Ross Murphree, President of Old Tyme Grocery Group, joins us today to discuss his family-owned restaurants, which include Old Tyme Grocery, Sandra's Café and Health Food Store, and BJ's in Broussard. The patriarch behind this conglomerate of eateries is Ross's father, Glenn Murphree, who originally purchased Olde Tyme Grocery in 1982. It has become one of Lafayette's most iconic spots known for its classic poor boy sandwiches made on fresh Langlinais Bakery bread every day. Old Tyme Grocery has been recognized for its excellence by national publications, being voted #1 Budget Dining in the Nation on Trip Advisor Travelors' Choice Awards and ranked #2 in USA Today's Best Po'Boys in Louisiana. Old Tyme Grocery's Glenn Murphree in the early days. Ross recounted the story of Glenn's foray into the poor boy business. A native of Chalmette, Glenn attended USL in the late 1970's, and enjoyed his time in college, driving a Budweiser truck for Schilling Distributing and managing the Keg. In May of 1982, Glenn bought a little grocery store at 218 W. St. Mary Blvd. near USL's campus, named Old Tyme Grocery. At that time, it had aisles of groceries and a small delicatessan space, which was frequented by the neighbors on small grocery runs. Short on cash, Glenn borrowed $8,000 from his dad and $8,000 from the bank, and he was on his way. Interestingly, Glenn had little to no experience in the food business at the time, having worked for only two weeks at a poor boy shop while in high school and swearing he would never do it again! Now, 42 years later, things seemed to have worked out for this highly successful endeavor. Old Tyme Grocery's menu is simple and hasn't changed much in the past 42 years. Sixty per cent of its sales revolve around the highly popular shrimp poboy. "It keeps us in business," Ross says. Besides offering deli meats and gourmet specials, Old Tyme is known for its catering, and the restaurant feeds UL's teams when they travel out of town. During UL's summer football camp, Old Tyme will prepare up to 1500 bag lunches in one day. There are different nightly specials where you can order a full-size poboy for $7.00 including tax. Monday's special is a whole meatball poboy; Tuesday is ham; Wednesday is sausage, and Thursday is turkey. If you are looking for a filling meal or great leftovers, there is no better deal. The snowball stand, located right behind Old Tyme, is open from April 1 through September 30 each year. Old Tyme Grocery operates at a high volume of sandwiches, averaging 700 on Monday through Thursday, and up to 1000 on any given Friday. During Fridays in Lent, business doubles, and up to 2000 sandwiches will be served. Ross says that they can go through 600 pounds of shrimp on Fridays in Lent, which are always Gulf white shrimp. Ross Murphree says, "Old Tyme Grocery was my dad's first child. Today, Ross serves as President, and three other Murphree children, Becca, Brad, and Greg are involved in various aspects of the business. For more information on Old Tyme Grocery's menu, visit https://www.oldetymegrocery.com/#/ BJ's in Broussard is another popular lunch spot owned by the Murphrees. In the mid-1990's, Glenn was interested in expanding Old Tyme Grocery and came across the site of BJ's. He and his wife, Cherie, only had three children and the timing seemed good. But plans changed when a fourth and then fifth child came along quickly and the decision was made to leave BJ's as is. Ross gave a big shout out to "Ms. Jenny" who was employed by BJ's several years before the Murphrees purchased the restaurant and is still there 27 years later. BJ's food is "in the Old Tyme tradition," and you can get the same poboys as you can at Old Tyme. Plus, they offer two plate lunch items daily. BJ's is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day except Sunday. Located at 107 N. Morgan Avenue, Broussard LA 70518, you can find more information about daily menu ch...

