In 1854, on the cusp of the Great Rebellion, an Islamic cleric and an Evangelical missionary went to war to decide which the one true God was. The Agra Debate would set off an incredible series of events, which led in direct succession to Zakir Naik setting up the Islamic Research Foundation.----more----Read full article here: https://theprint.in/opinion/zakir-naik-empire-of-hate-toxic-religious-identity-politics/2309571/

The Man of Lawlessness, the Great Rebellion, and the End of the World (2 Thessalonians 2:1–12) - Dr. Bill Cook
"It Is Finished" is our sermon series through Hebrews. "A Great Rebellion" is the seventh sermon in this series. The book of Hebrews contains many warnings for those in the church to not fall away from the faith. Does this mean we can lose our salvation? No. Rather, it is a healthy call for us to examine ourselves to make sure we're not living with evil and rebellious hearts, pretending to be saved when we're actually under God's wrath. If you made the decision to trust Jesus, or God challenged you in a specific way during this sermon, please let us know by contacting us at hello@newheightswv.com, so that we can celebrate and pray with you!

With the unexpected death of Ptolemy IV and the Great Rebellion in full swing, Antiochus III and Philip V form a secret pact to destroy the Ptolemaic Kingdom, partitioning the territories for themselves. Their invasions of Coele Syria and Asia Minor sent shockwaves across the eastern Mediterranean, leading several Greek states to request military assistance from the one power that could prevent their subjugation: the Roman Republic. Join us for our Erev Shabbat service we will be going through the weekly teachings from Monte Judah. The portion of Korah tells the story of the Great Rebellion. It tells how Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, along with 250 princes of Israel, rose up against the leadership of Moses and Aaron. Moses tested the men by asking them to bring their fire pans before the Tent of Meeting. The LORD did not accept the offering of the three instigators and the 250 princes. Subsequently, the LORD opened the earth and swallowed Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, their families and belongings, and then consumed the 250 princes by fire. On the following day, the entire congregation of Israel rose up against Moses. Consequently, the LORD sent a plague through all the children of Israel. Aaron quickly put incense in his fire pan and ran into the midst of the congregation, thus checking the plague before it would consume the whole congregation, but not before 14,700 children of Israel perished. This portion concludes by reaffirming the role of Aaron as the high priest and the Levites as stewards in the Tabernacle. Is there really 7 Reasons America is NOT the New World Order The New World Order is an international conspiracy that aims to establish a world government. The term comes from a novel by John Wilkes Booth, who referred to it as "The Great Rebellion." The roots of the New World Order can be traced back to the 18th century and the emergence of the Illuminati. The Illuminati was an occult society founded on May 1, 1776, with the intent of creating a new world order. Similar groups have popped up over time and they continue to this day. The Illuminati isn't the only secretive society that has inspired the New World Order. Groups like the Freemasons, Skull and Bones, and the Knights Templar have also been accused of working toward the same goal. Many of these organizations are also thought to be part of the New World Order. Is The New World Order is an international conspiracy The New World Order refers to an international conspiracy that aims to establish a world government. The roots of the New World Order can be traced back to the 18th century and the emergence of the Illuminati. The Illuminati was an occult society founded on May 1, 1776, with the intent of creating a new world order; similar groups have popped up over time and continue to this day. The Illuminati isn't the only secretive society that has inspired the New World Order: other groups like Freemasons, Skull and Bones, and Knights Templar are also thought to be part of it. Many believe these organizations are also part of the New World Order. The Illuminati The Illuminati is an international secret society that aims to establish a world government. The term comes from a novel by John Wilkes Booth, who referred to it as "The Great Rebellion." The roots of the New World Order can be traced back to the 18th century and the emergence of the Illuminati. The Freemasons Freemasons are one of the oldest and most powerful secret societies. They are a fraternity that aims to spread the ideals of Freemasonry. Founded in 15th century Scotland, the Freemasons have been influential throughout history. The group is also thought to be part of the New World Order because they are an older society with ties to many other societies who are also thought to be working toward world domination. A significant number of presidents and world leaders were Masons: George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, James Monroe, Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, William McKinley, Teddy Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Lyndon B. Johnson, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan. Many members of Congress today are also Masons. That includes Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan. The Skull and Bones Skull and Bones is an American society at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut. It is the oldest senior class society of Yale College, with a membership of about 2,000 men. The society's alumni organization, the Russell Trust Association, owns and manages the Skull and Bones building and endowment. Skull and Bones has been surrounded by many conspiracy theories throughout its long history. The most well-known one is that it was created as a front for an Illuminati group who aims to create a so-called "New World Order." However many conspiracies are unfounded. For example, there is no evidence that the society is an Illuminati front or that they plan to take over the world. There are also no ties between Skull and Bones and organized crime or that they maintain any control of Yale's academic life. The Knights Templar One of the more mysterious groups connected to the New World