Content note: Multiple of our films today include sexual violence and this episode contains discussion of that. We're back! Just in time for The Season, Candace and Ariel are joined by regular guest, technical and emotional support, and Rob Zombie fanboy Pat Spurlock to talk about horror's favorite wife guy — specifically House of 1000 Corpses (2003), The Devil's Rejects (2005), and perhaps his most challenging, The Lords of Salem (2012). Ghouls and Wikipedia summary readers, if you haven't given Rob Zombie a proper chance, this is your sign! If this one doesn't get you, we'll be back with another Halloween episode soon, so stick around. A proud part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. It's Pride Month, and much like the United States, we're going back in time and getting scared of gay people. Come hang out while we talk about the little-known bleak cult horror of The Seventh Victim (1943), along with Hitchcock's classic tale of murder, intrigue, and out-of-control carousels, Strangers On a Train (1951). We mention it within the episode, but as an additional warning, The Seventh Victim deals heavily with suicide, so if you want to skip past that part of the double feature, you can pick back up with Strangers On a Train at the 32:45 mark. This one goes all the way to the top… or does it? Candace and Ariel are joined by filmmaker and fellow podcaster Andrew Jara to talk about (suspiciously?) underwatched mind bending conspiracy moves – creepypasta/urban legend-inspired thriller The Empty Man (2020), and the atmospheric and noir-ish Broadcast Signal Intrusion (2021) Our connection was a little spotty during this recording, so please forgive us if we accidentally a word or sentence here or there. Also, please be warned, we do address sexual assault and suicide in our discussion, though these topics aren't directly portrayed in either film. Candace and Ariel decided to divide and conquer at the theater to bring you a Very Special Mother's Day Episode: Ariel watched the latest in an iconic horror franchise EVIL DEAD RISE and Candace checked out the much-anticipated new Ari Aster flick BEAU IS AFRAID. In an unhinged move we bring you an entirely different format in which we give spoiler-free reviews to each other of these two movies and SOMEHOW still come up with why they might be a good double feature (hint: it's bad mommies and mommy issues). They're splashy, they're unpredictable, and unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably heard of them (no offense to rock-dwellers, we respect the lifestyle). Can you believe ‘tis the dang season once again? Not Your Final Girl may be low on holiday spirit this year, but we did dig a brilliantly unique, smart, funny, and heartbreaking double feature out of the attic for this episode: Jalmari Helander's darkly satirical Rare Exports: A Christmas Story (2010), and one of our all-timers, Lewis Jackson's equally whimsical and disturbing Christmas Evil (1980). Hot off a disappointing viewing of 2022's malevolent Santa movie (two thumbs down from your girls), Candace and Ariel are getting into the nitty gritty, the real questions, like “what is the witchy stick bundle thing from The Blair Witch Project called?” and “What's the name of that one singer from the 90's?” We also discuss the shadow of consumerism and greed on the holiday season, the little tragedies of growing up, how Advent calendars can be terrifying, and the logistics of farming mall Santas. Do you have a favorite Christmas horror movie? Favorite non-horror Christmas movie? Want to commiserate or fight us about Violent Night? Hit us up on the socials, and we'll see you again for our end of the year wrap-up. Merry whatever, everyone. A proud part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Happy Halloween, girls and ghouls and freaks! Candace and Ariel have been churning the midnight butter, as the saying goes, and working to bring you our third annual Vintage Halloween. This year we're showing love to pre 1970's horror with artist, musician, and sound wizard Pat Spurlock (aka Phantom Stranger, the Boogeyman, our technical and emotional support, etc) about German expressionist classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), early documentary and horror Bible Häxan (1922), and lovably strange sequel to Cat People, The Curse of the Cat People (1944). A fantastic triple feature (though we don't recommend actually watching all these movies in a row, if only because of the eye strain), thoughtful, dreamlike or nightmarelike, depending on who you ask, visually striking in many varied ways, and deeply interested in the workings of the human mind. Plus there's a freaky little devil guy who's celebrating his 100 year anniversary of freaking people out. Do it for him! Our guest, Pat Spurlock, is the pod's number one supporter and friend, but he's also got a ton of his own stuff going on. You can check out his record store here; his record label, Phantom Stranger Records, here, and here; and artwork here. A proud part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. October is finally here, and boy do we have some spooky season programming for you. Live from Not Your Final Girl HQ (not really, but we're suspending our disbelief here), Candace and Ariel are talking about two phenomenal Halloween specials – iconic and terrifying “live” broadcast Ghostwatch (1992), and acerbic “live” news special WNUF Halloween Special (2013) – with their respective filmmakers, Lesley Manning and Chris LaMartina. It was an absolute honor and so much fun to get these guests together and discuss the importance of verisimilitude, the horrors of both the supernatural and the mundane, revealing your DNA in your work, capturing the essence of live TV, and what niche subset of found footage these films occupy. If you haven't seen these movies, we highly recommend you watch them as a double feature (and check out Out There Halloween Megatape after). You can thank us later. Let us know how many times you catch a glimpse of Pipes. You can follow Lesley Manning, director of Ghostwatch, on Instagram here, and visit her website here. Hey girls, did you know? That uhm… ghouls just wanna have fun. And okay, it's not actually October yet, but Candace and Ariel are exploding from their graves early to come at you with a trick-or-treat core musical monster bash double feature: chaotic made-for-tv movie The Midnight Hour (1985) and iconic “longstanding social phenomenon” (thanks for this analysis, Ebert) The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975). What's the difference between a “two-hour made-for-TV movie… billed as a humorous horror romp” and “a campy monster bash in which revived corpses break into song and dance?” Is Sandy from Grease spending eternity in hell? Is stealing from a museum okay if the stuff technically belonged to your great grandparents? What is it about