When it comes to nutrition and dietary choices, there are numerous options and opinions to consider. One particular approach that has gained popularity in recent years is the Carnivore Diet. This way of eating emphasizes the consumption of animal foods while eliminating or severely restricting plant-based foods. But what drives someone to adopt such an eating plan that's growing in popularity all the time? To gain insights into this unique journey, I had the pleasure of interviewing Jonathan Griffiths, also known as Carnivore Muscle. Jonathan's journey into the carnivore lifestyle began four years ago when he first heard about World Carnivore Month. At the time, he was working at a vegan health food shop and noticed that many of the customers who followed a plant-based diet were not in good health. This observation prompted him to question the efficacy of the food they were consuming and the supplements they were purchasing. As a nutrition professional with a degree in the field, he had a solid understanding of the importance of animal foods in maintaining a healthy diet.Thank you so much for listening to my podcast. I had so many “aha” moments during this conversation. You could say that Stephanie Dodier helps women break away from diet culture. But that doesn’t do her work justice. She promotes counterculture principles that permanently change how women relate to their bodies, including how to de-link self-love from body love and how to disrupt harmful generational knowledge transfer. She is empowering women to change the world from the inside out. Stephanie is a Clinical Nutritionist who created the Going Beyond the Food Method, a cornerstone of her Conquer and Thrive program. She uses her own experience with food and her body to sustain her investment in sharing how she approaches personal health.   Here are the main topics of this amazing conversation: Why the podcast has a new name Introducing Stephanie Dodier and how she inspires What “being healthy” has come to mean 14:00 Why Stephanie cares so much about the culture associated with being healthy 15:00 Stephanie’s experience accepting and loving her body is ... other people Many sectors profit off of women feeling like they aren’t good enough Stephanie’s journey with food and her body Women who ask for help with weight gain are ostracized by society because they don’t fit the typical need profile About diet culture and societally imposed body ideals for women There is diversity in women’s body size going back millennia- as far as we can trace back How and why the medical industry participates in diet culture Self-love versus body neutrality The effect of living in a patriarchal society on “programming” girls’ relationships with their body Generational norms contribute to the persistence of diet culture Jenn’s early experiences with diet culture How to begin pushing back against diet culture 43:00 intuition 43:20 how to deal with sabotage- how to re-think sabotage Redefining health to be more than just a physical body Linking “optimum health” to social justice Moving away from the idea that everyone is meant to prioritize being perfectly healthy Diet culture affects girls’ behavior as early as elementary school How the pandemic is affecting body relationships We should be teaching in schools how to process emotion, which would affect our relationship with food How Jenn and others feel when processing all of the topics covered in this episode The Conquer and Thrive program and Stephanie’s podcast  Hoping this episode supports you on the path of knowing, accepting, and loving who you truly are. Learn more about our amazing show partners I ended this episode thinking about my daughter, so I want to share with you some products that I think will help us reinforce our beliefs with our actions and teach our daughters to take care of themselves outside of the diet culture we discuss in this episode. I’ve tried these as a mom- I hope they work for you! We love smoothies because they’re quick and easy. I started adding in Sunwarrior’s Beauty Greens Collagen Booster in pina colada flavor. She likes that it tastes healthy, I like that it’s got probiotics and is plant-based with greens in it. I am encouraging my daughter to think about her skin as a whole. Skin Essence is Canadian-founded, organic, non-GMO, not animal-tested- this company is one that we love and have around the house, which is why my daughter’s been giving them a try (and my husband and son too!). You can even talk to the company to get advice on which products may be right to try first. I’ve mentioned before a plant-based iron organic herb tonic that my daughter has been using. It’s been helping her feel a lot better, especially around her periods- it’s common for young girls first getting their period to be anemic. Garden of Life’s mykind Organics liquid iron supplement is junk-free and helps her body uptake and absorb iron. This could help you moms too! And the flavor is fantastic- her favorite is cranberry lime. Another thing that I want to help my daughter with is reducing the problems that can be associated with having her period. Really Neutral Tonics from Saint Francis Herb Farm can help. I most love their menstrual tonic and PMS support, which you don’t have to use together. I hope some of these tips can help all your mamas out there, and if you don’t have a daughter, then I hope some of these tips and tricks can help you.  Create a more simple life with Saint Francis Herb Farm products. TSH Is Not A Thyroid Hormone

The Simplicity Sessions

