This week on Geekstorians, Dave from Geektown looks at three films that did not behave the way Hollywood expected.‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show' arrived as a box office failure before midnight audiences turned it into a ritual. ‘Blade Runner' opened to confusion, studio interference and mixed reactions before becoming one of science fiction's most debated landmarks. And ‘The Big Lebowski' drifted into cinemas as a modest Coen Brothers oddity before fans turned The Dude into something far bigger, stranger, and, somehow, semi-spiritual.This is not a story about films that were secretly massive hits all along. It is about what happens when something strange, difficult or badly timed finds the people who need it later. Through late-night screenings, VHS, cable, DVD, festivals, quotes, costumes and arguments that refuse to die, these films became more than movies. They became communities.Season Two of Geekstorians has been about things that did not go to plan. This episode asks what happens when failure is not the end of the story, but the beginning of the cult.Presented by Dave from Geektown. For more on TV, film, gaming and geek culture, head to Geektown.co.uk, and check out Geektown Radio for the latest entertainment news, reviews and UK air dates.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. 1990 was a strange, transitional year for horror… and a massively formative one for us.In this episode of the Gutted Horror Podcast, we dig into the BEST HORROR MOVIES OF 1990 — the movies that shaped our taste in horror, warped our brains at an early age, and sent us down the path of becoming lifelong genre obsessives. From studio horror classics to overlooked video store oddities, we're talking slashers, creature features, psychological horror, cult weirdness, and forgotten gems that deserve way more attention. Some of these movies became horror canon. Others disappeared into the void of VHS shelves and late-night cable… but all of them left a mark.
Returning guest Don Campbell joins us as we meet Charles Lee Ray in episode 156, tackling Tom Holland's 1988 classic Child's Play as the second entry in the "It's Voodoo Baby" triple feature. We break down all eight of Chucky's major reveals, from the voodoo soul transfer that opens the film to the battery scene confrontation between Karen Barclay and the Good Guy doll, to the fiery finale in the apartment. Along the way we explore Don Mancini's original "Blood Buddy" script, the Cabbage Patch doll craze that inspired the film, the raised soundstage set and practical puppet work that brought Chucky to life, and why Catherine Hicks' performance makes Child's Play as much a story about a struggling single mother as it is a slasher. The episode closes with our favorite reveals ranking, real monsters, and a round of "would you survive Chucky?" Next up: Wes Craven's The Serpent and the Rainbow closes out the triple feature. Mike shares what he believes to be the Top Cult Classics that defined the 2000s. These are the movies that either confused audiences, got dumped by studios, or flat-out failed at the box office… but later became beloved cult classics through DVD, cable, streaming, memes, and word-of-mouth. Mike talks to Emile Hirsch who talks about his love of the video store as a kid, landing the role of Speed Racer, working with his heroes, getting an early start as a child actor and his roles in Lords of Dogtown and Into the Wild. In the Movie Review, Mike talks about Mortal Kombat 2. Johnny Cage joins other fighters in the ultimate, no-holds-barred battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn, a powerful tyrant who threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders. Mike shares why unfortunately it wasn’t better than part 1, Karl Urban’s lackluster performance and why it feels like an off brand Avengers Infinity War. In the Trailer Park, Mike talks about The Odyssey directed by Christopher Nolan. Odysseus, king of Ithaca, embarks on a perilous journey to return home after the Trojan War. Mike shares why he is now hype for the movie after he initially thought it was going to be a snooze fest. New Episodes Every Monday! You might remember the film Heathers from the late 80s. It starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, and it's stood the test of time as a cult favourite. Some have referred to it as the original Mean Girls. Well now the stage musical is making its way to New Zealand! Heathers the Musical will feature performers from New Zealand and Australia, and it'll be on at the James Hay Theatre in Christchurch from the 15th of May, followed by the Wellington Opera House from the 28th, and finally The Civic in Auckland from the 10th of June. Broadway, TV and film director Andy Fickman is helming the production, he chats to Jesse.
This week's pick comes from Patreon supporter Graeme—clearly a man who woke up and chose absolute emotional devastation. Directed by Shane Meadows, Dead Man's Shoes (2004) is a raw, low-budget British drama that has steadily grown into a cult favourite. Shot primarily in and around Matlock, the film was made on a modest budget estimated at around £723,000. Meadows co-wrote the screenplay with Paddy Considine, who also stars in the lead role. The production leaned heavily on improvisation, giving the performances an unsettling realism that sets it apart from more polished revenge thrillers.Upon release, the film was praised for its intensity, authenticity, and grounded portrayal of working-class life in the Midlands. Toby Kebbell also received acclaim for his emotionally charged supporting performance. Though not a major box office hit, Dead Man's Shoes built its reputation through word of mouth, critical appreciation, and home media circulation—firmly cementing its place as one of the most respected British films of the 2000s.TRAILER GUY PLOT SYNOPSISHe's been away… but now he's back.In a quiet Derbyshire town, a lone figure returns with unfinished business—and a stare that makes hardened men nervous. Pop culture chaos meets hilarious commentary as we revisit one of the wildest 80s movies ever made. In this episode, Natalie and Angela dive into Just One of the Guys—a nostalgic cult classic that somehow manages to be both deeply problematic and weirdly ahead of its time. From outrageous sexism to questionable plot choices (and acting choices…), the duo breaks down what still works, what absolutely doesn't, and why we can't stop talking about it. They unpack the film's "low-key feminist" message, cringe-worthy scenes, and unforgettable characters—including one of the most chaotic younger brothers in movie history. Along the way, expect laughs, shock, and plenty of "did that REALLY just happen?" moments. If you love nostalgic media, unfiltered takes, and a little generational perspective, this episode is your perfect throwback escape.

Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island is one of the most rewatchable psychological thrillers of the 2000s, and on this episode of How I Met Your Monster, we break down exactly why. Set in 1954 at Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane, Shutter Island follows U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) as he investigates the disappearance of a patient from a remote island asylum and slowly loses his grip on what's real. It's a film built on clues hidden in plain sight, unreliable narration, and one of the most satisfying twist endings in modern horror and thriller cinema. We cover the film's five monster reveals, the symbolism of fire and water throughout the story, Scorsese's visual references to Gustav Klimt's "The Kiss," and the real history of trans-orbital lobotomies that gives the film's ending its gut-punch weight. We also dig into the film's place in the Scorsese/DiCaprio collaboration, how it compares to Inception (also released in 2010), and why Shutter Island deserves more awards recognition than it ever received. Other topics include the psychology of trauma and repressed memory, the history of mental health treatment in mid-century America, the true crime case of Andrea Yates, the literary legacy of Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone), and how Scorsese uses classic filmmaking techniques — from Hitchcock-inspired direction to old-school rear projection — to build dread. Cultists, we've been inspired by the release of The Bride! this month to put Frank Roddam's film of the same name on the Exam Table. Taking 1935's Bride Of Frankenstein as a jumping off point and bringing back several actors from Roddam's Cult Classic, Quadrophenia. The film reimagines The Monster and The Bride as star-crossed lovers to mixed results. Please join us for the Dissection. Before the MCU, before the modern wave of DC Comics movies, and long before superhero films dominated the box office… there was The Phantom (1996). In this episode of the SuperHero Homies Throwback Series, we revisit the cult comic book movie The Phantom starring Billy Zane and Treat Williams to see if this forgotten superhero film holds up today… or if it belongs deep in the jungle with the Skull Cave. Our Throwback episodes celebrate older movies (usually 25+ years old) with humor, nostalgia, and a fun pop culture discussion. This time, a fan of the show suggested we review The Phantom, and it turned out to be an absolute blast. Even though we don't think this 90s superhero movie is technically good, it ended up being one of the funniest and most entertaining watches with friends we've had in a while. In this episode we discuss: • The full plot breakdown of The Phantom (1996) • The movie's roots in the classic Phantom comic strip and comic books • Billy Zane's performance as the legendary purple-suited hero • Treat Williams' over-the-top villain energy • The action scenes, adventure tone, and jungle setting • The unintentionally hilarious dialogue • Why the cinematography and action choreography feel so dated • The strange charm that makes this movie oddly enjoyable • Our favorite ridiculous and memorable moments Even with its awkward dialogue, lackluster plot, stiff action scenes, and questionable filmmaking choices, The Phantom somehow manages to deliver a weirdly charming comic book adventure that's perfect for a group watch with friends. But before we jump into this 90s superhero time capsule… Cold Open Topics Include: • Our thoughts on the new Lanterns TV series trailer • Our favorite moments from DC Comics' Doomsday Clock storyline • The infamous Ace Ventura rhino prop being put up for sale • The recent bizarre Jim Carrey controversy circulating online If you enjoy: Superhero podcasts Comic book discussions Throwback movie reviews Pop culture debates Nerd culture analysis MCU & DC commentary Retro comic book movies “So bad it's good” movie discussions …then you'll feel right at home with the SuperHero Homies. *Originally aired August 29th, 2025 In this bonus episode of Selective Ignorance, Mandii B is joined by A-King and Jayson Rodriguez for a dynamic deep dive into the world of Black cult classics—films that continue to shape culture, conversation, and identity across generations. The episode kicks off with an introduction to the concept of Black cult classics [00:00], before unpacking what truly defines a “classic” in this space [02:52].Together, they examine the cultural impact and the power of representation in film [05:53], while also spotlighting the role of actors and directors in pushing stories forward [09:04]. The discussion explores how genres within Black cinema have evolved [11:55], touching on the controversial legacy of Blaxploitation [14:44] and Eddie Murphy’s groundbreaking influence in the 1980s [17:44]. The conversation then shifts to the 1990s, celebrated as a golden era for Black films [21:05], followed by a lively debate on quality versus cult status [23:49]. After reflecting on how these dynamics continue to shape the future of Black cinema [27:04], the trio engages in a spirited comparison of “hood films” and “love films” [40:02], before branching into discussions on other genres like comedy, biopics, and more [42:48]. Romance and dramedy emerge as critical forces in shaping narratives around Black love and identity [46:32], while Tyler Perry’s controversial reign in Black film becomes a focal point [50:13]. This naturally leads into a comparison of Spike Lee and Tyler Perry’s distinct legacies [54:40], and a spotlight on the new generation of filmmakers such as Ryan Coogler and Jordan Peele [01:01:14]. The group also unpacks the complex role of slave movies in Black cinema [01:07:22], questioning their place in shaping narratives of identity and history. Finally, they close the episode on a playful note with a game of “How Many Black Movies Have You Seen?” [01:09:47], blending nostalgia, critique, and cultural appreciation. This episode highlights the enduring impact of Black films and the ongoing journey of representation, storytelling, and ownership in Hollywood. “No Holes Barred: A Dual Manifesto Of Sexual Exploration And Power” w/ Tempest X!Sale Link Follow the host on Social MediaMandii B Instagram/X @fullcourtpumps Follow the crew on Social Media @itsaking @jaysonrodriguez Follow the show on Social MediaInstagram @selectiveignorancepodTiktok @selective.ignoranceX/Twitter @selectiveig_podSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