watching Rocky Horror at midnight that drove people to obsession, and united the east and west coasts? What entity possessed Tim Curry to give the performance of a generation? Come dive into the coffin full of popcorn that is this episode, and find out for yourself. Most importantly, hit us up and tell us your fun, pre trick-or-treating vibes Halloween watches! Parenting seems hard enough even when you don't feed on the lives of mortals, right? Candace and Ariel are launching Spooky Season Lite here in mid-September with two stories of monster women, their monster daughters, and the supernatural bonds that often look just like sharing genes: blood-drenched and atmospheric Byzantium (2012), and witchy indie-rocking coming-of-age story Hellbender (2021). First off, Candace would like to clarify that she does know the character from Pride and Prejudice is named Mr. Bingley, not Mr. Bingham. Also Byzantium just got added to Tubi, not Netflix. Corrections aside, this is a perfect offbeat double feature for settling into the Halloween mood without getting too explicit yet. If you're looking for too explicit, sit tight - we're saving some more overtly Spooky Season fare for next month, of course, but you know it's always the devil's holiday in our hearts. So come on in, especially if you are a real life vampire or witch, and listen to us talk about generational trauma, accidental batman, the dangers of sheltering your kids, and the coolest family rock band and filmmaking collaborative we've ever heard of. Your (Not Your Final) Girls are back at it again with another oddball double feature, and this one comes with earworms. We're talking about the fun yet malignant musical folk horror of The Wicker Man (1973), along with the persistently hard to classify aspects of werewolf tale, coming of age story, and sleeper musical Good Manners (2017). The music in these movies is fantastic - take it from two self-professed musical theater haters (with a few notable exceptions), they are both worth your time even if you detest spontaneous bursting into song. We've got multiple strains of culture shock, the agony and ecstasy of parenting, the futility of religion, sudden animated sequences, body horror, Christopher Lee delivering a soliloquy while chilling with snails, a guest appearance from Ariel's cat in the form of a thumping sound near the end, animatronics, and of course our best Nicolas Cage impressions. Hit us up on the socials and tell us which songs from these soundtracks you've been whistling all week. Also what cut of The Wicker Man you like the best. Content note: Be advised that both films we discuss in this episode depict sexual assault. Two movies we love so much we can't believe we haven't talked about them yet, one about a goatherd living a socially ostracized life in 15th century Germany, the other about an alien who hunts men for meat in 21st century Scotland. Incongruous double feature, right? Wrong. Today we're talking about Hagazussa (2017) and Under the Skin (2013), two stories that explore the experience of femininity, and the dread, isolation, and societal violence that comes with it. These are two all-time favorites for both Ariel and Candace, and it will probably not surprise any long-time listeners to hear that these are feel-bad movies. Bad things happen in these movies, and both have near-unwatchable scenes, but their moments of transcendence stem directly from their darkest themes. And hey, that's horror, baby! Come along, let's wade into the primordial bog together. Topics discussed include: unconventional found footage, hallucinogens and memory, the appeal of Scarlett Johansson, spontaneous human combustion, the chill people of Scotland, real life witchcraft, gender euphoria, religious trauma, and several reasons to get freaked out by a skull. Not Your Final Girl is returning to the vampire beat, this time with the expert perspective of our guest Annie Rose Malamet, film writer and host of the excellent podcast Girls, Guts, & Giallo. Get ready for a retrospective of lesbian bloodsuckers, revolving around transgressive Universal monster flick Dracula's Daughter (1936), and Harry Kümel's erotically charged Daughters of Darkness (1971). Topics include lesbians in the time of the Hays Code, sadomasochism, spunky secretaries and their boring het love interests, fucked up shit we watched in French class, the Carmilla/Elizabeth Bathory dynamic, over reliance on TV Tropes, the use of red outerwear in vampire stories, and of course, Gowns. We had so much fun and learned a lot making this episode! If you're looking for more lesbian vampire movies to sink your teeth into after these, we've got you there too. We're coming at you fresh out of the Chattanooga Film Fest 2022, ghouls. Corie and Sarah, hosts of Gag Me With a Chainsaw, help us wrap up another year of dark, weird, devastating and hilarious indie features and shorts. Yes, we spent entire days watching movies. Time for another break in the back room. For this spoiler-free minisode, we discuss Chloe Okuno's directorial debut Watcher (2022) starring neo scream queen Maika Monroe. Imagine: you've moved to a foreign country for your husband, you don't speak the language, you are completely isolated. But don't worry, your husband isn't abusive! He's just kind of lame and doesn't believe you when you tell him a serial killer is stalking you. You hate to see it! Ghouls, it's time for a smoke break in the back room! Join Candace and Ariel as we give our spoiler-free thoughts on David Cronenberg's latest body horror film, Crimes of the Future (2022). This film should be in a theatre near you (because if it came to Bakersfield, CA, chances are you've got access to it), so you can either catch it first or let this minisode whet your appetite for a horny, dystopian, and cerebral sci-fi movie that is rich in both metaphors and worldbuilding. One big old content note right up top: This is an episode about rape revenge! Obviously, that means we'll be talking frankly about sexual assault, as well as its context and ramifications. Some rough territory, but we had a great time talking about one of the more reviled and misunderstood subgenres of horror. We're digging into Abel Ferrara's cult exploitation classic Ms .45 (1981), along with Dusty Mancinelli and Madeleine Sims-Fewer's lush yet difficult Violation (2020). This is a rare just-Candace-and-Ariel episode, so to the reviewer who said they don't like it when we have guests: You're welcome. We are so unused to recording without guests, we totally forgot about time constraints and went for longer than average, but there was just so much to talk about with these two movies, we regret nothing. We hope that if you've been avoiding rape revenge, you give these films a try. Also, in the place of our usual first horror memories segment, we decided to simply vent about the terrifying and regressive state