Order is the Knights Templar. The Templars were a medieval Catholic order with a military and monastic focus. They're best known for their role in the Crusades, but they also had a hand in establishing banking and trade routes. The Templars' most famous moment came with their involvement in the persecution of King Jacques II of France, who was later absolved by Pope Clement V. After Jacques II's death, Philip IV arrested all members of the order in Europe and seized its assets. Although it was initially founded to protect Christians on pilgrimage to Jerusalem, many began to view the Knights Templar as a corrupt institution that traded in violence and extortion along with pagan practices like witchcraft. The Knights Templar are thought to be responsible for hiding some kind of treasure, which some believe might be buried beneath Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland. Some even go so far as to say that this treasure includes Jesus' bones and his holy bloodline, which would make it worth trillions of dollars today. Some people think that those involved in the New World Order are trying to take control of this "Holy Grail," but there's no evidence linking them together outside speculation. Fact or fiction Conspiracy theories One of the most common conspiracy theories is that the New World Order is an organization that seeks to control and manipulate world affairs, including the economy, politics, and social issues. The theory says that this organization has been slowly trying to take over the world since it was first conceived in 1776. Many people believe that the New World Order has already achieved its goal. Others say they've come close to achieving their goals but have not completed them yet. *Theories about the New World Order are very diverse. Some people say it's a group of powerful political families who rule together; others believe it's a committee of wealthy individuals who mastermind every major event on Earth. There are also people who believe it's a secret society working for centuries to create a one-world government system.* However, there is no consensus on what exactly the goals of this group or society are. This leads many theorists to disagree and fight with each other about what should be done next, if anything at all. Summing up with God's word America America is not the New World Order. America is one of many countries that were once part of the New World Order. The United States has never been a member of the New World Order and there's no reason to believe that it ever will be. The Bible does not use the phrase “one-world government” or “one-world currency” in referring to the end times. It does, however, provide ample evidence to enable us to draw the conclusion that both will exist under the rule of the Antichrist in the last few days. In an off-the-cuff remark “Now is a time when things are shifting,” Biden told a crowd of CEOs at the Business Roundtable's quarterly meeting on March 21. “There's going to be a new world order out there, and we've got to lead it. And we've got to unite the rest of the free world in doing it.” Is this opening the door for the anti-Christ? No this is not a Conspiracy Theory. Just something to ponder. In his apocalyptic vision in the Book of Revelation, the Apostle John sees the “beast,” also called the Antichrist, rising out of the sea having seven heads and ten horns (Revelation 13:1). Combining this vision with Daniel's similar one (Daniel 7:16-24), we can conclude that some sort of world system will be inaugurated by the beast, the most powerful “horn,” who will defeat the other nine and will begin to wage war against Christians. The ten-nation confederacy is also seen in Daniel's image of the statue in Daniel 2:41-42, where he pictures the final world government consisting of ten entities represented by the ten toes of the statue. Whoever the ten are and however they come to power, Scripture is clear that the beast will either destroy them or reduce their power to nothing more than figureheads. In the end, they will do his bidding. John goes on to describe the ruler of this vast empire as having power and great authority, given to him by Satan himself (Revelation 13:2), being followed by and receiving worship from “all the world” (13:3-4), and having authority over “every tribe, people, language and nation” (13:7). From this description, it is logical to assume that this person is the leader of a one-world government that is recognized as sovereign over all other governments. It's hard to imagine how such diverse systems of government as are in power today would willingly subjugate themselves to a single ruler, and there are many theories on the subject. A logical conclusion is that the disasters and plagues described in Revelation as the seal and trumpet judgments (chapters 6-11) will be so devastating and create such a monumental global crisis that people will embrace anything and anyone who promises to give them relief. Once entrenched in power, the beast (Antichrist) and the power behind him (Satan) will move to establish absolute control over all peoples of the earth to accomplish their true end, the worship Satan has been seeking ever since being thrown out of heaven (Isaiah 14:12-14). One way they will accomplish this is by controlling all commerce, and this is where the idea of a one-world currency comes in. Revelation 13:16-17 describes some sort of satanic mark that will be required in order to buy and sell. This means anyone who refuses the mark will be unable to buy food, clothing, or other necessities of life. No doubt the vast majority of people in the world will succumb to the mark simply to survive. Again, verse 16 makes it clear that this will be a universal system of control where everyone, rich and poor, great and small, will bear the mark on their hand or forehead. There is a great deal of speculation as to how exactly this mark will be affixed, but the technologies that are available right now could accomplish it very easily. Those who are left behind after the Rapture of the Church will be faced with an excruciating choice—accept the mark of the beast in order to survive or face starvation and horrific persecution by the Antichrist and his followers. But those who come to Christ during this time, those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life (Revelation 13:8), will choose to endure, even to martyrdom.
