Why don't directors know how basketball works? We talk a bit about My Cousin Vinny and Joe Pesci's albums, then we get into the novels of Harper Lee, but not too much, because next week we will be doing a deep dive into the film To Kill a Mockingbird!   The Catwoman Basketball Scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNlmRId2FVQ&ab_channel=KyleColeman   Alien: Resurrection Basketball Scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0GNKQQPHNU&ab_channel=sweaverfan   I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha & Indy Randhawa   My Cousin Vinny is a 1992 American comedy film directed by Jonathan Lynn, written by Dale Launer, and produced by Launer and Paul Schiff. It stars Joe Pesci, Ralph Macchio, Marisa Tomei, Mitchell Whitfield, Lane Smith, Bruce McGill, and the final film appearance of Fred Gwynne. The film was distributed by 20th Century Fox and released on March 13, 1992. Macchio and Whitfield play William Gambini and Stanley Rothenstein, two young New Yorkers who are arrested in Alabama and put on trial for a murder they did not commit. Unable to afford a lawyer, they are defended by Gambini's cousin Vinny Gambini (Pesci), newly admitted to the bar, who arrives with his fiancée, Mona Lisa Vito (Tomei). The clash between the brash Italian-American New Yorkers and the more reserved Southern townspeople provides much of the film's humor. The principal location of filming was Monticello, Georgia. My Cousin Vinny was a critical and financial success, with Pesci, Gwynne, and Tomei praised for their performances. Tomei won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Attorneys have also lauded the film for its accurate depiction of criminal procedure and trial strategy.   To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel by the American author Harper Lee. It was published in June 1960 and became instantly successful. In the United States, it is widely read in high schools and middle schools. To Kill a Mockingbird has become a classic of modern American literature; a year after its release, it won the Pulitzer Prize. The plot and characters are loosely based on Lee's observations of her family, her neighbors and an event that occurred near her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama, in 1936, when she was ten.   Go Set a Watchman is a novel by Harper Lee that was published in 2015 by HarperCollins (US) and Heinemann (UK). Written before her only other published novel, the Pulitzer Prize-winning To Kill a Mockingbird (1960), Go Set a Watchman was initially promoted as a sequel by its publishers. It is now accepted that it was a first draft of To Kill a Mockingbird, with many passages in that book being used again.

My Cousin Vinny (1992) tells the story of two college students from New York (played by Ralph Maccio and Mitchell Whitfield) who are mistakenly arrested and charged with the murder of a store clerk in Alabama. They turn to one of their cousins, Vincent (“Vinny”) LaGuardia Gambini, played by Joe Pesci, for help. Vinny is a personal injury lawyer from Brooklyn who is newly admitted to the bar and has virtually no experience. But somehow Vinny, with the assistance of his savvy fiancé Mona Lisa Vito, played by Marisa Tomei in an Oscar-winning role, turns in a brilliant courtroom performance and gets the case dismissed. The script is by Dale Launer and direction by Jonathan Lynn.  Lane Smith plays the prosecutor and Fred Gwynne plays the judge whom Vinny spars with throughout the film. Our guest to discuss this classic American comedy about the law and lawyers is the Honorable Jed S. Rakoff, U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of New York, one of the country's most prominent and influential jurists.Timestamps:0:00     Introduction    5:39     A fantastic—and funny—law movie  7:45     Vinny crossing the witness on the southern delicacy of grits11:12   The problem of wrongful eyewitness identification14:17   Vinny crossing the witness on her need for better glasses20:07   Judge Rakoff reflects on one his favorite cross-examinations21:47   Mona Lisa Vito's expert testimony25:16   Unpacking the Daubert standard29:09   One questionable ruling in the movie 32:33   The local community in jury trials35:47  A comedy about wrongful convictions40:00   A great trial movie but trials are vanishing43:11   No substitute for trial experience Further Reading:Anderson, Judge Joseph F. This week we are discussing stupid Alabama Laws, Youts, Nun Soup and Herman Munster's Purple face paint! It's stud wigs abound in My Cousin Vinny! --- My Cousin Vinny is a 1992 American comedy film directed by Jonathan Lynn, from a screenplay by Dale Launer. The film stars Joe Pesci, Ralph Macchio, Marisa Tomei, Mitchell Whitfield, Lane Smith, Bruce McGill, and Fred Gwynne in his final film appearance. It was distributed by 20th Century Fox and released on March 13, 1992 The film deals with two young New Yorkers traveling through rural Alabama who are arrested and put on trial for a murder they did not commit, and the comical attempts of a cousin, Vinny Gambini, a lawyer who had only recently passed the bar exam after five unsuccessful attempts, to defend them. Much of the humor comes from the fish-out-of-water interaction between the brash Italian-American New Yorkers (Vinny and his fiancée, Mona Lisa Vito) and the more reserved Southern townspeople. Principal location of filming was Monticello, Georgia My Cousin Vinny was a critical and financial success, with Pesci, Gwynne, and Tomei all praised for their performances. Tomei won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Attorneys have also lauded the film for its accurate depiction of court procedure and trial strategy.

