Although this cdrama runs parallel to Hidden Love, it is a different story with a much darker theme surrounding it.In this deep dive we discuss general non spoiler thoughts about this drama, as well as spoiler thoughts up to episode 10. Weather History: On this day in 1938, temperatures reached 97°F in Onawa, tying Iowa's all-time October record. Other high temperatures included 96°F at Little Sioux and Sioux City. Short-Term Forecast: Current conditions are warm and dry, following the driest September on record. Upcoming temperatures expected to reach the upper 80s to low 90s, with cooler nights in the low to mid-40s. Recent Weather Events: Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida, causing significant rainfall and landslides in North Carolina. Iowa experienced dry, hot, and windy conditions, leading to fire bans in some counties. Temperature Trends: Daily high temperatures were 11 to 15 degrees above average; lows were about 4 to 5 degrees above average. The dry air led to significant temperature drops overnight. Long-Term Forecast: The latest Drought Monitor shows severe drought expanding in parts of Western Iowa. Six to ten-day and eight to fourteen-day outlooks indicate above-average temperatures across Iowa, with a gradient of higher probabilities in the west. Precipitation Outlook: Expected to be below average for both short-term and October forecasts. Specialty Crop Impacts: Dry weather is beneficial for root crop harvesting but can make digging difficult if the ground is too hard. Local Food Purchasing Assistance (LFPA) program received additional funding from USDA, aiding growers. Some growers view LFPA funding as a short-term lifeline for capital improvements rather than a permanent solution. Flower growers faced challenges earlier in the year due to flooding affecting crops like dahlias. Transcript summary provided by perplexity.ai

The Yard to host festival of live music, art and weed This past November, singer Julia Zivic, who works at The Yard in Beacon; Brianne McDowell, its general manager, and Jason Hughes, its owner, hosted First Frost, which featured music, ink (tattoos) and art-making in a communal hangout full of good cheer amid bonfire warmth. At the event, Noah Mandia mentioned to Zivic that his Beacon heavy metal band, Low Fiction, wanted to perform at The Yard. She passed the request to Hughes, and "it turns out Jason loves metal, which I hadn't known." That led to a brainstorming session, which led to Heavy Metal Blaze: A Night of Cannabis, Music and Art, scheduled for Jan. 27. "We're always trying to find ways to connect with the community," says Zivic. "Beacon lacks a great music venue, and there are many bands that have no space" to perform. Heavy Metal Blaze began as a concert but "we thought a lot of metalheads in Beacon classify themselves as 'stoner metal' and realized it would be fun to fuse the two - metal and cannabis," Zivic says. "This night is about bringing together the cannabis community, the heavy-metal community and the music community in general. We want to attract people who are curious; there's an art show, snacks, weed, a bonfire. We want to showcase how we can all come together." The alcohol-free festivities will begin at 4 p.m., rain or shine, when VIP ticket holders are welcome to collect a package that includes a joint, a THC-infused canned cocktail and a chillum glass pipe, "pre-packed to provide a couple of hits," Zivic says. The packages will be assembled by Flower Hour, a group of "weed curators interested in normalizing mindful consumption," she says. General admission begins at 5:30 p.m. Food and beverages will be offered for sale at indoor tents, and vintage Nintendo and Sega Genesis games will be available for free play. Throughout, Sean Donovan will demonstrate and create art and signs. At 6 p.m., Purple Lung, a "stonerdoom" metal band from Pennsylvania, will take the stage. It will be followed at 7 p.m. by Low Fiction - Mandia on guitar, Jack Kolodziejksi on vocals and guitar, Bryan Caprari on bass and John Scelzo on drums - and at 8 p.m. by Shadow Witch from Kingston. The Yard is located at 4 Hanna Lane in Beacon. General admission tickets are $35 and VIP tickets are $60 at bit.ly/hmb-2024. No one under age 21 will be admitted, and no smoking will be allowed indoors.

The problem is we grow gardens in Zone 9, and that means the temperature can drop or fluctuate by 60 degrees in just 24 hours. That is something our summer plants cannot handle! This week, I'm going to teach you exactly what you should be looking for and how to prepare your garden for frosts and freezes. Who doesn't love a freebie?! First day of November already and the first frost occurring a little bit later than usual in the northeast but just about in time across the Mid-Atlantic and southeastern states. Over the Great Lakes there were areas of snow on Tuesday and then accounted to traces up to as much as four inches mostly the heaviest snow to the east and southeast of Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. More importantly , that represents the cold air moving down out of Canada the first strong outbreak that we've seen this season. In stark contrast to the very warm weather last week, we're going to be chilling down for the next several days but generally dry for the weekend. The weather is not going to be a major problem this weekend. The major airline hubs except for Seattle where an series of strong north Pacific  lows will be starting to move in with strong winds and heavy rains Wednesday through Thursday in the Pacific NW. Check back on Thursday for a better look at the weekend

