Welcome to your weekly news update, New Year's edition! Let's take a look at everything that's happened this year including drones for good, the don't be that guy compilation, drone regulation, Pilot Institute updates and of course new drones, starting with the Autel EVO Max.... We also reported on some Drones For Good stories this year, starting with a teen who saved people in their car. And of course, the FAA was front and center on many of our updates this year, but also some states, like Tennessee banning non-NDAA drones. Let's not forget about everyone's favorite segment: Don't be that guy! Starting with the guy who flew over the Bengals game in 2022. There were also a few surprises with Airmap shutting down their LAANC service, Amazon having a lot of issues keeping employees on board, and Skydio quitting the consumer drone business. But on the bright side, we accomplished a lot at Pilot Institute. We partnered with Influential Drones, Unmanned Tactical Group, and Axon Air to help provide even more training to our customers. We received a BVLOS waiver and submitted many more. We joined hand with the Drone Advocacy Alliance to help push back on non-sensical anti-drone regulation. We partnered with Aloft to provide the Air Aware to recreational pilots in preparation of the expected retirement of the current B4UFLY app. Then we travelled the country to various tradeshows: the Texas Robotic Summit in Burnitt TX, Sun N Fun in Lakeland Florida, AUVSI in Denver, FliteFest in Ohio, EAA Air Venture in Oshkosh WI, Commercial UAV Expo in Las Vegas, two back to back events in Colorado with the Colorado Round Up and the Colorado AirShow, and AZ Drone Fest in Phoenix AZ. We published 14 new courses, including 8 new drones courses such as the Skydio 2 and X2, DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise, Air 3, Mini 4, Inspire 3, the Evo Max 4T, and the Part 107 Waiver course. We end the year having trained 88,000 remote Pilots to date, 295,000 students totaling 506,000 course enrollments, 7.3 million lectures completed throughout our courses (that's 1 lecture every 4 seconds), 30,000 free registration stickers, 37,000 members in our Facebook groups, 128,000 subs on the various social media channels, and 6,800 WINGS credits issued on the FAASafety website. Needless to say, none of this would have been possible without all of you. A big THANK YOU for your continuous support, my team and I certainly appreciate it. We aren't slowing down, we are already working on some very cool projects for 2024 and we hope to release the first one later this month! Happy New Year, fly safe, and see you next year!

Welcome to "Your Drone Questions Answered" with John Dickow from Drone Launch Academy. In this episode, we dive into the importance of Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) for drone pilots. David Young, founder of Drone Launch Academy, joins us to explain TFRs, why they're imposed, and how to stay informed.TFRs are airspace areas where all aircraft, including drones, are prohibited. Violating TFRs can lead to serious consequences, as shown by a recent incident. For instance, during a college football game, the FAA imposed a TFR around the stadium. A drone pilot ignored it, causing disruptions, arrests, and potential criminal charges.David explains that TFRs are issued via NOTAMs (Notices to Airmen) by the FAA. Drone pilots can check the FAA's website or use apps like ALOFT or AirMap for TFR information. It's crucial to follow these rules and regulations. Recreational pilots should take the free TRUST certificate test, while those engaged in commercial work should obtain a Remote Pilot Certificate (Part 107).The main lesson: Never fly your drone in a TFR. Stay informed and fly responsibly. Submit your drone questions on YDQA.io for more insights and remember to subscribe for future episodes. See you in the skies!

AirMap has been in the news over the years and more recently for losing their ability to issue LAANC requests and wanting to monetize on the airspace access. https://www.zdnet.com/article/mergers-pave-way-for-scaling-drone-delivery/ DRL is now an FAA-accredited drone event organizer. DRL will help to oversee UAS events to ensure safety. “We're honored the FAA has accredited DRL as the first UAS event organization, and we're excited to participate in the FAA's PSP program to ensure safety is the priority at all UAS events,” said DRL COO Ashley Ellefson. “We look forward to sharing our expertise in drone-event safety more widely with the industry and continuing to work with venue organizers to curate safe and spectacular drone racing experiences through the most unique and incredible spaces.” Kenji Sugahara has received the first 55lb+ exemption using only a part 107. This paves the way into part 107 operators potentially receiving waivers to operate aircraft that weigh more than 55lbs. Currently, part 107 operations are limited to aircraft less than 55lbs. Fears of more expensive GPS appear to not be an issue for transmitters and Standard RID. With this change however, comes the possibility that cellphone's GPS may not suffice for standard RID. An increase in cost however is unlikely, as WAAS GPS units are within $5 of other GPS units currently in use on unmanned aircraft.

