Happy Halloween, girls and ghouls and freaks! Candace and Ariel have been churning the midnight butter, as the saying goes, and working to bring you our third annual Vintage Halloween. This year we're showing love to pre 1970's horror with artist, musician, and sound wizard Pat Spurlock (aka Phantom Stranger, the Boogeyman, our technical and emotional support, etc) about German expressionist classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), early documentary and horror Bible Häxan (1922), and lovably strange sequel to Cat People, The Curse of the Cat People (1944). A fantastic triple feature (though we don't recommend actually watching all these movies in a row, if only because of the eye strain), thoughtful, dreamlike or nightmarelike, depending on who you ask, visually striking in many varied ways, and deeply interested in the workings of the human mind. Plus there's a freaky little devil guy who's celebrating his 100 year anniversary of freaking people out. Do it for him! Parenting seems hard enough even when you don't feed on the lives of mortals, right? Candace and Ariel are launching Spooky Season Lite here in mid-September with two stories of monster women, their monster daughters, and the supernatural bonds that often look just like sharing genes: blood-drenched and atmospheric Byzantium (2012), and witchy indie-rocking coming-of-age story Hellbender (2021). Your (Not Your Final) Girls are back at it again with another oddball double feature, and this one comes with earworms. We're talking about the fun yet malignant musical folk horror of The Wicker Man (1973), along with the persistently hard to classify aspects of werewolf tale, coming of age story, and sleeper musical Good Manners (2017). The music in these movies is fantastic - take it from two self-professed musical theater haters (with a few notable exceptions), they are both worth your time even if you detest spontaneous bursting into song. Two movies we love so much we can't believe we haven't talked about them yet, one about a goatherd living a socially ostracized life in 15th century Germany, the other about an alien who hunts men for meat in 21st century Scotland. Incongruous double feature, right? Wrong. Today we're talking about Hagazussa (2017) and Under the Skin (2013), two stories that explore the experience of femininity, and the dread, isolation, and societal violence that comes with it. These are two all-time favorites for both Ariel and Candace, and it will probably not surprise any long-time listeners to hear that these are feel-bad movies. Bad things happen in these movies, and both have near-unwatchable scenes, but their moments of transcendence stem directly from their darkest themes. And hey, that's horror, baby! We're back, and talking to film critic and cosplayer Jessica Scott, who brought us two underrated and under-discussed bangers: John Hancock's ethereal and unsettling Let's Scare Jessica To Death (1971), and William Peter Blatty's chaotic long lost successor to The Exorcist, The Exorcist III (1990 - and yes, The Exorcist II exists, but for our purposes, no it doesn't). You might wonder what these movies have in common for a double feature, and we're here to tell you: actually a lot! Both were developed to diverge heavily from their source material (we're dying to read the original It Drinks Hippie Blood almost as bad as we are to see the director's cut of The Exorcist III), both use naturalistic relationships to drive the horror, both feature fantastic voice work and dream/nightmare logic, both were ignored by Roger Ebert, and of course, Zohra Lampert - who if you're not familiar with as a performer, you're about to be. What these don't have in common, in no particular order: 70's pesticide horror, Weird Little Guy Things, creepy car-handle holding, the Catholic Joker, fear of free love, “a lesbian flick,” and Fabio. There's no day like today for contemplating isolation, the futility of human connections, the depraved potential of the human soul, and how we're all just a bunch of meat bags. Happy Valentine's from Candace and Ariel; here's a double feature that really hones in on these themes: George Romero's mournfully violent Martin (1978), and one of our 2021 favorites with an appropriately emo title, My Heart Can't Beat Unless You Tell It To (2021). These movies dare to ask: What if vampires were just freaky little guys who sustained their lives on human blood? Far from the animal sex appeal of Dracula, Lestat, or even those feral rage monsters in 30 Days of Night (300 days if you want to make