Summary   Iowa weather and frost potential Justin Glisan and Dan Fillius discuss the weather forecast for Iowa, with a freeze watch issued for northwestern Iowa. Row Crop farmers in northern Iowa may benefit from a killing freeze to kill off remaining green soybean leaves, but a frost of 32°F can also damage specialty crops. Freeze watch issued for northwest Iowa, with potential for frost damage to crops. Basil is particularly tender and can show damage at warmer temperatures, so covering or harvesting early is recommended. Sweet potatoes can take damage from frost, especially if the vines die and break down, so digging them up beforehand can help prevent damage. Dan Fillius explains how grading of produce, including sweet potatoes, has shifted towards smaller sizes due to changing consumer preferences. Unseasonably warm autumn weather in Iowa Unseasonally warm temperatures are expected in Iowa, with a slight chance of precipitation in the eastern part of the state. Des Moines area received little rain, with up to half an inch of rain in western Iowa. 1963: Unseasonably hot autumn weather in Iowa in 1963, with some stations setting or breaking temperature records. Growing winter vegetables in Iowa with tips for pest management Farmers are seeing faster growth in overwintering crops due to warm temperatures. Dan Fillius advises on timing for harvesting and replanting cool-season crops, and addresses pest management for aphids and voles. Dan Fillius discusses the challenges of growing sweet potatoes and squash, including damage from rodents. Fillius recommends using traps, nematodes, and other methods to control pest populations. Soil moisture, frost, and farming strategies Justin Glisan explains how dry soils freeze faster and deeper, with implications for spring thaw and infiltration of moisture. Dan Fillius asks questions and seeks more information on the topic, highlighting the importance of understanding dry soil conditions for farmers. Justin Glisan suggests covering soil with a tarp to retain moisture during winter, but Dan Fillius wonders if this prevents water recharge. Dan Fillius questions the effectiveness of using a tarp for recharge, given the dryness of the winter season

It is unprecedented to lose to major coaches on one staff, mid-season. First Frost, and now his right hand man. This tells me that interim Head Coach Mickey Joseph ain't playin' around. We take a look at the cumulative stats that contributed to Chinander's demise, and then look forward to the rest of 2022 and beyond. Including a discussion about a certain coach, whom if hired, might divide this fanbase even further...including the hosts of this podcast. Would be entertaining though. Lol.But before we get into the game and the future of Husker football, we take a nostalgic trip into the past as we talk with filmmaker Justin LePara, the director of Day by Day, a Husker documentary that debuted Part 1 in May of this year. Justin has plenty of stories to share, and hopefully we will also get some insight as to when the first part will be available to stream and/or download. Then, we will focus on Part 2, in which former head coach Scott Frost plays an integral role. Tell me what your challenges are and how you think a coach or mentor could help you.   I'M READING: In fiction, Just finished Sparks by Maren Anderson and loved it. Find me at: Patreon.com/valerieihsan.    Resources: kriswrites.com Main topic: Perfectionism     Perfectionism   I want to talk about perfectionism. What it is, how it shows up, and what to do about it.   WHAT It has to be perfect before I can release it out into the world. Why? People will think I'm dumb if it's bad. People will think I'm a loser if it's bad. I'll be embarrassed/horrified/ashamed/mortified. People won't take me seriously is if not professional. I'll let myself down if it's not the best I can do. [Xxx] won't be proud of me if it's not any good.   HOW (Stuck in cement.) Rewriting it for ten years and never publishing it or moving on to another project. (Never start.) Find excuses why you can't work on your book. (Kids, partner, no support, no resources, mental illness, chronic health problems, job, too much to do...) I didn't want to be bad at something.  Writing was what I was good at. I didn't want to find out differently. Logically, I knew that books needed to be edited and reworked after writing them, but somehow I didn't *actually* believe that. Somewhere deep inside I thought that if I was good enough (insert negative belief structure to read: good enough person), it would be practically perfect and people would exclaim, "What?! That's your rough draft?! No way!!" Not only did I not want to be bad at something, or more accurately, *look* bad, I didn't want to know that I was sub-par. Not good enough. As a human. WHAT TO DO Know that your first book will not be your best work ever. It might be the best you can do *right now*, but you will grow as a writer. Your skills will improve. Here's how I battled perfectionism one time: I was just about to publish my first novel. It was out at the ARC readers (which is past the point where you want changes to your manuscript--unless it's dire) and one reader (another author) got back to me about what she perceived as a lack of motivation for some of the characters. As if, I--the author--just wanted the characters to do something and so they did it. I was so done with working on this book. It had taken me a couple of years to finish and I was proud of it. When she gave me the feedback, I said, "Thank you. I can maybe see how you'd think that, but here's the thing. It's my first book. I know it's not going to be the best thing I ever write. It's good enough for a first book. I'll make more. But it's time to let this one go. I'm not going to get to be any better of a writer by re-working the one over and over for another six months to a year. But I will improve by writing another whole one." And on another note: RESOURCE:  The Pursuit of Perfection: And How It Harms Writers   by Kristine Kathryn Rusch    I've heard people say that if you aren't doing it, you don't want it bad enough. I'd always get so mad hearing that. I did, too, want it! I just had all this other stuff in the way--what I thought were legit reasons. But, really, what they were was not excuses, it was perfectionism. Perfectionism is self-doubt. AND, I've discovered, a crazy mutant version of the inner-editor. So one thing that helped with that was Nanowrimo. I learned two things the first year I did it (and finished): 1) I worked faster than the inner-editor could keep up. When I'd hear him running up behind me, I stuff earplugs in and say, "It's not about quality, it's about quantity. I just need the words right now." And, 2) I *did* have time to write. With a family, raising two elementary school-aged children, and homeschooling my 2nd grader. None of my excuses worked. I wrote a whole novel in one month. (Maybe you'll learn something different from Nanowrimo.) As far as the self-doubt goes, I just try to remember that everyone (even Lee Child and Steven King and Sandra Brown and Clive Cussler and Rachael Herron and Joanna Penn--read: all authors) has self-doubt. It's part of the writing process. It's part of being an author. When I remember that, I can default into self-care. I have several in my toolbox: Affirmations Meditation Journaling Artist Dates Reading Writing Connecting with other authors Surrounding myself with people who think I'm awesome Read books and listen to podcasts to get inspired, change my mindset, and learn new things. (If I doubt my ability to do something, I'll study it until I'm confident I can do it.) Do something that inspires me   Last thoughts about perfectionism--the kind that keeps you from writing or putting your work out into the world: Go to Goodreads or Amazon and read the reviews of famous authors. Lots of people hated The Great Gatsby; Eat, Pray, Love; The Lovely Bones; and The Davinci Code. If your reviews are coming in and some of them are 1 stars, you're a real writer, and in the company of some of the greats.  The biggest epiphany I ever had as a writer was: My husband is not my target audience. I was never going to write a book that he loved, and that was okay, because he didn't read the kind of books I wrote. I was a much happier writer after that.   How does perfectionism show up in your writing life? How can you deal with it and push through to success?