of the world, so please enjoy, and consider leaving us a review on iTunes. It helps us find new listeners to rant at about fucked up movies. A proud part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. We've been subsumed into the Net, ghouls. But it's okay; we've got friends in here. We're talking to our friend Amber, host of our fellow horror podcast HornBloodFire about a double feature based on keywords: isolation, Internet, surreal - Kiyoshi Kurosawa's darkly prescient vision of Internet apocalypse, Pulse (2001), and Isa Mazzei and Daniel Goldhaber's folkloric tale of camming and doppelgangers, Cam (2018). Are you Online? This episode is for you. Raise your hand if you've got ban anxiety, and/or if you've ever gotten super worried about a Twitter mutual's mental health. If you're not online, this episode still has plenty of discussion that might interest you, like Amber's fear of whales (not Wales) and stairs, the fantasy of a sexy double, and the joy of yucking other people's yum. Sounds good? We'll meet you in the red tape room. Amber T is host of HornBloodFire podcast, reviewer and writer for Ghouls Magazine, Grimoire of Horror and Beauty of Horror. We're back, and talking to film critic and cosplayer Jessica Scott, who brought us two underrated and under-discussed bangers: John Hancock's ethereal and unsettling Let's Scare Jessica To Death (1971), and William Peter Blatty's chaotic long lost successor to The Exorcist, The Exorcist III (1990 - and yes, The Exorcist II exists, but for our purposes, no it doesn't). You might wonder what these movies have in common for a double feature, and we're here to tell you: actually a lot! Both were developed to diverge heavily from their source material (we're dying to read the original It Drinks Hippie Blood almost as bad as we are to see the director's cut of The Exorcist III), both use naturalistic relationships to drive the horror, both feature fantastic voice work and dream/nightmare logic, both were ignored by Roger Ebert, and of course, Zohra Lampert - who if you're not familiar with as a performer, you're about to be. What these don't have in common, in no particular order: 70's pesticide horror, Weird Little Guy Things, creepy car-handle holding, the Catholic Joker, fear of free love, “a lesbian flick,” and Fabio. Jessica Scott is an entertainment critic and culture writer who focuses primarily on feminist issues, mental health representation, and queer issues in the horror genre. Enter the metaverse (not that one) with us, ghouls. We had Josh and Mels from Blackheart Collective on to talk about the mechanics and interpersonal dynamics of immersive horror, along with slasher cultural reset The Cabin in the Woods (2011) and haunting ode to internet horror and the ephemeral relationships it engenders, We're All Going to the World's Fair (2021). Note: We have good news and bad news. The good news is that we restructured our recording process around the background noise in this episode. We recorded it a while ago. The bad news is that there's a lot of background noise in this episode. We hope you like it anyway! We're really excited about these movies, especially We're All Going to the World's Fair, which is in theaters now. Also we had a great time with this one. Josh watched Cabin Fever by accident (another great one), and Mels schooled us on World's Fair history - it was a blast. We'll always have dumbass waterfall. Listeners, we call you all ghouls for a reason, and we're putting it to the test (again) in this episode. Get ready to consider your cosmic insignificance, the razor-thin divide between humans and livestock, and the intimate cruelties of family because we're talking to author and film critic Gretchen Felker-Martin about torture porn grandaddy The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), and its unexpected but brilliantly rancid relative The Loved Ones (2009). If it was not clear from the previous paragraph, this double feature is not for the faint of heart or weak of stomach! If that's you, then you could always listen to us talk about it, and get an excellent book recommendation for your trouble, as well as musings on the worst possible party soundtrack, rare femcel representation, the nasty little details that make you squirm more than outright gore, and the mysteries of Roger Ebert's mind. We're hitting the road in this episode - metaphorically, of course. Please don't attempt to drive through the state of Texas in real life. No good can come of it. But do listen to us; we're with Salem Horror Fest founder Kay Lynch, who brought us a double feature that tries to outrun death and chaos on the open road (spoiler: it doesn't work). We're talking about nightmarish and erotic coming-of-age horror thriller The Hitcher (1986), and satanic game of cat and mouse in a winnebago, Race with the Devil (1975). We've got a lot of smart and interesting thoughts on these movies, but we've also got Rutger Hauer getting his face spat in and apparently loving it, what it takes to make a convincing dead dog, a goblin mode cam, and us not knowing where the hell Amarillo, TX is (if you know, don't tell us. We prefer ignorance). Everything you need for an imaginary road trip! Bring snacks. It's a very special episode, ghouls. Turns out it was not enough to subject ourselves, our listeners, and cool people in the community to our bullshit, we also needed to upset our horror-averse sisters as well. So today, Candace and Ariel are talking to Sammi and Eliza, our respective younger sisters, about Richard Bates Jr's blood-soaked and deeply dysfunctional Excision (2012), and Julia Ducournau's gorgeous cannibal banger, Raw (2016). Sorry to these sisters, but this is one of our most vile double features yet. We've got bird dissection, tampon sniffing, finger munching, rash itching, aggressive hazing, the suburbs, and worst of all - the inner workings of families. Growing up is hard, not to mention strange and gross, and sometimes your parents don't even let you in on all the psychosis/cannibalistic tendencies they've passed on to you. Sometimes it's necessary to meditate on this with some never-ending hair vomit. That's just how it is. Do you have someone who hung out with you your whole life, serving both as comforter and tormentor, enacting the physical and psychological violence of childhood and puberty? Sit them down with these movies, and let's go. We know they'll forgive you for it. A proud part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Find your low-rise jeans and come with us on a journey through time, to the epicenter of our youth: the early aughts. Candace and Ariel are talking to filmmaker LaShaunte Wade about two movies in our mental horror scrapbooks: Louisiana Gothic of menacing Spanish moss The Skeleton Key (2005), and mind-freak Millennial anthem Donnie Darko (2001). We also talk scary grandmas, problematic