Singer/bassist/guitarist/songwriter Janice Marie Johnson, as a founding member of A Taste of Honey, sang lead on the million-selling hits "Boogie Oogie Oogie" and a cover of Kyu Sakamoto's 1963 gold hit "Sukiyaki." The group won the 1978 Grammy for Best New Artist. The number one R&B/pop "Boogie Oogie Oogie" was used in a national TV ad campaign by fast food chain Burger King during summer 1999. The track has also been sampled by hip-hop and rap groups MC Lyte, Mac 10, and others. Johnson also sang background vocals on Lionel Richie's ten-million-selling LP Can't Slow Down. Capitol Records released as a part of their Double Shot series a two-album single CD that included the group's debut album, A Taste of Honey (includes a 12" remix of "Boogie Oogie Oogie") and Twice As Sweet (includes "Sukiyaki") in January 2000. The Los Angeles native, whose father was a musician, started playing music as a small child. Growing up, Johnson sang in L.A.-area jazz clubs, opening for Miles Davis, among others. While attending college she began playing bass. About 1971, Johnson met keyboardist Percy Kibble while auditioning for a vacation cruise gig with Princess Cruises lines, and the two started a band using the title of one of their favorite songs, "A Taste of Honey," as the band's moniker. Adding guitarist Hazel Payne and drummer Donald Johnson, they began playing Southern California bars and military bases in the U.S. and abroad. After meeting with producers Fonce Mizell (formerly of the Motown songwriting/arranging/producing collective The Corporation that had hits with the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back," "ABC," and "The Love You Save") and his brother Larry Mizell who had success with LTD ("Love Ballad"), the group was signed to Capitol Records by Larkin Arnold after meeting him after a performance at the wedding of Smokey Robinson's bass player. While playing before a staring, apathetic audience during a gig at an airbase in San Bernardino, CA, Johnson improvised these lyrics: "If you're thinking that you're too cool to boogie/we've got news for you/everyone here tonight must boogie/and you are no exception to the rule." The infamous bass solo intro on "Boogie Oogie Oogie" came about when Johnson was warming up before the recording session unaware that she was being recorded. The single "Boogie Oogie Oogie" b/w "World Spin" sold more than two million copies, and topped Billboard's charts at number one R&B/pop for three weeks in fall 1978. After the huge success of "Boogie Oogie Oogie," Johnson detested the group being labeled as a "disco group," but that would change later in a big way. The follow-up single, the slinky funky "Do It Good" b/w "I Love You" went to number 13 R&B in summer 1979. The A Taste of Honey album went platinum, going to number six pop in summer 1978. A Taste of Honey was a favorite in Japan long before signing with Capitol, having traveled there to play military bases and entering the Yamaha Song Festival. One of Johnson's favorite records was Kyu Sakamoto's "Sukiyaki." After hearing Linda Ronstadt's version of Smokey's "Oo Baby Baby," Johnson decided that the group (now Johnson and Payne) should do a remake of a classic song. Contacting her Japanese subpublisher who in turn contacted the original writers, Rokusuke EI and Hachidai Nakamura, to get permission to redo the song with English lyrics. After employing two translators, one of which came up with lyrics that were close to the bittersweet theme of the original song title, which translated into English as "I Look Up When I Walk (To Keep the Tears From Falling)," Johnson decided to add her own original lyrics to the song.