THey're obviously young guys on a road trip, and they enter Alabama. They're observing some very southern sites of dirt for sale, roadside produce stands, and free manure. They stop in a gas station for cheap supplies. The boys leave and Bill realizes he accidentally stole some tuna, just then a police car pulls them over, and Stan is worried about being executed. The officer pulling them over pulls a shot gun and orders them out of the car. Cut to them being in a line up, still convinced its still about tuna. Back at the gas station the boys stopped at, there is a body on the ground and Sheriff Farley confirms someone killed Jimmy Willys. Back at the station, Sheriff Farley talks to Bill about the murder, but Bill thinks they're still talking about the tuna. Interrogating Stan, he explains why he didn't stop him. In the sheriffs office, Bill explains what happened with the tuna. When the Sheriff asks when did he shoot the clerk, and Bill finally realizes what is actually happening. They get to make their phone calls, and Bill calls his mom. He explains what he thinks is happening, how corrupt everyone is and Stan adds the KKK members and they sleep with their sisters... To no ones amusement. Bill tells Stan they have a lawyer in the family, his cousin Vinny. Cue the red car coming in town. Everyone watching and gossiping about it. They get out and as they're looking at the car, a man offers some info about mud in his tires. The boys are being taken to jail, with all the heckling you'd expect. Locked in, they don't seem to appreciate their accommodations. Stan is freaked out about becoming Bubbas sex slave... Unlike Tucker, who looked forward to it. Vinny arrives, and begins talking to Stan and it's another double misunderstanding... Vinny trying to understand what happened, Stan thinks he's there for the rape. Vinny gets pissed with Stan, and wakes up Bill, who hugs him, and Stan realizes what happened. They're in an interview room, and Stan and Bill realize Vinny has no experience and has only been practicing law for 6 weeks, after studying for the bar for 6 years, and taking it 6 times. S:-They show a produce stand in the opening shots, and I definitely recognized one of them. We stop there when we head to the beach. It was the one with the peaches painted on the side of it.-The old slush puppy machine takes me back.-We should have a bell or an award when someone says the name of the movie IN the movie.-Y'all ever get stuck in the mud?-Beechum county is NOT one of Alabamas 67 counties. In the courthouse, Vinny is in the judges office, the judge, who notes his informal appearance, proceeds to ask him a few questions about his history. He claims to have defended the first guy arrested for the Son of Sam killings. He proceeds to tell him how his court room is treated, and that he not time for improper procedure. He gives Vinny a book about Alabama law procedure, and we cut to Vinny and Mona pulling into the roadside motel. As Mona Lisa gets out of the shower, Vinny is studying his law book, she offers to help, but he declines. They're then abruptly awaken by a steam whistle for the saw mill. They go to the diner and get "breakfast"... He questions the grits, as many non-southerners do. They arrive in court and we meet Jim Trotter III, the prosecutor, he's with the Sheriff. They start getting ready and share a knowing smile. The judge enters and asks Vinny how his clients plead. As he begins to talk, he is cut off with the Judge telling him how to address the court, questions his clothing choices. He tells him to look "lawyer-ly". He begins to explain the confusion from the shoplifting and murder charge; the judge continues to chide Vinny because he wont plead. His sarcastic response catches him a contempt of court charge, the judge sets bail for the boys, and instructs the balif to take Vinny in custody also. On the bus back to jail, the boys look distraught. Mona Lisa bails him out and they discuss the gravity of the case. They sit at a roadside bbq stand, and they continue to discuss the case, and give an analogy of learning on job about cars and rebuilding a carburetor. Mona says she was stiffed of some money after trying to hustle someone; Vinny takes exception to this and they arrive at the pool hall. Record scratch when they enter, she points out JT as the guy who didn't pay. They debate and go through options A, B, which Vinny chooses B, to kick his ass and get the money. But JT doesn't have the money, so they leave. Stan is freaking out about the arraignment and wants to get rid of Vinny. At the motel, Vinny is studying, and they argue about the dripping faucet. There is too much back and forth, but it ends up dead on balls accurate, as they argue and flirt... They kiss, and cut to the whistle waking Vinny up. Back in court, an elderly woman tells what she heard and saw as far as the shooting went, identified the boys. Next, a man tells the same story, seeing the boys and their car. Another man agrees. The sheriff reads the misunderstood confession from Bill, repeating, "I shot the clerk." Judge finds they can proceed to trial, and asks Vinny why he's not dressed appropriately, which he replies, "you were serious about that"... cut to him riding on the prison bus again. Stan is mad about the arraignment, and Lisa bails him out again. They argue about her not backing him up. S:-Marisa Tomei was 28 when she filmed this; Joe Pesci was 49!