jump scares, the mean streak in early 2000's culture, thrifting tips, Ariel's Gary Jules obsession, the sounds of Are You Afraid of the Dark, and The Cheeseburger Phone movie - you know the one. Also is Donnie Darko a Halloween romcom? Listen to find out. Trust us, we would never doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion. There's no day like today for contemplating isolation, the futility of human connections, the depraved potential of the human soul, and how we're all just a bunch of meat bags. Happy Valentine's from Candace and Ariel; here's a double feature that really hones in on these themes: George Romero's mournfully violent Martin (1978), and one of our 2021 favorites with an appropriately emo title, My Heart Can't Beat Unless You Tell It To (2021). These movies dare to ask: What if vampires were just freaky little guys who sustained their lives on human blood? Far from the animal sex appeal of Dracula, Lestat, or even those feral rage monsters in 30 Days of Night (300 days if you want to make it Spartan), these guys are dour, impoverished, chronically ill, delusional, and might bear too close a resemblance to the human beings they're slicing open and sucking dry. Be forewarned: nothing good happens in these stories - except some unhinged karaoke, which is kind of fun. In the mood for some actual sensuality? Ugh, fine, but it's still going to be upsetting. Welcome to our final episode of 2021! We're leaving this year with a bang, ghouls. Candace and Ariel are joined by writer Alison Peirse for our most British double feature ever: Kate Shenton's independent dark meta horror comedy about the nightmares of filmmaking, Egomaniac (2016), and Prano Bailey-Bond's fever dream of art, unresolved trauma, and video nasties, Censor (2021). This is one of those film pairings that seem to have nothing in common until you watch them together, otherwise known as our favorite kind. If you love to see a sympathetic (if not necessarily relatable) character struggle to force the world into the shape she wants it to be, the dark recesses of the inner mind explored, corpses arranged into little tableaus, and/or descents into madness, look no further. We also talk about Tim Curry playing a terrifying demon creature in Legend (1985), so if you don't like any of the aforementioned things, at least stay for that. Alison Peirse is a multi-award-winning horror writer and Associate Professor of Film. Her latest book is Women Make Horror: Filmmaking, Feminism, Genre. She also runs a horror film newsletter, The Losers' Club, which she thinks you might like. A proud part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. We know the 90's are back, and we're fully embracing it in this episode - you're welcome! Candace and Ariel are talking to our guest Lauren McKenzie about Friends, the WB, the Clinton scandal, and of course our Kevin Williamson double feature: era-defining meta slasher Scream (1996) and its entertaining but underwhelming follow-up, I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997). Can you The Secret-style manifest meeting your heroes? Should you? Are David Arquette and Freddie Prinze Jr. the same person? Does podcasting require jazz-hands at all times? Did Rose McGowan do Columbine? And who is Dawson? You'll have to listen to find out. Other relevant and not-so-relevant topics covered include Wes Craven ambivalence, The L Word, Anne Heche among many other tragically misunderstood 90's women, the heyday of Sarah Michelle Gellar (justice for Helen Shivers!), and the joy of horror that caters to female audiences. We're officially in The Holidays, ghouls, and it's time for some dark retellings, some real Grimm brothers shit. Candace and Ariel are talking to filmmaker Ashley George about essential Tim Burton goth feature Sleepy Hollow (1999), as well as the tragically new-to-us Snow White: a Tale of Terror (1997). Themes of this episode include: unusual gore, witchcraft, maiden/mother/crone dynamics, stuff you can't believe they were allowed to put on screen in the 90's, psychotic womanhood, and of course stepmothers who make you go “Good For Her.” Put on this double feature for the whole family if you're celebrating this week and would rather not be invited back. Or if your family's cool. Either way, sounds like a good time to us. Ashley George is a director and producer inspired by unique stories and new perspectives. Recent films directed by Ashley include female revenge horror short "Diabla", which is on the fest circuit now taking home awards such as the Golden Skull for Best Short Film at Morbido Film Festival and FilmQuest's Best Foreign Short, and queer 90s drama "Sometimes Forever". She's currently developing a slate of features set to film in 2022 including her directorial debut WAVE MOTHER and Ryan O'Leary's SEARCHING FOR A FORMER CLARITY (as producer). The time is nigh! From the black and white world, Candace and Ariel are hanging out with filmmaker Chelsea Stardust for our annual Vintage Halloween episode, where we discuss some of the most festive pre-1970 horror films. Get ready for this triple feature - spanning three decades, we've got atmospheric and suspenseful psychological classic Cat People (1942), followed by Hammer campfest The Curse of Frankenstein (1952 - and in color!), in which Peter Cushing is toxic in his little outfits. Last up, low-budget indie nightmare of our hearts, Carnival of Souls (1962). In case you're wondering, there is a common theme in these movies, but you gotta listen to find out. We can't just give you everything in the description, okay? We can give you Chelsea's amazing Halloween mix though! It's Not Your Final Girl's inaugural October episode, get ready for the jump scares - just kidding, we won't do those, but there are some spooky sound effects in the background because our guest was literally in a haunted house. Today, we're talking to haunter Jourdain Blanco about Haunt (2019) and The Houses October Built (2014), two films whose plots are deceptively similar, but deliver plenty of diverse scares. We've also got spooky season stories, a murder roadie, a day in the life of a scare actor (so much punching!), price estimates on the average extreme horror attraction, all the evil clowns you could want, and… McKamey Manor, we guess. Listening to us is way more fun than getting buried alive, that's the NYFG guarantee. P.S. Candace has now been to three (3) haunts as of press time, and they were so much fun! Hit us up if you'd be our haunt road trip buddy. Jourdain Blanco is a professional haunter and entertainer who lives in Arlington, Texas. He works year round on haunts wearing a myriad of different hats (actor, trainer, makeup artist), and has come into a love of horror films and all things horror as an adult. Welcome to the world underneath, ghouls. Don't panic, Candace and Ariel are here to guide you out of the simulation