These tracks defined an era of pulsating beats, infectious melodies, and non-stop energy that dominated clubs and airwaves. Ann Lee's "2 Times" immediately grabs attention with its catchy hooks and became a global hit. Despite its slower tempo of 130 BPM, it remains an enduring favorite on Eurodance charts, showcasing the genre's ability to captivate audiences with its irresistible sound. La Bouche, a German Eurodance group, achieved remarkable success with their powerful vocalist Melanie Thornton. Their chart-topping hits "Be My Lover" and "Sweet Dreams" showcased the perfect blend of captivating vocals, infectious beats, and catchy melodies, making them an unstoppable force in the Eurodance scene. In fact, "Be My Lover" just got a David Guetta EDM makeover and is featured on our latest Catch-Up 2023 series. Pure Sugar's "Delicious" stands out as a funky house tune that sampled A Taste of Honey's disco classic "Boogie Oogie Oogie." While not strictly Eurodance, it exemplifies the genre's versatility and ability to incorporate diverse influences, creating memorable dancefloor moments. The album also features iconic novelty tracks like "Cotton Eye Joe" and "Male Stripper," which became instant favorites, igniting dancefloors with their energetic and infectious rhythms. The latter was recently the basis for the massive "Dished (Male Stripper)" by Purple Disco Machine. "Boom Boom (Let's Go Back To My Room)" by Paul Lekakis and the Techno hit "Jump" by the Movement further exemplify the genre's fun and playful nature, captivating listeners with their catchy hooks and energetic beats. The reworked versions of popular songs like "Listen To Your Heart" by DHT and "What's Up" by DJ Miko showcased Eurodance's talent for transforming well-known tunes into high-energy dance anthems, adding a fresh twist and reinvigorating the originals with their own unique flair. Real McCoy's "Another Night" served as the basis for September's massive early millennium hit "Cry For You." The sampling and riff from "Another Night" became an undeniable and influential element in shaping the future of dance music, highlighting the creative ingenuity of Eurodance artists. Closing out the set is Ace of Base's "Beautiful Life," a testament to the group's seamless transition into Eurodance after their global triumph with hits like "All That She Wants" and "The Sign." "Beautiful Life" captured the essence of Eurodance with its infectious rhythms,
Party Favorz is concluding the Ultimate Eurodance Collection with volume 4 featuring many of the break-neck speed tracks that clock in at 140 BPM or higher. Granted, it doesn't start off that way as Ann Lee's "2 Times" kicks things off at a much slower 130 BPM. Though thE song was a major worldwide hit, it wasn't on the dancefloor. In fact, it came out around the same time Wamdue Project's "King of My Castle" peaked at #1 on the club charts. Both of these songs were fine when people were filing into the club but drop them later in the evening and they were guaranteed to clear the floor. Still, "2 Times" makes most Top 50 Eurodance lists, thus its inclusion. On the other hand, Pure Sugar's "Delicious" was a funky house tune that sampled A Taste of Honey's disco classic "Boogie Oogie Oogie" making for a crowd-pleasing floor filler even if it wasn't a massive hit and not really Eurodance. From there, we get into the thick of Eurodance with novelties like "Cotton Eye Joe," "Male Stripper," (which was recently sampled in Purple Disco Machine's "Dished (Male Stripper)," "Boom Boom (Let's Go Back To My Room)," "Jump," Listen To Your Heart" (rework of the Roxette ballad), "What Hurts the Most" (rework of the chart-topping country Rascal Flatts track), "Heaven" (rework of the Bryan Adams rock ballad), and "What's Up" (remixed version of the 4 Non Blondes rock anthem) — a personal favorite no matter which version. La Bouche's "Be My Lover" and "Sweet Dreams" were a German Eurodance group that had a lot of success with American Melanie Thornton on lead vocals. She also sang the lead vocals for Le Click's "Tonight Is the Night," which lead to confusion because both groups sounded the same. Though, the follow-up single "Call Me" had vocals by Swedish singer Kayo Shekoni. Bass Hunter's "Now You're Gone" was the last big hit of the Hard Dance movement, which sprung from Eurodance in 2006 but it was the more commercial-friendly electro-house remix by Fonzerelli that pushed it to the top. The original Eurostyle mix is included here. After listening to this set multiple times — It dawned on me that the intro riff for Real McCoy's "Another Night" is the total basis for September's massive early millennium hit "Cry For You." There is no mistaking that the group completely ripped it off from "Another Night." Granted, Real McCoy only uses that riff at the beginning and in the middle of "Another Night" but it's still theirs. Considering that these two track were years apart — I think the sampling is undeniable. Finally, this set concludes with the massive "Beautiful Life" by Sweden's Ace of Base. After the worldwide success of their debut album with hits like "All That She Wants" and "The Sign" the group changed directions and Eurodance appeared to be a natural fit for them. It is also a personal favorite. CALL ME WHEN SOMETHING'S WRONG To borrow a phrase from one of the tracks above — it was recently brought to my attention that some episodes were missing. I've since discovered even more and will be spending some time today and tomorrow going through all 800+ episodes to ensure they're still in tact and/or re-adding them if not. This likely occurred when I had to restore my site from a major bug that resulted from one of my plugin updates that didn't play nice with the theme. The developer has now resolved it. Frankly, that shouldn't have happened because that's why I pay for full site backups but I digress. It's up to you folks to let me know if something is wrong. I have also been tweaking the overall theme and fixing some coding issues that have been bugging me for a while. Since everything is moving to mobile, it's imperative that I correct these minor flaws in design. You may experience some slow down or reconfiguration on the site for the next couple of days. Just know that's me working to make things better but everything should still work. You can always use the Podbean app available in the App Store or Play S...

