Allison Josephs interviews Kayla Haber-Goldstein, author of Questioning the Answers, to discuss this Sunday's Rabbinic Asifa to tackle the Agunah crisis and more.
Kayla Haber-Goldstein addresses the issue of Agunot, women trapped in marriages due to their husbands' refusal to grant a Get (Jewish divorce). Kayla organized an Asifa, a gathering of Rabbonim, to educate them on the complexities of get refusal and encourage them to take action within their communities. She is pioneering a movement to emphasize the critical importance of this issue with Rabbis to understand the severity of the issue, steps that can be taken and providing guidance to couples navigating divorce to prevent escalation and potential get refusal.Kayla underscores the need for compassion and understanding towards Rabbis and acknowledged the challenging nature of their roles and the pressures they face in serving their communities. By raising awareness and educating Rabbis, progress can be made towards resolving the Agunah crisisKayla and her husband Rabbi Shmuel Goldstein, currently serve as the Associate Rabbi and Rebbetzin in Congregation Beth Tefillah in Paramus NJ. Together with their two children they run an open home at which anyone who needs a Shabbat, a dinner or a listening ear is welcome. Besides for speaking engagements and events that Questioning The Answers put on, Kayla has recently become involved in the Agunah crisis. Hi friends, we're on hiatus for the fall. To tide you over, we're putting up some favorite episodes from our archives. Enjoy! ---- [originally aired June 23, 2021] You've no doubt heard that—as humans—our sense of smell is, well, kind of pathetic. The idea goes all the way back to Aristotle, that we have advanced senses—especially sight and hearing—and then lowly, underdeveloped ones—taste and smell. It's an idea that has been repeated and elaborated over and over, throughout Western intellectual history. Along with it comes a related notion: that smells are nearly impossible to talk about, that odors simply can't be captured in words. These ideas may be old, but are they actually true? A number of researchers would say they're ripe for reconsideration. And my guest is one such researcher, Asifa Majid. She's Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of York in the UK. For a decade now, Asifa's been pioneering a new wave of research on human olfaction, especially how it interfaces with language, thought, and culture. In this conversation we talk about the general notion that some kinds of experience are harder to put into words than others. We discuss Asifa's fieldwork with hunter-gatherer groups in the Malay peninsula, as well as her studies with wine experts in the west. We talk about whether learning special smell terms seems to sharpen one's ability to discriminate odors. And we venture beyond Asifa's own work, to touch on a bunch of recent highlights from the broader science of olfaction. This was such a fun conversation, folks! I've admired Asifa's work on this topic since her very first paper. She's a truly interdisciplinary thinker and, as you'll hear, she's got a nose for fun examples and deep questions. Without further ado, on to my conversation with Dr. Asifa Majid! Enjoy. A transcript of this episode is available here. Notes and links 3:40 – A paper on the 19th century rise of the myth that humans are poor smellers. 6:00 – A paper estimating that humans can discriminate possibly a trillion different odors. 7:30 – A theoretical paper by Dr. Majid and a collaborator on “differential ineffability” and the senses. 9:20 – Dr. Majid's collaborator in her work on Jahai, a Malaysian language, was Niclas Burenhult. 11:00 – A classic book on the idea of “basic terms” in the domain of color, which provide an analogy for basic terms in the domain of smell. 12:30 – A first paper by Dr. Majid and Niclas Burenhult describing the language of olfaction in Jahai. 14:45 – Dr. Majid's first experiment comparing odor naming (and color naming) in Jahai and English. 20:00 – Dr. Majid has also examined smell lexicons in several other languages, including Seri, Thai, Maniq, and Cha'palaa. 25:40 – A follow-up study by Dr. Majid and a collaborator on two groups within Malaysia who contrast in subsistence mode. 29:30 – A paper detailing cultural practices surrounding smell among the Jahai. 31:00 – Dr. Majid discusses the factors shaping cultural variation in olfaction (as well as a number of other interesting issues) in her most recent review paper. 39:00 – The “deodorization” hypothesis was discussed in a classic book on the cultural history of aroma. 39:40 – In a recent study, Dr. Majid and collaborators failed to find evidence that the frequency of smell language has fallen off since industrialization. 45:50 – Dr. Majid led a study comparing 20 languages across the world in terms of how expressible their speakers found different sensory experiences. 53:00 – Some possible reasons for the general trend toward the ineffability of smell are considered in Dr. Majid's recent review paper. 57:00 – Along with her collaborators, Dr. Majid has examined the smell-naming abilities of wine experts. See one paper here. 1:02:45 – A recent paper by Dr. Majid and colleagues showing that wine experts' smell-naming abilities are not dependent on “thinking in” language. 1:05:35 –Some evidence from “verbal interference” tasks suggests that, when carrying out color discrimination tasks, people rely on language in the moment. 1:09:00 – The Odeuropa project. 1:10:20 – The website of Noam Sobel's lab. Dr. Majid's end of show recommendations: What the Nose Knows, by Avery Gilbert The Philosophy of Olfactory Perception, by Andreas Keller Aroma: The Cultural History of Smell, by Constance Classen, David Howes, and Anthony Synott Neuroenology, by Gordon Shepard Cork Dork, by Bianca Bosker You can keep up with Dr. Majid on Twitter (@asifa_majid). Angry angry angry. Megha, Asifa and Hila are angry. They know it is one of the things that drives them all for very different reasons. Sharing that anger will be crucial to leading the new generation. Not for them the usual patronising put down, women shouldn't be angry, dont be so emotional. But they are being strategic with their anger. This is the second episode capturing the zeitgeist as the 24 women set off on the expedition to “find an approach to leadership that resonates with women” all women of all ages.