There is probably nobody better suited to ask about drones of the future and what we should hope for, expect and think about as consumers and leaders for the world of 2030.Ben's view is that drones will help solve urban over-crowding, bring services and products to rural areas in ways only big cities dwellers have experiences and also widen or perspectives on personal transportation. A major test of last-mile drone delivery, direct-seeding rice with a drone, a drone-centric kiosk you can build yourself, and a webinar to learn the BVLOS regulatory landscape. UAV News Last Mile Drone Delivery: Testing the Limits of Commercial Operations DroneUp partnered with Virginia’s Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) and UPS on a project to quickly evaluate the concept of last-mile drone delivery. They wanted to see how unmanned aerial systems could assist with critical delivery during times of crisis. On the vacant campus of St. Paul’s College, in Lawrenceville, Virginia, a group of pilots flew over 200 flights under a scripted plan, operating under part 107 rules, with industry-standard drones. The flights simulated the delivery of 1.275-pound payloads of medical and other critical supplies in city-like conditions. Data was collected with respect to operational capacities, airspace deconfliction, operator safety, processes, policies, and training. Tom Walker, DroneUp’s CEO, said, “DroneUp’s drone delivery exercise was aimed at learning what is possible to do safely and effectively today while gathering data to overcome seemingly impossible obstacles in the near future.”  For more, see the 56-page report, DroneUp Resources Operation Last-Mile: Critical Drone Delivery Report. XAG Introduces Rice Seeding Drone XAG is a Chinese company focused on agricultural technology. In April 2020, they organized a rice direct-seeding demonstration where two workers spread 5kg of rice seeds through a muddy rice paddy. Following that, a XAG drone repeated the same task. The difference in planing time was significant. Raspberry Pi-based Kiosk Display Shares Weather, FAA Advisories for Drones A project from Sky Horse Tech uses a Raspberry Pi to power a custom drone-centric kiosk. The kiosk pulls in local weather data and FAA advisories through AirMap and MapBox. The data cycles every 30 seconds and is refreshed every 5 minutes. The kiosk uses a 32” display, a $35 Raspberry Pi 3 Model B or newer, some free software, and weather and FAA advisory APIs. Ben Marcus is the Co-Founder and Chairman of Airmap, a company that develops the digital infrastructure, standards, and services for drones to fly safely at scale. Basically they create the digital highways that allow for drones to fly. He grew up near an airport and was always fascinated with aviation.    He became a pilot, a flight instructor and eventually a flight test engineer who certified planes. And it was while he was learning to fly that he began his journey to come up with the idea for AirMap.    Ben says, “When I was a flight instructor flying over Los Angeles, I used to fly every day, and have a student next to me, look down at the freeways, and they're jammed packed with people. These cars are just stopped, and I felt so bad for all these miserable people stuck in traffic and I'm the only one up here in the sky. And I was like, "Why is there not more people in the sky with me?" And so, I've dedicated my life and my career to helping extend the benefits of flight to more and more people in their daily lives.”   So what do drones have to do with the future of work? The fact is drones are already being used in a lot of industries to help with cost savings, employee safety, and training. Ben gave an example of how the telecommunications industry is using drones to help with the process of inspecting their antennas. This process is usually dangerous for human workers as well as time consuming, but now the drones are easily and safely able to take video of the equipment that employees can then review to ensure everything is working properly.     In the future we will also see drones used in more science fiction-like ways. Ben believes that drones will have a huge impact on the world of talent because we will be able to fly to work. This will change how organizations think about where to put their headquarters and how individual employees think about where to live.    “If you can fly to work, you can avoid all of that lost productivity, all of that expense, and you can basically live where you want. If you can fly at 100 miles an hour instead of being stuck in traffic at 20 miles an hour, you could live five times further away and have the same commute time. So I actually think that this is gonna lead to a de-urbanization trend and I think it will counter a lot of the negative consequences that have come from urbanization. I think we can have a lot more green space, we need far fewer parking lots and fewer roads. We can have a much more environmentally sustainable way of life going forward. So that's a really exciting future.”   Ben’s advice to business leaders is if you haven’t started working with drones yet and implementing them in ways across your organization, you should start now, because your competitors are most likely already working with drones.    “Many of these large enterprises that have been experimenting with drones are now moving from an experimentation phase into a scaling phase where they maybe have had a drone initiative in their innovation department and they're now moving that across the enterprise and figuring out how they can really make this a part of their workflow, how the data that's collected from drones can be integrated into their ERP systems, how do you really make this a part of the fabric of how our company operates? That's happening now in a lot of businesses across lots of industries all around the world. So, it's not too late, but you should get started right now.” What you will learn: How Ben got involved with drones and AirMap What do drones have to do with work, jobs, careers and the business world The impact drones will have on the world of talent Some cool examples of how drones could affect our daily lives How to ensure drone safety What listeners need to know or think about when it comes to drones