Welcome to the History of computing podcast. Today we're going to review A Brief History of Time - no, not that brief history of time. But instead how time has evolved in computing. We love old things still being used on this podcast. Time is important; so important that it's epic! Or epoch more specifically. The epoch is a date and time from which a computer measures the time on the system. Most operating systems derive their time from the number of seconds that have passed since January 1st, 1970 when the clock struck midnight, when time began - likely the Catch-22 that the movie was made based on, later that year. This queue is taken from Unix Epoch time. Different systems use different time as their epoch. MATLAB uses January 0, 1BC - which is all you need to know about Matlab developers, really. COBOL used January 1, 1601, likely indicating that was the year Cobol was written. OK so it isn't - but I'm guessing it's when many of the philosophies of the language were first conceived. Time must seem like it started on January first 2001 to Apple's Cocoa framework, which began epoch then. My least favorite would be AmigaOS, which started Epoch time on January first 1978 - Nothing good happened in 1978. Jaws 2 and Halloween were released that year. Yuck. Well, Animal House was pretty good. But I could do without Boogie Oogie Oogie. And I could do without Andy Gib's Shadow Dancing. Disco died the next year. As did the soul of anyone that had to use an Amiga. Due to how many modern encryption protocols work, you want to keep time in sync between computers. A skew, or offset in that time, by even microseconds can impact the ability to decrypt data. This lead to the Network Time Protocol, or NTP for short. NTP NTP was designed by David L. Mills of the University of Delaware. It is a networking protocol that provides for clock synchronization between computer systems over standard data networks. NTP has been running since 1985, making it one of the oldest Internet protocols still in use today, with the most updated specs defined in RFC 958. `date +%s` NTP has had a number of updates over the years, although they have slowed as it became more popular. NTP 0 was released in 1985, the same year as the Goonies, Pale Rider, the Breakfast Club and ironically Back to the Future. Given that NTP was free, it's also ironic that Dire Straits released Money for Nothing the same year it was released. Simple Minds, Aha, and Tears for Fears ruled the airwaves that year, with Tears for Fears proving that Everyone wants to rule the world, but despite being free, NTP is the one on all computers, thus outlasting the rest and being the one that ended up ruling the world. Version 1 came in 1988, 2 in 1989, , 3 in 1992, and NTPv4 was drafted in 2010 but has not yet been published given how dependent we as an IT industry now is on NTP. To better understand how dependent we are, let's look at the three main platforms: In Windows, you can just “Double-click the system clock and then click on the Internet Time tab.” On Mac, open System Preferences > Date & Time which configures the /usr/libexec/timed launchdaemon And on Linux, open System > Admin >Time and Date. These screens allow you to enter an NTP Server. NTP is short for Network Time Protocol. NIST Internet Time Service (ITS) provides 24 names of Network Time Servers, and each vendor often operates their own, such as time.apple.com. Each machine then operates a time zone offset. You know Apple's time servers because you can read them plain as day by default if you cat /private/etc/ntp.conf - it just outputs server time.apple.com. I'd tell you how to do it in Windows but it would blow your mind. OK, I'll do it anyways: Just reg query HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32TimeParameters and then read the value of the NtpServer field in the output. OK, not mind blowing. But what is mind blowing? The Big Bang is mind blowing. Not the TV show; that's not. NTP uses 64-bit timestamps. Those consist of a 32-bit portion used for seconds and a 32-bit portion used for a fraction of a second, meaning that it rolls every 232 seconds, which is 136 years. NTPv4 will still need to get ratified by February 7th, 2036, if only to cover the first rollover. NTPv4 moving to a 128-bit date format should take us until the next Big Bang when this stuff won't matter any more. Mills was an interesting cat. He got his PhD in Computer Sciences from the University of Michigan in 1971, where he worked on ARPA projects wrote terminal software that provided connections to the IBM360 mainframe. He also worked on the Exterior Gateway Protocol. He initially invented NTP in 1981 and was a professor in computer science at the University of Delaware