In Half of Faith: American Muslim Marriage and Divorce in the Twenty-First Century, readers find a wide range of texts on Muslim Americans' experiences with questions of marriage and divorce in an effort to do what is deemed Islamically acceptable. This exciting reader, which brings together previously published as well as new content, includes the broad themes of wedding, marriage, and divorce in the Muslim American experience. More specifically, the reader aims to explore the diversity in Islamic legal and theoretical thought, marriage and divorce practices, marriage contracts, wedding customs, and related issues. In today's very vibrant and engaging conversation, I speak with Kecia Ali, the editor of the reader, in addition to several contributors, who are Zahra Ayubi, Aminah McCloud, and Asifa Quraishi-Landes. Each scholar speaks on her contribution to the volume—Ayubi on divorce, Quraishi-Landes on marriage contracts and Islamic law, and McCloud on African American Muslim women as they transition to Islam, get married, and face issues of male guardianship. Further, we discuss why an Islamic marriage even matters to Muslims, and Kecia and Asifa share their views on fundamental issues with the Islamic marriage contract and whether, as Asifa suggests, it's possible to re-imagine the Islamic marriage contract as a partnership contract rather than a sales contract. The book, which is available for free, with a searchable PDF, through Boston University's website, will be of interest to scholars and researchers interested in questions of marriage and divorce generally but more specifically in the context of Islam; individual practicing Muslims who seek resources on nikaah contracts, Islamic law, and divorce; Muslim and other religious leaders who serve Muslim communities; and undergraduate and graduate students in women's and gender studies as well as religious studies courses. Shehnaz Haqqani is an Assistant Professor of Religion at Mercer University. She earned her PhD in Islamic Studies with a focus on gender from the University of Texas at Austin in 2018. Her dissertation research explored questions of change and tradition, specifically in the context of gender and sexuality, in Islam. She is currently working on a book project on Muslim women's marriage to non-Muslims in Islam. Shehnaz runs a YouTube channel called What the Patriarchy?! (WTP?!), where she vlogs about feminism and Islam in an effort to dismantle the patriarchy and uproot it from Islam (ambitious, she knows). She can be reached at haqqani_s@mercer.edu. She meets Asifa Majid, professor of language, communication and cultural cognition at the University of York. Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Chris Ledgard
Our guest this week is Asifa Lahore, who joins us to speak about her experience of coming out as transgender in the British Asian community and what she's learned over the 10 years since she became the UK's first Muslim Drag Queen. She gives her advice on what brands can do to support young LGBTQ+ people and shouts out the ones who are getting it right. You can also catch Asifa on our panel 'Marketing Beyond the Rainbow' at YMS21 LDN, coming up this September at London's Old Truman Brewery. Hi Everyone, today I have Casandra Brewton-Johnson here with me today! Casandra is an accomplished stop motion animator and the program director for ASIFA-South. Here is a bit about Casandra's art philosophy. Art is an organic process that is constantly challenging and pushing the boundaries of my comfort zone, but I cannot deny the absolute passion and joy that I feel when an idea blooms into fruition. Sometimes, that means incorporating my love of math and science in the form of fashioning playful puppets from simple character designs or fabricating Stop Motion sets from my imagination. In early 2021, Centrum hosted award-winning director, writer, and story artist, Brenda Chapman for a month-long residency. A few months later, Michelle Hagewood catches up with Chapman to revisit conversations started over that residency. Chapman reflects on the ups and downs of her long career at Disney, Dreamworks, and Pixar and shares her early influences and the threads that connect to her newest projects and endeavors. Brenda Chapman started her career as a story artist at Walt Disney Feature Animation in 1987, where she worked on several animated films including The Little Mermaid, and the Oscar nominated Beauty and the Beast. Chapman was the story supervisor on the original The Lion King, for which she won ASIFA’s Annie Award. She then helped launch DreamWorks Animation Studios, and co-directed the 1998 release of the Oscar winning Prince of Egypt. Chapman was the first woman to direct an animated feature for a major Hollywood studio. Joining Pixar Animation Studios in September 2003, Chapman created, wrote and directed Brave – inspired by her relationship with her daughter - for which she was the first woman to win an Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film of 2012. Her first live-action film, Come Away, starring David Oyelowo and Angelina Jolie, premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Chapman and her husband, filmmaker Kevin Lima (Enchanted, Disney’s Tarzan, A Goofy Movie), created ‘Twas Entertainment, which focuses on family entertainment. Currently, Chapman is writing a feature script for Gutsy Animations UK, executive producing on projects for ‘Twas, as well as working on a novel, a memoir and a children’s book.