it Spartan), these guys are dour, impoverished, chronically ill, delusional, and might bear too close a resemblance to the human beings they're slicing open and sucking dry. Welcome to our final episode of 2021! We're leaving this year with a bang, ghouls. Candace and Ariel are joined by writer Alison Peirse for our most British double feature ever: Kate Shenton's independent dark meta horror comedy about the nightmares of filmmaking, Egomaniac (2016), and Prano Bailey-Bond's fever dream of art, unresolved trauma, and video nasties, Censor (2021). This is one of those film pairings that seem to have nothing in common until you watch them together, otherwise known as our favorite kind. If you love to see a sympathetic (if not necessarily relatable) character struggle to force the world into the shape she wants it to be, the dark recesses of the inner mind explored, corpses arranged into little tableaus, and/or descents into madness, look no further. We also talk about Tim Curry playing a terrifying demon creature in Legend (1985), so if you don't like any of the aforementioned things, at least stay for that. We're officially in The Holidays, ghouls, and it's time for some dark retellings, some real Grimm brothers shit. Candace and Ariel are talking to filmmaker Ashley George about essential Tim Burton goth feature Sleepy Hollow (1999), as well as the tragically new-to-us Snow White: a Tale of Terror (1997). Themes of this episode include: unusual gore, witchcraft, maiden/mother/crone dynamics, stuff you can't believe they were allowed to put on screen in the 90's, psychotic womanhood, and of course stepmothers who make you go “Good For Her.” Put on this double feature for the whole family if you're celebrating this week and would rather not be invited back. Not Your Final Girl is catching the zeitgeist with this one. In this episode, Candace and Ariel talk to writer and graphic designer Julie Mana-ay about early 2000’s slasher powerhouse and undying franchise, Wrong Turn (2003) - as well as its socially conscious-ish reboot, Wrong Turn (2021). For the first double feature of the year we have clinical psychologist, filmmaker, and professor Jan Haaken discussing the horrors of the body, the bonds that form family, and stuff that looks like buttholes in Sea Fever and Relic - both 2020 movies with female directors. From refugee camps, abortion clinics, war zones, and mental hospitals to drag bars, dairy farms and hip-hop clubs, Haaken’s documentaries focus on people and places on the social margins, drawing out their insights on the world around them. Her documentaries center on labor carried out in liminal spaces and on difficult jobs that are not well understood. Haaken has taught film theory at Portland State University and consulted on documentary and visual storytelling as a Fulbright scholar at Durham University (UK) and University College Cork(Ireland) and as a visiting professor at London School of Economics (UK), YorkUniversity (UK), and University of Michigan Ann Arbor. She is a member of FilmFatales—a national organization of recognized female film directors and has received numerous awards for her filmmaking, most recently the Lena Sharpe Persistence of Vision award at the 2019 Seattle International Film Festival. We’re back, ghouls! We were tempted to call this one Witches Ain’t Shit, except that really isn’t true since the witches in both our movies are powerful and mysterious and we definitely don’t want to incur their wrath. Thank you very much to our delightful guest, film producer Maya Korn, for our double feature today: Dario Argento’s Suspiria (1977) and Maya’s own production, Diabla (2019). Suspiria is a classic and a massive influence on modern horror from its fever dream visuals to its synths. Also maggots fall from the ceiling, which always soothes the soul. Following that, Diabla is as new, throbbing, and raw as a freshly severed body part. Sound intriguing? Wait til you watch it. We know it’s almost Thanksgiving, but we recorded this episode closer to Halloween, so that’s why we spend the beginning talking about costumes. Just pretend we’re talking about cosplay. Are you ready to be scared and gay? Well, you better be, cause it’s the spooky month AND our freakin one year anniversary. In this episode, we’re digging into three Gothic tales of horror from when the world was still black and white. These movies have everything: repressed queerness, subversive empathy, rabid squirrels, the looming threat of forced institutionalization, candles, and a soggy dead guy, just for starters.