with the help of author Hailey Piper; we're talking about John Carpenter's Reagan-era classic They Live (1988), along with Dark City (1998), a mind-bending noir we couldn't believe came out right before The Matrix. In this episode: Lovecraft (barely), monster fucking (of course), houseless protagonists, horror noobery, the merits of edgy teenager politics (maybe it really is all bullshit), meta alien Roger Ebert, and the way time is a flat circle. Also, this episode is especially fun because it's secretly a quadruple feature if you read Hailey's books Queen of Teeth and The Worm and His Kings. Tons of cosmic horror to go around, folks. Tear down the walls of your perception with us. It will only hurt for a minute. Hailey Piper is the author of horror books such as The Worm and His Kings, Queen of Teeth, Unfortunate Elements of My Anatomy, and more. Once hailing from the haunted woods of New York, she now lives with her wife in Maryland. Find her at www.haileypiper.com or on Twitter via @HaileyPiperSays. Content note: One of the movies we talk about in this episode features sexual assault, both discussed and implied. If you don't want to hear us talk about that, you can stop listening at about the 52 minute mark to avoid it. We promised you ghouls an update on our backpacking/trail maintenance trip in the Los Padres National Forest back at the beginning of the summer, and here we are with two more wilderness horror movies, along with a harrowing hiking tale of our own. Today we've got backpackers atmospherically getting chased by a bear in Backcountry (2015), and backpackers atmospherically getting chased by an outback serial killer in Wolf Creek (2005). Come for the horrors of the natural world, stay for the surprise friendships, haunting mysteries, dismantling of toxic masculinity, torture porn, and of course - the Official Not Your Final Girl Rewrite. Sure Wolf Creek is a little rough, and Backcountry slanders the humble and derpy black bear, but much like backpacking, once you're done you'll think, “that was a pretty fun time.” Plus, with this double feature, you won't have to worry whether you brought enough water or sunscreen. Greetings, ghouls, and get ready for a little tension and suspense. Candace and Ariel are back from the beach, still relatively young, and are talking to comics and tv writer Pornsak Pichetshote about the horror comics that freaked us out the most, film criticism as a defense mechanism, and of course our double feature. Today we've got two variations on the home invasion genre - Green Room (2015), and Funny Games (1997 and 2007 because we accidentally watched two different versions lol oops). Stick around for discussion of so-called “elevated” horror, analysis of punchable faces, a performance “devoid of camp,” more reviews from fake Roger Ebert, and one (1) shocking confession from Ariel. One or more of these movies may get on your nerves, but hey, buy the ticket, take the ride, right? You're in good hands with us, we promise. Pornsak Pichetshote is a Thai-American writer of comics and TV. His comic book series INFIDEL has been listed on NPR's Best Horror Stories of all Time, featured on 20+ Best of the Year lists (including NPR, Barnes & Noble, Huffington Post & The Hollywood Reporter) and optioned for a feature film by Sugar23 and Tristar Pictures. Are you tired of heavy-hitting double features by now? We hope not, because this week we've got a barn burner of an episode - Candace and Ariel are joined by Mars and Story from Gorefriends Podcast to talk about horror classic Rosemary's Baby (1968), and its sister-from-another-mister Hereditary (2018). Grab a candle, pull up a chair at the seance table, (maybe put a hold on House of Psychotic Women) and join us to talk about family grief, the horror of isolation, deals with the devil, madness, and the conspiracy of patriarchy. Heavy topics, sure, but at least the ants and the cultists are having a great time. Were you in the theatre to see Hereditary for the first time? Did you find floating Toni Collette terrifying, hilarious, or other? Does Rosemary's Baby still scare the shit out of you? Find us on the socials and tell us about it. Hang out in the scary suburbs with us this episode! Pod Mortem co-host Travis Hunter asked us to pick a formative horror movie to go with his, and we ended up with a heavy hitter double feature for the books. First off we've got simplicity, style, and one of the greatest final girl/movie monster face-offs of all time in Travis' kindergarten(!) favorite, John Carpenter's Halloween (1978), followed by whimsical-yet-terrifying classic Poltergeist (1982), which Candace and Ariel can both call early nightmare fuel. Stick around for discussion of iconic soundtracks, normie stoners, ghost ASMR, dads losing their absolute shit, Candace's sick Poltergeist shirt (sorry, it's no longer available), and Ariel's favorite game: Spielberg or Hooper. We will also find out what Roger Ebert thought of these titans of the genre, since we are sure you're dying to know. What's your formative horror? Find us on the socials and let us know! Content note: This episode's movies heavily feature themes of sexual assault, and while they are mostly figurative, we do thoroughly discuss those themes. We're back, and we've got a QUADRUPLE FEATURE for you this time. It's Pride Month, ghouls, and we've been dying to talk about all the queer stuff in the Alien franchise. Broadcasting live from summer vacation, Ariel and Candace are bringing you a VERY SPECIAL EPISODE this week: a feed drop from one of our fave podcast friends, ScreenVomit! Your fearless pod hosts decided to take on woods horror for real this past weekend and went on a backpacking trip to do some trail work with the Los Padres Forest Association. We lived to tell the tale, but first we're going to sleep a shit ton and we'll save our stories for the next episode. In the meantime, we're kicking off Pride month with a send-up of straight culture in the David Fincher thriller GONE GIRL (2014) that Candace dissected on her guest episode of ScreenVomit back in October of last year. A little about ScreenVomit: An ex-comedian social worker and a queer activist break down flicks from the last decade through a rad/punk lens- and a lot of laughs! “We're joined by Candace Sluder of the Not Your Final Girl podcast talking about our formative horror films, true crime, unhinged dialogue, and toxic straight culture as we do a deep dive on 2014's GONE GIRL. Please forgive a bit of audio weirdness due to loud neighbors and computer feedback. After dark, we get into The Cell, Cam, and Sex Education. If you're anything like us, today's double feature is going to make you wanna wear a leather jacket. Candace and Ariel are joined - for the second time - by author, blogger, and Twitter-famous person Jessica Guess to talk about 2019 Satanic horror comedies Satanic Panic, and We