Der ESC gilt heute als eine der grössten Veranstaltungen für die LGBTQ-Community. Der Grundstein dafür wurde schon 1961 von Jean Claude Pascal gelegt, der ein Lied auf die Bühne bracht, das man als Hymne gegen Homophobie interpretieren konnte. Seither folgten unzählige weitere solcher Auftritte. Angefangen hat das alles schon relativ früh. Bereits in den 60er-Jahren fanden schwule Männer in allen beteiligten Ländern den ESC wichtig, sagt ESC-Experte Jan Feddersen. Den Auftritt von Jean-Claude Pascal findet er mutig. Denn im Jahr seines ESC-Sieges war Homosexualität zwar nicht mehr verboten, aber noch immer verpönt. Im Jahr 1998 gewann Dana International, die für Israel antrat und als erste Transfrau an einem ESC teilnahm. 2014 schliesslich gewann Conchita Wurst den ESC. Es gibt viele weitere solcher Beispiele. Noch im Oktober 2022 trafen wir bei der OGAE Germany-Gala in München die Eurovision Song Contest-Siegerin Emilija Kokić aus Kroatien. Sie gewann 1989 mit der Band Riva und dem Song "Rock Me" für Jugoslawien, ein Land, das heute nicht mehr existiert. Im Jänner 2023 wiederum trafen wir Vincent Bueno in Wien beim Club-Treffen "Eurovision Live" der OGAE-Austria. Er erzählt über sein Album "Soul Therapy" und seine neue Entdeckung: Comedy!Emiljia Kokić erzählt von ihrer Teilnahme mit Riva beim Song Contest in Lausanne und wie der Jugoslawien-Krieg kurze Zeit nach dem Sieg die gemeinsame Geschichte der Band gestoppt hat. Und wie sie nach dem Krieg ihre Solo-Karriere startete.Vincent Bueno erzählt vom Prozess, wie es zum Eurovision-Auftritt kam, sollte er doch eigentlich mit dem selbst-geschriebenen "Alive" 2020 in Rotterdam starten. Paul Oscar aus Island mit "Minn Hinste Dans". Gewonnen hat damals eine Frau, die heute in einer gleichgeschlechtlichen Beziehung lebt: Katrina. Ein Jahr später gewann mit Dana International die erste Person, die trans ist.

Eurovision 1998 winner Dana International has a lot to celebrate. 2023 marks the 25th anniversary of her Eurovision win in Birmingham. It also saw the debut of her reality series "Dana Kama," which ended its run on Yes TV on May 7. She tells our William Lee Adams about the difficulties of filming a reality series, recounts the difficult road to Eurovision (including backlash from Orthodox religious figures), shares her thoughts on her Eurovision 2011 song "Ding Dong" and more.

Before even landing at Eurovision in Birmingham, Israel's Dana International had to stare down her critics: The Orthodox community at home wanted the transgender singer banned from the contest. Conservative politicians called her an abomination, but European viewers embraced her — naming her their winner in the first contest that mandated televoting. To mark the 25th anniversary of her win, this episode looks at queerness on the Eurovision stage and how the contest reflects a radical shift in public attitudes toward LGBTQ+ people across Europe. Long before gay marriage was legalized and transgender rights were encoded in law anywhere on the continent, the contest was already celebrating marginalized voices. “My victory proves God is on my side,” she said after her surprise win. “Try to accept me — I am what I am.”

