In this special Pride Month episode, we celebrate the incredible Black queer women who broke barriers and paved the way in the early 1900s. Join me as we delve into the lives of Ma Rainey, the “Mother of the Blues,” who sang openly about her relationships with women; Bessie Smith, the "Empress of the Blues," who lived her life unapologetically bisexual; and Gladys Bentley, the tuxedo-wearing Harlem Renaissance legend who defied gender norms. We also explore the stories of Josephine Baker, the iconic performer and civil rights activist, and Alberta Hunter, the celebrated blues and jazz singer. These trailblazing women faced double oppression but created their own support networks and left an indelible mark on culture and society. Tune in to hear their powerful stories of resilience, courage, and Black queer magic. #PrideMonth #BlackQueerMagic #Trailblazers #LGBTQHistory #BlackHistory #Resilience Love these short history episodes? Welcome to Episode 164, y'all! June's not the only LGBTQIA+ month. Sure -- we love Pride, but October is also LGBTQIA+ month. October is LGBTQ+ history month, giving us some time to reflect on our communities history, struggles, successes, and PROGRESS! If we have learned anything the last 6 years or so, no matter how far we have come we cannot rest on our laurels and take a long pause to celebrate (and nobody throws a celebration better than the queer folk, amiright?). This week Mark & Casey are honoring LGBTQIA+ history month by honoring some trailblazers in our history! In this, the inaugural year for the Painted Trash Trailblazers episode we are celebrating trailblazers from our communal history who have made huge impacts in the community and world as a whole. And like our trunts, we are going big for our first year of honorees! The Boys are honoring six -- yes, 6 -- folx who created a legacy of activism and visibility. Who is making the list?? You gotta listen to find out!Of course -- we are gonna spill some tea, and talk some trash (maybe not too much about the Trailblazers) as The Boys are known to do. In this week's Pick-up, Casey is announcing a return for one night only, a spa day, and a fancy cocktail evening while Mark break a nail while binging a series. Then, in a much abbreviated Trash Talk, from the headlines, somebody got fired for drinking on the job and you won't believe this story! As usual, Casey & Mark are giving you recommendations (or will they be wreck-o-mendations) this week you will most certainly want to check out. It's a celebratory (somebody wearing their summer suit separate? The one with the sheer sleeve with the side satchel?) reflective, and important conversation this week! So getcha a nice pour of port vintage and pull up a plush chair to the circle. It's time to paint!=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-Let The Boys of Painted Trash know your thoughts on this week's topics and episode! What street festivals do you attend? Do you like street fests? What is your favorite festival??Have a topic idea or story you recommend for Trash Talk, be sure to send it in to our email or through the "contact us" on our website.Follow us on:Instagram: instragram.com/paintedtrashpodTwitter: twitter.com/paintedtrashpodFacebook: facebookcom/paintedtrashpodcastDon't forget to click Subscribe and/or Follow and leave us a review!email: paintedtrashpodcast@gmail.comweb: www.paintedtrashpodcast.com

Happy Pride Month 2023! Being part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ family comes with a beautiful community of people that have unwavering love and respect for one another but unfortunately it's not always sunshines and rainbows. The hardships and struggles they face are ones that frankly straight people would never truly understand but should continue to do their best to educate themselves and stand up with their peers as allies. Thankfully, it's slowly but surely gotten better as the years have gone on with the help of individuals who dared to stand up to the status quo and shake things up for the better to fight for a better tomorrow. So join Tuong and Queer Icons themselves Hayley Kellett, Kez Vicario-Robinson, and Aashay Dalvi as we end pride month by celebrating Top 5 Gay Icons! This week we're talking about the importance of Queer Icons and Representation as it relates to the Late Bloomer Experience. Queer heroes and representation have an almost endless ability to positively impact late blooming queer folks, especially since so many of us "learned how to be straight" from the overabundance of straight storylines in movies, TV shows, books, and so on. Christine Jorgensen began gender reassignment surgery in Copenhagen on 24th September 1951. The New York Daily News later heralded the event with a headline splash - “Ex-GI Becomes Blonde Beauty!” - thereby creating America's first transgender celebrity.Writing to friends, she said: “As you can see by the enclosed photos, taken just before the operation, I have changed a great deal. But it is the other changes that are so much more important. Remember the shy, miserable person who left America? Well, that person is no more and, as you can see, I'm in marvellous spirits.”In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider how surprisingly tolerant her parents and much of the media were; how she was strong-armed into showbiz but used the notoriety to campaign for trans rights; and reveal that - amongst her many memoirs - she also penned a Scandinavian cookbook...Further Reading:• ‘Christine Jorgensen – Queer Icon' (Queer Icons, 2020): https://queericons.home.blog/2020/02/27/christine-jorgensen/• ‘The Hour Magazine with Gary Collins: guest Christine Jorgensen' (1980s): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDlGUeF1Bg0• ‘Dec. 1, 1952: Ex-GI Becomes Blonde Beauty' (WIRED, 2010): https://www.wired.com/2010/12/1201first-sex-change-surgery/For bonus material and to support the show, visit Patreon.com/RetrospectorsWe'll be back on Monday! We focused on a group of people who we feel don't get the recognition they deserve: queer black icons. In particular, we highlighted the lives of activist, Marsha P. Johnson, and esteemed writer, James Baldwin. We told their stories, celebrated their accomplishments, and talked about the legacies that they left behind. We hope you enjoy it! Happy Black History Month!