Summon the Darkness. These movies have a ton in common: murderous cults, rock n roll, great hair, 80's aesthetics, if not necessarily actual 80's settings. We'll tackle some important issues in this one, such as compulsory heterosexuality, characterizing virgins, the difference between Baphomet and Satan himself, realistic atmosphere for a midwestern road trip, and whether it's a good idea to go on the lam with someone who just tried to freaking murder you. If you don't trust us to tell you about this stuff, trust Jessica. She got a retweet from Stephen King. Jessica Guess is a writer and English teacher who hails from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She earned her Creative Writing MFA from Minnesota State University, Mankato in 2018 and is the founder of the website Black Girl's Guide to Horror where she examines horror movies in terms of quality and intersectionality. Happy Mother’s Day, ghouls. We at Not Your Final Girl are keen to delve into some of the less palatable experiences of motherhood, such as when your kid just has extremely bad vibes. Candace and Ariel are talking about the violent and sci-fi tinged Into the Dark installation All That We Destroy (2019) and the movie that inducted Tilda Swinton into horror mom-dom: We Need to Talk About Kevin. Aside from covering goo-based life forms, unsettlingly tiny shirts, people named Ezra, nature vs nurture, and possible either communing with the dead or uploaded consciousness, we also get into our own personal childhood horror stories. Because we’ve all got em, don’t we? Hopefully not as bad as Kevin or Spencer, but still, kids are a horror on their own. Also please, please if you have some dad-centered horror for us to cover for Father’s Day, hit us up. Not enough horror dads exist, and it’s a damn shame. It's May so Bridal Season is ramping up, though how anyone is getting married these days remains a mystery to us. We're dedicating the next few episodes to the brides in horror and there's no better place to start than with the OG Bride herself, THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN! There is A LOT happening in the 75 minutes of this film, so we do our best to rein it in. We talk about the racial politics possibly at play, the Queer reading of the film, the cruelty of society, and The fabulousness of the Bride herself. She's serving lewks, hissing, screaming, and stealing all the scenes in her whopping 3 minutes of screen time! Clearly, she is a drag queen which is why we're campaigning for Alyssa Edwards to play her in the remake. RuPaul will be sashaying her way into the lab coat of Dr. Pretorius, naturally... Not Your Final Girl is catching the zeitgeist with this one. In this episode, Candace and Ariel talk to writer and graphic designer Julie Mana-ay about early 2000’s slasher powerhouse and undying franchise, Wrong Turn (2003) - as well as its socially conscious-ish reboot, Wrong Turn (2021). We learn many important lessons in the process, such as the names of the mutant cannibals (Three Finger, Saw Tooth, and One Eye), the difference between a story credit and a writing credit, and the correct pronunciation of Dushku. Remakes are always fun to talk about (even if they’re not technically…. good), so let’s get into one of the weirder original/remake pairs we’ve come across. We’ve got low rise jeans, Wicker Man (2006) style folk horror attempts, bad (but effective?) small team tactics, a woke mountain cult, explosions, and characters who have seen horror movies but still make all the worst decisions. Stick with us, listeners, we have been hiking more than once and would never put your chair into poison ivy. Julie Mana-ay (pronounced Ma-na-eye) Perez is a Kern County native and is a graphic designer and writer for The Bakerfield Californian and Bakersfield Life Magazine. What’s up, listeners, Candace and Ariel coming at you from K-NYFG with several important questions: Have we given enough consideration to these two gnarly backwoods family horror movies? Did the tragically and fantastically Reagan-era Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986) really let down the legacy of its predecessor? Is the murder in the outback in Storm Warning (2007) such a pale imitation of Wolf Creek? Is radio DJ the ideal final girl career path? Can you talk about a five-minute short film without completely spoiling it? We went there, listeners, so you don’t have to. Come through the perfectly normal, not made of bones bead curtain, and let’s talk about two misunderstood films. We’ll also discuss the finer points of corpse masks, two amazing final girl performances, Texas chainsaw shopping, the relationship between horror and parody, and why you should thank creators for shitting on you as a fan. Just don’t ask about the guts oozing out of a hole in the wall. We are solo this episode, so no guest bios, but do check out Wellness Check (2021) by Andrew Jara, a great short film about trying to date during quarantine. :( Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpQYm_soQaI&ab_channel=AndrewJara A proud part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. It’s wall-to-wall Thrills, Chills, and Spills in this episode. And about a million crazy birds. Ariel and Candace are talking to Hello Bakersfield host Carla Barrientos about a couple of good ol spook shows: Hitchcock’s classic The Birds, and EC Comics adaptation (and forerunner to the TV show that scared the shit out of Candace as a kid) Tales From the Crypt. Pull up a sarcophagus and turn on some ominous organ music, cause we’ve got prank addictions, hetero hijinks, literal poetic justice, a killer Santa (and no other mention of Christmas?), and a crypt keeper who isn’t gleeful about sentencing the damned to eternal torture. And if sometimes the characters behave as if they’ve never seen a horror movie? Give them a break, okay? It was a different time. Carla Barrientos, a Bakersfield native, is a co-host on the Hello Bakersfield podcast, a podcast that explores the dynamic people, places and culture of Bakersfield, California. She also specializes in child behavior management and special needs. She enjoys watching horror films with her husband (after her 2 year old son has gone to bed, as she's planning on getting him in on the fun once he's a little older). This episode is all about REVENGE and TRAUMA. Among other things - several other things. On this episode, Ariel and Candace are with Wi-Moto Nyoka, the founder of Dusky Projects and host of Black Women Are Scary, talking about elevator scares, haunted libraries, creepypastas, Chris Pine’s face, and of course our films for today: “Apologies,” Episode 2 of The Girl From Nowhere (2018) and The Villainess (2017). We also talk about radio drama, VPN sponsorships, and why zombies always go right for the guts. We may stray far, listeners, but we always bring it back around. You can trust us. WI-MOTO