In this episode of The Simplicity “Bite” Sessions, I am talking all about TSH, which is not a Thyroid Hormone.  TSH is often used to test the condition of the Thyroid if you are exhibiting Thyroid issues; however, TSH does NOT give the full picture. Testing for TSH can give you an idea as to whether your Thyroid is under or over-producing hormones. Unfortunately, screening for TSH is problematic because by the time changes in the amount of hormone that is produced could indicate that the problem is well underway. I recommend a series of tests that will provide a more holistic approach to detecting issues with your Thyroid including TSH, Free T4, Free T3, Reverse T3, TPO (Thyroid peroxidase), and TGAB (Anti-Thyroid Globulin). Here are the topics you are about to listen to in today’s “bite” session:  We need to do better for women who are having signs and symptoms of thyroid issues and being tested incorrectly Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) TSH tests are not a full thyroid workup Not a reliable screening The screening is an outdated approach  Functional practitioners and allopathic practitioners  agree that it is not a full thyroid screening TSH is produced in the pituitary gland in the brain TSH’s job is to stimulate the Thyroid to produce its hormones (T4 and T3) TSH is used for screening for Thyroid disease under the assumption based on how well you Thyroid is producing hormones Screening for TSH is problematic because by the time changes in the amount of hormone that is produced it could mean that there is something already going on Ranges of TSH can vary; however a number lower than 1 is concerning and will require more questions. Testing needs to be more holistic Here is a list of tests that you should be requesting: TSH - it’s part of the entire system and can provide information in conjunction with the rest of the list. Free T4 Free T3 - T4 and T3 need one another so it’s important to test both. Reverse T3 TPO - Thyroid peroxidase TGAB - Anti Thyroid Globulin Hoping that this mini-episode helps you better understand your symptoms, how and when they are showing up in your body, mood, and emotions. I am joined by my friend Dr.Stephanie Estima to today’s episode ( which is the first of two parts), to talks about how important is for us to change the narrative in regards to taking care of our bodies as women, to learn to pay attention to the signs and symptoms, honoring where we are at, having awareness about the different phases in our cycles and the energetic phases of the seasons as well. In the second part of our conversation we will dive deep into the concept of Ketogenic Diet for women, is it safe? Is it recommended? How to use it? Dr. Stephanie Estima is an expert in female metabolism and body composition. She is a doctor of chiropractic with a special interest in functional neurology, brain metabolism, and female physiology. She is particularly focused on distilling strategies in nutritional proxies, movement, posture, and mindset to actualize female potential, healthspan, longevity, and achievement. These are the main topics of this amazing conversation that you will probably like to listen to more than once: Estima talks about her background, how she started a podcast and wrote a book. Estima shares how she spent years without listening to her body. What is keto-cycling? How to take care of yourself during perimenopause and menopause. The normalization of menstrual pain comes from a strong patriarchal thinking. Menstrual pain is common, not normal. The crucial importance of rest and recovery. Your menstrual cycle is your hormonal report card. The impact stress has on the female body. The role of cortisol. How stress impacts your sex hormones Women need to engage in human connections.. The importance of our morning and evening habits and rituals. Move your body according to your cycles What are you grateful for? You need to have time for sex. Separate your productivity from your worth. Set a recovery day for your health. When you learn how to exercise (and when) your body responds correctly Build muscle and shift your composition. Hoping you can understand yourself better after listening to this episode and that you can put into action some of this knowledge to unfold a more loving and compassionate way to treat yourself!  Wishing more simplicity and ease in all that you do! I also have adrenal fatigue...I am exhausted, I have digestive issues, lots of gas and bloating, as well as constipation. I am a hot mess! I know it is a lot to ask, but do you have any recommendations?” To answer this question,  first I am going to recommend you to move your body with a moderate intensity of exercise. Secondly, your digestion needs to be assessed, you need to identify which foods are creating the gas and bloating in order to avoid them, if most of the foods are creating these unpleasant consequences, I suggest you have some Canadian Digestive Bitters from Saint Francis Herb Farm or digestive enzymes, especially if your gall bladder was removed. Thirdly, you want to look at your minerals and support your liver, Liver Hepato DR is a tonic and a tincture that I use in my practice and it is not only a great support for your liver but also helps to detoxify, assists the process of elimination and it is very anti-inflammatory. Today, I am excited to share a great talk I had with Victoria Albina during which we discussed very common themes in women’s lives. From what it’s like being “the good girl”, “the fixer” and taking on other people’s burdens and emotions. We talk about how to get ourselves out of these patterns while also becoming more observant rather than reactive.   Victoria Albina is a Certified Life Coach and Breathwork Meditation Guide with a passion for helping women realize that they are their own best healers, so they can break free from codependency, perfectionism, and people-pleasing and reclaim their joy.   She is a UCSF-trained Family Nurse Practitioner, has a Masters degree in Public Health from Boston University School of Public Health, and a BA in Latin American Studies from Oberlin College. Victoria has been working in health & wellness for over 20 years and lives on occupied Lenape territory in New York's Hudson Valley.   Here are the main topics of this amazing conversation: Victoria talks about her own healing journey. Victoria shares how she leads her practice. Expectations, obligations, and conceptualization of self can become patterns that deregultate the nervous system. The state of your nervous systems dictates the story that you feed into your body. What is the polyvagal system? How do you begin the work after you raise your awareness? Acceptance can be really challenging. Working on your balance. How we use distractions to get away from certain feelings. The role of dopamine in your body. Choose your actions intentionally. Learn to separate the circumstances of life and our thoughts. Victoria gives advice to those women who are ready to make the mindset shift but struggle with the consequences that this might bring to their relationships. Trust yourself to love yourself. Victoria shares her favorite tool against personal criticism.   