The CoreSite data center in Elyria-Swansea is nearly complete, and some skeptical neighbors are already starting to see their concerns manifest at the 170,000-square foot facility. Early worries about environmental and noise pollution are starting to come to fruition, with nearby residents reporting low-frequency generator noises. One local science teacher is even using a grant to study the noise around the site, according to CPR News' climate reporter Sam Brasch. So, we're revisiting a conversation from last fall when host Bree Davies sat down with Brasch to talk through everything he had learned about AI data centers. In Episode 341, Kestrel welcomes Dr. Joanne Brasch, the Assistant Director at the California Product Stewardship Council (CPSC), to the show. A network of local governments, non-government organizations, businesses, and individuals supporting policies and projects where producers share in the responsibility for managing problem products at their end of life, CPSC is California's thought leader and expert on Product Stewardship and the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) movement. "We're most proud of our textile EPR program because we achieved a lot in SB 707 that set a new level, a new generation of EPR programs that take a higher priority and implement a lot more reuse and repair throughout the program." -Joanne THEME — EXTENDED PRODUCER RESPONSIBILITY & TEXTILE WASTE DIVERSION This episode is the second in our two-part series dedicated to exploring some of the layers around Extended Producer Responsibility, or EPR, and Textile Waste Diversion.  In line with this conversation, I want to share about an upcoming event I'm collaborating on that's taking place in Los Angeles on June 10th. The Recovered Textile Exhibit is hosted by the City and County of Los Angeles, the California Product Stewardship Council, and the LA Cleantech Incubator. It's funded by CalRecycle, LA Sanitation, and others, and is in collaboration with Afflare.co and Fashion Is Outrageous.  There will be keynote speakers, discussions, and interactive activities that my cofounder Gabi and I helped develop, all with a focus on textile circularity and diverting textiles from the landfill. Additionally, the PRO (Producer Responsibility Organization), Landbell, will be present at the event. If you're interested in attending, you can RSVP here. If you're able to join, I hope to see you there! On the last show, we touched on some of the big picture ideas around EPR, and many of the questions around how we can make these circular systems practical.  On this week's episode, we're diving deep into the first-ever textile EPR bill in the U.S., SB 707: The Responsible Textile Recovery Act of 2024. While this isn't the first EPR policy to hit California or the nation, it is the first to cover TEXTILES.  I chat with someone who played an integral role in the legislative process for the bill – we dive into more on their open-collaborative approach and the importance of community-informed programs, we explore what the "most diverse board requirements" means within the context of SB 707, we learn about how feedback played a distinct role in the legislative process including some from the Or Foundation, and we discuss some of the definitions within the bill like REUSE and RECYCLE, with a focus on unpacking the definition of REPAIR, which is the first global definition that includes upcycling. You will hear words and phrases like PRO, Needs Assessment, dynamic, legislative and regulatory process, and more. We do our best to help contextualize these definitions along the way, but if you have questions, let me know. I don't want this to feel like another policy conversation that leaves you in the dark – I want it to feel like you can feel welcomed into it, as this is a monumental bill for California and the sustainability and fashion industry as a whole. One of my favorite things about this bill is that it's DYNAMIC, meaning it will change over time, and be rewritten every 5 years, based on key findings and learnings. So remember – your voice can play an important role in how this bill continues to evolve moving forward.  Also, to note – when this episode was recorded, our guest's new title had not yet been released publicly. Congrats to her, as she is now the Assistant Director – you'll actually hear her reveal it to us later on in the episode.   Quotes and links from our conversation: "If we're shopping in a different way 20 years from now, this program can adapt to that because the plan is rewritten every five years and has evidence-based decision-making provisions within the program." -Joanne on why SB 707 being a dynamic bill matters "I think the open collaborative approach has really been making sure everyone is using the same language and understands the same process so we can get the best engagement now." -Joanne on CPSC's approach to developing community-informed programs "We know repair costs more. We know that it's labor intensive, but we also know, you know, it's a greater GHG reduction and opportunity to again create new products from existing materials." -Joanne on the importance of incentivizing repair in the bill Recovered Textile Exhibit, June 10th (2026) in Los Angeles, CA California Product Stewardship Website CPSC Instagram

Mit seiner H.E.A.L. Joanne Brasch, PhD, is a textiles lecturer and Special Project Manager for the California Product Stewardship Council (CPSC), an NGO specializing in Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Dr. Brasch also holds two appointments with the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle).  In this episode, Dr. Brash outlines SB 707, a first-of-its-kind EPR textile recycling and repair program that has been introduced in California. SB 707 would require producers to implement an end-to-end system that would reduce textile waste going to landfills and promote a circular economy in the state. Dr. Brasch also shares tips for reducing textile waste at home and what not to put in your recycling bin. Plus, she shares our favorite fashion love story to date!  For show notes visit: https://www.swapsociety.co/pages/podcast