-Do y'all eat grits?-Best roadside bbq you've ever had? They're in a new hotel, and Vinny admits to being scared. Lisa listens and understands. They're soon awoken by screaming pigs, much to his disbelief. Stan convinces Bill to meet with the public defender. Bill meets with Vinny, to tell him he's going with a public defender as well. Vinny tells Bill how he'll win the case using a building analogy. Bill and Stan argue about using Vinny or the public defender. Bill explains why Vinny will do well, when the lights flicker as an inmate is electrocuted in ol' sparky. JT shows up telling Vinny he's got the $200, and he calls him on it being a bunch of $1s with a $20 on the outside. He goes inside and goes to bed. As he sleeps, a train comes and rattles everything, waking them up. Lisa laughs. Vinny is in Jims office, they talk about their past, why Vinny because a lawyer. Jim invites him hunting, which he agrees to. Lisa is not thrilled with it. In the car, Vinny asks for Jims files, which he gives him. Back at the hotel, he's very happy with himself getting the files. Lisa is reading the procedure book and tells him Jim had to give him the files in disclosure, which he obviously didn't know. Vinny questions the witnesses, Jim questions potential jurors. In the judges office, he questions why there is no record of him practicing law in new York, Vinny explains that he uses a stage name, Jerry Gallow, a prominent lawyer back in New York. Lisa then informs him that Jerry Gallow is dead. At Jims hunting cabin, Lisa goes off about not being able to help him, not getting married, her biological clock... Vinny shoots back about his stress too. Cut to them sleeping in the cabin when something outside starts screaming, leading Vinny to come out shooting. They are then shown sleeping in the car, and a thunder storm rolls through. In the morning, as he tries to leave, hes stuck in the mud. Getting out, he slips and falls, much like Chris when he doesn't use that walker the Dr told him to... Getting into town, JT says he's got the $200, and Vinny tackles him, taking the money. In court, they're all waiting when he enters wearing a tuxedo, which everyone laughs at. He explains why he's wearing the silly suit and they verbally spar. The trial begins. S:-Why does Vinny have just a deck of cards with him? And aren't you supposed to empty your pockets when you go into a jail.-Are the defendants usually in the court when they are questioning jurors? Jim has his opening statement. Vinny, asleep, gives his brief opening statement that everything Jim just said is bullshit. It's stricken from the record. The public defender gets up to give his opening statement, and can't speak, even worse than me reading this script. The first witness gives his testimony about seeing the boys. The public defender asks him some questions about his eyesight, which he aces. When Vinny is questioning him, he questions him about the two Utes... which the judge questions what a ute is... Moving on, Vinny seizes on the time it takes to cook grits and his time frame. Vinny goes to jail and finally gets a good nights sleep. The second witness, Vinny shows him pictures of his view from his house and that he couldn't have seen the boys accurately. Mrs. Riley on the stand, Vinny hounds on her glasses. He demonstrates she can't see at even 50 feet. Jim calls Vinny saying he got new evidence and he should be scared. The next day, he has a federal forensic analyst in to testify. Vinny objected, which the judge overruled. He testifies the wheels and tire tracks are the same. The judge calls for a break, and tells him Jerry Gallo is dead, and the Vinny is Jerry Callo. At lunch, Lisa wants to help still, and he belittles her and the photos she took. She leaves angry, as she should. As he sits back down, he says he knows hes missing something, and the camera pans down to a photo Lisa took... Giving us viewers a clue. Vinny questions the forensic analyst, and sits down. As the judge is talking, he notices something in the photos, he asks for the sheriff to help him with something, and he tries to get Lisa in court, which she doesn't want to do. Vinny calls Lisa to the stand as an expert witness. Jim objects to Lisa and her qualifications and wants to question her. He does so, specifically asking the correct ignition timing for a 1955 bel air chevy, 327 cu in engine and a 4 barrel carburetor. She explains: SOUND BITE. Vinny