Hoping this episode supports you on the path of knowing, accepting, and loving who you truly are. Drinking water and eating healthy fats is not helping… What can I do?” My first tip is for you to start adding collagen into your water or smoothies to become more hydrated and improve the quality of your skin from an internal perspective. I love Beauty Greens Collagen from SUNWARRIOR, these are collagen building peptides, which means that they are helping your body to produce collagen at a cellular level. When buying at SUNWARRIOR use the code simplicity2020 and save 10% off your purchase.   Are you properly exfoliating your skin? Do you know your skin type? I love exfoliants that have a powder base, those only require you to add a little water and then massage them into your skin. One of the reasons for dry skin could be lack of drainage and lymphatic support. The exfoliant that I use is called Facial In A Jarfrom Skin Essence Organics, I leave it on as a mask and it leaves my skin soft and beautiful. In today’s episode, I am happy to have a chance to introduce you to Melanie Huestis, she has been my own personal and intuitive healing coach for the last couple of years. Melanie Huestis is an intuitive energy coach with a big heart and a mouth to match. She's a straight shooter with a knack for helping women turn their muck into magic by empowering them to drop the old stories, wounding & BS to make room for what really matters. She uses a combination of energy healing, mediumship, and compassionate coaching to help clients shed old patterns, and open up to a more purposeful and happy life. She is passionate about boundaries, potato chips, and cats (not necessarily in that order) ... and the thing she enjoys most in life is authentic human connection. It doesn't need to be pretty ... but it needs to be real. She loves hard, sings poorly, and dances with abandon. Melanie makes it a priority to walk her talk and live the way she teaches — on purpose and with passion. Here are the main topics that we discuss in today’s episode: Melanie explains what she does and how she does it. Empowering people to meet their higher purposes. Replace your ‘shoulds’ with ‘coulds’. How can you support your energy levels? How do you clear your energy? Why do women tend to play small? You need help to clear the energy of previous lifetimes. Melanie explains the difference between our physical bodies and our souls. Melanie talks about new and old souls. You set the energetic tone for your environment. Our truth is something that we are often not ready to admit. It is exhausting to work on your energy at the beginning but practice makes it easier.   Don’t rush your process, dare to explore and clear your energy. 2020 has brought hair loss to a massive amount of women, and I include myself in this group. Last year I suffered from hair loss for the first time after childbirth. It impacted me around late July when I started noticing I was losing a lot of hair while washing it. In my case, it was directly caused by stress.   In this episode, I am diving deep into the most common reasons for hair loss, how you can support your hair and scalp health, lifestyle factors, and all you need to know to start the slow process towards healthier hair (Sorry! No quick fixes).   Here are the main topics of today’s episode: Why is your hair falling and getting thinner? The role of estrogen in hair loss. Your lifestyle matters. What are the nutrients that your hair needs? Lack of sleep and stress has an impact on your hair. Inflammation induces hair loss. The adrenal connection. Essential oils and supplements for your hair health. Learn to manage your levels of stress. Excessive shedding. Nutrient deficiencies trigger hair loss. High prolactin is another reason for hair loss. Autoimmune and androgenic alopecia. Are you getting enough protein? Is your blood sugar stable? Different supplements and therapies to support your scalp and hair.   I want you to think bigger than supplements and go beyond what is in the bottles. I hope this episode helps you to take a better look at how you are nourishing your body and the shifts in your lifestyle that you can make to not also help your hair but your whole health.     I am joined today by Amber Lynn Vitale to talk about the role that certain nutrients play in women’s bodies. We especially dive into how to treat iron deficiencies during our reproductive years, pregnancy and beyond. Iron supplements have a terrible reputation since some of them can cause constipation and other uncomfortable symptoms. Listen to today’s episode and find what the best ways and times are to consume iron either through your food choices or supplements.   Amber Lynn Vitale, CN, is a Certified Nutritionist in Integrative Nutrition and an Ayurvedic Clinical Consultant. Since early childhood, she has been fascinated with the power of foods, herbs, and dietary supplements to optimize health and, after earning a B.A. in Economics and Russian, she went on to pursue this passion. Since 1996 she has both worked in product retail, and maintained her own wellness practice, often working with doctors and holistic/integrative medical professionals promoting optimum health inside and out. Since 2010 she has reached a wider audience as a freelance content producer for several natural health publications, educating retailers and consumers alike on what quality really means in both foods and supplements. Amber has been a member of the Garden of Life Education team since 2014, continuing her mission by Empowering Extraordinary Health!   Here are the main topics of a conversation that will certainly continue on another episode: The Ayurveda approach with pregnant women. Why can a pregnant woman suffer from nutritional deficiencies? How can you test for iron deficiencies? The best iron options and how to consume them. Do digestive enzymes help your body better uptake the minerals from the food you are consuming? The role of iron for the fetus during pregnancy. How to make sure your baby or toddler is receiving enough iron nutrition. Adverse effects of low iron levels in babies. Recommendations for women during the postpartum stage. Why plant iron liquid is the best choice. Seasonal approaches to iron supplementation.   