Neues gibt es auch von Sam Ryder ("Somebody") und - besonders berührend - von Jamala. "Thank you, Stranger" ist ein Dankeschön für die Hilfe, die die Kriegsflüchtlinge aus der Ukraine in Europa erfahren durften.Verabschieden müssen wir uns von Svika Pick, dem König des israelischen Pops, der zahlreiche Beiträge eingereicht - und mit Dana Internationals Titel "Diva" den Songcontest 1998 sogar gewonnen hat.Und natürlich von Olivia Newton-John, die vor ihrem Weltruhm mit "Grease" beim legendären Eurovision Song Contest 1974 auch antrat und hinter ABBA immerhin sogar den vierten Platz mit "Long Live Love" belegte.Unsere Sommer-Sonderedition geht weiter. In this episode, we are going to talk about a very important subject, which is very close to my heart. In this episode, we will be talking with and about transgender people. Transgender people have a gender identity or gender expression that differs from the sex that they were assigned at birth. Being transgender is not necessarily have anything to do with sexual orientation, because transgender people may identify as heterosexual (straight), homosexual (gay or lesbian), bisexual, asexual, or actually can decide not to label their sexual orientation at all. Now, usually, if we hear any news, or find any content about transgender people, we might be confronted with some bad news (you know). Cases of violence against trans people, unemployment for instance. Unfortunately, in some places, the whole process of coming out as a transgender can be really difficult. Among the different identities and groups of the L-G-B-T people, transgender people (either male, female or non-binary) are facing a lot of discrimination. Not only in the hetero-normative sphere, meaning in the "straight" society, but also within the LGBT community itself. As an Israeli, I will never forget the day when in 1998, while I was in primary school, Dana International, a transgender female singer from Israel, has won the Eurovision song contest. She brought so much pride, to so many people - with a really good song - DIVA. I loved this song! And you probably all know, some transgender figure, that can make you feel pride. Now, I believe in creating empowering content. A content that can connect us all. And this is why I chose, that first episode, which we will have about transgender people on the Straight Friendly podcast, will be an empowering one. Instead of talking about discrimination in the work sphere, we have decided to have our first talk with the story of Bianca Lewis. Bianca, who is a transgender woman, has got to a very senior position in the tech industry in Israel. She is also a board member of the LGBTech organization, which has branches in many countries around the world. In 1995, young singer Liora Simon was paired up with the song "Amen" by super producer Shlomo Zach, unknowing that the composer Moshe Datz had changed his mind and wanted to sing the song himself as Duo Datz when it got accepted to the Israeli preselection Kdam. Nevertheless, she competed and won, beating among others future winner Dana International, and got to represent Israel in Dublin, reaching a respectable 8th place. However, the success wasn't only positive as it pigeon-holed her into a genre that she didn't quite feel at home in, and the singer, who was born to Libyan parents, has had to fight to be able to make the kind of oriental music she wants. The Israeli market couldn't really handle the transformation and Liora left for Argentina, were she developed her own style, which unfortunately was eclipsed by a new artist with a very similar style, Shakira. In den News unterhalten sich Marco und Alkis über die geplante U.S.-amerikanische Ausgabe des Eurovision Song Contests und über mögliche Austragungsmöglichkeiten des Song Contests  im Zeichen von Covid19. Zu Gast sind Iryna und Natallia, beide stammen aus Belarus und leben mittlerweile in Österreich.Sie erzählen von der wechselvollen Geschichte dieses für viele unbekannten Landes, das in der Vergangenheit ein Spielball zwischen Litauen, Polen und Russlands.Obwohl Belarus seit 2004 beim Eurovision Song Contest teilnimmt, hat es bis 2017 gedauert, bis die belarusische Sprache Eingang fand. Die Gruppe NaviBand trat mit "Historyja Majho Zyccia" auf, der Titel wurde für den Auftritt in "Story of My Life" umbenannt, die Sprache blieb. NaviBand sind Teil der aktuellen Protestbewegung.Seit der Unabhängigkeit des Landes 1991  gab es ab 1994 nur einen Präsidenten, Aljaksandr Lukaschenka. Mit undemokratischen Mitteln weitete er im Laufe der Jahre seine Macht aus, entmachtete das Parlament und es verschwanden Oppositionelle, von denen vermutet wird, dass sie ermordet wurden.Natallia und Iryna erzählen aber auch von der jüngeren Vergangenheit, der Corona-Krise und der Ignoranz des Präsidenten. Es wurde offensichtlich, dass die Menschen in der Krise sich selbst organisiert haben, was jetzt auch die Proteste widerspiegeln.Im Vorschaubild ist die Protest-Fahne von Belarus zu sehen, die erste Flagge des unabhängigen Landes, die durch Lukaschenko 1995 ersetzt wurde.Natürlich sprechen wir auch über den einzigen gebürtigen Belarusen, der den Eurovision Song Contest je gewonnen hat: Alexander Rybak hat mit "Fairytale" in Moskau 2009 groß abgeräumt. Er trat aber für Norwegen an, dem Land, in dem er seit seinem vierten Lebensjahr lebte.Trotz aller Geschichte und Tagespolitik haben wir auch über die Eurovisions-Beiträge des jungen Landes gesprochen. Am Nachmittag vor der Übertragung des Song Contests expoldierte in der Stadt Enschede eine Feuerwerksfabrik, viele Tote waren zu beklagen. Marlayne, die Vorjahresteilnehmerin verkündigte deswegen keine Televoting-Ergebnisse, sondern die der Jury.

