intersect in his life and work makes for a fascinating conversation. We begin with a big life moment: Stash recently welcomed a newborn into the world. He reflects on how becoming a parent shifts perspective—not just personally, but creatively. Themes like humility, empathy, patience, and time suddenly carry new weight, and those ideas show up in how he approaches collaboration, teaching, and the creative process itself. From there, we trace his musical path—from early experiences in heavy metal to discovering bluegrass, jazz, and experimental music. Growing up in New England, studying at Berklee College of Music, and being part of a tight-knit musical community all helped shape his artistic voice. We also talk about the complicated role of labels like “avant-garde”—how they can be useful shorthand while also limiting how audiences hear the music. We spend real time on influences—Charles Ives, Arnold Schoenberg, Lennie Tristano, and Anthony Braxton—and how ideas from those composers intersect with improvisation, ear training, and creative freedom. And finally, Stash shares details about his upcoming duo record Matty and Debbie with drummer Sean Trischka, a project that pulls together bluegrass, jazz, metal, hymnody, and pure curiosity into one cohesive musical statement.Key TakeawaysParenthood reshapes perspective — becoming a parent can influence creativity, collaboration, and priorities.Musical identity can span genres — Stash's work draws from metal, bluegrass, jazz, and experimental music.Labels can both help and hinder — terms like “avant-garde” describe music but can also narrow how people hear it.Community shapes artists — New England roots and Berklee connections helped shape Stash's musical path.Learning the process matters more than chasing results — growth comes from patience and curiosity.Rhythm and feel take time — some musical skills simply can't be rushed.Creative projects thrive on curiosity — his upcoming duo record with Sean Trischka explores multiple traditions at once.Music from the EpisodeAcoustic Metal Party - Stash WyslouchStash's Turkey in the Straw - Stash WyslouchOver in the Gloryland - Stash WyslouchAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a podcast hosted by Brad Williams, featuring conversations with musicians, composers, producers, and creative thinkers about their musical journeys. You may know Scott Nygaard from his career as a guitarist in the bluegrass and acoustic scene for more than 30 years, his work as former editor and writer with Acoustic Guitar Magazine, or as one of the co-founders of Peghead Nation. You may not know his novel Evergreen, based on his transformative first year at Evergreen College in 1973. I love a coming of age story, and this is very much a tale musical growth and about the loss of innocence during a time of societal changes . We also explore Scott's most recent album, Flown South which was recorded after a serious accident, when Scott had to relearn to play guitar. You'll also be hearing music from his wonderful album Rosco with the Swedish guitarist Roger Tallroth, best known as a founding member of Väsen. Another collaboration you'll be hearing about is Crow Molly, which features mandolinist Joe K. Walsh (a previous guest of this podcast). Scott shared his experiences recording with Chris Thile, touring with Joan Baez, and his move to Chile. Today, I'm sharing a conversation I had with guitarist, writer, archivist, teacher and scholar Cameron Knowler, who has lovingly absorbed an archive's worth of early American guitar styles, and it shows. His self-illustrated book Guitars Have Feelings Too views flat picking as a continuation of the dance music that became bluegrass, not just virtuosic instrumental music. Cameron is a writer for Fretboard Journal magazine, and his new record CRK, released in April of this 2025, was heralded by Acoustic Guitar magazine, who said: "The dynamic performances, which evoke words like sensitive, nuanced, restrained, and understated, hint at a disinterest in flash for its own sake." We talked about Norman Blake quite a bit, learned about his fascinating background, and as always, geek out on some music history. Enjoy! On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with guitarist, singer, and songwriter Trey Hensley, and it's a conversation I've been looking forward to for a long time. Trey has built a reputation as one of the most electrifying acoustic guitar players around, and we talk about the moment he finds himself in now—stepping back into a solo role after a decade performing as part of a duo. He's candid about what that transition felt like at first and how embracing that shift has opened the door to new creative possibilities.A big part of our conversation centers on feel and energy in recordings. Trey and I dig into why so many of the records we love breathe and move in ways that feel alive—often recorded without a click track—and why some of that electricity can disappear when studio perfection becomes the goal. It's a thoughtful discussion about spontaneity, musical trust, and the value of leaving room for human feel.We also talk about his upcoming album Can't Outrun the Blues, releasing March 6. The record leans heavily into an acoustic-forward sound, with most of the performances captured live in the room and minimal overdubs. Trey shares how the project came together, the importance of strong songs at the center of it all, and the collaborators who helped bring the music to life. Then we look ahead to another exciting chapter: a new electric, country-leaning project with guitarist Brian Sutton. Trey talks about what it feels like to plug in again after years of acoustic focus, the mix of intimidation and inspiration that comes from playing alongside someone like Brian, and how his time on electric guitar has quietly shaped the way he approaches the acoustic instrument.Along the way, we also get into the realities of modern musicianship—social media and the pressure to produce “content,” stage sound challenges like wedges versus in-ears, bluegrass timing tendencies, and the ongoing challenge of simply hearing yourself onstage. It's a conversation about music, but also about identity, growth, and trusting your instincts as an artist.Key TakeawaysWhat it's like for Trey Hensley to return to a solo role after a decade performing in a duo.Why many of the most beloved recordings breathe without a click track. The philosophy behind recording Can't Outrun the Blues mostly live in the room. How focusing on songs first shaped the direction of the new record. The creative spark—and challenge—of working with Brian Sutton on a more electric project. How playing electric guitar has influenced Trey's acoustic phrasing and tone.Real-world musician topics: social media pressure, stage monitoring (wedges vs. in-ears), and bluegrass timing tendencies.Music from the EpisodeCan't Outrun the Blues — Trey HensleyOne White Line at a Time — Trey HensleyTucson — Trey HensleyAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a long-form conversation podcast where host Brad Williams sits down with some of the most thoughtful musicians, composers, and artists working today. Innovation and Tradition: Taylor Guitars at NAMM 2026Walking into the Taylor booth at NAMM 2026 felt like stepping into a sonic candy store. Jim Kirlin's words, not mine—but he's right.I sat down with Jim to talk about what Taylor is bringing to the table this year, and it comes down to two distinct directions: the Next Generation Grand Auditorium series and the Gold Label Collection. Modern innovation on one side, vintage inspiration on the other. The Next Gen guitars build on Taylor's flagship Grand Auditorium—that versatile middle-size body that works for everything from fingerpicking to strumming. But they've added three significant upgrades.First is the Action Control Neck. It's a patented design with a long tenon joint that enhances resonance and tonal transfer between neck and body. More importantly, it lets players adjust string height in seconds through the sound hole. Climate changes, different venues, personal preference—you can dial it in on the fly. That's the kind of player-centric thinking that removes obstacles from the playing experience.Second is Scalloped V-Class Bracing. Andy Powers introduced V-Class back in 2018, and this evolution adds warmth and low end while maintaining that clear, balanced Taylor articulation. You get more of everything without losing what makes a Taylor sound like a Taylor.Third is the new Claria Pickup system. It's discreet—sound hole mounted with volume, mid contour, and tone controls. The goal was simplicity. Plug in, play, express yourself. No fussing with complicated setups depending on the venue. Just reliable amplified sound wherever you are. Then there's the Gold Label Collection—a completely different approach. These are non-cutaway guitars with traditional styling inspired by instruments from the 1930s and 40s. Andy Powers designed them to broaden Taylor's tonal palette and reach players who've never been drawn to the brand before. The new square shoulder dreadnought caught my attention. Deeper body dimensions than a traditional Taylor dread, with serious lung capacity inside. You strum those chords and feel the low end push back. Fan V-Class Bracing gives it projection and response that traditional dreadnought fans will appreciate. There's also round shoulder dreadnoughts and super auditoriums—the latter based on the Grand Auditorium but with all the curves pushed out for more air mass. Many feature torrified tops that give them an aged, played-in character right out of the case. The headstock shape is different. The logo styling is older. It's Taylor paying respect to tradition while still building with modern precision. What struck me most was how intentional both directions are. Taylor isn't abandoning their modern sound—they're expanding what's possible. Next Gen for players who want cutting-edge innovation. Gold Label for players who want vintage warmth and resonance. Two paths. Same commitment to removing obstacles and inspiring players. That's 50 years of guitar making at work.Sean Martin interviews Jim Kirlin from Taylor Guitars at NAMM 2026 for ITSPmagazine.