Your eyes are not cameras—they are clocks. Every cell and organ in your body is orchestrated by the light you let in, making light the most powerful regulator of health. More than ever, I believe the “light diet” is a foundational lifestyle change in the fight against chronic disease. That's why today's guest is one of the most important I've had—a true pioneer in the science of light and health.Dr. Martin Moore-Ede is a world-renowned circadian biology expert with over four decades of research on how light affects sleep, fatigue, and chronic diseases. As a former Harvard Medical School professor, he helped discover the brain's master clock—the suprachiasmatic nucleus—and authored the bestselling The Clocks That Time Us. In 1983, he founded CIRCADIAN®, a global firm optimizing 24/7 workforce performance, and later launched CIRCADIAN Light and CIRCADIAN ZircLight to counter the health risks of artificial lighting. In this episode, we explore:How proper light exposure can increase lifespan by up to five years—and how being “dumb with light” is now correlated with everything from cancer and diabetes to autoimmune and psychiatric disorders. When to wake up, how much outdoor light we need daily, the massive difference in lux between indoor and outdoor light, and the critical role of the brain's internal clock. Why early sunlight matters, and how flawed studies distorted our understanding of sunlight and cataracts. The rise in breast cancer since widespread electrification—now 70x more common. How hospital window placement can influence recovery from depression and anxiety by up to 50%.Why Dr. Moore-Ede gets outside every day—rain, sun, or snow—without sunglasses or eyewear.Whether you're new to circadian science or already light-aware, this episode will shift how you think about health.Contact and Resources: Website – thelightdoctor.com Website – bluesafe24.com Website – circadianlight.orgReferenced Studies Mentioned:Gbyl K et al. Idea Maze or Insanity? with Anjan Katta, Founder of Daylight

I had never met Anjan Katta before entering his apartment a few months back. It was some combination of office, shrine, and looney bin plucked from the Charlie Conspiracy episode of Always Sunny in Philadelphia.Despite the absolute chaos surrounding us, the vibe was calm and the energy was high. Clearly this was a founder who had seen some things and had returned to share the lessons gathered through his journey. There's talk of startups navigating the idea maze but here I was, literally sitting in it. Thousands of post-it notes on walls, posters, and even kitchen cabinets. Hundreds of hand drawn diagrams expressing ideas mid-formation and processes being captured mid-design.Mid-conversation, Anjan belted out:“A real idea maze looks like insanity and feels like shit while you're in it!”Sitting in a physical version of what the idea maze for bringing Daylight Computer to life looked like was a powerful moment in understanding Anjan's experience as an often frustrated and overlooked founder. Over seven years ago, Anjan began a journey to reimagine the relationship we have with our screens. In doing so, his aim was to slow or stop the emerging health crises of time on screen and its impact on users emotional and physical health. Spurned by investors, he turned to over 100 angels to fund the company's progress to date. With a device now in production and shipping (when they're not sold out), there are lessons for every founder in this one. Particularly, chasing an idea and mission even when it's out for favor with VCs — maybe even especially those ideas. I hope you enjoy listening to this one as much as we enjoyed recording. If there's anything in hear that resonates with you, leave us a comment or share a clip. As always, thank you for your ongoing support of all we're doing at INDIE.— Bryce

On February 20, 1974, while recovering from the effects of sodium pentothal administered for the extraction of an impacted wisdom tooth, Dick received a home delivery of Darvon from a young woman. When he opened the door, he was struck by the dark-haired girl's beauty, and was especially drawn to her golden necklace. He asked her about its curious fish-shaped design. As she was leaving, she replied: "This is a sign used by the early Christians." Dick called the symbol the "vesicle pisces". This name seems to have been based on his conflation of two related symbols, the Christian ichthys symbol (two intersecting arcs delineating a fish in profile), which the woman was wearing, and the vesica piscis.[39] Dick recounted that as the sun glinted off the gold pendant, the reflection caused the generation of a "pink beam" of light that mesmerized him. He came to believe the beam imparted wisdom and clairvoyance, and also believed it to be intelligent. On one occasion, he was startled by a separate recurrence of the pink beam, which imparted the information that his infant son was ill. The Dicks rushed the child to the hospital, where the illness was confirmed by professional diagnosis.[40][verification needed] After the woman's departure, Dick began experiencing strange hallucinations. Although initially attributing them to side effects from medication, he considered this explanation implausible after weeks of continued hallucination. He told Charles Platt: "I experienced an invasion of my mind by a transcendentally rational mind, as if I had been insane all my life and suddenly I had become sane."[41] Throughout February and March 1974, Dick experienced a series of hallucinations which he referred to as "2-3-74",[26][42] shorthand for February–March 1974. Aside from the "pink beam", he described the initial hallucinations as geometric patterns, and, occasionally, brief pictures of Jesus and ancient Rome. As the hallucinations increased in duration and frequency, Dick claimed he began to live two parallel lives—one as himself, "Philip K. Dick", and one as "Thomas",[43] a Christian persecuted by Romans in the first century AD. He referred to the "transcendentally rational mind" as "Zebra", "God" and "VALIS" (an acronym for Vast Active Living Intelligence System). He wrote about the experiences, first in the semi-autobiographical novel Radio Free Albemuth, then in VALIS, The Divine Invasion, The Transmigration of Timothy Archer and the unfinished The Owl in Daylight (the VALIS trilogy).[citation needed] In 1974, Dick wrote a letter to the FBI, accusing various people, including University of California, San Diego professor Fredric Jameson, of being foreign agents of Warsaw Pact powers.[44] He also wrote that Stanisław Lem was probably a false name used by a composite committee operating on orders of the Communist party to gain control over public opinion.[45] At one point, Dick felt he had been taken over by the spirit of the prophet Elijah. He believed that an episode in his novel Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said was a detailed retelling of a biblical story from the Book of Acts, which he had never read.[46] He documented and discussed his experiences and faith in a private journal he called his "exegesis", portions of which were later published as The Exegesis of Philip K. Dick. The last novel he wrote was The Transmigration of Timothy Archer; it was published shortly after his death in 1982.[47]https://amzn.to/3ITbWCTBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Story at-a-glance Your immune system's frontline defenders, called neutrophils, are most powerful in the early morning when activated by daylight exposure Light works like an internal alarm, switching your immune response on at the right time and boosting your body's ability to fight infection When you stay up late, miss morning sunlight or get too much artificial light at night, your immune rhythm falls out of sync, leaving you more vulnerable Research shows that your immune system is not only reactive but timed, meaning when you're exposed to pathogens matters as much as how your body fights them Simple changes, like getting outside in the morning and limiting screen use before bed, reprogram your immune system to respond faster and more effectively

In this episode, we talk with Peter Choi, Design Principal at HOK, who challenges us to rethink the very systems that power our built environment. As AI, edge computing, and digital speed reshape how we live and work, Choi makes a compelling case for treating data infrastructure like we treat daylight—essential, embedded, and experience-defining.We explore how this invisible layer could unlock new design opportunities, from reinventing Class B buildings to enabling more responsive, human-centered workplaces. If buildings are stories we tell about our values, then this conversation asks: what does it mean to design for a world where connection is everything? It's a provocative look at the future of placemaking in the digital age.

Depending on what time it is, your body responds differently to an injury or infection. During the day, you're likely to heal faster and fight infection better than at night. And historically, scientists weren't entirely sure why. That picture is starting to clear up thanks to a new study published last week in the journal Science Immunology. The research finds a missing piece of the puzzle in neutrophils, powerful immune cells that — despite living less than 24 hours — know the difference between day and night.Got a question about how the body works?