Andres Traslavia has interviewed more than 2,000 executives as a longtime recruiter and the head of executive search and talent acquisition at Whole Foods Market. He has a rare view into talent trends spanning the past 15 years—and insights into what he calls “the Great Rebellion,” or the mass resignations employers are seeing in 2021 and 2022. Dangling shiny salaries and massive compensation packages is not enough to attract talent anymore. In this episode, Andres shares how employers can retain talent and maps out three things he is looking for when he interviews an executive. Listen for his cheat sheet for anyone going through the interview process. Andres grew up in Bogota, Columbia. He came to the United States and fell for the idea that success was about having material things. In the midst of this lonely realization, he walked into Whole Foods and fell in love with how happy the workers were. Andres knew he had to work for this “Disney World for foodies.” So he said, “Why Not Now?” and moved to Austin with his wife. Andres talks about his dedication to finding a job that brings happiness and connection with a higher purpose. He expresses how meaning will make or break a job. He advises people to do the research and find an environment they can connect with rather than rushing a job switch as a Band-Aid for mental health. This episode is full of tangible tips for nailing an interview with a company that is a good match for you, as well as advice for creating a caring environment as a leader so that people will want to work for your company. Author of the Chapparal Hearts series, Kathleen Denly talks about her series, the books, and the wonderful stories of San Diego during the Gold Rush era. Don't miss my review of Harmony on the Horizon. I hadn't read it as of this interview, but I did after it was over and wow.... Just wow. Note: Links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. A Beautiful Historical Romance Set in an Unusual Part of California After finding Kathleen Denly's website a few years ago, I knew I wanted to read her books, but I had no idea what I was in for. This series features an underrepresented part of California--San Diego county. Most historical California fiction features the areas north of Monterey, but not Kathleen's. And in this book, you find so much that is relative to today's issues, just dressed in the world of yesteryear. Kathleen discusses what parts of her books she personally relates most to and she even gives us a bit about what's coming up next! Great news. It's more books. Harmony on the Horizon by Kathleen Denly Her calling to change the world may be his downfall. So, when Everett Thompson, the handsomest member of the School Board, reveals his interest in her, it's a dream come true. Until her passionate ideals drive a wedge between them. After two decades of hard work, Everett Thompson is on the verge of having everything he's dreamed of. Even the beautiful new teacher has agreed to his courtship. Then two investments go south and a blackmailer threatens everything Everett has and dreams of. As Everett scrambles to shore up the crumbling pieces of his life, Margaret unwittingly sets off a scandal that divides the small community and threatens her position as teacher. It is not irrelevant to remind our readers that a mathematical point exists within ourselves. Unquestionably such a point is never found either in the past or in the future. Whosoever wants to discover that mysterious point must look for it here and now, within oneself at this exact moment, not a second earlier, not a second later. The two horizontal and vertical lines of the Holy Cross intersect at this point. Thus, we find ourselves from moment to moment before two paths: the Horizontal and the Vertical. It is evident that the Vertical is different; it is the path of intelligent rebels, of revolutionaries. It is apparent that the Horizontal path is too base; my buddy and every body travel it, by those who are juvenile and those who are senile. When one remembers oneself and works upon oneself, when one does not become identified with all the problems and sorrows of life, it is a fact that one is traveling along the Vertical path. Certainly, it is never an easy task to eliminate negative emotions, to lose all identification with our trend of life, with all types of problems, with business, debts, loan payments, mortgages, telephone, water and power payments, etc. The unemployed ones, those who have lost their position or job for one reason or another, evidently suffer because of lack of money and for them to forget their situation and not worry or identify themselves with their own problem becomes tremendously difficult. Those who suffer and those who cry, those who have been victims of some betrayal or injustice, victims of ingratitude, calumny, fraud, really do forget themselves; they forget their Inner Being; they identify themselves totally with their moral tragedy. The work on oneself is the fundamental characteristic of the Vertical path. Nobody treads upon the path of the Great Rebellion if he never works on himself. The work to which we are referring is of a psychological nature. This work deals with a certain transformation