__________________________This is a Brand Highlight. This week, another special road trip episode featuring world renowned dobro and guitar Jedi duo Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley recorded live at the 2024 Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. The annual Walnut Valley Festival, now in it's 53rd season, is one of the oldest and most respected acoustic music festivals in the world. Held at the Winfield, Kansas fairgrounds, more than 30 musical acts will perform on four separate stages, presenting over 200 hours of live music. Also, there is a dedicated contest stage where contestants vie for national and international championships in Finger Style Guitar, Flat Pick Guitar, Bluegrass Banjo, Old Time Fiddle, Mandolin, Mountain Dulcimer, Hammered Dulcimer, and Autoharp. There is a juried arts and crafts fair, exhibits by renowned instrument makers and music shops, family activities, a bevy of food vendors, a farmer's market and even a pub! An unusual aspect of Walnut Valley is its campground tradition. Campsites are not reserved and campers line up to claim a choice campsite during the "Land Rush.” Walnut Valley Festival goers often bring their own musical instruments to participate in the sometimes all night campground jam sessions. Bands like Old Sound and Sally & The Hurts that began as "Jam Bands" in the campgrounds, have even been invited to perform at the festival. Take a 15-time IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Dobro Player of the Year and a Tennessee-born guitar prodigy who made his Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 11 and you have Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley, a powerhouse acoustic duo that has electrified the acoustic music scene. Known for their white-hot picking, stone country vocals with soul and world class live musicianship, Ickes and Hensley meld together blues, bluegrass, country, rock and other string band music of all kinds to form a signature blend of music that defies restrictions of genre. They are equally at home on stages of prestigious performing arts centers, theatres and the Grand Ole Opry as they are on Americana, jamgrass, bluegrass and jam band festivals. Ickes co-founded the highly influential bluegrass group Blue Highway and has been a sought-after Nashville session player and live performing musician for decades. Hensley has been called “Nashville's hottest young player” by Acoustic Guitar magazine and his soulful baritone vocals have received acclaim as well. - https://www.robandtrey.com/about-the-band/ In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers a 2016 archival recording of Ozark originals Bobby Glendy & Ruthie Haney performing the classic A.P. Carter song “You are my Flower,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In his segment “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins presents the final episode of his series recounting the history of the ill-fated Ozarkland Jamboree, a 1960's country music variety show based in Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas that never made it on the air.

In this episode, I shine the spotlight on The Unfaithful Servants through a conversation with singer, guitarist, and songwriter Dylan Stone From Vancouver Island's roots scene to a week immersed at IBMA in Chattanooga, the Servants have built a sound that slips past easy labels: tight three- and four-part harmonies, fearless arrangements, and a blend of bluegrass, folk, alt-country, and Americana that still feels unmistakably like one band.Dylan walks me through the Servants' arc: his partnership with mandolinist Jesse Cobb (a founding member of The Infamous Stringdusters), the jolt of energy when fiddle phenom Quinn Etheridge-Peddon joined, and the final puzzle piece in bassist Mark Johnson. We discuss the chemistry that's palpable onstage and how trust enables them to push beyond genre boundaries while always prioritizing the song.Their new album, Fallen Angel (out October 17), captures that identity. The band converted Quinn's basement into a studio. It brought in producer Adrian Dolan to keep it honest and alive, arrangements evolving in real time, performances that breathe, and the raw cohesion of a working band. We also explore their next steps: incorporating listening-led improvisation into writing (akin to jazz school rather than “endless solo”) and planning U.S. runs in 2026 from the Pacific Northwest down the coast and inland. The title track “Fallen Angel” is out now on all platforms.Band lineupDylan Stone — vocals, guitar, songwritingJesse Cobb — mandolin, instrumental writing, vocalsQuinn Etheridge-Peddon — fiddle, vocalsMark Johnson — bass, vocalsTo learn more about The Unfaithful Servants, visit their website.Music from the Episode:Fallen Angel (The Unfaithful Servants)Real to Touch (The Unfaithful Servants)Thank you for listening! Guitar legend Steve Howe (Yes, Asia) returns to Now Spinning Magazine for the 3rd time! to go deep on the new reissues of Portraits of Bob Dylan (1999) and Natural Timbre (2001). We discuss how he chose the songs, why he avoided the obvious Dylan hits, arranging with taste (and restraint), performances with Jon Anderson, Annie Haslam, PP Arnold, Phoebe Snow, Allan Clarke, Max Bacon, Keith West, and the elegant drumming of Dylan Howe.We also explore the acoustic architecture of Natural Timbre—fingerstyle breakthroughs (“Dream River”), sequencing as storytelling, and knowing when to put the brushes down. Plus: Steve hints at a new Dylan-related EP, Signals Crossed, bringing the Portraits spirit into the present.Phil Aston | Now Spinning Magazine

Hey, Lit listeners! It's old home week here at the podcast. Joining me are two Rock is Lit alumni who know a thing or two about chasing musical dreams and writing fiction that grooves with soul and grit: authors and musicians Peter McDade and Michael Amos Cody. In this special episode we're talking about their brand-new novels: Peter's ‘King Cal' and Michael's ‘Streets of Nashville'. Both of these fabulous novels ask what music costs, what it gives, and who gets to be heard. Also in the episode, we'll get to hear each author read from their books and maybe even settle the question Who makes the best frontman—or frontwoman—in rock history? *Trigger warning: We talk Taylor Swift in the last part of the episode.