submits a photo she took of the tire tracks, and he asks if the defenses case that 2 sets of guys in 2 metalic mint green 1964 buick skylark convertibles, holds water. She notices something in the photo and says the defense is wrong. She testifies the tire marks couldn't have been made by the skylark, but by a 1963 pontiac tempest. She explains: SOUND BITE. Jim questions his forensic expert, and the judge looses his patience with him, wanting to move forward. Vinny recalls the federal analyst. He confirms everything Lisa said is correct and that the buick the boys were driving couldn't have made those tracks. The sheriff comes back in teh court and nods to Vinny, who calls him to the stand. The sheriff searched for the 63 pontiac tempest, and found 2 boys were arrested in Georgia in the same car, same tires, and a 357 magnum revolver in the car. The defense rests. Jim then dismisses all charges against the boys. Elation throughout, everyone hugs, Vinny and Lisa kiss. and the judge tries to keep order. As Vinny is trying to leave quickly, everyone wants to thank and congratulate him. The judge catches him after-all, and says hes honored to shake his hand. Vinny, confused, asked Lisa what happened and she admitted calling his Judge-friend to send a fax to the judge and how good Jerry Callow is. He's upset, because he wanted to win all by himself. As they drive off, and argue about getting married or not and the credits roll. Top Five Trivia of the movie:   TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 T23 Sandlot4 Back to the Future5 Mail order brides Chris:1. sandlots2. B2BQuotes Connects Your Business with Qualified Professionals Quick

It is more important than ever to be hiring qualified companies or people to help grow your business. B2BQuotes is a Montreal-based company that connects you to highly qualified professionals in all aspects of a business. This week we speak with co-founder Mathieu Plante all about the platform.Transcript:Marc Aflalo:On the line with us is the co founder of a very cool company based in Montreal, called B2BQuotes, Mathieu Plante. Welcome to YourTechReport. Thank you so much for being on the line with us because during this pandemic it's fun to speak to people, quite honestly.Mathieu Plante:Well, thank you so much for having me. I'm excited.Marc Aflalo:Tell us about B2BQuotes, because this is a company that was brought to my attention by one of the PR agencies that we work with, and of course, I went on the website, I did my research, but I always love hearing about the company from the people who created it. You being a co founder, there's obviously a reason that this site was created. I'm curious, what was that reason? What was that defining moment that said, "Hey, we should create something that connects people here"?Mathieu Plante:Well, me and the other co founders, we've had businesses in the past and it's always a struggle to prioritize the different challenges and projects that we will do during a year, whether it's web or marketing challenges that we have. Are we going to do it in house? Do we have the right people to do it? Are we going to be hiring a referral from our friend, but then we don't know if it's the best match for our industry, our budget and everything like that. Then we can always go on Google, but then there's thousands of results and everybody you'll be speaking to, they'll always say, "Well, we're the best fit for you," but in the end we know that it's not the case.Mathieu Plante:In order to be able to navigate all of that, we decided to create B2BQuotes, which is a web marketplace that helps businesses get in touch with the most relevant suppliers for their web and marketing needs.Marc Aflalo:How do you define that? How do you define most relevant for their needs?Mathieu Plante:Right now we have 2,500 curated suppliers on the platform, 80% of them are agencies and 20% are freelancers. And then we have this algorithm that really helps us get the most relevant ones. There's a point system that we have in place, there's a thorough qualification that we do before onboarding suppliers. Only two out of three can actually get activated in the platform because of all these filters that we have to make sure that we really have good companies. And then they're able, in their accounts, to really get those hard filters, again, about the dual localization, the language, the services, the budget per services and all of that.Mathieu Plante:Now, the most important part really is the quality of the work they've done on the platform and with actual customers, and this will really bring their global notes up. Then we send the projects to the suppliers that are relevant, but also have the best quality score to the businesses.Marc Aflalo:Obviously there's two sides to this. There's, as a supplier or a freelancer, let's start there. I'm a supplier, let's say I'm a website designer or some kind of marketing