of the moment in which we find ourselves. We need to learn to live from moment to moment. For example, a person who is desperate about some sentimental, economical or political problems has obviously forgotten his Inner Self. If such a person would stop for a moment, observe the situation, try to remember his Inner Self and then try to understand the reason for this attitude… If he would reflect a little and think that everything passes away, that life is fleeting, illusory, and that death reduces all the vanities of the world to ashes… If he would understand that his problem in reality is nothing more than a worthless flame and soon dies, he would suddenly see with great surprise that everything has changed. It is possible to transform mechanical reactions through logical confrontation and the Intimate Auto-Reflection of the Being. It is evident that people react mechanically when faced with the diverse circumstances of life. Wretched people, they usually become the victims. When flattered, they smile, when humiliated, they suffer. They insult if insulted, they hurt if they are hurt; they are never free; their fellowmen have the power to drive them from happiness to sadness, from hope to despair. Each of these persons traveling along the Horizontal path is similar to a musical instrument on which each of his fellowmen can play the tune he wishes to. Whosoever learns how to transform mechanical reactions is in fact entering onto the Vertical path. This represents a fundamental change in the “Level of Being,” an extraordinary result of the “Psychological Rebellion.” Samael Aun Weor
On The Literary Life Podcast this week, Angelina, Cindy and Thomas are continuing their series on Jane Austen's Mansfield Park. This is the third episode in the series. They open their discussion talking about the virtue of temperance and how Fanny Price embodies temperance. In looking at the plot and the reaction of various characters to Sir Thomas' return, they bring out more of Fanny's virtues in contrast to the vices of other players in this section. Other themes highlighted in this section are the harp as a symbol of harmony, the problem of self-focus, the qualities of nature, and the Cinderella story parallels Austen is playing with. Commonplace Quotes: He had a head to contrive, a tongue to persuade, and a hand to execute any mischief. Edward Hyde Here, again, I would urge that appreciation is not a voluntary offering, but a debt we owe, and a debt we must acquire the means to pay by patient and humble study. In this, as in all the labours of the conscience seeking for instruction, we are enriched by our efforts; but self-culture should not be our object. Let us approach Art with the modest intention to pay a debt that we owe in learning to appreciate. So shall we escape the irritating ways of the connoisseur! Charlotte Mason The temperate man is so well-ordered that he does not feel the temptations of passion or desire. There is a difficulty about temperance, too, since it is a virtue that consists chiefly of not doing things. The liveliness of action and imagery must occur chiefly among its opponents, and we know what is liable to happen in this situation, even when there is no doubt about where our moral sympathy should lie. We have seen it in many works of fiction. But Guyon remains a colorless hero, and there is neither a heroic trial nor a radiant climax to his quest. Graham Hough To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time by Robert Herrick Gather ye rose-buds while ye may, Old Time is still a-flying; And this same flower that smiles today Tomorrow will be dying. The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun, The higher he's a-getting, The sooner will his race be run, And nearer he's to setting. That age is best which is the first, When youth and blood are warmer; But being spent, the worse, and worst Times still succeed the former. Then be not coy, but use your time, And while ye may, go marry; For having lost but once your prime, You may forever tarry. The Bible tells us that: 1) Great Rebellion and 2) the Revelation of the Antichrist must happen before the Rapture of the saints. Bible Study Time: 2Th. 2:1-4: 'Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by a spirit or a spoken word, or a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. Rum riots and rebellions on two different sides of the planet, both in the 19th century, capture our attention this week. First up is the Rum Rebellion of 1808, the rebellion formerly known as “The Great Rebellion.” The second was in 1855 and is known as both the Portland Rum Riot and the Maine Law Riot. These were two battles involving the same spirit but fought for vastly different reasons. The motivation behind these episodes was simply the host's foray into rabbit holes around booze riots, as there were so many more than she originally knew, and only recently learned about. The Man of Lawlessness, a Great Rebellion, and the End of the World (2 Thessalonians 2:6–12) - Dr. Bill Cook
In Psalm 2 we see a clash of two worlds. The creature rebels against the Creator. The end will come with God's rule and reign over all nations. But where will you be? Will you take refuge in him?
