Kate Ames is the Owner and Operator of Baller Foods. Chef Kate grew up foraging, fishing, and camping in Terrace, British Columbia. From a young age, she was drawn more to the arts than the sciences. In high school, she took “easy” academic classes like English and French correspondence during the summer to free up her schedule for the subjects she loved most—foods, choir, band, art, yearbook, and theatre.Kate began cooking at a young age after moving out and getting married at just 18. Her culinary journey started with a dishwasher job at a fishing lodge and evolved through roles at KFC, Pizza Hut, Denny's, and Mr. Mikes. By the age of 20, she was managing both a Subway and a hotel pub.At 23, Kate moved to Vancouver to study graphic design and marketing at Emily Carr University and BCIT. She went on to freelance for over 15 years with her former business, Ames Design Studio, and held marketing and graphic design positions at the PG Free Press and the Northern Health Authority. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Kate experienced major life upheavals, including the loss of childcare, employment, her design business, and her late partner. With resilience and passion, she pivoted toward her lifelong dream of owning a food truck. Leveraging her background in marketing and design, she launched Baller Food, a business born of both creativity and necessity.Kate began by making meatballs in the kitchen of Birch and Boar, where she found mentorship and support from chef and owner William Miller. Using guerrilla marketing tactics, she sold meatballs on the streets of downtown Prince George and gradually built a following. Over two years, she vended at community events, music festivals, weddings, and schools, eventually expanding into a full-fledged food truck operation.Since then, it's been “balls to the wall.” From May to October, Kate focuses on contract events, travels to northern B.C. music festivals—including Valhalla and Riverboat Days in Terrace, Midsummer in Smithers, ArtsWells near Quesnel, and Robson Valley Music Festival in Dunster—and serves outlying communities such as Quesnel, Vanderhoof, and Mackenzie. She also continues to grow retail sales, with products now available at PG Urban Shroomery and soon at Blackwood Gifts. To improve visibility, Kate has partnered with CO-OP and Superstore and has a regular setup at the Chevron Cardlock in the BCR site. She posts her monthly event schedule and weekly updates on Facebook and Instagram, encouraging followers to set alerts so they never miss where she'll be parked. In the off-season (October to May), Baller Food shifts its focus to hot lunch programs at local schools, event catering, and hot-and-ready meals. This fall, Kate will also launch cooking classes for kids at the South Fort George Family Resource Centre, continuing her mission to nourish and inspire the community through food.

Show Notes: Jennifer Gibbs shares her journey as a woman and artist who worked in the entertainment field and later became a mother. She enrolled in a PhD program at NYU in comparative literature, focusing on performance and the embodiment of the female and feminine. She was cast in various off Broadway shows and earned her actors equity card. During her graduate studies, Jennifer received a Mellon Fellowship for teaching. She talks about her decision to focus full time on acting and writing for theater and her recognition of limited support in academia for multidisciplinary approaches to performance. Jennifer worked in the theater for a decade, mainly acting and writing plays. In her mid-30s, she became a mother, experiencing unexpected pregnancy losses and serial grief. This led to a shift in focus to writing, which was fruitful and collaborative. She was the artist in residence at the Here Arts Center, where she developed a play called Sounding, which integrated film, music, lyrics, and scene work. The play premiered three weeks before her son Liam's birth. From Working in Theatre to Working in Television As their family relocated to Los Angeles, Jennifer became interested in writing for television and screen. She learned to write for television at the suggestion of an executive at HBO. She took the leap, not knowing how to write for television, but found it fulfilling. For the last decade, Jennifer has been writing new plays and television worlds. Recently, she started a small independent production company, aiming to empower women creators to produce work that might not be produced in film and television or in the multi-platform arena. Jennifer's most recent project is called Riot Mom, a multi-platform universe story that unfolds on various distribution platforms. The company is driven by her connection to her work and her personal connection to her work. The first project they are producing is called Riot Mom, a multi-platform universe story that unfolds on audio, live, and television platforms. Early Influences from the Art World The conversation turns to Jennifer's father, Tom Gibbs, a Chicago-based artist. Jennifer describes her experience as a child of a sculptor, how she was introduced to and influenced by the artists around her. They often had a band of sculptors at their house, some in assistant positions and colleagues from Chicago. They would have meals together, discuss work, and have opinions on various projects. Despite not wanting to do sculpture, Jennifer loved drawing and painting, and would often work in one of the studios. A Young Actor on Tour Jennifer shares her experience as an actor during her national Broadway tour, describing it as exciting and workmanlike. She learned from the technical staff about the complex process of moving from one place to another, like a circus. Gibbs describes the experience as a crash course in self-producing, directing, and balancing personal and professional boundaries. She also discusses the challenges of maintaining a balance in a collaborative environment, where one must leave their family, home, and friends behind to work on a show. Jennifer believes that maintaining healthy boundaries is a challenge for anyone working in theater, film, or television. She found the experience intensive and valuable, making lasting friendships with people she collaborated with in New York.  