agency. When I sign up for the service, what's the experience like? What kind of questions am I going to be asked that help qualify me?Mathieu Plante:Well, some of the questions are exactly what I just said, about what kind of services you're doing and all of that. Afterwards, to subscript to the platform, it's absolutely free of charge, and then you start seeing business needs that are relevant to whatever you're doing. You don't need to accept any of those, but at some point you'll say, "Well, that's exactly what I'm doing. I already have customers in that industry. I can really be of good value to them." Then you can accept the actual project.Mathieu Plante:The business model, how it works for the business, it's always free of charge, there is no engagement so that we can help them. Now for the suppliers, they pay us a referral fee in order to have access to qualified projects. Whenever you decided, "Well, this is exactly the kind of client that I can help," you accept it. Then there's up to four suppliers that can accept a project, in order for them to have a good chance of getting the deal, but also for the business so that they're not overwhelmed and flooded with 50 people wanting their business. That's the promise that we do.Marc Aflalo:That's impressive. Is it hand curated? Are there physical people who are going through every different bid, or is it all AI or algorithmic-based?Mathieu Plante:That's a really good question. We started doing everything personalized with actual humans, and then we added the filters and all of that. Right now we're part of an incubator called Next AI in Canada, that is helping us integrate AI also, just to, I guess, empower the humans behind. We're never going to be a humanless platform, but the idea is to really get even more relevant matches and even more faster matches for the businesses.Marc Aflalo:You said there's 2,500, was that 2,500 agencies on board or 2,500 businesses using the platform?Mathieu Plante:That's suppliers. Then we help over 4,000 businesses so far with the platform. The businesses that we help are really all kinds of ranges. To give you an idea, the smaller project that will activate on the platform is around $1,000, but the biggest one that we've had is $1.5 million. We'll help-Marc Aflalo:Now, is there a limited type of work? Because I noticed there's website design, marketing, mobile app, does it go with everything to even engineering?Mathieu Plante:Well, the aim for us is to be a one stop shop for every business service needs. We needed to start somewhere, we're only in our third year now, we're having good success in Quebec and in Ontario we're expanding. Some of the core services that we have right now, we started with web and marketing just because that was my background with agencies, and now we're adding services as we go. Right now the core services are website development, application development, whether you need help implementing a CRM or an ERP, web marketing in general, or marketing in general, corporative videos, branding design. And then you have PR, copy writing, translation and stuff like that. This is our core, there's 40 services in web and marketing, but now we're adding accounting services. We want to be able to help businesses with their real estate needs, whether it's to rent or to buy a place for their business, so on and so forth.Marc Aflalo:There really is no limit in terms of the size of, "I'm a small business and I need a logo design," for example. Where in my mind that's a small project, then I shouldn't hesitate because it's not just million dollar projects. It could be, "I just need someone to help me program something."Mathieu Plante:Exactly. We'll definitely help you and by asking the right questions. Because every time we always have a human talking to the business owner or to the marketing coordinator and really digging in. What is it exactly that they're looking for? And then we're able, with also our qualification, to direct you in the right place, because we have freelancers that will do small logos, but we also have smaller agencies, midsize agencies, huge agencies, and sometimes you can get a logo done for $500, but you can always get a logo done for $30,000. It really depends on what you're looking for, where you're at, and as far as branding goals, web marketing goals, website goals, there's different places. We're here to help you navigate all of that.Marc Aflalo:My advice, I guess, for people would be, if there's any business need you have, before you go anywhere else, go to B2BQuotes to check to see if you might be matched with someone who can do the job with great experience, and is curated really. Because there's so many sites out there where you can find developers, freelancers from all over the world. Some speak English, some don't speak English. Really, there's no real moderation there. Yes, there are reviews, but those don't necessarily