The Indian Rebellion of 1857 began as a mutiny of sepoys of the East India Company's army on 10 May 1857, in the town of Meerut, and soon escalated into other mutinies and civilian rebellions largely in the upper Gangetic plain and central India, with the major hostilities confined to present-day Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, northern Madhya Pradesh, and the Delhi region. The rebellion posed a considerable threat to Company power in that region, and was contained only with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858. The rebellion is also known as the India's First War of Independence, the Great Rebellion, the Indian Mutiny, the Revolt of 1857, the Uprising of 1857, the Sepoy Rebellion, and the Sepoy Mutiny. The Mutiny was a result of various grievances. However the flashpoint was reached when the soldiers were asked to bite off the paper cartridges for their rifles which were greased with animal fat namely beef and pork. This was, and is, against the religious beliefs of Hindus and Muslims. Other regions of Company-controlled India – such as Bengal, the Bombay Presidency, and the Madras Presidency remained largely calm.In Punjab, the Sikh princes backed the Company by providing soldiers and support. The large princely states of Hyderabad, Mysore, Travancore, and Kashmir, as well as the smaller ones of Rajputana, did not join the rebellion. In some regions, such as Oudh, the rebellion took on the attributes of a patriotic revolt against European presence. Maratha leaders, such as the Lakshmibai, the Rani of Jhansi, became folk heroes in the nationalist movement in India half a century later; however, they themselves "generated no coherent ideology" for a new order.qaThe rebellion led to the dissolution of the East India Company in 1858. It also led the British to reorganize the army, the financial system and the administration in India. India was thereafter directly governed by the crown as the new British Raj.The podcast is under an hour, brief but informative and the history hit you are looking for. Please review! Mike Asks, When is this Great Rebellion Going to Break Forth?
The Revolt of 1857 is also known by other names such as The Sepoy Mutiny, The Indian Mutiny, The Great Rebellion, The Indian Insurrection, India's First War of Independence. Political Causes: Doctrine of Lapse Cancelling of Nana Sahib's pension (Bajirao II) Not letting Rani Lakshmi Bhai rule Jhansi Abolish the Mughal Emperor title after the death of Bahadur Shah II Economical Causes: India was turned into a colonial economy to serve the British capitalist interests High taxes, eviction of people, discriminatory practices, and destruction of traditional handicrafts Social and Religious Causes: Sati, infanticide, re-marriage of widows were considered to be interference by the Indians The work of the Christian missionaries and the introduction of English education The change of the Hindu law of property to accommodate conversion to Christianity Military Causes: The Indian soldiers were considered inferior The high ranks in the army were exclusively reserved for English men Sending Indian soldiers overseas Immediate Cause: The introduction of the Enfield rifle and the greased cartridge Timeline: On 29th March 1857, a sepoy called Mangal Pandey killed his superior English officers during a parade in Barrackpore, Bengal. It spread to Berhampore on 24th April 1857 where the cavalrymen refused to accept the greased cartridges. On 10th May 1857, Mutineers killed their superiors in Meerut and started marching towards Delhi. On 12th May, Bahadur Shah was proclaimed the Emperor of India. He was 81. But the real command was in the hands of Bakht Khan who led the troops in Bareilly and moved them to Delhi. Nana Sahib led the troops in Kanpur. He proclaimed himself to be the Peshwa and governor of the region. It was Tantya Tope who did most of the fighting there. Hazrat Mahal, the Begum of Awadh led the revolt in Lucknow. She proclaimed her song Birjis Qadr as the Nawab of Awadh. It is in Lucknow where Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence (the British resident) was killed. Rani Laxmi Bai was defeated in Jhansi, but she captured Gwalior with the help of Tantya Tope. In Bareilly, Khan Bahadur Khan Rohilla led the revolt and proclaimed himself as the Nawab. Banaras, Allahabad, Nasirabad, Indore, Aligarh and Kota