Wishing more simplicity and ease in all that you do!   You can connect to this episode on iTunes, Spotify, or Stitcher by searching The Simplicity Sessions, or visiting www.jennpike.com/podcast.   Learn more about Amber Lynn Vitale :  Garden of Life Garden of Life on Instagram Garden of Life on Facebook   Online working with Jenn: To register for my signature program The Hormone Project and work with me 1:1 to support your health, hormones, and more, please join the waitlist at www.jennpike.com/thehormoneproject.   You can now start this program at any time, take it at your own pace, and have a live group, weekly coaching classes, with me and my team as well. It is difficult to find one that actually increases the level of iron in your body without being hard to digest and cause constipation.   If you have a heavy cycle or you are getting your period often (every 21 to 25 days) this usually doesn’t leave enough time for your system to rebuild. My Kind Organics line from Garden of Life is what I have been using for many years. Garden of Life’s iron is the first and only certified USDA organic, non-GMO verified liquid plant iron, with an amazing cranberry-lime flavor. There is also B6 and B12 added to it, which is very important for women.   Here is my smoothie recipe for the day! Welcome to another episode of the Simplicity Project! Today I am having an amazing conversation with Lisa Karandat & Alexa Monahan from Good JuJu. Lisa and Alexa founded Good Juju to inspire and empower people to make small, incremental changes to their daily routine, with the hope that together we can change the world. They spent years working in the natural health industry, and have witnessed the power that pure, natural ingredients have on our health each and every day. They believe that what you put on your body is equally as important as what you put in your body. They also know that our daily choices matter, on a micro and macro level. For example, they've seen firsthand how beneficial organic farming is not only for the quality of ingredients it produces but also for the quality of the soil and the environment overall. They have also learned how destructive and unnecessary single-use plastics are to our health, the environment, and the future of our planet. Lisa and Alexa are passionate about natural health, about the environment, and they are passionate about change. They know that the journey to zero waste can feel overwhelming. You may feel like you don't know where to begin, fear you won't do it properly, or that you'll have to sacrifice quality or performance – but none of this is true. As Anne-Marie Bonneau says, "We don't need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly." Here are the main topics of this much-needed conversation: Lisa and Alexa share how they got involved in the natural health business. Lisa and Alexa share the reasons why Good Juju came into existence. Good Juju’s shampoo and conditioners are formulated along with a naturopath and a hairdresser. Good Juju’s laundry strips. How your body is impacted by toxic ingredients. Why are Good Juju’s products mostly compostable? How to use a shampoo and conditioner bar. Best way to store your bars. How you can make an impact with the choices that you make every day. The great benefits to your health from avoiding plastic.   You can make a difference, just take action! Start with the good and you will see how easy it is! Happy New Year! Today I have a special episode for you, where I share my reflections and thoughts about 2020 and the energy I want to bring into 2021.   I am sharing with you 10 different teachings I took from this year, making it positive but also real. We need to clear the junk and step forward to be ready to receive the abundance that is coming for us in 2021.   Here are the main topics of this episode: How March 2020 changed all our plans and projections. 2020 was an incredible growth opportunity. Always listen to your intuition. Celebrate failure, since it is the first step for growth and transformation. Choose the energy and people you want to spend your time around. Growth happens depending on the quality of our conversations and questions. Embrace your feminine cycles. The doors I closed in 2020. Getting more flexible. Collaboration and community. Energy work. Improve your relationship with money. Develop healthy and clear boundaries.   Take the dreams and the goals that you have and ask yourself: Do they still serve you? Are you recycling your goals year after year? Even if you consider you are failing, that is still growth, you are moving forward. Get out of your head and realize how you want to feel in 2021. Sending you massive love and wishing more simplicity and ease in all that you do!   You can connect to this episode on iTunes, Spotify, or Stitcher by searching The Simplicity Sessions, or visiting www.jennpike.com/podcast.   Learn more about Laura Anderson ND  : Dr. Laura Anderson ND, is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor and has been practicing since 2010. I hope you are having a great time during the holidays after a tough year, definitely one different from any other in the past. In today’s episode, we are going to talk about digestion, gut health, and also poop. We will dive deep into the root causes of the signs your digestive system is giving you, such as gas, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. This episode is special because I am introducing Laura Bourne, the newest addition to our team!. Laura Bourne is a certified nutritional practitioner and her background is as an HR executive, she spent her entire career having difficult conversations as well as building amazing relationships with the people she has worked with. Here are the main subjects of this beautiful conversation with Laura Bourne:   What if it was as simple as changing your diet and lifestyle? How does healthy digestion look like and feel like? The ideal length, color and size of your poop. Checking transit time is really important How much do you whipe? The anatomy of a fart Abdominal pain 101 How long does it take to start getting rid from your discomfort? Common foods that can hurt your digestive system. Healthier versions for dairy and gluten. Essential oils for gut support. Make the time and space to move your bowels. How to apply essential oils. Start practicing healthy habits with your family.     