from 1986 to 2008. He's still an emeritus professor at the University of Delaware. In 1610 (a few years after the COBOL epoch), the English naval officer Samuel Argall named the Delaware River and Delaware Bay after then governor of Virginia, Thomas West. West happened to be the 12th Baron De La Warr. Did you know that Delaware was the first state to ratify the constitution on December 7th 1787? Delaware is the diamond state, and the second smallest state in the Union. The state insect is a lady bug. Ryan Phillippe is probably more famous than NTP, even though he killed disco with his awful acting in Studio 54. Henry Heimlich is from Delaware. Hopefully you don't need to use his infamous maneuver as often as NTP gets updated. Elisabeth Shue is also from Delaware. The Karate Kid was awesome. But that's it. No one else of note. Joe Biden, Senator from Delaware from 1973-2009 and Vice President from 2009 to 2017 - he's not from Delaware, he's from Scranton. In case you're curious, that's not in Delaware. Following the retirement of Mills from the University of Delaware, the reference implementation is currently maintained as an open source project led by Harlan Stenn, who has submitted bug fixes and portability improvements to the NTP codebase since the 1980s. He's been allowed to focus on time because of the Network Time Foundation, which can be found at https://www.nwtime.org. What's next for NTP? For one, ratifying NTS. Network Time Security (NTS), draft RFC 7384, lets users or servers authenticate to the Network Time Protocol (NTP). This involves a key exchange over TLS that protects against man in the middle attacks, using standard PKI as well as a TLS handshake that then allows time synchronization via extension fields.

Tom Gray (Ringtv.com) - "At 36 years of age, the great Muhammad Ali was on the physical descent. The warning signs were clearly visible in prior defenses of his heavyweight championship. Jimmy Young and Ken Norton could easily have been given decisions against Ali in 1976. A European-level fighter like Alfredo Evangelista could last the distance in May 1977. And power-puncher Earnie Shavers, despite falling short on points, had inflicted 10 fights worth of damage on “The Greatest” over 15 brain-shuddering rounds that September. Ali, who should have been enjoying retirement, needed a very easy fight – enter Leon Spinks. The St. Louis product was a decorated amateur star. He had captured bronze at the World Championships in 1974, silver at the Pan-Am Games in 1975 and gold, as a light heavyweight, at the Montreal Olympics in 1976. Great stats, but, alarmingly, the challenger was bringing a (6-0-1, 5 knockouts) professional record into a heavyweight championship fight. The 24-year-old Spinks would be the most inexperienced professional to vie for the title (in 21yrs, since "1957"). 57. Spinks won a split decision 58. The matchup would win Fight of the Year, Round of the Year (for rnd 15), and Upset of the Year awards. 59. Who: James Ambrose Johnson Jr., a.k.a. Rick James The Superfreak (@ 30 yrs old): singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, hitmaker, performer, producer, impresario, and pioneer in the fusion of funk groove and rock. A flamboyant, provocative, charismatic, brilliant, volatile, and outrageous bona fide superstar. 121. Why is he being featured: Debut solo album, Come Get It!, with hit singles "You and I" & "Mary Jane" 122. Short Story: Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, he was one of eight children. His father was abusive and abandoned the family when James was eight. His mother was a former dancer who worked as a housekeeper, but also was a numbers runner. Went to Catholic school and was an altar boy, he also committed petty theft crimes, and spent some time in juvenile detention centers. He also began doing drugs. While James was always musically inclined, it was not until he performed in a talent show in high school that he seriously considered a career in music. He formed a group called the Duprees. At the same time, he joined the Naval Reserve to avoid the draft. As he and his group gained popularity he began to skip out on his naval duties. James was soon drafted, but he fled to Canada. His uncle was Melvin Franklin of the Temptations. Franklin helped his nephew get a recording contract with Motown Records. This led to James striking a deal with the government and serving some time in prison for draft evasion. After his release, he began to record his first album, which included the hits "You & I," and his ode to marijuana, "Mary Jane." The album sold two million copies. 123. James's second album, Bustin' Out of L Seven(1979), followed the previous album's success, eventually selling a million copies. 