where the other centres of the battle were the mutineers killed their superiors, not even sparing women or children, burned the land records, plundered the treasury. Bahadur Shah II proved to be a weak leader and the Britishers were able to suppress the revolt soon enough. He was arrested and deported to Rangoon where he died in 1862. They recaptured Delhi on 20th September 1857 under the leadership of John Nicholson. General Havelock defeated the rebels in Kanpur. After his defeat, Nana Sahib refused to surrender and escaped to Nepal. Hugh Henry Rose suppressed the revolt in Jhansi and Rani Laxmi Bai died on the battlefield. Banaras, Bareilly, and Gwalior were recaptured by the Britishers. Why did the revolt fail? It was a highly localised revolt mainly restricted to North India. It was poorly organised and the leaders lacked coordination. Scindia of Gwalior, the Nizam of Hyderabad, the Holkar of Indore, the Nawab of Bhopal, the Raja of Jodhpur, the Rulers of Kashmir, Patiala, and Sindh, and the Rana of Nepal actively support the British during the revolt. The British had way better and advanced resources and also proven generals leading their troops. There was no common cause for the rebels, they had different goals. Impact of the Revolt: The Queen's Proclamation of November 1858 announced the policy of the British Government to be followed in India. It abolished territorial extension, the native rulers were assured of their title, land and rights, and honour if they cooperated with the British. The ruler's right to adopt a child in the case of the absence of a natural heir was accepted. The policy of divide and rule was actively pursued to keep the Hindus and Muslims separated leading to the gro

In today's episode we explore the implications of The Fall and see how this fall has resulted in our personal rebellion against the Creator of the Universe. In considering the garden we can see the perfect place God wants us to have and what we will realize when we are with Him in heaven. This perfect Garden of God was the setting for The Great Rebellion. Join with us as we explore The Fall of man. We learn about God, we learn about the devil and we learn about ourselves.

The 1887 Civil War Monument on the Common says 385 soldiers served for Brattleboro and 31 died. After months of research, BAMS students and the historical society have identified 427 Civil War soldiers and sailors born here, living here, or substituting for those drafted from here. 55 died as a result of serving during the war. We believe our list, while more comprehensive, should also be considered incomplete. Inconsistent recruitment practices during the “Great Rebellion” led to inaccurate assignment of some recruits to particular towns. This is the story... *9-6+3
The Opus is getting lost in the supermarket for its sixth season. The Clash were at a crossroads in 1979. The first wave of punk rock ended a year prior when the Sex Pistols called it quits, leaving the movement to explore new avenues, from New Wave to hardcore, and the band to wonder, What are we gonna do now? The answer was London Calling. As Margaret Thatcher continued to remake Britain by looking into the past, so did The Clash, and the English rockers opened up all the rock 'n' roll doors their fellow punk colleagues had slammed over the last decade. They brushed up on their history, they let their sound travel overseas, they started writing narratives. By doing so, they defied any kind of label for themselves, starting a rebellion in the process, and one that The Opus plans to follow. In the first episode of our London Calling series, host Andy Bothwell is joined by Lee "Scratch" Perry, Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace, L7’s Donita Sparks, writer Dan Reilly (Rolling Stone/Spin/Entertainment Weekly), and filmmaker Joseph Patel (Vice/MTV Docs). Together, they discuss how London Calling didn't need to be punk to prove how punk it was, how it didn't need to be a giant arena record to prove how much it rocked, and how it managed to introduce all kinds of culture with zero pretension. So, hop in their brand new Cadillac and listen now. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of London Calling, revisit a selection of The Clash’s best tracks via all major streaming services, and enter to win both the 40th anniversary London Calling Scrapbook and Super Bundle.