Health does not have to be inaccessible, scary or overwhelming, it is fun, sexy, and easy!  Wishing more simplicity and ease in all that you do!   You can connect to this episode on iTunes, Spotify, or Stitcher by searching The Simplicity Sessions, or visiting www.jennpike.com/podcast.     Learn more about Dr. Laura Bourne :  Laura was an HR executive for 17 years. She was the person that had to plan and deliver really bad news (tough conversations like you didn’t get the job, we don’t think you are a fit, you are under investigation, you are fired). After hundreds (thousands?) of tough conversations that would make you squirm, she noticed the people who could get back up again all shared one thing in common: resiliency. Determined to understand more of how nutrition, stress, sleep, and emotions affects human performance, she returned to school to become a Holistic Nutritionist. She approaches her Nutrition Coaching from the viewpoint of productivity & performance. She teaches tired and burned out leaders, particularly moms, how to make time and space for wellness, and sje integrates doTERRA essential oils into my business.   Online working with Jenn: To register for my signature program The Hormone Project and work with me 1:1 to support your health, hormones, and more, please join the waitlist at www.jennpike.com/thehormoneproject.   You can now start this program at any time, take it at your own pace, and have a live group, weekly coaching classes, with me and my team as well. How Alcohol Impacts Your Health with Jenn Pike

The Simplicity Sessions

I recorded this episode for you! I have noticed a great increase in the consumption of alcohol in women in my life and practice due to the amount of stress, just as a result of life happening in 2020. Alcohol consumption creates a domino effect on our health, causing other struggles. When we drink too much, we tend to eat too much and we are often directed to foods that don't honor or nourish our bodies, we can have interrupted sleep patterns, we can also notice more inflammation and gut issues, and even weight gain.   I want to bring awareness to this topic that seems to be normalized.   Here are the main topics of today’s episode: Why does alcohol impact women differently than men? Alcohol contributes to massive oxidative stress. Increasing levels of alcohol impact your gut microbiome. Your symptoms are a result of your decisions. Alcohol contributes to more toxicity in your liver. Are you supporting your body to detoxify? Increased alcohol will impact your relationship with cortisone and cortisol. Why do you drink? Seven Imbalances in a Woman’s Body: PMS and PMDD: You Are not Meant to Suffer with Jenn Pike

Today I am going to take you on the journey of understanding the difference between PMS and PMDD, unfortunately, this is another subject in which we haven't got the proper education, and our girls are suffering due to this miseducation. I recently read a message that was supposed to be a little text for yourself in the morning that said something like this: “Dear beauty, I know today is the first day of your period but you are not meant to suffer.” So many of us have grown up believing that we are to dread our period, like some sort of curse and that it is impossible to not be moody and emotional, that our boobs are going to hurt and we will be crampy and in pain. These beliefs have only fed the disconnection from our bodies. Please listen: It does not have to be this way! That is why I am dedicating this episode to talking about PMS and PMDD, so you can tell the difference and have more tools to read the signs your body is giving you.   Here are the main topics of today’s episode: What can you expect a week prior to your period? PMS (Premenstrual syndrome): symptoms and signs. PMDD (Premenstrual dysphoric disorder) is much less common than PMS. The emotional signs that you shouldn’t ignore. Root causes of your dis-ease. The limitations of the regular blood tests. The right tests to assess your hormonal health. Why you should track your cycle. Moving your body according to the different phases of your menstrual cycle. Triggers for PMS. How to help your body to get rid of the excess of hormones. Do not neglect your protein intake! Quality sleep is a must! Are you supplementing well? Tips to reduce your stress. The products you are using also have an impact on how you are feeling. The relationship between antidepressants and gut function. Progesterone and your brain. Castor oil benefits.   Ladies, I hope you learned something from this episode, something that you can put into practice or may be information that can help a woman you love realize that none of us needs to suffer from our periods, but rather take them as an opportunity to listen to the signs they give us every single month in regards to our overall health. Today I am excited for this new addition to the Audacious Woman Series which has been focused on seven common imbalances in a woman’s body, and this time I will dive deep into our Thyroid. But before I go any further you need to know that I am not your practitioner, I don’t know you personally, and that is the reason why I can only share general information to keep your awareness up. If you enter my program The Hormone Project we can begin working one on one with Dr. Laura Anderson hone in on your story, in order to help you reach a better understanding of your body and the signs it is sending you.   In this episode I will recommend what you should ask your doctor and what tests and elements of your blood work that need a closer look. I will also explain the functions of your thyroid and the impact it has on our overall health.   