The Artistic Process and Healing Grief Jennifer shares how she processed the grief of two stillbirths through her work. At the time, she was working on a film based on a stage adaptation of an Ibsen play. She met Andre Gregory, who was casting Vanya on 42nd Street, and they had a two-hour conversation in a cafe. Although she did not get the role, she received support, encouragement, and mentorship from Gregory. He advised her to make her own project which inspired Jennifer and others from the Harvard theater community, including Jeannie Simpson and Peter Hirsch,  to create a play called Lady from the Sea. They spent two years working on the play in Jennifers' living room, creating a unique and rarely produced piece. Jennifer talks about her journey to create a multi-disciplinary theatre show based on a film adaptation of an Ibsen play. She discovered a deep connection to grief and loss in the original play, which they had not considered in their previous work. After a decade of working on the project, Jennifer realized that grief is a form of radical transformation that is generative and creative. She learned that denying or overcoming grief can deprive individuals of the opportunity to create and acquiesce to the next stage in their transformation. A First Book and a New Project Jennifer's first book, "Oh Mother," is a literary non-fiction book about serial grief and the value of a certain approach to grief. The book is experiential and personal, and was written during the pandemic. Her journey highlights the importance of embracing grief and embracing change in life. She talks about a world created with Jenny Castro, that explores the intersection of women's creative process. The story revolves around two middle-aged women who were estranged from their riot girl days in the 90s, and they reunite in a suburban context. She talks about the project, the production team, pitching, and another project called Train Hoppers, a  multi-platform, single episode of a story that can be experienced online, at live events, or through a live pop-up event.  Influential Harvard Professors and Courses  Jennifer discusses her experiences with Marjorie Garber's Shakespeare and her seminar on ghostwriters.  She was influenced by playwright Adrianne Kennedy, who became a lifelong mentor and friend after graduating from Harvard. Jennifer also discusses her love for 16th-century British poetry and the pressure to conform to Aristotelian standards in the world of television, film, and playwriting.  Timestamps: 00:02: Journey Through Comparative Literature and Theatre  03:30: Balancing Academia and Acting 06:03: Transition to Motherhood and Writing O9:20: Exploring Television and Film  12:36: Learning from Her Father's Artistic Journey 20:04: National Broadway Tour Experience  26:01: Processing Grief Through Art  37:58: Current Venture: "Riot Mom"  45:46: Influences from Harvard Links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jennifer-gibbs-27b91386/ Featured Non-profit This week's featured non-profit of this episode is American Pilgrims On the Camino, recommended by Kelly Murphy Mason who reports: “Hello all. Nestled along the Somerset coast, Watchet is a captivating harbor town steeped in history and blessed with breathtaking geography. Watchet's origins trace back to a possible Iron Age fort, Daw's Castle, before evolving into a bustling settlement under Saxon influence, earning names like Weced and Waeced. Viking incursions in the 10th century failed to extinguish its spirit, as the town's maritime trade steadily flourished. Amidst this historical tapestry, the town's church, dedicated to Saint Decuman, stands as a testament to its enduring legacy. Watchet isn't merely a town; it's a living narrative of resilience and natural wonder, inviting all who venture there to partake in its captivating story. My Special Guest is Bobbie Rammond Bobbie Rammond is a history and archaeology enthusiast, with a degree in history, heritage, and archaeology from Plymouth University. During his time at university, he discovered his passion for history while working at Dunster Castle. This led him to delve into paranormal investigations, which he has been doing for several years. Last year, with Halloween approaching, Bobbie had an idea to combine his love for history and the paranormal by organising historical walking tours of Dunster. This sparked the creation of Extours, with their first event being the Dunster Ghost Walk. Ghost Lore The Somerset specter, Old Mother Leakey, tied to storms and shipwrecks in Minehead, haunted Alexander Leakey's home in 1636. Witnesses claimed the ghost suffocated a young relative, and Elizabeth, Alexander's wife, faced its torment. Old Mother Leakey assigned Elizabeth two tasks: retrieve a gold necklace and deliver a cryptic message to her brother-in-law, Dr. John Atherton, Bishop of Waterford. This seemingly benign message unravelled scandalous secrets, including Atherton's affair with Susan Leakey, branded as adultery and incest. Dark rumors of child murder to hide the affair swirled, leading to Atherton's hanging in December 1640. Old Mother