124. His third album, Fire It Up (1979) and the supporting tour led to James developing a bitter rivalry with one of his opening acts, Prince. Rick accused Prince of ripping off his act. 125. His fifth album, Street Songs (1981), also proved to be a crossover success. With the Temptations on background vocals, James released "Super Freak." 126. With the success of "Super Freak," James began to produce for other artists. He formed an all-girl band named the Mary Jane Girls. He also performed duets with R&B singer Teena Marie and Smokey Robinson. He also produced comedian Eddie Murphy's "Party All The Time," which was a hit in the mid-1980s. 127. James' on-stage persona was one of wild debauchery. Dressed in sequins, tight leather, high-heeled boots, and cornrows or a jheri curl, James oozed sex on stage. Offstage, he smoked marijuana and snorted cocaine. According to the Washington Post, he told the Detroit News in 2004, "The biggest mistake I made is that I tried to become my alter ego. I wanted to be Rick James, wild man, party machine, lady slayer, and the cocaine told me I could. I forgot that I was James Johnson, a nerdy kid who grew up reading Dante's Inferno on Saturday nights." 128. James' spiral out of control came to a head when he was charged with assault in 1991. He was convicted in 1993 and served three years. He vowed to get clean and live a more sedate life. Upon his release, he married and began having serious health problems. James was found dead on August 6, 2004; he was 56. His death was ruled accidental, but nine drugs were found in his system. However, the official cause of death was a heart attack. 129. The Wiz: A musical adventure fantasy film based upon characters from “The Wizard of OZ” featuring an all-black cast, the film was loosely adapted from the 1974 Broadway musical of the same name. It follows the adventures of Dorothy, a shy, twenty-four-year-old Harlem schoolteacher who finds herself magically transported to the urban fantasy Land of Oz, which resembles a dream version of New York City. Befriended by a Scarecrow, a Tin Man and a Cowardly Lion, she travels through the city to seek an audience with the mysterious Wiz, who they say is the only one powerful enough to send her home. 132. Various reviews: "...Diana Ross, too old to play Dorothy." and ...portrayal of Dorothy was "cold, neurotic and oddly unattractive" / "...cockamamy screenplay" / “the picture finished off Diana Ross's screen career" / "The Wiz was too scary for children, and too silly for adults." / Ray Bolger, who played the Scarecrow in the 1939 The Wizard of Oz film, did not think highly of The Wiz, stating "The Wiz is overblown and will never have the universal appeal that the classic MGM musical has obtained." 133. Sean Munger - seanmunger.com "...But, despite the fact that it was a bad movie–and it clearly is–there’s a lot of very interesting stuff about The Wiz lurking under the surface. You can make an argument that its failure ended not one but two eras in cinema: the era of the glitzy big-budget musical, and that of what is known, not entirely politically correctly (these days), as the “Blacksploitation” boom. The Wiz also began a professional association between two of its participants that had an effect on popular culture of almost inestimable magnitude: the musical pairing of Michael Jackson and songwriter/producer Quincy Jones." 134. Although the station selected him over an otherwise all-white group of applicants, it still enforced a color barrier by projecting an image of the station’s logo to conceal Robinson as he read the news. He was fired the day after he presented the news without the logo obscuring his face. In 1965 he joined WTOP-TV in Washington, D.C., as a correspondent and camera operator, but he moved quickly to nearby WRC-TV, where he won awards for coverage of race riots and a documentary on life in poor urban neighborhoods. He was hired back by WTOP as its first African American news anchor in 1969 and stayed there until 1978. Robinson moved to Chicago when ABC News chose him as one of three co-anchors for ABC’s World News Tonight. The anchor arrangement ended with the death of co-anchor Frank Reynolds in 1983. Robinson left ABC News shortly thereafter and joined Chicago’s WMAQ-TV as a news anchor (1984–87). 138. Clarence Page offered a final tribute to his friend Max Robinson in Chicago: "Some journalists are remembered for the stories they covered. Robinson will be remembered for being the story. Like Jackie Robinson, who broke baseball's color bar in 1947, Max Robinson won't be applauded for his home runs, but for the fact that he ran the bases." 139. Open Comments: 140. Final Question: Biggest legacy from 1978?