accurately reflect what you're going to get at the end of the day. I always say you get what you pay for. Whereas this system really is curated. It helps quantify the type of work that you're going to get done.Mathieu Plante:Exactly. Most of the time with these other sites, you will get 10, 20, 30, even hundreds of results depending, and some of those people are just using the bazooka approach to really get jobs everywhere. Whereas on our platform, the suppliers will hand pick the projects that they really think they can nail and that's when they get matched. It's a more curated approach for sure.Marc Aflalo:Now you said the agencies and the freelancers, they're the ones paying the referrals. As a business, if you're seeking out agencies or freelancers, you're not going to pay anything. What kind of referral fee is it? Is it based on the size of the project? Is it a flat fee, a monthly fee?Mathieu Plante:To give you an idea, it's around 1% to 2% that we ask for the referral to up to four providers. We make 4% to 8% of the actual project, and the value of the project we will calculate it over the course of a year. Now, what will differentiate 1% to 2%, it will depend on the kind of service. Because let's say in web marketing, usually there's a good portion that will go to either Google or Facebook, that's the ad spent, so then we'll have a lower percentage because it's not the agency or the freelancer that will take all the money. Whereas developing an application, usually it's serviceable billable hours, then we'll go to the higher bracket, which is 2%, because the money is all going to the supplier.Marc Aflalo:That makes total sense. I'm curious, obviously we're living in the midst of a pandemic now, how has COVID-19 affected your business? Has it helped? Has it done nothing? What have you seen?Mathieu Plante:Actually, we definitely needed to pivot what we were doing. Before, we were taking 10, 15 minutes per businesses that were calling us or filling out forms to really activate their projects. Now we shifted that approach to really more of a consultant approach. I mean, the service is still free, there is no engagement, but we really took the time and we're still taking the time, that that will stay with us, to really deeply understand the business, to understand what kind of projects would they have to help them prioritize those, and then help them with their project brief and everything. COVID changed that for us because we had more time and we said, "Well, let's give more value to the business."Mathieu Plante:From there, I mean, a lot of opportunities came. We added new services like training for employees and businesses, HR services, also financial and financial help for businesses and stuff like that. That all came from COVID. Another aspect of it is that because all the businesses had to go online, or they would just hit a wall, a lot of them, we had a lot of businesses coming for eCommerce websites, web marketing needs and stuff like that. Actually, we doubled the business in the last three months. We're one of the lucky businesses with the COVID situation.Marc Aflalo:Listen, that's absolutely great. Let me leave you with this question, have you guys used the service yourself?Mathieu Plante:Of course, actually, we do it on a monthly basis. Every time we need help for either a video or some content, we have one of the supplier of the platform doing our Facebook ads, another one's doing our adwares. We also hired a branding agency there. John, that introduced us, is also on the platform as a PR supplier. Of course we use it everyday.Marc Aflalo:Very, very cool. Mathieu, thank you so much for taking the time to tell us about this. If you look five years down the road, how do you see the evolution of this platform?Mathieu Plante:That's a really good question. Actually, we bootstrapped the whole business so far, we got a little bit of depth and we have an angel investor, but we really are taking part in accelerators right now and are planning on raising our first round in six months from now, in order to really go faster and be an international business. We're currently doing proof of concepts in France, also in the rest of Canada, we're studying in the U.S. For sure, it's to be a global business that can really take care of every service needs that you have as a business.Marc Aflalo:Well, I think you've definitely got the formula set straight, and I think obviously with the success that you're showing, even in the times of a pandemic, is obviously a great sign. I wanted to wish you all the best. Please do come back and tell us about expansion, tell us about everything you're doing. I think I'm going to sign up now to become a supplier.Marc Aflalo:Still to come, we're going to speaking to Samsung all about their brand new laptop lineup. Check it out. It is your check report. Normally with Mitchell Whitfield, I am Mark Aflalo, back in just a moment.