Der "Eurovision Song Contest" fällt dieses Jahr Corona-bedingt aus, und doch: es gibt gleich mehrere Ersatzsendungen: Eine Art deutschen Vorentscheid in der ARD, eine ESC- Show aus Rotterdam und Stefan Raab stellt parallel bei ProSieben ebenfalls eine ESC Sendung auf die Beine. Darüber sprechen wir mit Jan Feddersen, Redakteur der taz, und einer der führenden ESC- Experten in Deutschland. Duncan Laurence gewann den Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv mit "Arcade". Bei seiner Tournee macht er auch in Wien Halt. Marco war beim Konzert im "WUK" und sprach mit ihm. Zuvor in den News erinnern Alkis und Marco aber noch an Eduardo Nascimento, der 1967 in Wien "O Vento mudou" sang und im November 2019 verstarb. Der gebürtige Angolaner vertrat damals Portugal. Florian Wieder hat wieder die Bühne entworfen. Das Bühnenkonzept findet sich hier. Das Logo für Eurovision 2020 in Rotterdam wurde präsentiert und reiht sich in die vorherigen Logos der Austragungen aus den Niederlanden ein. Eine schöne Zusammenfassung, was hinter dem Konzept steht und wie die Vorgänger aussahen, findet sich auf der Seite des Designtagebuchs. Die Präsentation_innen des Song Contests wurden ebenfalls präsentiert: Edsilia Rombley kennt der gewöhnliche Eurovision-Nerd natürlich. Sie trat zwei mal an: Mit "Hemel en aarde" trat sie 1998 in Birmingham an und belegte damals den vierten Platz. Gewonnen hatte damals Dana International. 2007 trat sie in Helsinki noch einmal an mit dem von Tjeert P. Oosterhuis komponierten "On The Top of The World" an, konnte sich aber nicht für das Finale qualifizieren. Jan Smit kennen die eingefleischten Schlagerfans eventuell. In den Niederlanden ist er Kommentator des Junior Eurovision Song Contests, er hat aber auch sehr viel deutschen Schlager aufgenommen - und er war einmal ein Kinderstar. Chantal Janzen wiederum ist die derzeit gefragteste Entertainerin in den Niederlanden. Sie ist Musical-Darstellerin, Schauspielerin im TV und im Film, und sie hat auch schon im deutschen Fernsehen einige Einsätze gehabt. Marco hat Duncan Laurence vors Mikrofon gezerrt. Es gibt ein paar technische Schwierigkeiten, weil das Equipment nicht so mitspielt, wie es sollte - wir bitten das zu entschuldigen. Duncan erzählt von seinem Werdegang. Er hat bei the Voice of Holland 2014 seine ersten Schritte getan, drei der vier Coaches haben sich für ihn umgedreht. Ausgerechnet die spätere Song Contest Teilnehmerin Trijntje Oosterhuis aber nicht. Ilse DeLange, die im gleichen Jahr mit den Common Linnets überraschend und verdient den zweiten Platz hinter Conchita gemacht hat, wurde seine Mentorin und blieb es auch im Laufe der letzten Jahre, als er wieder weg vom Scheinwerferlicht war und wieder die Schulbank drückte. In der Rock Academy in Tilburg ließ er sich als Songwriter, Sänger und Musikproduzenten ausbilden. Ilse DeLange war es auch, die ihn ermunterte, den Siegersong "Arcade" beim holländischen Rundfunksender für den Eurovision Song Contest einzureichen. Auf Tour ist er mit eigenem Material, auch wenn er von seinen zahlreichen Songs bislang nur zwei veröffentlicht hat. Neben "Arcade" erschien vor der Tour "Love Don't Hate It" Der Lieblingsbeitrag aller Zeiten von Duncan Laurence ist Benjamin Ingrosso mit "Dance You Off" Noch immer auf seiner Playlist von den Songs von ESC 2019 ist "Spirit in the Sky" von KEiiNO, allerdings mit der Band zusammen, wenn sie richtig Spaß haben wollen. Er selbst hört immer noch gerne "Chameleon" von Micaela. In der kleinen Geschichte am Schluss erzählt Marco von Huub Oosterhuis, dem ehemaligen Jesuiten-Priester, dessen zwei Kinder schon in dieser Episode des Podcasts Erwähnung fanden. Oosterhuis ist auch Komponist und seine Lieder finden vor allem in kirchlichen Zusammenhängen große Verbreitung. Seine Tochter ist Trijntje Oosterhuis, die die Niederlande beim Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in Wien vertrat. Der Sohn Tjeert ist ebenfalls Musiker und Komponist und ist mit Edsilia Rombley verheiratet.

Zu Beginn gibt es eine entgeltliche Einschaltung der NEOS. Alkis und Marco ziehen ein Fazit vom vergangenen Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv. Was fiel auf, was fehlte? Und: Was könnte uns in den Niederlanden erwarten. Duncan Laurence gewann den 64. Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv und bringt so die Trophäe in die Niederlande. Wer wem Punkte gegeben hat, besprechen Marco und Alkis an Hand der Webseite Eurovisionworld, die die Ergebnisse recht gut grafisch aufbereitet hat. Beim Opening gab es von Dana International den Song der Tel Aviv Pride zu hören, im Original von Arisa zusammen mit dem Sänger Omer Adam. Marco sprach mit Georgios Kalpakidis, einem der Komponisten vom moldawischen Beitrag "Stay", interpretiert von Anna Odobescu über das Motto: "Dare to Dream". Die Kleine Song Contest-Geschichte am Schluss handelt vom ersten Siegerlied Israel, Izhar Cohen's "A-Ba-Ni-Bi".

She also forever changed the way we Israelis see ourselves.