Party Favorz is back with some cool summer funky house music for mingling around the pool or lounging at the beach. The 2016 Pool Party is simply a renaming of the annual Beach House Edition but still has the bright disco fun you normally expect from the series. Things kick-off with a sunny bootleg remix of the 80's Tears for Fears classic Everybody Wants to Rule the World, which should immediately put a smile on your face. If it doesn't, then there is something seriously wrong with your mindset. From there, Soul singer Leroy Burgess re-works one of his classics tunes Barely Breaking Even with Sweden's OPOLOPO delivering a satisfying 80's R&B dance remix that keeps up that fuzzy feelgood feeling. If you haven't picked up on it yet, there are a lot of classics re-worked for this set. CeCe Peniston's early 90's house smash Finally get's the treatment along with Nightcrawlers Push the Feeling On and a personal favorite from 1989, Good Life by Inner City (a song I hold near and dear to my heart). Bob Marley has been popping up everywhere lately and this time it's a dance floor remix of Could Be Loved. I'm thinking his music has either entered into the public domain or his family has opened up his catalog for sampling and outright remakes. As a Marley fan, I couldn't be happier. We delve into a bit of deeper house music for a bit with Miss Barbra Tucker finally declaring "I don't know what you came here to do." Two snaps for the queen of house because she just did it. Nora En Pure delivers a classic beach house anthem that will soothe your mind, body, and soul and New Order has teamed with Claptone for a sweet house version of People on the High Line. We get back into the classic re-works with Cyrstal Waters' Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless) another song near and dear to my heart followed by an unexpected re-work of the late 70's rock anthem Black Betty that works so well as a house-floor shaker, it makes you wonder why no one had the balls to pull this off ages ago. Finally, I close things out with a near faithful re-work of the late 70's disco classic Boogie Oogie Oogie by Taste of Honey, which may leave you wanting more. Never fear, I'm working on some new Trash Disco sets for next week. With yesterday's tragedy in France, I've decided to stay off of my soapbox since this insanity is becoming an all too common occurrence. Instead, I've decided to change my icon to show support and unity with the French people in their time of grief. Anything I have to say about the state of the human race and politics will be reserved for later in the fall once the US elections begin heating up. For now, I'm pretty certain folks know what I think about the willful ignorance and outright stupidity of the far-right's leadership and nominee for president. That's all I got for now. I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend and as always ...ENJOY! This article will shine a spotlight on the Top Dance Songs of 2007, giving due credit to the standouts that shaped this remarkable period in dance music history. Firstly, "Boogie 2nite" by Booty Luv, one of the Top Dance Songs of 2007, was an infectious beat that captured the essence of an era. The track personified the vibrant spirit of dance music, making it a perennial favorite among both casual listeners and dance enthusiasts. Cahill's "Trippin On You" was another masterstroke from 2007, showcasing an innovative sound that seamlessly blended several music genres. The track was a musical journey, taking listeners through a myriad of emotions and dance rhythms, hence securing its place among the Top Dance Songs of 2007. Meanwhile, the updated version of "Do You Want It Right Now" by Degrees of Motion added a contemporary twist to a classic sound, reaffirming the timeless appeal of dance music. Another highlight was the Bassmonkey remix of "Keep Your Body Working" by Tony Moran & Martha Wash, which was emblematic of the upbeat, infectious rhythms that made 2007 a memorable year for dance music. The song "Stand Up" by Nowak drew inspiration from A Taste of Honey's disco classic Boogie Oogie Oogie, paying tribute to the heritage of dance music while also charting new territories. Also, Mika's "Love Today" and Roisin Murphy's "Let Me Know" were notable for their distinctive soundscapes, which contributed to the diversity of the Top Dance Songs of 2007. Finally, the DJ Meme remix of "The Cure and the Cause" by Fish Go Deep provided a deeper, more introspective take on dance music, showcasing the genre's versatility. Looking back on the Top Dance Songs of 2007, it's clear that this was a year of creativity and innovation, laying a solid foundation for the evolution of dance music in the years to follow. The Top Dance Songs of 2007 not only reflected the zeitgeist of the time but also marked a significant chapter in the history of dance music. Until the next time...ENJOY!