NYOKA is a writer and transmedia artist. She is the founder of Dusky Projects, creating and producing horror & sci-fi content for young adult and adult audiences. Here come the vibes, ghouls, and they’re immaculate. Ariel and Candace talk B movies, sapphic longing, deals with the devil, overcoming patriarchy (including in the script of your own movie), and what if vampires had proboscises with Emma Cogan, co-founder of Monstrous Femme Films. We’ve got a tale of forbidden love and Satanic devotion in the midst of a macabre Catholic orphanage in Alucarda (1977), and an extremely goth fever dream/music video about ephemerality, lust, and blood (of course) in The Hunger (1983). This episode is dedicated to Susan Sarandon and Willem Defoe. You know what it is. Emma Cogan is a filmmaker & costume designer from Portland, Oregon. An independent artist, history enthusiast, and co-founder of the queer, femme-led horror collective Monstrous Femme Films, Emma is passionate about utilizing horror and sci-fi narratives to create stylized films that explore the human condition and tell under-told stories- through an inclusive, feminist lens. Emma is currently working on the next MFF short, Baby Fever, as a producer, costume designer, and art director. Additionally, she is beginning her transition into writing and directing- with her debut featurette, a queer, psychological/surrealist horror entitled Penny & The Poppies, set to go into production this fall. Ariel and Candace had the pleasure of talking to Mary-Madison Baldo about interior design, abolitionist readings of holiday classics, favorite Twilight Zone episodes, and of course feminine desire & rage beyond the grave in our haunted double feature House (1977) and Ghost Story (1981). We’ve got a butt-biting severed head, a sinister squatter boy in high heels, an evil cat, full frontal male nudity, and a man transformed into a pile of bananas. Listen to find out which of these are featured in Fred Astaire’s last film. Mary-Madison Baldo is an independent filmmaker, artist, and educator with the voice of Snow White, the zany energy of Miss Frizzle, and the cinematic know-how of a Jeopardy contestant. Her short films have been showcased nationally and internationally at festivals in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Cannes; her passion for bright color and texture are expressed through her portraiture, photography, and makeup artistry; and she has taught classes virtually and in-person about literature, film history, and technology. Her latest projects include a short film about a female serial killer, a feature about witches tackling a perverted patriarchy, and a music video about isolation with a color palette worthy of a kitschy kaleidoscope. Fellas, is it gay to consume the flesh of your enemies in order to absorb their power, losing touch with your own humanity in the process? We at Not Your Final Girl agree - it’s pretty gay. Our double feature for today includes varying amounts of monchin’ and cronchin’, several wendigos, increasingly slapstick murders, a mysterious stew, a dominatrix named Doris, and as you might imagine, a wee bit of critique of American culture. Come hang with Candace and Ariel while we pick at two off kilter cannibalism movies, the bizarrely dry Eating Raoul and a fun, grisly classic of the subgenre (and formative favorite of Candace’s), Ravenous. Have you seen these movies? Have you got more tales of the most forbidden snack to recommend? Are you dying to see our gritty reboot of Eating Raoul? Do you want to argue about whether Guy Pearce sucks? We are here for you! Hop on over to Not Your Final Girl Gang on Facebook and let’s shout at each other. We're shrinking heads in 2021. For the first double feature of the year we have clinical psychologist, filmmaker, and professor Jan Haaken discussing the horrors of the body, the bonds that form family, and stuff that looks like buttholes in Sea Fever and Relic - both 2020 movies with female directors. You love to see it, folks. Check out our guest Jan Haaken at https://www.jhaaken.com/, where you can find her films, books, and projects. Jan Haaken is professor emeritus of psychology at Portland State University, a clinical psychologist and documentary filmmaker. From refugee camps, abortion clinics, war zones, and mental hospitals to drag bars, dairy farms and hip-hop clubs, Haaken’s documentaries focus on people and places on the social margins, drawing out their insights on the world around them. Her documentaries center on labor carried out in liminal spaces and on difficult jobs that are not well understood. Haaken has taught film theory at Portland State University and consulted on documentary and visual storytelling as a Fulbright scholar at Durham University (UK) and University College Cork(Ireland) and as a visiting professor at London School of Economics (UK), YorkUniversity (UK), and University of Michigan Ann Arbor. She is a member of FilmFatales—a national organization of recognized female film directors and has received numerous awards for her filmmaking, most recently the Lena Sharpe Persistence of Vision award at the 2019 Seattle International Film Festival. In addition to a series of shorts, Haaken has directed six feature-length films, including Queens of Heart (2006) Guilty Except for Insanity (2009),Mind Zone: Therapists Behind the Front Lines (2014), MilkMen: The Life and Times of Dairy Farmers (2016), Our Bodies Our Doctors (2019), and Necessity: Oil,Water and Climate Resistance—(not yet released). What a sweet episode we’ve got for you this time - sweet as in both incredibly wholesome and also as in cool rock n roll murder stuff too. This episode really does have everything, listeners. We had a whale of a time with ScreenVomit co-host Kayla talking about Serial Mom (1994), a rollicking John Waters crime spree with an amazing cast, and The Orphanage (2007), a Spanish ghost story that is poetic, shocking, and devastating in equal turns. Sounds heavy? Don’t worry, we also have body horror and house fire stories. You’re gonna love it. Otherwise, stay tuned for some severe hot takes, formative horror movies, minor discussion of Indianapolis Underground Railroad architecture, and the coolest horror moms on the block. Please check out ScreenVomit! Candace went on to talk about Gone Girl, for better or worse, on this episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/gone-girl-leave-the-himbos-alone-feat-candace-sluder/id1458687219?i=1000495369116 but you should listen to all of it. We’re back, ghouls! We were tempted to call this one Witches Ain’t Shit, except that really isn’t true since the witches in both our movies are powerful and mysterious and we definitely don’t want to incur their wrath. Thank you very much to our delightful guest, film producer Maya Korn, for our double feature today: Dario Argento’s Suspiria (1977) and Maya’s