You've no doubt heard that—as humans—our sense of smell is, well, kind of pathetic. Enjoy. She's Britain's first out Muslim drag queen, pushing the boundaries of what it means to be LGBT, South Asian and Muslim. As seen on Channel 4's groundbreaking documentary Muslim Drag Queens, it's Asifa Lahore! Hosted by Divina De Campo & Ricky Williams. Produced by Connor James.
Asifa Lahore is Britain’s first out Muslim drag queen, pushing the boundaries of what it means to be LGBT, South Asian and Muslim. Asifa came into the national spotlight in 2014 when she was censored by the Birmingham Central Mosque from discussing Islam and Homosexuality on BBC Free Speech. This caused uproar in the British press and allowed Lahore the rare opportunity to speak openly about the topic. Asifa featured in Channel 4’s groundbreaking documentary Muslim Drag Queens in 2015. Narrated by Sir Ian McKellen, it drew an audience of 1.1 million viewers. That same year, she received the Attitude Magazine Pride Award for activism and increasing visibility of the ‘Gaysian’ community and also judged the Independent's Rainbow List. Asifa's impassioned activism on intersectionality, race, sexual orientation, gender, disability and religion has led her to speak at prestigious institutions such as the Lost Lectures, Channel 4 Diversity Festival, Women of the World Festival, the British Library and the Oxford Union. She has also been the face of Channel 4's 2016 diversity campaign, 'True Colour TV' as well as one of the ambassadors for 'Open Letters to Queer Britain', a project aiming to create the UK's first LGBT+ museum in collaboration with Levi's UK, the Post office and Queer Britain. Asifa continues to promote and DJ at London's top Gaysian club nights, Club Kali and Disco Rani. Her musings on world events have been featured in Winq, Attitude, Gay Times, The Independent and IB Times as well as being featured and interviewed for countless publications worldwide. In 2019, Asifa walked the first LGBT catwalk at Pakistan Fashion Week London. This was a proud moment for her as a British Pakistani person. Asifa is also passionate about disability rights. She is severely sighted and suffers from Retinitis Pigmentosa, a rare genetic eye disease which causes progressive sight loss. Asifa's journey into the spotlight has been a deeply personal one through which she discovered her transgender identity and continues being a voice for intersectional Britain.
Asifa Lahore (she/her) an activist, performer and Britain’s first out Muslim drag queen. Gender Euphoria is a limited interview podcast series from Broccoli Content. Hana Walker-Brown speaks to contributors about when they feel most like themselves, what brings them joy and pleasure and their individual journeys to self-acceptance. #IAmEuphoric

Asifa Lahore is Britain’s first out Muslim drag queen. She is a proud British-Pakistani, Muslim, Transgender, Disabled artist, and performer. However, it’s important to understand that Asifa cannot be reduced to her identities. She embraces every part of her, finding the beauty in the intersections of who she is and creating art that validates those who have been misunderstood. Art that gives visibility to the stories that were never meant to fit into any binary. Produced by Saadia Khan Written by Sarah Doh, Saadia Khan Edited by Tom Whelan Music by Evan Ray Suzuki

Dosage compensation is an essential process to regulate the gene expression of the X-chromosome in female and male flies. Thereby the mechanism of regulation in humans and in drosophila is different. In humans one X-chromosome is randomly shut down in females compared to men, whereas in drosophila equilibrium is achieved by overexpression of the single X-chromosome in males. In this Episode our guest Dr. Asifa Akhtar provides information on her work on dosage compensation in drosophila melanogaster and how the MSL-complex, the Histone-acetyltransferase MOF work together in this process. Furthermore, she also talks about potential functions of those Proteins in the human system. This episode, hear me chat with the inspiring, gorgeous, eloquent Asifa Lahore. We talk about how she reconciles being gay and Muslim, doing drag while still adhering to religion. She's a fascinating person! Asifa is creating change & pushing boundaries everyday. She's carving out a path for many LGBT Muslims around the world. Her and I may not agree on religion, but she is exactly the kind of person I think needs to be propped up and supported. She's attacked and hated by both right wing Muslims and Westerners....who have issues with her identifying as both. She starred in a channel 4 documentary called Muslim Drag Queens. Here's a clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbSgJQZelWk And do check out her most famous song Punjabi Girl : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nS4P5uP2sCs ---- If you enjoy this show, please consider supporting via Patreon https://www.patreon.com/nicemangos Share, like, comment interact and leave an iTunes review! xx
