Quick Win: Why unexpected interruptions to work are bigger problems than you might think, with Almanac CEO Adam Nathan

How I Work

Play Episode Listen Later May 1, 2024 5:20

Almanac CEO Adam Nathan believes in the value of deep work. He's seen how effective it is, and knows first-hand how satisfying it can be. But in recent years, he's learned that this doesn't automatically make shallow work the greatest enemy to productivity or job satisfaction… Instead, he's discovered that most professionals consider their time well spent if they're able to check everything off their to-do lists, even if some of that work is shallow. What really matters is simply getting stuff done, and the real enemy of getting stuff done is unexpected interruptions. Being prepared for uncertainty isn't about being able to predict the future, but instead being able to learn from these unexpected interruptions, or ‘fire drills' as they're called at Almanac, when they do occur. Adam's favourite way to approach these problems is with the mantra, “Slow is smooth and smooth is fast,” adopted from the U.S. Marines. The problem isn't that a fire drill occurred, it's that most companies don't take a moment afterwards to figure out why it happened, and how best to deal with it if it happens again… Connect with Adam on LinkedIn, read more about The Modern Work Method, or try out Almanac for yourself You can find the full interview here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/30Vyp2xacvdzEv2XsQZEeU?si=4MiyQHUhQ5W4TRd4R-4sQQ My new book The Health Habit is out now. This week I sit down with Adam Nathan, Cofounder and CEO of Almanac, a collaboration platform that helps remote teams work on the internet, with more structure, more transparency, and fewer meetings. Adam emphasizes that the debate between remote and office work is irrelevant because even before the COVID-19 pandemic, most companies were already operating online and utilizing tools like document editors, Slack, and Zoom. He refers to it as "internet work" and believes that remote work brings flexibility, focus, and improved productivity for employees. Adam argues that the transition to internet work is an inevitable force of change that cannot be reversed, despite some resistance from those who are invested in traditional office environments. However, Adam also acknowledges that there are challenges to remote work. While remote teams offer benefits like global hiring and individual flexibility, there is a need for more structured and transparent workflows. Many teams still rely on traditional office mechanisms such as meetings and messages, which can overload calendars and hinder productivity. Adam suggests that successful remote teams work with more structure, transparency, and fewer meetings. He also addresses the importance of creating human connection and fostering synchronous collaboration in remote settings. By implementing structured best practices and thoughtful approaches, remote teams can overcome the cons associated with remote work and achieve effective collaboration.Special thanks to Adam for joining the pod!Links:Follow us on Twitter: @adampnathan, @AlmanacDocs, @mpd, @interplay, Podcast Links: Website, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn

If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that we need better tools to work and collaborate remotely. For years engineering teams have solved this problem with GitHub and other version control systems, but for documents and other collaborative workflows, there hasn’t been a rock-solid tool. Today’s guest, Adam Nathan, co-founder and CEO of Almanac is working to change that. Almanac is working to replace entrenched players like Google Workspace and Microsoft Office, and a recent $34M Raise led by Tiger Global and joined by Floodgate and others will give them a real shot at disruption.About Adam Nathan:Adam started his career at the White House, where he worked on policy initiatives. He moved to the private sector and had roles at Lyft, Apple, and Varo before co-founding Almanac. He did his undergrad at Duke and an MBA at Harvard.A word from our sponsor:Ripple Ventures is always focused on helping our founders and CEOs find the best partners to work with. But before we introduce any provider to our companies, we always make sure we try the product first. And when it comes to managing business expenses at Ripple, we were super excited when the team at Jeeves came knocking on our door.Jeeves helped get me and my team setup with physical and virtual credit cards in days. I was able to allow my teammates to expense items in multiple currencies allowing them to pay for anything, anywhere at any time. We weren’t asked for any personal guarantees or pay any setup or annual fees either. Not only does Jeeves save us time, but they also give us up to 3% cashback on our purchases including expenses like Google, Facebook or AWS every month. The best part,  Jeeves puts up the cash, and you settle up once every 30 days, unlike some other corporate card companies that make you pre-pay every month. Jeeves offers a truly all-in-one expense management corporate card program for international startups and we at Tank Talks could not be more excited to partner with them. Celebrating a victory this week as the Seahawks improve to 4-3 and earn their third straight victory on the road. After seven games this season, Seattle still has six home games left on its schedule. And with the Seahawks coming out of the bye, many of us fans were wondering if Seattle could carry the momentum over from the win overseas against the Raiders. With the 28-14 win, the defense was able to hold off some late charges by Matt Stafford and the Lions. A 21-point second quarter allowed Seattle to grind out clock throughout most of the second half and a 14-point lead in the final minutes allowed punter Michael Dickson to take a risk on a play that was intended to run out clock before taking a safety. Instead, he ran from the very back of the end zone and turned upfield to get a first down to help cement the win. Adam Nathan of the UK Sea Hawkers joins Adam and Brandan this week to talk about the emergence of David Moore, a great showing by Chris Carson, and the continued efficiency of Russell Wilson in what turned out to be a record-breaking performance.

Dan and Tom are joined by Adam Nathan, here to bring you his fresh controversial views (sort of). We start with a quick look at the FA Cup semi final draw which sees us play Chelsea, yet again, at Wembley. Can the rumours suggesting Vorm will play be true, and if so, how much does that harm our chances? We move on to Southampton, and a nervy but crucial victory, particularly without Kane. Did we see any promise that we will fair better this time around without our top scorer and talisman? And if we do, how much will we owe the increasingly influential Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen? We look at Alderweireld, Winks and Vertonghen too. It's international week, so we take a swipe at the schedule and wonder whether our form can survive a break. Burnley is previewed, with some not so fond memories included, and listener questions are answered including whether or not this is Vertonghen's best season to date. COYS.

This week, Dan is off in Monaco so Tom speaks to Adam Nathan and Phil (@singlemaltsuds) about the glorious de-panting of West Ham in the London Derby. We wonder what West Ham fans think 'happened again' means, why they seem to exist purely to make us feel better, and whether Harry Kane will ever stop scoring against teams from the Capital. We also discuss the brilliant debut of Harry Winks and where he fits in long-term. It's not all roses though, as the skewed formation that simply didn't work for 88 minutes is picked apart piece by piece, including Janssen's inclusion and Son being benched. Dan gives us a brief but sexy update from France, including injury news on big players, and we discuss the Monaco and Chelsea double-header that could define our season already.