own production, Diabla (2019). Suspiria is a classic and a massive influence on modern horror from its fever dream visuals to its synths. Also maggots fall from the ceiling, which always soothes the soul. Following that, Diabla is as new, throbbing, and raw as a freshly severed body part. Sound intriguing? Wait til you watch it. We know it’s almost Thanksgiving, but we recorded this episode closer to Halloween, so that’s why we spend the beginning talking about costumes. Just pretend we’re talking about cosplay. We look forward to the day ComicCon is back in person so Candace can be seen in her full Sexy Jon Arbuckle regalia. You ever commune with the creatures of the night? We did in this episode and folks, we’re here to tell you: the thirst for human blood transcends gender binaries. But you knew that already, right? First off, we’ve got an incompetent familiar, voyeurism, social outcasts, and the most romantic bloodbath we’ve ever seen in Let the Right One In. Also someone bursts into flames. You love to see it. Then in Bit we’ve got Laurel, a queer trans girl, leaving her small town behind and falling in with a vampire girl gang in LA. But also they have an evil heart in a box, Nazi vampires hunters after them, and everyone is generally kind of terrible. Ah, the pains of growing up - or becoming immortal, or whatever. Next up: Cishet Werewolves. Just kidding. Or are we? Weigh in on this very important topic in our pit of discussion, Not Your Final Girl Gang on Facebook. We’re covering two Latin American horror movies in this episode; get on this rollercoaster ride of emotions with us. First off, La Llorona (the good one), a ghost story dealing with colonization and genocide, then we’ve got Tigers Are Not Afraid bringing up the rear with cartel violence and homeless orphans. It’s a lot! Fortunately, your hosts and their guest, screenwriter and actress Deanna Gomez, can offer you some jokes in this trying time. Other topics covered: our embarrassing high school times, interesting facts about ourselves, Twitter fights, yelling about horror criticism, and Candace’s presidential campaign’s hot-button issue - legally requiring Andy Serkis in a motion capture suit to play every child’s role in any movie. There’s more too. We were very chatty in this one. Reminder to join our Facebook group, Not Your Final Girl Gang to be chatty with us. Are you ready to be scared and gay? Well, you better be, cause it’s the spooky month AND our freakin one year anniversary. In this episode, we’re digging into three Gothic tales of horror from when the world was still black and white. These movies have everything: repressed queerness, subversive empathy, rabid squirrels, the looming threat of forced institutionalization, candles, and a soggy dead guy, just for starters. We’ve got three different studios and three different decades going on here, but some intriguingly common themes - it’s almost as if people have always tackled topics like gender and sexuality and disability. Hmm. Aside from our movies, we’ll also talk about our own Halloween traditions - how Ariel wrings every bit of festivity from the season, while Candace just kind of lets Halloween come to her - as well as what’s coming up for the future of the pod. New movies? Old movies? More Hammer films? Satanist lesbians? You know it. Thanks for one year, you beautiful ghouls! Without you, we’d just be yelling about horror movies at each other. Which would still be fun, of course, but not nearly as fun as yelling with you all. A proud part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Well, we made it, folks. It’s our first filmmaker guest ever! In this episode, we’ll go all the way back to Fran Zapata’s childhood memories of parental gorilla mask pranks, and get into two movies that she loves: Don’t Breathe (2016) and Veronica (2017). Pull up a pile of frozen peas and text us when you get to The Scene. We’ll discuss representations of blind characters in both our movies, the dividing line between thriller and horror, the impulse to write Fucked Up stuff, and whether your pets look at you like a giant chicken leg (which, ours do not, by the way. They love us and would never eat us). Also we demanded Fran make our podcast into a movie, so keep an eye out for our mind-bendy pod people (get it?) flick, coming whenever we can lure in a corporate sponsor. We’re selling out, baby! A very special episode of Not Your Final Girl, in which we must admit that sometimes cyber bullying does actually pay off. Cabins: Are they worth all the murder and mayhem? Candace, Gaby, and Ariel discuss the finer points of rich aunts, fraught female relationships, beautiful psychopathic wives, and the dangers of clout chasing in our movies, What Keeps You Alive (2018) and Always Shine (2016). Thank you to our new friend Jalapeño Jared for talking shit on Ariel’s music page and inspiring us to get into this particular sub-subgenre (?) of cabin horror - where the real danger lies within the people closest to you. Pull up a seat and join us to get into some twisty-turny mind-bendy madness, including sabotage, betrayal, rowboat fights, luminol baths, Chekov’s syringes, and boring bearded dudes. We promise it’ll be a fun and instructive time, especially if you happen to be planning on any cabin trips this fall (though, we’re only covering a fraction of cabin horrors here, so still be careful - there could still be forest demons and stuff). Ghoul Gang assemble! In this episode Ariel, Candace, and Gaby are talking to our extremely special guest Claire C. Holland, author of horror-themed poetry collection - and our show’s namesake - I Am Not Your Final Girl, about early horror memories, the creative process, monster fuckability (sorry), and of course scary movies. Featured in this episode is the “ghoulishly sadistic” (according to Simon Abrams, rogerebert.com reviewer and apparent squishy baby marshmallow) slaughter-fest of a home invasion movie You’re Next (2013). We get into the ins and outs of rich kid sibling rivalry, final girl survivalism qualifications, and why you should never, ever date your professor. Is there a sequel brewing here? Can hiring a few hitmen count as ethical capitalism? Are filmmakers more likely to take a crossbow bolt to the face than the average person? And what the hell is mumblegore? You’ll have to listen to find out. Check out Claire Holland’s book, I Am Not Your Final Girl: “a collection of feminist-horror poems about final girls... The poems confront the role of women throughout history in relation to subjects such as feminism, violence, motherhood, and sexuality. Each poem is based on a fictional character from horror cinema, and explores the many ways in which women find empowerment through violence and their own perceived monstrousness.” https://www.clairecholland.com/books A proud part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network.