Here are the main topics of another episode in this awesome series: What is your thyroid responsible for? Different types of thyroid inflammation in your body. What are the signs of hypothyroidism? How can you tell if your thyroid is hyperactive? Autoimmune conditions that affect thyroids. The gut is where everything begins. How can you be diagnosed with Hashimoto’s? What does receiving “help” for your thyroid look like in the medical world? You can still struggle with symptoms even when you are taking thyroid medication. Digging into the root of what is going on in your body takes time. You have to address what is going on in your gut and rearrange your lifestyle choices in order to heal. Choose the right products to help your body detoxify. Get better quality sleep. Are you still consuming dairy and gluten? The thyroid doesn’t like to be overstimulated. Supplementation to help the thyroid. Nothing is isolated in your body. Postpartum thyroid health You have to serve yourself first, your family needs you. What tests to ask for? You need to test and not guess. Illness and healing doesn't happen linearly. Blood sugar stability matters! Tools for healing other than supplementation. The mental and emotional aspects affecting your thyroid.   I hope you can take advantage of this basic information on how to take care and support your thyroid as a starting point of your healing journey. This week, we are diving into the third part of the series about the Seven Most Common Imbalances in a Woman's Body, and today’s topic is all about Progesterone and Ovulation.   Not so long ago women’s period was recognized as the fifth vital sign, and doctors were instructed to ask girls and women about their periods as an indicator of their overall health. The truth is that even with these medical advances, women still don’t receive proper instruction about their bodies. If we were empowered as women we wouldn't be suffering so much, women are struggling, and this is the whole reason I created an entire program, masterclasses, and series to educate women about what has been happening to their bodies since the beginning of time.   Here are the main topics of this third piece of a series meant for every woman: The functions of progesterone. Are you making enough progesterone? The luteal phase is the only time when we make progesterone. What happens when you have PCOS? The truth about what happens to your body when you are on birth control and what can happen when you get off the pill. Signs and symptoms of progesterone deficiency. Understanding your cervical mucus. Testing for progesterone deficiency. How to detect ovulation. When to think about starting bioidentical hormone therapy. How can you make more progesterone? Your period is a beautiful gift! How can you support a healthy level of progesterone? Baseline supplements. Reduce your stress! Repeat the things that make you feel good. You know it because you feel it!   Hoping this episode helps you to approach the healing of your hormones with more compassion and more understanding. Keep showing up for yourself! This week, we are diving into the second part of the series about the Seven Most Common Imbalances in a Woman´s Body, and today’s topic is all about Estrogen Detoxification.   I am often reached out by women asking for recommendations about “a good detox” or “a juice cleanse”, and I am sorry to tell you, it is not that simple. There are different phases of detoxification in our bodies, and it is also crucially important to know what it that you are detoxing from. There are many substances you can detoxify from, like environmental toxins, chemicals, medications, and parasites just to name a few. In today’s episode,  we are talking about detoxification from estrogen and how to facilitate the liver and gut’s functions which are the main organs helping your body through this process.   As women, we are producing estrogen on a daily basis and that is why detoxifying from estrogen is not something you will only do once in your life, but several times throughout  your life.   Here are the main topics of the second part of this series: Your liver is the queen of the organs! The consequences of an exhausted liver The first step of detoxification is happening through the liver and the gut. Food sources that can help your system detoxify. Reduce your exposure to chemicals, dairy, sugar, gluten, and even watch your animal protein intake. Protein powders, animal or plant-based? The effects that alcohol and coffee have on your body Why you should include Vitamin C in your diet. The amazing benefits of organic green tea! How to alkalize your system and reduce acidity. You need exposure to diversity. Seed cycling Managing your body fat percentage You can´t guess, you must test.   I hope these episodes contribute to reduce the weight you are carrying on, by supporting your health and guide your choices to be more conscious, grounded, and attuned with your health and life purposes.  Wishing more simplicity and ease in all that you do!   You can connect to this episode on iTunes, Spotify, or Stitcher by searching The Simplicity Sessions, or visiting www.jennpike.com/podcast. I wanted to put another series together for all of you, I know how much you have enjoyed the previous one directed at The Audacious Woman, and that is the reason why this new series is launching today. This time, it is about the Seven Most Common Areas of Imbalance in a Woman’s Body, those areas where there is a lot of confusion in regards to what we were historically being taught in terms of what we are doing to and with our bodies. The first area that I want to address is weight loss, and I have to say in the first place that I don’t even agree with that term!   During these seven episodes you will learn how to put on muscle and reconfigure your body composition, it is not about the number that the scale shows, but instead we should make our choices based on the composition of our body. I am also going to be giving you deeper information about your thyroid, estrogen, progesterone, androgens, DHEA and testosterone, aspects that could be contributing to conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome and Hirsutism (excess of hair growth). In this series, we will also dive deep into PMS and PMDD (Premenstrual dysphoric disorder). The whole purpose of this series is to bring you back to school, offering valuable information to promote a deeper connection between you and your body.   