The Byte - A Byte-sized podcast about Containers, Cloud, and Tech

Website - https://k8s.af/Henning Jacobs Head of Dev Productivity Zalando- https://twitter.com/try_except_ Nordstrom - 101 to crash your cluster Target Cascading Failures Moonlight Skyscanner Zalando Monzo public Post Mortem Episode TranscriptionWelcome back to The Byte. In this episode, we're going to be learning about Kubernetes failure stories, and I'm not talking about Kubernetes as a product failing, but more actually clusters failing in production and lessons learned, so postmortems.A gentleman by the name of Henning Jacobs, Head of Development Productivity at Zalando, and his Twitter is @tryexcept, which is pretty cool, his mission was actually to learn from other companies and how other people actually dealt with issues and documented these issues and what was their next steps in finding the way forward, and I guess his motivation was from KubeCon 2017 and Nordstrom, giant retailer in the US, talked about 101 ways to crash a cluster, which is quite interesting, and he took it upon himself to start making a public repo and GitHub to list all the failures that he could find and start listing them out and publicly telling people what happened and how to resolve these issues.Companies, such as Zalando is one of them, Skyscanner, Target, Nordstrom, Toyota, Monzo, AirMap, there's a list of about 20, 25 stories, very, very good. The stories that I took a look at just for me, Target was one of the big ones. Target's an American retailer, and they talk about how their cascading failure from logging side cars caused so many elections in Consul, it actually took Consul offline, so the logging was actually congesting the mesh traffic so much that Consul couldn't even register a new note. This is a major deal. This is a production system, major, major retailer, and it just goes offline. It has a cascading effect because as more services kept trying to elect, it just kept going further and further down the rabbit hole of chaos, and the fix was actually to enable encryption on the Consul, which then threw out all the bad messages. It's a really cool story.Daniel Woods, the gentleman in charge of architecture at Target, detailing exactly what happened, their steps to remedy it, and what their plan is in the future to get away from these types of problems. The other story is Moonlight, and moonlight is like moonlighting for jobs. It's like a job portal, quite interesting. This was actually another failure story where the scheduler was assigning multiple pods with high CPU on the same node, and then this node actually went into kernel panic, and it crashed the node, and the scheduler then took these same pods again and tried to reschedule them on another node, and just crashed the next node, and you can see it just kept cascading and getting worse and worse as more and more nodes went offline. It became so much an issue that it just huge issue at this production level. What fixed it was setting some anti-infinity rules and then the nodes started repairing themselves. Again, a great postmortem on this, as well.Skyscanner, I don't know if you know Skyscanner or not. It's one of these apps where you can track airplanes and see what's going on, quite a cool app. Well, this one was a new flag was available in the templating. They implemented it, and it just took, rescheduled all their pods. This is quite major. One flag change basically took down their production environment, pretty bad. They didn't catch it at testing. They did all their research on it to see what was actually this flag was doing, and it slipped through the cracks. They fixed it. They actually opened up a GitHub issue pull request, and they fixed it, they documented it, and they detailed it out.As I was looking through these issues and I was researching everything, GitHub actually went offline. I don't know if it's a coincidence or not, but quite interesting.Nonetheless, we can learn a lot from these postmortems. I'm a big fan of postmortems. It comes from the SRU world, Site Reliability Engineering from Google, and how we learn from these, and it's from others. When people share their stories, we understand. Hey, when this happens, this what we should look for and resolve these issues.Zalando, actually Henning Jacobs is from Zalando. He actually wrote his failure stories, which was pretty recent, where core DNS went offline, and a single application actually starts querying DNS, and every DNS lookup resulted in 10 queries, so you can see it cascaded overnight. It just kept on going further and further down the rabbit hole, once again because it just exponentially starts taking DNS services offline. One application was basically doing a denial service to their entire cluster. Their fix was basically better monitoring and more isolation of the services.I highly recommend you take a look at this Kubernetes failure stories even if you don't use Kubernetes. It's great how they write these postmortems, how they document everything and keep everything public. Some companies even actually make a GitHub issue and publish the issue and how it's actually running. That's quite interesting, as well.Give some feedback. Look at it, and learn from others' failures and how we can better work as a community, learning from our failures and communicate to the rest of the community how to do better. That's all for this episode. We'll see you next time.