This week's Stormdar Weather School explains how it can snow when the temp is as warm as 40°F. A very cool "this week in weather history", and as always, the Weather Word of the Week!

Fall is here! October is here! Where did the time go? While I love this time of year, it is time to say goodbye to my plants and old, tired garden beds. Like summer hitting early before Memorial Day this year, winter seems to be bearing down on Minnesota and Wisconsin (some areas of Minnesota got a snow already)! In this podcast, I am going to talk about how the First Frost was the End of My 2018 Garden Season. For more about the first frost, pictures and a video, check out the blog post on Small Scale Life titled "First Frost: End of My 2018 Garden Season." C.R.Y.O. Philadelphia provides therapeutic recovery services for athletes and active adults, as well as health and wellness benefits to the general public. Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) is a revolutionary method of cold therapy involving 3 minutes of exposure to subzero temperatures ranging from -200 F to -250͖ F. During the three minute treatment, the exposure to subzero temperatures causes the skin’s cold receptors to stimulate the nervous system. The body perceives this sudden and extreme cold to be a life-threatening situation and activates a chain of powerful survival mechanisms involving the body’s most crucial systems. Vasoconstriction occurs and blood is redirected from the peripheral tissue to preserve the vital organs and maintain core temperature. When one re-enters a room-temperature environment, the blood immediately rushes back to the skin, blood circulation is naturally stimulated, and oxygenated blood is delivered back to the damaged tissue. As a result, any blood with inflammatory properties gets treated and relief from pain and discomfort begins. This was absolutly amazing. I wasn't sore from my back to back workouts. Cryo also improved my mood. I can't wait to go back! .

Dr Ken Nordberg wrote a book in the 1980s called Whitetail Hunter's Almanac that is considered by many as the deer hunting bible. Today there are 9 (soon to be 10) editions of the Almanac, each sharing some fascinating insight into the world of the whitetail deer and how to hunt them. Dr Nordberg, otherwise known as "Doc", used to spend over 4000 hours a year studying the whitetail. Interestingly enough, Dr. Nordberg's deer hunting strategy has changed over the years as he recognized new patterns in whitetail behavior relative to hunting. This show is for the beginner and the advanced hunter.