Last week OpenAI announced its latest breakthrough. GPT-2 is a language model that can write essays to a prompt, answer questions, and summarize longer works. For example (bold prompt is human-written, all other text is the machine-generated response): Prompt: For today’s homework assignment, please describe the reasons for the US Civil War. It is easy to identify why the Civil War happened, because so many people and so many books and so much television and films tell us that it was the cause, that it has something to do with race or economics or religion. There is much agreement that it was essentially a war of slavery on behalf of capitalism, about a century of slavery. But that’s not what most people think of when they think of the Civil War. Many people think of the war as about states rights. You’re not wrong about that, but it’s kind of misleading to say that the Civil War was a conflict between states’ rights and federalism. So let’s try again. What’s the idea that has inspired so many people to go onto the battlefields of Gettysburg and Antietam and Gettysberg and Petersburg and Fredericksburg? The American idea of the republic–a notion of limited government–is a great part of the history. In 1791, Thomas Jefferson said “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” The “founding fathers” were basically religious men who were not very concerned with states’ rights. The Civil War occurred in reaction to the idea that the federal government was taking far too much power away from the states, that they weren’t sovereign. Jefferson himself, as you well know, is an author of the Declaration of Independence who had some really crazy ideas about, well, you know, secession for a variety of reasons. The War Between the States (later the Great Rebellion) was a radical re-imagining of the American idea and not surprisingly, Jefferson’s grandson, who took after both his father and his grandfather and wrote about it, was named Thomas, after the president. “The federal and state governments are both contrived for the benefit of the rich and large property,” This view of the Founding Fathers has been promoted by some of today’s most prominent politicians, including some who hold prominent national offices and have a direct stake in a Republican Party that has been hijacked by the “federalist” wing of the party. So why is it that so many people have an easy-to-spot way of understanding the Civil War that has everything to do with the South and nothing to do with the South? The Confederate flag has been a symbol of racism for a long time, but when the Civil War started and the Civil War ended, many people suddenly began to see it differently. There was a change of heart, which I think is what led people to take the question of why the Civil War happened quite seriously… Although OpenAI calls this a “language model”, modeling language necessarily involves modeling the world. Even if the AI was only supposed to learn things like “texts that talk about the Civil War use the word ‘Confederate’ a lot”, that has flowered into a rudimentary understanding of how the Civil War worked. Its training corpus (8 million web pages) was large enough that in the course of learning language it learned the specific idiom and structure of all sorts of different genres and subtopics. For example:
Get ready for a spooky, jam-packed episode of Coffee with Comrades. Bree is back! What’s more, we have our comrade Nestor on the show from Black Banner Magic to talk about witchcraft, the devil’s night, and the secret history of Halloween. But first, some current events: The so-called “MAGA Bomber” is Florida man Cesar Sayoc, who sent a total of 14 mail bombs to the Clintons, Obamas, CNN, and event Robert De Niro. Meanwhile, a white supremacist opened fire at a Kroger store in Kentucky this week. White supremacist Robert Bowers walked into a synagogue in Philadelphia and opened fire, killing eleven people. Over the propaganda of “migrant caravans,” Trump is ratcheting up his attempts to “secure the border” by sending the literal fucking U.S. military to border states. History shows us the violence Central Americans are fleeing was stoked by the U.S. Jair Bolsonaro, the out-and-out, bona fide fascist, is President-elect of Brazil. One in six Americans are far-right. But white supremacy is a structural, systemic flaw of the United States. Nestor from the Black Banner Magic podcast joins us on the show to talk about Halloween’s roots in Gaelic paganism, the rebellious mischief that the holiday foments, the Great Rebellion of Detroit and the ensuing string of Devil’s Night arsons, and American capitalists’ taming of the festivities into a tepid celebration of consumerism and excess. To find out more about the Devil's Night, read this stellar essay on the subject from Mask magazine. In the world of Christian speculative fiction, the topic of fallen angels' redemption is often hotly debated -- are fallen angels able to be redeemed? Seeing these words can cause some of the faith to find the idea completely abhorrent but others may be intrigued. However, this show is all about probing various aspects of Christian fiction. Taking on this issue is author Michael Carney whose newest release, The Academy of Secrets, is book one of the Outcast Angels series. The OUTCAST ANGELS are a ragtag group of former angels exiled from Heaven at the time of the Great Rebellion. For those who love Christian fantasy, historical fantasy adventure, epic fantasy, sword & sorcery, tales of great battles and continuing warfare between angels and demons, you definitely don't want to miss this show. [School of Everything Else 2016] This week's episode is all about one of the first wildly popular toy and animated show tie-ins. Emerging in 1982 the Masters of the Universe toy line was hot on the heels of Star Wars and (thanks to the repeal of certain laws about ethics in programming) was able to advertise its products to the child during the commercial breaks as they were watching the show. And of course, seeing as most of the characters featured were already toys, every episode was a commercial in its own right. He-Man is, by today's standards a dreadfully polite pacifist who seeks only to hold Eternia's morals in check, whist Skeletor is a charmingly gentle nitwit who seeks power via boneheaded schemes. Both of them have colourful henchmen and at the end of the day nobody is getting hurt. She-Ra is a scenario much the same, only she and her buddies in the Great Rebellion are always on the back foot and Hordak is an oppressive warmonger that they are trying to depose, giving that show more of a struggle and stakes, and a rather empowering female hero for many girls (and boys) to be inspired by. Stay to the end to see how Mattel sold this strong woman in doll form. We also cover the ill-fated New Adventures and the badass 200X show. Next week we're looking at the 1987 Dolph Lundgren movie.

