Few developers have had as long and prolific a career as our guest, Graeme Bayless. From working on mainframes, to selling Kaypros, to playtesting Accolade's launch titles, to producing games for SSI, Sega Technical Institute, Hyperbole Studios, Dynamix, EA, Eidos, and NetherRealm Studios. In Part 4, we talk about the decade that Graeme spent in the wilderness of the game's industry, during which he worked on titles such as Tomb Raider Legend and Anniversary at Crystal Dynamics, tried to salvage projects like Enslaved, Dead to Rights Retribution and Splatterhouse at Namco, returned to sports titles at 2K Games before getting the chance to start his own studio, Fierce Wombat. Graeme gives us amazing insights into the life of a game dev like few others can or would. I had Robert Cantwell on last year in episode 23, where he joined me shortly after launching Compound Kings in late 2020. Before founding Upholdings and launching Compound Kings, Robert had an incredible career, both as an operator and an investor. Robert started his career as an analyst at Elevation Partners, which was co-founded by U2's lead singer Bono. He then worked at the long short hedge fund Meru Capital before serving as Everlane CFO for five years. Robert founded Upholdings in 2019 and officially launched Compound Kings in late 2020. In this episode, we cover why Robert is obsessed with how we think, process information and make decisions. The single biggest lessons that Robert has taken away from launching and scaling Compound Kings over the last two years, how being a compounding focused investor is different than being solely growth or value focused, why he skips to the back of investment books and goes straight to the source material to form his own opinions about the contents of the book, the investing tools that he and his team use daily at Compound Kings to beat the S&P 500, and his three-step process for consuming thinking through and ultimately coming to conclusions about everything that he reads.

Boy avec leur single “I will follow”, puis War avec “Sunday Bloody Sunday”, ou enfin Joshua Tree avec “With or without you”. This episode features an interview with Roger McNamee. His official bio at Elevation Partners, an investment firm, says that since 2017 he has been involved in ”a campaign to trigger a national conversation about the dark side of social media“. He is the author of a book, Zucked: Waking Up to the Facebook Catastrophe, published by HarperCollins in 2019, that has an account of his role as an investor and advisor to the company and his ultimate recognition of the harms it causes at scale. To many listeners, his voice on these issues is well known- he is a frequent commentator on technology on shows such as “Squawk Alley” CNBC and on Ali Velshi's show on MSNBC, and he is a regular at conferences that delve into topics at the intersection of tech and democracy. He knows the tech bro culture well enough to have served as a technical advisor for multiple seasons of HBO's “Silicon Valley” series, a show that lampoons the people and industry there. Roger also a philanthropist and a musician- he plays in the bands Moonalice and Doobie Decibel System, on bass and guitar. If you follow him on Twitter @moonalice, you will get to hear his frequent livestreams, sometimes solo, and sometimes with the band. We caught up with Roger to get his sense of where the movement to regulate and hold technology firms to account is at the moment, particularly in the U.S.

Today, we will be diving into Facebook. A business that requires little introduction, Facebook was launched in 2004 from Marc Zuckerberg's Harvard dorm room. Zuckerberg has since grown Facebook into the largest social network in the world and continues to operate the business today. To break down Facebook, I am first joined by Robert Cantwell, founder and CIO of Upholdings. Rob's unique background makes him an ideal person to speak on Facebook. Rob shared a dorm with Zuckerberg, went on to work at Elevation Partners, a large private investor in Facebook, and eventually became CFO of Everlane, where expansion was closely tied to the growth of Instagram and its advertising tools. We touch on how Facebook successfully navigated the transition from desktop to mobile, what drives the value of the network, and where Facebook may drive value in the future.   I am then joined by Jesse Pujji, a familiar voice as a host of Business Breakdowns. Jesse's time as co-founder and CEO at Ampush make him ideal to break down the advertising business of Facebook. During our conversation, Jesse outlines the basic dynamics of the Facebook ad ecosystem, the economic proposition to an advertiser, and how to assess risks to Facebook's control of the digital ad market.   Facebook is such an interesting business, and we could likely speak for hours on the potential opportunities for growth. We decided to focus on the core advertising business today, given it represents 98% of revenue. In the future, we want to dedicate individual Breakdowns to WhatsApp, Oculus, and potentially other Facebook initiatives that are worthy of their own deep dives alone. I hope you enjoy this conversation on Facebook.   For the full show notes, transcript, and links to the best content to learn more, check out the episode page here. ----- This episode is brought to you by Canalyst. Roger McNamee has been a successful Silicon Valley investor for thirty five years.  He co-founded Silver Lake and Elevation Partners, two very successful private equity funds.  He also plays bass and guitar in the bands Moonalice and Doobie Decibel System.  He holds a BA from Yale and an MBA from Dartmouth's Tuck School. He has written 4 books, the latest one titled Zucked: Waking up to the Facebook Catastrophe.   Some interesting insights from this episode:  Roger had a very unusual approach to tech investing which allowed him to be highly successful.  Learn why he started Elevation Partners with U2's Bono.  Hear how one pivotal meeting with Mark Zuckerberg would forever alter the course of Facebook.  It was Facebook's lack of anonymity that Roger felt was key to bridging the gap to a much larger mainstream audience that prior social media companies had failed to reach.  While they are technically a platform, Facebook acts more like a media company by using sophisticated algorithms to control the content that users see on the site.  Social media manipulates us by exploiting the weakness in human psychology.  Learn what filter bubbles are and why they've contributed to our accepting and spreading false information.  “Technology has changed the way we engage with society, substituting passive consumption of content and ideas for civic engagement, digital communications for conversation.”  “Excellence is an outcome that reflects mastery of an activity in a time and in a place.”

It's All Happening returns to the airwaves with one of the most important and culturally relevant discussions of today. Roger McNamee, Silicon Valley legend and author of the new book Zucked - Waking Up to the Facebook Catastrophe takes us through the monumental problem that social media is presenting in today's culture. Never before has such an influential insider taken a step back to rethink his earlier position that's resulted in becoming a whistle blower of the practices and methods that these platforms inflict upon us daily. Zucked must be read and each one of us must honestly take on this problem as best we can. This is one of the most important topics ever covered on this podcast. Enjoy. Intro rant - My take on social medias growing influence into problematic territories Roger McNamee began his career in 1982 at T. Rowe Price Associates, where he managed the top performing Science & Technology Fund and co-managed the New Horizons Fund. In 1991, he launched Integral Capital Partners, the first crossover fund (combining later stage venture capital with public market investments), in partnership with Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Morgan Stanley & Co. In 1999, Roger co-founded Silver Lake Partners, the first private equity fund focused on technology businesses. In 2004, Roger and his partners launched Elevation Partners, an investment partnership focused on the intersection of media and technology.

Since April 2017, Roger has been engaged, along with former Google design ethicist Tristan Harris and others, in a campaign to trigger a national conversation about the dark side of social media. Roger’s book about that experience, Zucked: Waking Up to the Facebook Catastrophe, was published in February 2019.