Leakey's ghost played a role in this tragedy, leaving the Leakey family's fortunes in ruins and birthing the legend of her storm-summoning powers. Premature Burial Premature burial, often referred to as live burial or vivisepulture, is the horrifying ordeal of being interred while still alive and was once a very real problem. Taphophobia, the irrational dread of being buried alive, ranks among the most prevalent phobias, haunting the subconscious fears of many with its chilling specter. In this episode, you will be able to: 1. Uncover the story of Lady Wyndham and more about the problem of premature burial 2. Explore myths, history and accounts of murder from Watchet 3. Explore the fascinating folkore and ghost lore of Watchet. On this episode of Haunted History Chronicles, we delve into the intriguing town of Dunster and its connection to Gallox Bridge. Join host Michelle Fisher and guest Bobbie Rammond as they explore the history of this ancient packhorse bridge and the fascinating role it played in the location's past. From Dunster's own harbour to the potential link between King Arthur and the area, we uncover the secrets and mysteries that surround this historic medieval village. But the eerie tales don't stop there. Prepare yourself for spine-chilling accounts of paranormal activity from a sceptic who experienced unexplained occurrences in their room at a local establishment. Objects moved mysteriously, and strange sounds filled the night, leaving one guest unable to find a logical explanation. Could there be a ghostly presence at play? The Gruesome Consequences of Rebellion: "These men were known to all in this village as they were surrounded by weeping relatives and friends. After the hangings came the gruesome dismemberment of the corpses and the burning of their entrails."— Bobbie Rammond My Special Guest is Bobbie Rammond Bobbie Rammond is a history and archaeology enthusiast, with a degree in history, heritage, and archaeology from Plymouth University. This sparked the creation of Extours, with their first event being the Dunster Ghost Walk, which was a great success. Building on this achievement, Bobbie now hosts various events in Somerset, where people thoroughly enjoy the intriguing combination of history and the paranormal. Haunting Locations Bobbie takes us on a haunted tour of Dunster's infamous location, "The Luttrell Arms," where ghostly sightings of a monk and a ghost dog have been reported. Carvings of ships in the wood panels hint at a connection to Dunster's harbour, adding to the intrigue of this old building with a rich history. As we continue wandering through Dunster, we stumble upon the Forester's Arm, once a candle and soap production facility turned inn. Learn about the dark past of its owner and the connection to a road previously known as Gallows Road, suggesting a chilling proximity to executions.  Haunting, Dark History of Dunster Gallox Bridge is a picturesque medieval packhorse bridge, dating to the 15th century, which runs across the River Avill on the southern outskirts of Dunster. The Bridge formed part of the main transportation route to the wool market in Dunster from the South. The bridge's name originally meant 'gallows bridge,' for a public place of execution that stood on a hill just outside the village. In 1685, three men from Dunster, Henry Lackwell, John Geanes and William Sully were hanged at the gallows for their part in the Monmouth Rebellion. In this episode, you will be able to: 1. Uncover the history of Gallox Bridge and its significance in Dunster 2. Explore Mother Leaky's ghostly encounters 3. Explore the fascinating folkore and ghost lore of Dunster and connections with local traditions 4. Explore haunted locations and paranormal encounters. The show.Jackie stepped outside the back door of her cottage and breathed in the early August morning on this prince among days.It had been wet overnight and the beads of rain sat like quicksilver; crazy diamonds running over the dragon frilled leaves of the “Milly Molly Mandy”. It had always been one of Jackie's dearest sights and never failed to remind her how lucky she was to live here, surrounded by simple, but unbelievably complex beauty and drenched in the sacred wonder of countryside. This was her religion. This gave her the spiritual fix that others sought in scripture, mosque and temple. She felt tiny- small and yet massive at one and the same time and the hills, the fields, the shoreline and the sky seemed to shrink, until they almost became a hedgerow that she lived under and scuttled along, about her bucolic business every day. The universe in a pot.She didn't think any of this of course; she was getting her entries ready for the show. Some of her craft entries (embroidery, anything crochet with a practical application) had gone to the Tithe Barn the previous evening, but the real stars (group of tomatoes, vegetable chutney, pickled eggs, three runner beans, a basket of five herbs, small flower arrangement, dahlias and so on and so on) all of these were last minute arrangments that relied pivotally on freshness and that bloom of fecund promise that begins to die as soon as it is picked.Everything had to be there by ten so that judging could take place in time for the visiting “Magi of the marrows” to leave their decisions framed in certificate and pickled in rosettes.Jackie's husband had baked a cake.Every year, apart from the last two scuppered by Covid, the men of the village cast aside their masculinity and strayed, shyly into the feminine world of baking. How we all laughed as Geoff bashfully presented his lemon drizzle; or Rob, his great ham hands trembling, gently placed his carrot cake on the trestle table?