These are the main topics of the first episode of an amazing series:   I share my experience during my modelling years and how that opened my eyes in regards to body composition. The terrible effects of the diet culture. Your body composition impacts your brain, your ageing and hormones. The connection between exercise and your immune system. Back up and listen to your body! Nutrition and diet. Your macronutrients: Protein, fat, and fibre. Muscle growth is stimulated by exercise, protein, rest, and recovery. How much protein do you need to consume on a daily basis? Carbs are not the problem, it is most likely the kind of carbs you are choosing. Your thyroid health matters to your muscles. What happens during perimenopause and menopause? Lab test: Ask for a full thyroid panel.   You have to be patient and honest with yourself about the things that you are prepared to do and for those that you are not prepared to do yet, stop the cycle of “all or nothing”. Hoping today’s episode helps you start walking the path of recovering the precious connection with your body. Dr. Shyamala is a Clinically-trained Leadership & Relationship Coach and has spent the last two decades helping people master their emotional intelligence. Her mission is to help women build High-Performance Relationships in every area of their life. She is the founder of The EQ Code, a high-touch coaching program designed to help high performers transform the way they think, communicate, and lead.   Shyamala is also the founder of the Kiru Wellness Clinic, a mental health practice dedicated to the entire family system. She spent several years on the Board of Directors for the Ontario Association for Marriage & Family Therapy. As a speaker, Shyamala provides frequent talks and workshops on a local, national, and international scale. Shyamala is a media expert, having appeared on a national television show for nearly a decade and makes guest appearances on CTV, CP24 as well as frequent pieces of print media.   Today, Dr. Shymala and I have a deep conversation about women, the patterns of our childhoods that model our current decisions, our symptoms and their root causes, the different styles of communication, and how important is to take a look at our boundaries and relationships since these are the ones that are directly linked to the quality of our lives.   Here are the main topics of a great conversation: Shymala talks about her backstory. The raw reality of burnout. The moment when you realize that the tools that used to work for you are not sufficient anymore. Do you feel that you don’t have “permission” to renegotiate your boundaries and relationships? The quality of your life is determined by the quality of your relationships. The difference between a symptom and a root cause. The templates that we experienced in our families of origin, are the patterns that we will subconsciously try to replicate. Women tend to over-function and subsequently end up promoting under-functioning family members. You are responsible for your happiness. The four primary communication styles. The fifth style of communication: The Alternator. CASE: A frame that can help you to guide a difficult conversation (Context, Ask, Specify, ReEmbrace and let go). Relationships are systemic: if one part of the relationship changes the other parts will have to change. Who are you looking for permission from?   Hoping this conversation helps you to move in the direction of strengthening your skills in the emotional intelligence arena. These are guidelines for you to start showing up to your life and relationships, you deserve it! Hey Weight Loss Nation! Today is a 5 Minute Snack Day! I have a very healthy snack for you! It's Banana, Dark Chocolate Cookies! That's Right! Another delicious, healthy snack. Let's make them! BANANA DARK CHOCOLATE COOKIES Should Make About 8 Cookies Ingredients 1/2 cup coconut flour, sifted.  I used Bob Red Mill Organic Coconut – in most supermarkets. 1/2 cup mashed banana (about 2 medium ones) 1/4 cup almond butter (use whatever nut butter you want)* As I’ve said in prior episodes, I use Artisana Raw Organic Almond Butter. One of the least processed and healthiest almond butter. Go to http://www.artisanaorganics.com to purchase almond butter or you can find Artisana almond butter in your nearest Health Food Store, Whole Foods, Sprouts etc. 1/4 cup raw, unfiltered honey (Buy LOCAL Raw, Unfiltered Honey. That’s the best for you. If you live near Savannah, GA you wouldn’t want to buy Raw, Unfiltered Honey from Oregon, because the honey from Oregon contains local pollen & nutrients from that area. If you live in Oregon, check out Raw Oregon Honey at www.raworegonhoney.com If you live near Savannah, GA  you want raw, local honey that contains the local pollen & nutrients from your neighborhood. check out HL Franklin Honey at www.FranklinFoodsLLC.com 1.5 oz Dark Chocolate  - I use Taza “Wicked Dark” Chocolate bar. Taza has one of the least processed Dark Chocolate in the friggin world. With the “Wicked Dark,” containing 95% Dark Chocolate, SWEET is NO longer in the equation. We’re talking HEALTHY HERE! You’ll use ½ of the “Wicked Dark” Chocolate Bar for this recipe. Go to www.tazachocolate.com to purchase “Wicked Dark” Chocolate Bars. Instructions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line a cooking sheet with baking paper and set aside. In a mixing bowl, combine the coconut flour and banana and mix well. The batter should be very crumbly. In a microwave safe bowl or stovetop, melt the almond butter and pour into the dry mixture. Add the honey. Mix until a thick batter is formed. Break up the Dark Chocolate into small pieces & add to the batter. Form into balls and transfer "8" balls  to the lined cookie sheet. Press firmly into a flat, cookie shape and bake for 12-15 minutes. Stick a knife in the cookie to see if it's done. If the knife comes out dry....the cookies are done! If the knife is still wet, put it back into the oven for a minute or two. Remove and allow to sit for 10 minutes until they firm up slightly. These cookies can be kept at room temperature covered for up to 3 days. These are delicious refrigerated and can also be frozen too. NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION Serving Size  -   ONE Cookie Calories –  130 Fat – 4gms Carbs – 20gms Fiber – 4gms Protein – 3.5 gms Sugar – 8gms Primarily from the honey! So you’re talking about organic, natural sugar. NOT Processed Sugars. We’re talking Glucose & Fructose in honey. WANT MORE INFO ON WLN?