Our experience after death is determined by how we lived our life. Those who train the consciousness can take advantage of the after death states, to achieve a better rebirth. This lecture examines the six stages of the life cycle (bardos), kabbalah, astral projection, meditation, and more. "After death, we review the life that we just finished; we relive it in a retrospective manner, by means of the intelligence and the heart. After such a retrospection has concluded, we then must appear before the Courts of God. The Angels of the Law are called amongst the Eastern people the Lords of Karma; they judge us according to our deeds. The outcome of such a judgment could be that we may return again into a new womb in order to appear again immediately in this physical world, or we may enter into a kind of vacation within the worlds of the light and happiness, or finally—regrettably—we could be obligated to enter into the interior of the Earth, within its infradimensions, with all of its pains and displeasures." - Samael Aun Weor, Beyond Death This is a lecture from the free online course Death: Preparation for Transformation Course Description: Everyone will experience death, thus it is intelligent to prepare oneself for the experience. This course examines the truth of what happens when we die, and what happens in the afterlife or "between" (bardo). Most importantly, you will learn how to use today as preparation for death, and thereby transform life into a source of happiness for yourself and others. "We can learn very little from the phenomenon of birth, but from death we can learn everything." - Samael Aun Weor, The Great Rebellion
Since life and death are two sides of the same coin, how we live determines how we will die. Our use of mind, heart, and body sets energy in motion, and when death arrives, a great transformation occurs whose outcome is determined not only by the sum total of all of our previous acts, but by our final state of mind. Learn how to be prepared for death, and what specifically you will need to do when your death is imminent. This is a lecture from the free online course Death: Preparation for Transformation Course Description: Everyone will experience death, thus it is intelligent to prepare oneself for the experience. Spirituality is based on the possibility to comprehend our true nature, and thereby escape the painful cycles of life, death, evolution, and devolution, the mechanical wheel of nature. By awakening consciousness in the six intermediate states (betweens or bardos) one can transform life and death into vehicles for liberation. This is the essential point of view of the so-called "Tibetan Book of the Dead," actually named "Natural Liberation through Hearing in the Intermediate States," which begins with a prayer to the Three Buddha Bodies (Kayas). "I bow down to the spiritual teachers, [embodiment of] the Three Buddha-bodies: To the [Dharmakaya] Buddha-body of Reality, Infinite Light, Amitabha; To the [Sambhogakaya] Buddha-body of Perfect Resource, the Peaceful and Wrathful Lotus Deities; And to [Nirmanakaya] the Buddha-body of Emanation, Padmakara, protector of all beings." - The Great Liberation by Hearing in the Intermediate States (known as "The Book of the Dead") “A Bodhisattva is formed by the Holy Spirit [Nirmanakaya] of a Master dressed with the four lower bodies. This is the greatest mystery of the human personality. This is the mystery of the double human personality. This is one of the greatest mysteries of occultism. “The internal Master can send his Holy Spirit [Nirmanakaya] to the earth clothed with a Mental, Astral, Vital and physical body in order to perform an important mission. Christ, the divine redeemer of the World, after his earthly death, sent his human Bodhisattva. But the human beings knew him not.” - Samael Aun Weor, Igneous Rose This is a lecture from the free online course Death: Preparation for Transformation Course Description: Everyone will experience death, thus it is intelligent to prepare oneself for the experience.
Gnosis (Tantra) is a rigorous training of consciousness, to prepare it to traverse the stages of life and death. The Tibetan Buddhist Master Padmasambhava explained the stages of life and death as six "bardos" or "betweens" that, with training, can become gateways to a better life. This lecture discusses "Root Verses of the Betweens" by Padmasambhava. This is a lecture from the free online course Death: Preparation for Transformation. The beginning of real spiritual work—and preparation for death—is learning how to discriminate amongst the different psychological elements within us. Without experiential knowledge of the forces that are moving within and around us, we are powerless to determine the trajectory of our existence. Learn about the essence (unmodified consciousness), ego (modified consciousness), and personality. Only when you can recognize and manage these elements from moment to moment can you begin to prepare for a conscious death.