The Textile Dilemma: From Manufacturing, To Waste, To Solutions

The fashion industry contributes to roughly 10% of all global carbon emissions (releasing 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year). It is also the world's second worst offender in terms of water and plastic pollution, seeing that the majority of our clothes are made from plastic and contribute to microplastic pollution. In this show, our guest Dr. Joanne Brasch, Special Projects Manager for California Product Stewardship Council, walks us through the current state of disposal, shares what prime solutions must exist, and how their organization and others are pushing on policies and legislation that will hold manufacturers accountable, create transparent industry practices, and address social and environmental justice concerns. It is estimated that 100 billion garments are produced each year, while 92 million tons end up in landfills. That is the equivalent of one trash truck full of clothes being dumped into the landfill every second. In 7 years, it is expected that the 92 million discarded tons will increase upwards of 148 million tons according to Fashion Revolution. In the United States, wasted clothing and textiles make up almost 8% of all landfill waste. Many times, textile waste isn't recycled due a complex web of issues from mixed material types to lack of sorting and processing infrastructure. Undesirable clothing donated to thrift stores or dropped off in parking lot collection bins could very well be disguised as second hand clothing that is exported to and dumped on other countries, such as Ghana, Kenya, Chile and more. A recent documentary revealed that 300m items of junk plastic clothing from around the world are dumped in Kenya every year. So what needs to happen to turn the tide on the textile dilemma? LISTEN TO THE EXTENDED INTERVIEW: https://www.patreon.com/posts/joanne-brasch-of-79723489 Dr. Joanne Brasch holds a PhD in Textile Economics and Environmental Analysis from the University of California, Davis, where she also received a Master's degree in Textile Science and a Bachelor's degree in International Agricultural Development. She currently works as Special Project Manager at the California Product Stewardship Council (CPSC) [https://www.calpsc.org/textilestewardship] and has worked for its national spinoff, the National Stewardship Action Council (NSAC). Dr. Brasch is appointed by the state agency CalRecycle to two advisory committees for carpet and mattress recycling where she serves as the chair on both. She made Waste360's 2021 “40 under 40” awardees list. Jessica Aldridge, Co-Host and Producer of EcoJustice Radio, is an environmental educator, community organizer, and 15-year waste industry leader. She is a co-founder of SoCal 350, organizer for ReusableLA, and founded Adventures in Waste. She is a former professor of Recycling and Resource Management at Santa Monica College, and an award recipient of the international 2021 Women in Sustainability Leadership and the 2016 inaugural Waste360, 40 Under 40. How do you NOT quit?  How do you go from victim to victor?  Today's guest is a former marine, well-known ultra-endurance athlete, and Muay Thai champ, Tom Jones has been doing self-improvement for years.  In fact, he's certified in Mark Divine's Unbeatable Mind coaching program.  Fail Forward Fast!  He recently helped one of my former guests, Lily's Brasch, reach a new world record at Camelback Mountain.  Lily Brasch has never met anyone with the condition she has, it's a rare form of muscular dystrophy.  She had been encouraged to quit, sit in a wheelchair and take a free ride, and the two of them bonded over not accepting what others told them in their childhoods.  They both go against the grain together and showed true grit.  Tonight is Passover which is all about getting over doubt, uncertainty, and being in over your head, believing in yourself and G-d for strength to preserve.  When we put ego aside perspective widens.  Better Call Daddy: The Safe Space For Controversy. We are the master of our own ship!  Tom Jones ran to New York for 120 consecutive marathons and spoke at Niketown it may have involved tears!  Sacred silence and being okay in his own skin.  He's getting ready to run 76 marathons in a row from Alabama to Utah for United We Pledge.  Got your attention?  His childhood was a dumpster fire, he experienced pedophilia, the marine corp helped him find inspiration, Chuck Norris was an amazing role model, and patriot, then he became a bodyguard and toured the world, he set a world record on a stand-up paddleboard, and created an education program for children, rethinking single-use plastic.  It's all a choice!  Take action!  What's your marathon today?   Connect with Tom Jones  www.instagram.com/quitproof1   Connect with Reena https://linktr.ee/bettercalldaddy linkedin.com/in/reenafriedmanwatts www.instagram.com/reenafriedmanwatts twitter.com/reenareena   Me and my daddy love five-star reviews, show us some love and subscribe! ratethispodcast.com/bettercalldaddy  podchaser.com/bettercalldaddy