News Roundup U.S./China appear to be backing away from trade war The U.S. and China appear to be backing away from a telecom trade war. The U.S. had issued strict sanctions against China-based telecommunications manufacturers including Huawei and ZTE due in part to fears that China was using the devices for spying purposes, and in part due to the countries’ respective efforts to dominate in the buildout of 5G. But according to Chinese officials, the sanctions would ruin ZTE, so it urged the Trump administration to reconsider. Trump tweeted Monday that he has now asked the Commerce Department to look into easing up on some of those sanctions in order to protect jobs that would be affected by the ZTE sanctions. The net neutrality rules are set to expire on June 11th. The full Senate will vote on the resolution on Wednesday, and it seems likely to pass, since one Republican—Susan Collins from Maine—has agreed to support the petition, and an ailing Senator McCain is unlikely to cast a vote. But the petition would still need to clear the House, where Republicans are in the majority by a margin of 236-193. And president Trump would also need to sign it. Why does David strongly dislike convertible notes? Why does he believe that they are worse for not only investor but founders too? In what rare cases do they make sense? Why are they completely ridiculous in multi-million $ deals? 4.) Why does David believe that pro-rata rights have become such a mess? How can founders honour the agreements with their early investors and satiate the ownership appetite of A funds? How would David navigate this if he were a founder today? 5.) Why does David believe the biggest asymettry in VC is the DD that founders engage with, in comparison to that of VC on Founder DD? How should founders structure this DD on investors? What is the right framework? What is the crucial question to ask? Rotorcraft perching, recovery, and takeoff News FAA Tests FBI Drone Detection System at JFK The FAA conducted tests of the effectiveness of an FBI UAS detection system at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York. Five different rotorcraft and fixed wing UAS participated in about 40 separate tests. Also involved in the tests were the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of Justice, Queens District Attorney's Office, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The Griffiss International Airport test site in Rome, NY, provided expertise in planning the individual tests as well as the flight commander for the tests and two of the UAS used. FAA Releases Drone Registration Location Data In response to a number of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, the FAA released a spreadsheet showing the number of UAS registrations by country, state/province/region, city, and postal code. Almost 40,000 entries for “Hobbyist” registrations, and nearly 5,000 “Non-Hobbyist” registrations. Names and addresses of registrants are not part of this database, and will only be made available by registration number. Heatmap of hobbyist UAS registrations Heatmap of non-hobbyist UAS registrations We'd like to thank Airmap.com for providing the heat maps. Find the AirMap for Drones app in the iTunes store and use it to access low-altitude airspace advisories, create flights, file digital notices, manage aircraft, and more. Now drones can go on and on: Unmanned aircraft refuel autonomously in MID-AIR, meaning they can carry out longer missions Chinese researchers have developed a method of autonomous aerial refueling where the “tanker” uses cameras to determine the position of the “receiver.” The tanker then flies to the receiving drone and refuels it through a boom. Microspines Make It Easy for Drones to Perch on Walls and Ceilings Quadrotors have limited flight duration, so the ability to “perch” or land for extended periods of time would be beneficial, particularly for applications where the operator wants to collect data over time. Stanford's Biomimetics and Dexterous Manipulation Laboratory has been working on perching technology that would allow a small drone to land on a wall using an opposing gripping system. The Drone Manufacturers Alliance is formed, a Digital Notice and Awareness System for airports starts, the Micro UAS Aviation Rulemaking Committee report is published, a satellite navigation system competition begins, and a new facial-recognition drone is available. News Drone coalition splits as DJI, GoPro faction quits The Small UAV Coalition was formed to advocate “for law and policy changes to permit the operation of small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) beyond the line-of-sight, with varying degrees of autonomy, for commercial, consumer, recreational and philanthropic purposes.” Now DJI, GoPro, 3DR, and Parrot have left the Coalition to form The Drone Manufacturers Alliance to focus on small drone and consumer issues. The Alliance hasn't yet developed official policy statements, but they do say they the Alliance “... will serve as the voice for drone manufacturers and our customers across civilian, governmental, recreational, commercial, nonprofit and public safety applications. We will advocate for policies that promote innovation and safety, and create a practical and responsible regulatory framework.” Furthermore, “The Drone Manufacturers Alliance believes a carefully balanced regulatory framework requires input from all stakeholders and must recognize the value and necessity of continued technological innovation. By highlighting innovation and emphasizing education, we intend to work with policymakers to ensure drones continue to be safely integrated into the national airspace.” AirMap and AAAE Launch UAS Notice System AirMap and the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) have released the Digital Notice and Awareness System (D-NAS), designed to allow airport operators to be aware of drone flights in the area. D-NAS lets UAS operators transmit encrypted digital flight notices through a mobile device app to the airport's operations