His ‘Magic Vision App' campaign for Band-Aid won the Gold Lion at Cannes. This week on Total Movie Recall, Steve and Ryan discover that there's actually an antidote to getting punched really, really hard. The cultural divide proves too much for Ryan in this wild, fantastic, hallucinatory Kung Fu epic of many names. The story is incomprehensible, the fights are nonsensical, but Steve still finds it defensible, while Ryan finds the editing reprehensible. There's no reason for this rhyme. Kung Fu Cult Master (1993) d. Jing Wong, Sammo Kam-Bo Hung Starring: Jet Li Man Cheung Chingmy Yau Set during the Yuen Dynasty, many sects compete for possession of the two golden swords which contain the secret to dominance of the world of martial arts. The second is the Ming Sect, otherwise known as the Fire Sect or Evil Sect, led by branch leaders Queen of Purple Dragon, King of White Eagle, King of Gold Lion and King of Green Bat. A student of Wu Tang, befriends Gold Lion and marries the daughter of White Eagle. He is killed for the secret of the location of the missing sword. In 1982, John Cassavetes appeared in a schlocky Canadian-made horror movie called The Incubus, and a not so small portion of The Incubus was shot in Guelph. Just in time for Halloween, we’re going to talk about that time in the 80s where an Academy Award nominated actor and director came to the Royal City to hunt monsters in an unforgettably forgettable horror movie. Released in 1982, The Incubus focuses on a small New England town plagued by a series of rapes and murders. Cassavetes plays Sam Cordell, a doctor who’s just moved to town with his estranged daughter and gets wrapped up in the police investigation of the attacks. As the saying goes, “It’s not Shakespeare,” but it’s hard to deny that there’s something about the film. For Guelphites, The Incubus is a time capsule for vintage Guelph circa 1980 with the old Odeon movie theatre, Macdonell Street, the Homewood, and the Gilnockie House on Queen Street all being prime locations. For cinephiles, there's the curiosity of Cassavetes, long considered the godfather of the modern American independent film movement, who won the Gold Lion at the Venice Film Festival for his acclaimed film Gloria the same year he made The Incubus. This is where Brett Wright comes in. Wright wrote an article for Split Tooth Media about Cassavetes and why he found some creative solace in shooting The Incubus. This week on the podcast, Wright will give us some insight into the artistic value of The Incubus for Cassavetes, why this supposedly forgettable horror movie from the early 80s hasn’t been forgotten, and why modern audiences and horror fans have been giving it a second look. So let's get into this forgotten slice of Guelph pop culture history on this week's Guelph Politicast! You can read Wright’s piece “An Artist’s Nightmare: John Cassavetes, Horror Films, and ‘The Incubus’” on Split Tooth Media. Guelph Museums has photos from the Guelph set of The Incubus in their collection, and you can watch The Incubus for yourself, for free, on the ad-supported streaming site Tubi TV. The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. Find more episodes of the Politicast here, or download them on your favourite podcast app at Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Google Play, and Spotify. Our guest this week is Pentagram partner and co-founder of non-profit public service, Do The Green Thing, Naresh Ramchandani. As Pentagram’s first advertising and communications partner, he talks to us about how creativity can make a cause visible, and why he counts idealism and pragmatism as two essential skills for creatives. Armed with a portfolio of witty, sharp and award-winning campaigns, Naresh arrived at Pentagram following an already successful career in advertising that saw him co-found agency Karmarama and non-profit public service Do The Green Thing – as well as writing his own column for The Guardian. Joining Pentagram in 2010 as the design consultancy’s first advertising and communications partner, the move seemed to usher in a couple of other firsts, with Naresh working on everything from YouTube’s debut ad campaign to creating Pentagram’s first-ever music video. Growing up with initial hopes of becoming a record producer, a love of music turned to a love of words, and he soon enrolled on the English and American Literature course at Manchester University. Later inspired by John Webster’s legendary ‘Martians’ ads for Smash, it wasn’t long before he landed a job as a copywriter for the London-based advertising agency HHCL, winning a Gold Lion for his campaign for Maxell Cassette tapes – and the title of best advertisement in the world – in his second year at the company. ...