center. The “flight plan” shows up on an airport computer with the planned location of the flight, radius, height, and duration. The AP has learned a government-sponsored panel is backing standards that could allow commercial drones The Micro Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Aviation Rulemaking Committee (the “ARC”) has delivered its report on proposed rules for flying over populated areas. The stated objective of the ARC was “to consider recommendations for a performance-based standard that would allow for micro UAS to be operated over people who are not directly participating in the operation of the UAS or under a covered structure,” which would ultimately contribute to an enforceable rule imposed by the FAA. The Committee report Micro Unmanned Aircraft Systems Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC):  ARC Recommendations Final Report, [PDF] proposes to divide small UAS into four categories: Under Category 1, a small UAS may operate over people if the weight (including accessories/payload, e.g., cameras) is 250 grams or less. The ARC believes that the level of risk of injury posed by this category of UAS is so low that no performance standards and no operational restrictions beyond those imposed by the proposed part 107 are necessary. Under Categories 2, 3, and 4, a small UAS may operate over people if it does not exceed the impact energy threshold specified for each category, as certified by the manufacturer using industry consensus test methods, and if its operator complies with operational restrictions specified for each category. Because the level of risk increases between Categories 2, 3, and 4, the performance-based standards and operational restrictions are scaled-up in each category to mitigate the increased risks. Category 2 applies to the larger multirotor UAS that are common for recreational and commercial drones. The UAS may operate over people if the manufacturer certifies to the FAA that the UAS does not, in the most probable failure modes, exceed the typical or likely impact energy threshold, and if it complies with industry consensus perfor...

DJI and 3D Robotics bring real-time airspace restrictions to UAV software, a UAV flagship store is planned to open, ArcadiaSky opens a marketplace for commercial UAV operators, FAA gives a UAV registration warning, and another municipality regulates drone flights. News DJI Introduces New GeoFencing System For Its Drones DJI plans to introduce a dynamic geofencing system that continuously provides updated airspace information to the operator. Data comes from Geospatial Environment Online (GEO). Drone operators will see temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) in real time, including forest fires, major stadium events, VIP travel, and restrictions around prisons, power plants, and other restricted areas such as national parks. However, operators with verified DJI accounts could temporarily unlock or self-authorize flights in some of those locations, but not in sensitive national-security locations. This to accommodate the authorized applications and provide accountability if the flight is later under investigation. DJI intends to start this in December, first in North America and Europe via a DJI Go app update, and also a drone firmware update. GEO is powered by geospatial data from Santa Monica, California-based AirMap, which calls itself “the leading provider of airspace information and services for drones. AirMap's real-time services are available to manufacturers through an API and through an SDK for application developers.” Just as we were recording this episode, a video was posted from Drone World Expo titled DJI Technology Policy Announcement by Brendan Schulman, VP of Policy & Legal Affairs. 3DR Collaborates with AirMap to Integrate Flight Safety Zone Software into the Solo App 3D Robotics will also integrate AirMap's safety information into its Solo smart drone app. CEO and co-founder Chris Anderson says, “...we want to make flying as safe as it is easy. Supplementing the Solo app with AirMap's robust and reliable real-time airspace information allows us to increase education with a seamless and enjoyable drone experience.” From the 3DR press release: “If Solo users open their Solo app in a restricted area, they'll see a warning. Users can then tap the warning to bring up a map that displays any airspace information in the area. This airspace information includes real-time Temporary Flight Restrictions that may be established in the areas around wildfires, major sporting events and other sensitive places. The Solo app will contain basic airspace information: federal guidelines (e.g., five miles from an airport); national parks; airbases, etc.” The World's Biggest Commercial Drone Maker is Opening a Flagship Store In December, DJI plans to open an 8,600 square foot flagship store in Shenzhen, China. A DJI spokesman said, “We want more people to see and touch our products.” Start-up ArcadiaSky creates marketplace for commercial UAV hire Australian company ArcadiaSky wants to make it easier to find licenced commercial UAV operators. After two months, they have 180 drone operators in 74 locations in Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. They've received over 1,300 requests for quotes. ArcadiaSky describes a free, three-step process: Define your requirements on a request for quote Choose your pilot based on your requirements You are put in contact with the drone operator FAA: Think Twice about "Drone Registration" Firms The FAA has issued a statement saying UAV owners should wait for the registration process to be announced before they work with any company that offers to help you with registration. At least one company is offering this kind of service. The FAA wants “a streamlined unmanned aircraft registration process that will be simple and easy to complete… The Task Force ...is working on recommendations for a system that is similar to registering any newly purchased product with its manufacturer…” Chicago City Council Approves Ban On Drones
